Ahhh a kindred spirit! Really relate to this as someone who fell in love with Indonesia after my first trip to Sumatra 12 years ago. From the first moment I stepped foot in the country, I could no longer keep up the "act" of my "real life" in New Zealand. Ended up coming here a few years before COVID. Lived in Sumatra, a few months in Bali, then a year in Gili T - before the pandemic messed it all up! As soon as borders opened up, I came straight back to North Sumatra and have been living here (at Lake Toba) ever since. 18 months and counting and I still pinch myself every single day. It's an absolute privilege. Looking forward to seeing your Gili journey - we did enjoy living there for our year, but it's not where we wanted to be long-term: Sumatra has our hearts. :)

Excellent video i am older than you, but can very much relate. Still living here in oz ourselves. You seem to be a real go getter and achiever, impressive. I am feeling the same way as you were and it hit home when you said " resenting the ones closest to you", we have a villa in bali but its not suitable for us to live in, it really is a small investment property. However we have found a wonderful block of land in the hidden hills and the cooler temperatures are attractive to us. The local family were so welcoming to us it felt like home so we made an offer as they were keen to sell several different blocks. However they showed us the one pce of land - over half an acre. my husband and i both felt it. My husband keeps talking about the move in years and years time like i think hes talking 5 to 7 years, i know im thinking 1 or 2 and have talked about it but financially we need a plan. To sell our home here in australia is a big leap or faith and a bit scary and 49 and 50 year olds. I need to work it out as i know i am not leading the life i want or need.
Ha lucky for you, yes chairman McGowan was not willing to let go hey! he is gone now but the smell still lingers. I have 2000sqm in west Java and wont be long before I make the same move. Good luck.

Coming to Lombok in December with my family from Jakarta and hoping to buy land/house in Kuta or Senggigi. Kuta is changing fast but what are your thoughts on Sengiggi? Any videos? Cheers
Ok we will try to make a video about Senggigi soon! My partner is originally from Lombok and he still loves Senggigi. For me, it currently doesn’t have charm as it’s positioned on a main road and has so many empty shops and empty houses. However, because the infrastructure is already there from when it was a booming town full of expat mine workers, I do believe that if there was a group of investors all at the same time opening a heap of shops, bars and cafes in the existing buildings, then it has huge potential to revive back to being an exciting town again! There are several businesses there that I absolutely love visiting including the Western-style grocery and bakery stores and some delicious restaurants, and of course the beautiful sunsets and views, so it’s definitely worth visiting! The housing there is also a lot cheaper than Kuta which is now the most expensive area of Lombok.
Ooh good luck! Yes it can be a bit scary but I believe there is no greater regret than not doing something that you feel in your soul you are supposed to do
