One of the main reasons I wanted to travel to the island of Lombok in Indonesia is to eat the original ayam taliwang, a style of spicy grilled chicken that truly is the best grilled chicken I’ve ever tasted anywhere in the world.
In this Mataram, Lombok food tour, we eat at some of the best and most legendary street food stalls in Mataram, Lombok!
RM. Bebalung Kelebet - For breakfast I couldn’t wait to try a dish called bebalung, a beef ribs dish. You have to arrive at this place in the morning or they will sell out, and the beef ribs are extraordinary with sambal and rice.
Price - 68,000 IDR ($5.02) for 2
Islamic Center Mosque - After the beef ribs breakfast feast, we walked over to have a quick tour of the biggest mosque in Mataram.
Rumah Makan Sukaraja - For first lunch, we headed to a restaurant known for their Lombok style nasi campur, where you can choose a mixture of different dishes all over your rice. It was excellent.

Warung Sate Rembiga Utama - For lunch number two, and one of the must eat Indonesian foods to try when you’re in Lombok is sate rembiga. The sate is a little sweet, but spicy at the same time, and I would venture to say they are some of the most addictive sate I’ve ever had anywhere.
Total price - 89,000 IDR ($6.57)
Taliwang Khas Pak Udin - Finally on to ayam taliwang, and I ordered super pedas, extra spicy. They first deep fry the chicken, then coat it in multiple layers of chili sauce, and then grill it over a ridiculous hot fire, while pouring chili all over it. The result is a grilled chicken that will change your life forever, it’s insane.
Price - 40,000 IDR ($2.95) per chicken
Seafood Ikan Bakar 88 - Finally to end this Indonesian food tour of Mataram, I met up with a group at a street food seafood restaurant. It was great to eat and hang out!

Its not small chicken,its Burras Domesticus chicken (or indonesian people called it Ayam Kampung). Its growing with organic food,so the flavor is totally diferent with broiler chicken.

Safest way to come is to stay at least at decent hotel or world-known budget hotels and ask the staffs around. We have Gojek or Grab apps much like Uber in US that u can use and theres almost 0 cases of crime here from using those 2. Drivers are mostly polite and if u are foreigner and the driver can understand u, maybe he/she could take u around the city for more cash of cos.
However, if are going to this place which is LOMBOK (or maybe u want to visit BALI after, these 2 are very close islands). Those 2 places are tourist friendly, just stay at decent hotels and ull have amazing time.

Tingkat kepedasan cabai Lombok agak berbeda dgn yang di Jawa, cabai rawit Jawa ada sedikit rasa manis, sy gak pernah merasa puas bikin sambel pakai cabai Jawa, pakai 20 biji cabai rawit yg di Jawa biasa aja rasanya, kalau cabai di Lombok itu pedasnya meluas di mulut bahkan telinga seperti terbakar, sy paling suka beberok Lindung (Sambal Belut Lombok di Lombok).
Beli soto Lombok di Jawa rasanya beda dgn yg di Lombok, bahan2 dasarnya gk dari Lombok, ternyata sangat mempengaruhi cita rasa.
Kangkungnya juga beda, saya pernah bikin kayak di video itu pake kangkung Jawa, tapi hancur kangkungnya, gak cocok & gk enak, rasanya juga beda, cendrung tawar, walaupun sdh ditaruhin garam, tetep gk cocok.
Air juga agak berbeda, kalau cuci badan, sabunnya langsung kyk luntur dgn air yg di Jawa, sedangkan air yang di Lombok harus di gosok berkali2 baru bisa hilang sabunnya.
Rata-rata tanahnya berair di Lombok itu, kalau gempa gampang terbelah & tembok rumah gampang retak, kl di Jawa agak agak padat gitu tanahnya.
Entah bagiamana bisa dijelaskan secara ilmiah soal rasa itu...

I believe Mark Wiens is an humble guy and he wouldn't lay to every one about the taste of the food and I also believe he knews how to respect with local culture for that reason Indonesian like him very much. For you who has never come to Indonesia why don't you just fly over to visit us and try our local cuisine by the time you step in Indonesia and you will know the real taste of it before giving good or bad jugment. We have been waiting for you and see you soon.
I just had to comment here. Over the years I have traveled a lot through Asia and been to places like vietnam and Thailand which are both known around the world for their cuisine. Like you can find Vietnam and Thai food in every corner of the world. In 2019 I planned a trip to Thailand and later on the plan was to go to Indonesia. I had no idea about the food or what to expect because for some reason Indonesian food isn't that well known.
Anyway I arrived in Jakarta during Idul Fitri, there were almost no food vendors and so I only ate from restaurants for the first few days. Then I moved to Bandung and first stall i saw I stopped to eat. It was a fried noodle. Unfortunately, I got sick after a few days, not sure if it was the noodles or why I got sick. But anyway, I spent 2 months in Indonesia and rarely ate local cuisine, until I heard about beef rendang.
From the first moment I set food into a masakan padang shop I was amazed at how good those dishes are. Anyway, right now I'm in Indonesia and although were I am I can easily find pizza, burgers, pasta and other western food most of the time I eat local food. Everything is good and freshly made, chicken is so tender it falls off the bone, beef can easily be cut with a spoon, fried rice and noodles are an explosion of flavors and anything cooked in some type of sauce is just melt in the mouth delicous.
I'm actually watching this video because I am going to lombok tomorrow and there is no better person than Mark Wiens to get to know what are the best foods to eat in a place.

the chicken is tiny because it was Ayam Kampung, peopla growth them in the nature which they could playing and have fun, not just stayed in a farm, no fat contain and no add chemical to make their body bigger, all its body contains meat n muscle only, very healthy👍

I really envy Mark, he can eat like a horse and never gain an once of fat. He must be one of those persons that has a high metabolism. The food in this video looks yummy as usual. I love that spicy meat grilled over real charcoal. Who can refuse this ? No one, it's too inviting Thumbs Up !

Ahh yeahh! A Lombok local also took me to the same place he had the grilled chicken. We were there early in the evening. Totally packed with locals, just like every night as I've been told. Delish!

This video reminds me of my trip to Lombok last August with my sister. At first, we did not know the recommended places to eat. With this video, we are really looking forward to eating these dishes shown in this video whenever we visit Lombok again in the future.
The water spinach dish reminds me the one I had in Gili islands. However, I took a very spicy one which made me teary. There are a few Balinese Hindu temples there and I had visited one at Senggigi. Anyway, i do recommend you to eat some traditional Indonesian dishes at the foothills of mount Rinjani and that is senaru village; which offers very scenic views of rice terraces and waterfall. Sometimes, we can see bali from lombok as well!
