- In this episode of The Lombok Life, I take you on a ‘day in my life’ vlog so you can get an idea of what it’s like to live in Lombok. Friends and family back home kept asking me how it’s going, what was it like to live here in Lombok, what’s living in Lombok like? All the usual stuff when you move abroad! So I thought well...the best way to answer all of this was to just show you what my average day looks like. So this is me, living in Lombok. Enjoy!

There I meet my wife and because of the pandemic I was not able to return to Lombok yet. My wife lives here (Netherlands) now and we both really enjoy watching this video with a daily live at Lombok. I've never been to Lombok but watching this helps me to feel the real ambience of beautiful landscape of Lombok and stuff (the road, the beach, the warung, the locals, the cows). I didn't expect you'd go riding to the city went to the mall showing the details haha so good - love the energy in this video it's so contagious. Can't wait to visit the island once the restriction is over

Haha that certainly depends where you are and when...sometimes the beaches can also be really bad, depending on the tide and how the trash comes in. But overall, it is a truly beautiful place to live :) I just hope it can stay this way. Thanks for taking the time to watch Andy, I appreciate it 🙏

My 1st. time and already like it, stumbling to your vlog. Beautifully stitched, the footages, the music, the speech. Those're probably what glued me to my chair watching this episode "un-unterbrochen" - 40mins straight. Especially little things like first comes a bunch of cows and the herder, then comes you running unexpected (6:35). Coming out from the waves where only you, later your wife, shone by golden sunrays. Breaching waves in quite slo-mo.
Choosing music clips also deserve notification. Ohhh what a little feast watching this episode.
Am happy, both your wife and you have found a 'balance' and a piece of 'peace' there. if we can feel grateful of little 'things' in Life such as of the morning air, of the warmth of early morning sunrays, of the humble food we have for today, even of a sip of drinking water - then i believe, we'll be a better human for humanity itself and the world as well.

Glad I did I had Trip booked for lombok back in 2020 obviously it never eventuated due to captain covid spoiling the adventures of us all . but finally its going to come to fruition 🙏🎉🎉. Hi Josh, I'm new here! LOVING your Lombok series! I spent my childhood in Sumbawa--the island east of Lombok--so watching your videos flew me back to all of those years. Anyway, you're pretty much a local now by eating at warungs lol. The next level would be eating with your hands and uses 'wkwk' instead of 'lol's. Ask your wife, she'll understand :D.
Anyway, Hoping you would make a series about the absolutely delicious Lombok food! There's this legendary seafood spot in Mataram called Seafood 99. And you must've heard about ayam taliwang and plecing kangkung. Looking forward to your next videos!

I like these longer videos, less ads and more Josh/Leyla. Also I'm doing the Indonesian duolingo as well and it is a fun language to learn there. Whoever wrote some of those modules threw some sass in there. Still trying to figure out when and when not to use yang in sentences. Maybe Leyla could do a short language segment in the next episode...:) Go England!

I have just now finished full video. Appreciate you shared us your "regular" life. It's difficult to absorb that as we do live completely different life style, lot of rush and stress , which is really not needed... Life is about completely different priorities, enjoying every single day and live in harmony with nature and family.
Can you in next session show us more about religion culture over there, is there any manufacturing?
You you plan to stay there for longer period?
Is it difficult to feed / earn for you, or is it about reserves you have from past?
Maybe, would be nice to see what kind of animals lives there, what to avoid to be safe.
Soe you plan to extend your house and rent it for visor as me?

I have a pretty good idea of the stuff I'm going to be filming for the upcoming episodes in this series, but I'm hopeful of doing a series 2 at some point where I can explore some of the things you mention. Religion and culture is a particularly interesting one!
I think I will be here for a few years, so sure. Especially with the way the pandemic is playing out at the moment and all of the travel restrictions. For now, I am living off of savings and Leyla is an Indonesian citizen working here on her freelance business. We make it work through all of that and obviously, I am hopeful of figuring out all of this RUclips thing and seeing where it takes me!

Instead of running back on the road you can cut through the market and run all the way back along the sea front to Alberto’s opposite where you live! It’s beautiful along there.
Haha have you been reading my mind? This is the exact route I take on the way back :) I love it! It's a lot nicer running along there and helps add up to the 10K. It's a little tougher to run on sand but the views out to sea and Mount Agung are well worth it :)

Booked into the Makarma resort for the 15th April. My lady is from Depok and we will meet up in Bali for a week, then ferry to Lombok.
Will hire a motor bike for the 24 days we are there.

Wait, is the “disregard-red-light-when-turning-left” not a thing elsewhere in the world? 😜 Appreciate all the drone shots, I am Mataram born and bred but still awed at how different it feels looking at the “city” from above. I liked how you switched perspectives as you went along the road too - not exactly sure how you achieved that haha (was there another person filming?) - but anyway it’s a really nice touch!
Hahahaha. Perhaps a few other countries in South East Asia that are pretty chill about driving 😂 I kind of like it, in a weird way. But then I pick up lots of bad habits! And that's nice to hear you enjoyed seeing Mataram from a different angle :) I was struck by how beautiful it looks from above...a really cool city in my opinion. I basically filmed all the driving stuff on the bike and then I filmed drone stuff afterwards 😉

Food was delicious 😋 You could assume I was there during the worst time as it was raining cats and dogs but it was an amazing experience as I could see how kind the locals are. People helping each other to cross the flooded street and always smiling 🙂...Staying on this side of Lombok was the best choice. We will definitely come again and plan for a longer stay. Until then we will watch Lombok through your lenses 😀👍

Are you able to share your running route(s)? How is running in Lombok - is it generally safe? Are the roads typically lit or unlit before the sun is up?

Hi Lena! No worries :) thanks for taking the time to watch, I appreciate it. Running in Lombok is very safe. The roads can be a little busy, so getting off on to trails and beaches may be preferable. I tend to go early in the morning (around 6am) so that A) the roads are still quiet and B) the heat from the sun hasn't kicked in yet. It's a lot cooler...running in the middle of the day is crazy here. I just run north along the road from Senggigi for about 5km, then 5km back. There are a lot of hills and trails out here too.
Some main roads have streetlights, but it's not a guarantee and even when lit, they're still quiet dark. So if you're running in the dark you need to think about high-vis and cycle lights etc. Hope this helps 😁✌

What an interesting life you have but wondering if it’ll be nice during rainy season. It seems like a holiday but can’t imagine if I could live there. For someone who lives in California and works in Disneyland where I meet ten of thousands of people almost everyday, that island is too quiet. Everyone has his own preference though. ✌️

The rainy season here was actually quite nice, I enjoyed it! Felt a bit like home in the UK. Everything is really green and growing and the torrential downpours are pretty epic

I’ve only been to Sumatra and loved the Achenese food! I love the warungs like you showed where you can pick a bunch of dishes on rice. So yummy! Definitely coming to Lombok but 30 days visa doesn’t seem enough! Do you know if ppl can extend visas in Mataram rather than flying out to Singapore?

Love this vlog series. I spent some time in Lombok recently and fell in love with it. I am contemplating spending 1-2 months there to see if I should relocate from the UK (a distant dream at the moment). Do you live in Senggigi? Where else have you lived in Lombok? How's the social life/ community?

Warung means Cafe so you will find them everywhere. It’s a lot less expensive than bigger restaurants or western restaurants, for sure.

It will never surpass Bali and for that I'm thankful. In the "peak season" (maybe running from May to September), there'll be plenty of bookings for accommodation.

So you can either hire a car for the day (around 250 - 400k a day), or hire a driver to take you there. Hope that helps 👍🏼 great idea to visit in July - you will love it here 😁

I've just discovered this wonderful channel. Like you I yearn to be somewhere else other than the UK. I've been drawn to this island simply due to watching social media coverage, yet I've never even visited Indonesia - that will be rectified soon. I'm at a very different stage of life to you (in my 50's) yet my requirements are fundamentally similar. I'm at a crossroads, I have little family and never had children, I'm fortunate though that money simply won't be a problem for me. My question to you, knowing Lombok as you do, is where do I stay to discover the real island, get a feel for it. By real I mean if I chose to live/retire there, not as a "5 star" tourist? I like a quiet life, seclusion. I'm don't yearn for parties or night life. So just some pointers to get me started on my own journey please. Loving your candid real world, you're living a simple existence that I crave, the "peace" that you mention during this film.

In terms of what you're describing, there are plenty of places to stay and live. Senggigi is on the west coast just north of the main city Mataram. There are smaller villages around like Mangsit where you'll find it's really quiet. The expat community in Senggigi is generally skewed older, so I think you will find plenty of people in their 50's if you so wish :) Senggigi used to be a tourist hotspot but that's really shifted. It's very quiet now. Between Senggigi and Bangsal there are plenty of beautiful little spots and villages on the coast which offer what you want, so it just depends on how quiet and secluded you'd like life to be! Alternatively, you've got the same setup in the surrounding areas of Kuta and all along the south coast. Selong Belanak would be well worth looking at. I hope that helps you out

Having looked on line and at various channels the South looks very appealing, but I'm not sure I like the idea of buying on one of the many "Communities" that appear to be popping up with invetment opportunities. So senggigi sounds liek an interesting alternative. Oh - I'm also a young 50......Not your regular oldie!

Started binge watching your videos just recently! Why you don't try to participate in Rinjani 100? Its trail running event across Rinjani which held once every year (usually mid year, there's still a quite lot time to prepare!) You can try the 27k one (the shortest). Since you've been running a lot in couple of years.

Just an fyi at 19:45 I'm not sure if it's like that in London (or wherever you're from) but where I live in Canada you can turn right on red since we drive on the right. In Indonesia since you drive on the left, it's totally safe to turn left on red, and people tend to honk if you don't lol
Haha yeah different country, different rules 😂 in the UK, if we were allowed to turn left on a red it would have to explicitly highlight that with a sign to let drivers know. It's interesting how everywhere has different signs and styles of driving!

Thanks very much for this video! I'm not a family or personal friend, just as random Internet person :P but I really enjoyed this, possibly more than the other videos.
I have found it is very difficult to find English content and information about day-to-day life in Lombok. I have so many questions about the norms there: language, culture, religion, business, education, family structures, history, government, etc. I think there are three reasons for my fascinations (and these reasons might represent broader niches in your audience to capitalise on):
(1) I have never been to Lombok but have someone close to me who lives there now and I want to visit them when my situation allows. So, I'm really keen to absorb all I can to understand the local context and environment in order to relate to them and to prepare for my visit.
(2) My visit to Lombok may ultimately be a semi-working one, and so I'm very keen to know some of the potentially dry, day-to-day realities I might face as an expat. Once you have some more experience living there, maybe you could do some interviews with expats to share tips/experiences/reasons which brought them to Lombok/etc.?
(3) Although Lombok looks very beautiful, I think I have been a bit spoilt as an Australian now living in Okinawa, Japan. Nice beaches and climate is pretty normal to me, so perhaps I take those for granted in a place like Lombok. This, in combination with my general interest in people, languages, history, and culture, makes me less interested in tourist hotspots or even some cultural festivals, and more interested in the daily experience of people. On this note, you could try some videos where you shadow a local person, i.e. day in the life of a university student/imam/shopkeeper/etc.
On an unrelated note, I think it would be cool if you tried to make some some shorts. Probably you have no shortage of beautiful shots around Lombok. Might be a nice way to advertise/show off your favourite views/places/people/experiences/etc.

I will do my best to address some of your questions and certain topics in future episodes for sure. A few of them I already have lined up and planned so yeah, hopefully you will learn more and more as you watch this series. I did have the thought process as I was editing it that this is _my_ day to day here in Lombok - an experience that is completely different to a local shopkeeper or student living here. So yeah, it would definitely be interesting to capture what that is like!
I think you're right about the RUclips Shorts - that's something I intend to dive into soon. I'm figuring out ways in which I can further reach an audience because I know full well that the majority of people aren't going to want to sit and watch a 40 minute video straight away! Short-form content would be good to have out there

You should feel blessed to run, some ppl have real disabilities where they only dream of doing what you are doing. I think it’s good to feel Grateful every day that you are able to travel and live where you do and be able and to wake up early and enjoy a morning jog.
