DADGAD is my favorite tuning and it always will be. In my opinion one of the most beautiful guitar tunings you could ever use and I'm beyond grateful that I discovered that tune this year
I always find funny when people say "I tried but i suck" in the comments of guitar videos, keep sucking 2 hours per day for 3 years and you won't suck that much anymore :)
Thankyou Will for teaching me this little tune in dadgad. It took me a good 2 or mabey 3 days to get it down , but every time i play it my friends not only ask me to teach them about dadgad , but also how to play this tune. I have you to thank for introducing me to dadgad , but also this beautiful tune. Thank's Will your friend and student Steve
Beautiful piece of music and very simply disected and explained, always lovely to watch tutorials even when you can already play lol, I've not played in DADGAD for over 18 months and fancied a change and was looking for something to try my hand at, picked it up almost immediately, I just need to work on my muscle memory to stop the odd occasional bum note, thank you for the upload.
I stumbled upon this and like to play it as 2 guitars , you keep the intro melody going whilst he rocks on to the next verse with the octaves and then follow with the next verse and let it repeat with the last verse (like its intertwined) , sounds bad ass !! , nice piece good sir , excuse my lack of theoretical explanation
Beautiful. I forget about this tuning, then come back much later and rediscover it. Even strumming across the open strings sounds amazing. I like your work here and I see a lot folks asking for tablature etc, but I'd rather just let the tuning take me wherever it takes me. Thanks and nice playing. Nice guitar too!
Also correction to the tab! Second melody, last section before the final repeated section. In the beginning of the 3rd bar, it's open note on bass, not 3rd fret, as it's impossible to play 3rd fret together with the melody anyway. You can check on the video as well, he plays the open string. Great stuff to play! I'm digging it
+Łukasz Nowak it's because it lends itself to open string harmony and drone notes. playing over a drone is pretty common in celtic and medieval music. if you start adding more chords to the piece it will sound less like that though. it also allows more octave playing which adds to this bright ringing sound that sounds more like celtic and medieval instruments. using modes will lend to that sound as well.
+Tom Milley Music ... and in medieval times we didn't have 'equally tempered' tuning - although a guitar has fixed tuning because the frets can't be moved, the more nearly pure fourth and fifth interval pairs of strings (and fewer extra-wide tempered thirds)you can tune, the less equally tempered and more 'Pythagorean' or pure the chords and melodies will appear. Yes, I'm a concert pianoforte tuner as well as guitar player.
when i was in middle school i saw this video and thought i just have to learn what hes playing. So i did, day after day frame by frame i listened and i can proudly say i still play it till today.
The harmonics of open G is very eclectic. With standard tuning of E to E and using normal C, D, D7, A7 Bm7, Fm7, in normal positions and up and down their fret mark placements , along with harmonics really makes some great tones with some blues down notes as like sharps to flats can create some awesome finger placements for finger picking melodies along with the cords and bar slides while placing some harmonics at the highlight and or sustain rings of each measure of melody.
A wonderful tone using DADGAD tuning. I'll have to try this out, one of my guitars is tuned to an open Amaj7 which is quite interesting. But this sounds much better. Great demo thanks.
Jimmy Page used it in songs like Kashmir, Moonlight, White Summer/Black Mountain Side with a guitar through a dirty amp. Not sure where you can look for the 12 strings tho.
Oni das Alagoas and Ian Tacke: You’re in luck because I’ve dedicated the past 25+ years of my life to playing 12-string in DADGAD. I’m just starting to release song on here and Soundcloud. Look for Technophant’s channel and see my latest session. ruclips.net/video/xLE_zN50wXM/видео.html And yes, Jimmy Page was a big influence however his DADGAD songs are very difficult to play especially on 12-string.
This is a very cool sounding song. Love the sounds you get from the open strings. My first time trying out this tuning. Wanting to learn more. Excellent guitar playing and the guitar sounds awesome. However, I would echo some previous comments. We as guitar players are so in love with the sound of our guitar, that we don't think about how it will be viewed in an instructional video. I have seen this many times on youtube, but I must say, if you are going to do an instructional video on youtube, you must use a guitar with fret markers. Sorry, don't care how great the guitar sounds. If you have and old beater laying around that has fret markers (with poorer quality sound), then that's what you should use for the video. If it's intended to be instructional, then the awesome sound of the guitar doesn't matter so much.
Should that low F (3rd fret on 6th string) in bar 25 of the tab be the open D instead? Hard to keep the F ringing while doing the hammer ones and from watching the vid it looks like he's playing the open string there. Lovely song, had a blast learning it, thanks so much!
+jamin grace As a "standard" player who had to learn dadgad on the fly for an Irish gig, an immediate switch is pretty rough.. It'll take time to be comfortable with it, but just be sure to play in that tuning often until the shapes start to solidify.
have any songs tabbed out in DADGAD that we might "steal" from you?...when it comes to music on acoustic, I'm shameless...if not, know where I can tap into a catalogue of tabbed tunes? (will also need a recording to hear the song)
Its Dsus4 tuning. It does have a drone thing going on which I like especially for Irish music but i find it can sometimes be a little boring (not in a bad way). I prefer Dropped D (DADGAE)
isn't dsus4 DADADD? Well that's what the tabber put in his tab sheet when I was learning my sacrifice. If it isn't a burden to you, please enlighten me
Hello, I tryed to tunning my guitar (Classic guitar/nylon strings) with DADGAD tunning, but almost all my strings are blast, what set of strings (nylon) can I use?
What actually is this piece called? I cant find it anywhere. Would love to hear an original studio recording if one exists. Is this one of those old songs with no attributed songwriter?
Lance L. Young Thanks Lance. Here is a link to the TAB: mos.musicradar.com//images/acoustic-expo/Acoustic%20Expo%202014/Acoustic%20Expo%20video%20lesson%20tab/TGR.AcousticExpo.Midwinter.fig01.pdf
Thanks for the link. I just learned it from the video and actually memorized it. Doing it that way helps me retain and recall it more easily , but it is still nice to have the tab.
What a great talent you are! It looks like "Lowden" as the brand of your guitar if I'm reading it correctly. I play an old nylon string guitar. Maybe you have very strong fingers or your steel string guitar is very easy to play. Have you played nylon string guitars before? Can steel string guitars be as easy to play as nylon string? I don't know anyone who would loan their steel string guitar to me... Maybe there are music stores rent a guitars, but maybe that's not true as it would devalue their bran new guitars, thus my asking you about a comparison. Thanks for your inspiring tutorial. I didn't know Folk music musicians like DADGAD. Why is that?
Thanks kindly. It is indeed a Lowden, and yes I actually started on nylon string guitars. Steel string can indeed be as easy as nylon strings =) Thanks for listening!
Hi there. The link to the tab from that site no longer works. But I did find it at www.mediafire.com/file/p6hsyw3x3e3i4e4/TGR.AcousticExpo.Midwinter.fig01.pdf

majora231 Brilliant! Practice brings improvement.
majora231 it's really not that hard to do I only just started using this tuning and if you look closely at what he is doing its pretty easy to learn
Indeed
And then try to do what Davy Graham did with it in those early days when he started making this tuning well known!
You just gotta play your ass off,and drop ur family and women. Play all freakin day
Why is this video no longer playing sound? It’s such a cool lesson!
Just a wonderful, wonderful tune! Thank you for sharing and for providing links to the tab in the comments section. All the best!
Thanks for the tutorial, first actual dadgad song I've fully learned.

I think I just travelled to a medieval town after playing this piece for like 30 times.
Beautiful playing, and interesting tune. has some middle age celtic magic vibe in it!
Excellent breaking down of the tune. Thanks.
Great video!👍 Beautiful song. I love the sound of that guitar.
Thank you for this great lesson. And thank you, Nick Williamson, for the link to the tab. It helped me very much even at start point :-)

is it me, or does this tuning sounds a little "medival" if you know what I mean
+Łukasz Nowak I thought the same thing!
I think that's the idea. But who knows what they listened to a thousand years ago. Nobody left any tapes.
Tom Milley Music
Wow, I love hearing music described this way, even though i can't comprehend most of it, on some level it makes sense. Thanks.

What a great piece, really well explained too. We want more.
Lovely tune. A great intro DADGAD! Thanks. I can hear Bert Jansch in it.

always liked the sound of dadgad, this should be easy enough to practise. thx for tabs too
Very nice piece and tutorial. Took me about the time of this video to learn it fully :D
Great lesson love the opening guitar performance.
Merci pour ce morceau et cette TAB ...C'est simple, clair et ça permet de s'initier au DADGAD
Perfect !!!
A wonderful tone using DADGAD tuning. I'll have to try this out, one of my guitars is tuned to an open Amaj7 which is quite interesting. But this sounds much better. Great demo thanks.
Simply awesome. Thank you.
Lovely piece. There should be more like it.
I wonder what this tune would sound like on a 12 string, or if it was played through an amp with distortion and wah wah.....
So beautiful and ambient.
Jimmy Page used it in songs like Kashmir, Moonlight, White Summer/Black Mountain Side with a guitar through a dirty amp. Not sure where you can look for the 12 strings tho.

Bro, DADGAD tuning reminds me of when I was in middle school, He used this tuning for my violin lesson
Good memories 🙂
You play that guitar beautifully!!!!!!!
Beautiful board
Awesome playing! Very Inspiring! Cant find the tabs...
The guitar is Lowden new Old Lady, Bensusan. Cuban mahogany back and sides, red cedar top. Fabulous instrument. A dream for Celtic, Irish music.

Gaelic lol.
What fantastic playing :O
I've been playing for 13 yrs I got into altered tunics bout 5 yrs ago still experiment with many. But dadgad is my favourite for so many reasons
Great lesson, thanks.
Pretty song...Interesting tuning. Gotta' give 'er a go. Thanks.....
I liked , easy to learn .
oh my God it's so cool! Gotta buy a second guitar only for medieval tuning.
ps: I also meant to say that is a very beautiful tune. Both the gorgeous sounds of the guitar and the song are very well suited.
The link is not below.
Lovely song.
I do all my songwriting in a similar tuning DADF#AD. Definitely gotta tune that 4th to this sometime though
the last part I could not understand, was confused, could not see the movement of his right hand on the ropes
Whenever bored I DADGAD. I've had an ongoing Kashmir practice going on for years- a song that I can always expand and improve on.
I really like this sound and this doesn`t seem to complicated either ...
Link can be found below. Keep scrolling down to highlighted link. Cool tune. Thanks for the post.

that chord in the beginning sounds amazing
The piece he plays after the intro is Ritual Dance by Kaki King
Matthew Wilson I believe it was written by Michael Hedges, although KK does a fine recording of it.
I've seen a lot of progressive metal bands use this tuning they incorporate it very well into their music
I've looked everywhere on the internet for this song in this tuning but this video is the only one. I don't even know the name of it.
You can find it on the music radar website.

wow beautiful song dude! First time Ive stumbled across dadgad. I love the sound. Would it be confusing switching between dadgad and normal tuning?
+jamin grace As a "standard" player who had to learn dadgad on the fly for an Irish gig, an immediate switch is pretty rough.. It'll take time to be comfortable with it, but just be sure to play in that tuning often until the shapes start to solidify.
beaitiful play and sounding. i decide to dagdad according. what strings format do you utilize to get this medieval sound?
Gorgeous melody ! How can I find the tab ?

Its Dsus4 tuning. It does have a drone thing going on which I like especially for Irish music but i find it can sometimes be a little boring (not in a bad way). I prefer Dropped D (DADGAE)

ORANGEPARSON dropped D is boring
DADGAD is Open Dsus4. DADGAE is technically Open Dsus4add9.
Never seen DADADD before, but I guess it would just be Open D5?
Nice pattern for Fingerstyle,
Здорово звучит. Что это за композиция? Хочу разучить.
Unfortunately I can't find a link to the tab!
What is the song played in the beggining? pls tell it to me, someone please!!
Great stuff!
Great instrument
Awesome tune :o
Check Tommy Emmanuel - Those Who Wait
he used DADGAD tuning in it.
Where can I find the tab?
under Nick Williamsons' reply above
Got it after playing repeatedly for 2 days I'm so happy, does anyone know the actual name of the song???
Here y'go Cameron: bit.ly/2DPHNPa. It's a tune I wrote for this tutorial called Midwinter.
Will McNicol awsome! thanks so much, I play this song every time I play my guitar I'm obsessed haha
Thank you for sharing, Will! It’s such a gorgeous piece of music.
Took me about 3 hrs to get the different parts down, Thanks for sharing Will it's really fun to play!

I am afraid to break my low e string when tuning dadgad
both E strings are detuned to D so it shouldn't be a problem
It's tuning down not up
Why would you break your low e string when you're tuning DOWN a whole step?
Is there TAB for this, I'd appreciate a reference
