BUT all of them sounded GOOD with totally clean sounds! Some speakers are just better at different types of signals, clean or clipped! The TRICK is to find a type that does both adequately!
Ok, clean I hear more difference and OMG, the blue is still my clean favorite, so beautiful. Warm, with the top end sparkle without harsh upper mids. The Gold to me is definitely the harshest, if you like the fender amp tone then this speaker would be a good match.
That's once again one of the most useful videos out there guys, what a great service to the community! Many many thanks! I ve got the Cream, Ruby and 10 inch Gold, all of them are lovely :)
I have experience with the Cream and Gold. I sold the Cream and bought the Gold because I wanted more chime in the cleans. I do miss the Cream for its middy "klang" though, especially in more driven sounds. When I can afford it, I'm gonna get another Deep Small Vintage cab from Zilla and load it with a Blue and a Cream.
@@tylerwelsh7580 lol wayy more to it than just the amp: type of guitar, pups, string gauge, effects, tube amp or solid state, type of tubes and the biggest variable: the player..
They all sound great. I've gone through most of them in 10" in my FSR '68 Princeton Reverb Reissue. FSR = Fender Special Run. Fender took some chances in the FSR series and tried out new things with that series. The '68 Princeton FSR chews up the 10" speakers. It really should have a 12" but that's also the magic of that amp. It really drives a 10" and achieves a natural cone distortion earlier than it would with a 12". It originally came with a 10" Celestion greenback, which lasted a few months. It was great, but then I opted for Alnico speakers. They sound even better. I've blown the cone on every single one of these alnico's you've tested here. There's now a rule that the amp is not turned above 7 volume. I rank them Gold, Cream, Blue and Ruby, in that order from favorite to least, to my ears. The gold alnico produces quite a jangly sound but also breaks up nicely and pairs perfectly with single coil fender guitars. Also magical with any electric 12 string guitar. Love the sound of the Blue and Ruby combo. Might have to try that in a combo. Great vid mate!
Great, a lot of people aren't int to it so its nice to hear from someone who is. I have to admit it's been a slow burner for me but I'm getting a lot more in to it.
I picked up a DRRI limited edition with a Ruby and I love it. It’s definitely not the classic DR sound, but that’s what I like about it, it seems to add more of what I like and less of what I don’t like about the response of the DRRI… it’s warmer, thicker, creamier, silkier and softens the harshness that you can get in the highs with a lot of the other stock speakers they normally come with. I would say it’s not as versatile, but for my normal play style it suits it much better.
I've always loved the idea of a BlueBell 4 x 12" cab. But that would have to be paired with a 50 watt head not a 100W.... I seem to prefer the Cream speaker here, though a little more top would be preferable. IMO
I run the gold and ruby together in a 2x12 matchless cab, the cream in a 1x12 Mathers cab, and the blue in a little combo (all open back). Love all four of them! P.S. I’m still loving my vertical SFB, Paul. The paring of the 55Hz and 75Hz G12H speakers is killer! Couldn’t be more pleased with how the cab turned out. Cheers!
It is a cool speaker, there are some people who don't like it so much but I love it, I think it's one of those speakers that if you like you love it. Thanks for watching.
My personal impression: Blue: a lot of treble but for my taste a little bit too little bass, Gold: better balanced Blue with a little more bass, Cream: Gold with even more bass, Ruby: something different, more or less a G12M with alnico magnet. Among them I like the Cream most, the Ruby is not the best speaker for clean or decent crunch tones in my opinion, because of the intense mids it has a tendency to sound a little bit muffled then, but where it really shines for me, is in a 412 cabinet in combination with the leas sounds of an Engl Savage 120 or Diezel VH-4 amp. In this combination it adds some more vividness to the tone, which you do not get from speakers with ceramic magnets. In a 212 I most probably combined the Cream and Ruby or even the Blue and Ruby, while the Gold is not really my favorite. Good speaker they all are, but they all cannot seriously compete for me with the new Celestion 100's. But this is a different story...
@@ZillaCabs Yes, power difference is too much, but sonically they would complement the circuit very well. The rubys are too boxey/midrangey and the golds too histrionic.
I've always considered the Creamback version of all Celestion types of speakers. To be the top of the line units. In this instance with alnico mag units, gold is the most vintage voiced "PA" sounding of the group. Then depending on what your after, blue would be my personal 3rd favorite, then red absolutely with one of the new red Epiphone 335's. But the clear winner has to be the crunch machine creamback. Its got the fattest sweet spot by a wide margin. Its gonna be the one for me everytime, if these were my only choices. Mix a red and cream together in a 212 cab to add some top end bite? Dangerous territory.
I couldn't imagine having anything but blues in my AC30, but I'd never use those same blues when playing by REVV D20. The AC30 is super fussy, but the REVV isn't picky, and it sounds best using Vintage 30s.
oh boy I should have noticed that haha, you know what I always just assumed with the different fixed proportions that they were chemically bonded... you learn something new everyday ;) .. as for the alnico 100, we filmed this video back in January..... we filmed on a Sunday and I found out about the 100 on the Monday haha sods law.

The Ruby is a great speaker for mixing, it actually sounds cool with loads of speakers. I actually really liked it with the heritage H speakers but if you look through our videos we have one on the Ruby vs 21 other speakers.
@@ZillaCabs I've watched it 100 times - it is a wonderful gift to guitar players. I was just wondering which sounded best to you in your experience. I heard two of them together with an otherwise super bright JMP 2204 and it was perfect.
I've been running a Blue with a G12H 75 Creamback in a Fatboy 2x12 for a couple of years. Sounds killer for 80's Thrash Metal! When explaining about the 4x12 with the Blue & Ruby my son said "It's a Blueby!" 😂
I have a really serious question, my Blue if I play clean with a fat neck humbucker, it seems to easily buzz from the cone, like it farts. Do you think it's blown? It's like the speaker has a brown note. Not even very loud, just a dozen watts.
Can you please start showing us what Impedance of speakers are you using for this demos? Please? :) Namely I have sneaky suspicion this Ruby is 16 Ohm. Or Celestion has changed Ruby totally. One I have heard when it was launched was 8 Ohm. IT was dark and lifeless and It was out of the haus faster than a Japanese bullet train :P In this video I even like it for sone part of the clip. Combination with Blue sounds better now when I hear it on my proper setup. I still think gold and Ruby would mix as well and make more powerful combo. For someone playing clean on great gear I bet with good boutique amplifier Ruby and Cream would work as well. Anyhow Cream H and Alnico Cream works good and gets all from both worlds together. Plus costs less. Still I would love to try Ruby again. But I think I am not ordering it yet. Alnico 100 is more interesting, to me, currently, to be honest.
I am still on vacation so I am listening to it over JBL Extreme II. Not ideal setup. Never the less I know the speakers pretty good. For me personally, clean, the most balanced speaker between them is still the blue. Closest to it is the cream but you can notice that it is bit lazier than blue. Still an awesome speaker and great when you need the power handling as well. Blue has nice breakup bur power handling is just not enough. Blue, clean sounds very good with most of the amplifiers, though 15 Ohm version can be a bit top heavy with P2P boutique amplifiers. Cream does that better. Last 3 amplifiers I have made with Cream. Even two 18 Watt amplifiers were cream equipped. I have to admit that I have avoided ruby from the launch. I have heard 8 Ohm version, if I recall good, and it was extremely dark. All the top end was gone. This one sounds brighter but still worst in both clean and dirty for me. Gold clean has very specific middle to high range and feels more alive. Sometimes driven it reminds me of blue. Cream can get a bit dark when driven. Ruby doesn’t get much darker with dirt. Fascinating actually. I believe gold and ruby might work good in the combination. I know that for me Creamback H or similar ceramic heavy magnet speaker goes well with the Alnico Cream. It works for both clean and dirty. I loved gold with some amplifier because it has that Celestion middle gritty tone. But it is a bit too much with some amplifiers that are aggressive themselves. When I come home I might edit all my comments once I listen to all of this with my studio monitors setup. Though I might have heard it good enough.
I REALLY love Alnicos but this kind of video seems not to be very new. There is no comparison on RUclips with NEO Vtype. You should be the first to show differences between them, Ceramic Vtype and Neo Creambacks. I would be very thankful.
