  • Here are my favorites reads out of the 173 books I read in 2023. There aren’t a ton of books…so either I’m extremely picky or really bad at rating books 😅 anyways hope you enjoy and find some books to add to your TBR!

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. It's pure dark academia, and nobody ever talks about it - probably because it's quite a bit older than The Secret History. But you will love it.

Have you read any Janet Fitch? Her first novel, White Oleander, takes place in LA. It’s as if LA, especially the weather, is a character. It was made into a movie. It’s about a young girl who is put into the foster care system because her mother, an artist, ends up in prison. I enjoyed it so much much I read it twice.
Her second book, Paint It Black, also takes place in LA. The protagonist is a young woman who loses the love of her life. Then she is forced to deal with the young man’s mother who blames the protagonist for his death.
Her third book, The Revolution of Marina M., is in my to-read stack.

Definitely putting some of these books on my list :) Thank you! I actually only have two five-star books this year which is very few because I'm at 76 books so far... Maybe I need a better screening process for reading next year :) But! They were Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes and The Lockwood and Co series by Jonathan Stroud.

I’m so curious about Lockwood, saw it on Netflix and enjoyed it, are the books even better? (If you’ve seen it)?

@@NatashaCreatesThings I've seen the show too. That's how I discovered the books. A lot of the best lines in the show were taken right out of the books. The books also have scarier ghosts and a well thought out ghost system in general (the books come with a classification glossary). Overall I thought the books were very enjoyable, fast paced, fun and an interesting intersection of Dark Academia (secret societies, dark secrets and pursuit of occult knowledge) and science fiction dystopia (the world hasn't ended, but the society and government has undergone drastic changes to keep going). I would highly recommend them.

Vicious is my go to book when people ask for book recommendations. It's just so good and I can't wait to reread it one day 😍 (I'm happy my mum died and Carrie Soto is back were also 5 star reads for me ☺). Another 5 star read was House of hollow. I don't known if you've read it but it's so eerie and creepy that I read it in one sitting. I haven't stopped thinking about it ever since and I know the author has a new book coming out in the beginning of 2024!

I thought you would have more fantasy fiction on the list. :) I've written a fantasy series called Lands of Wanderlust by Paul Yoder if you want to get adventurous.
Love your channel btw. The ren faire spotlights are super helpful!

Wanted to start Cinder and now I really need to read it more! I see the Remembrance of Earth Past on your bookshelf. I loved those books, finished them over the summer myself. What did you think of them?
Vicious honestly sounds so interesting now as well, I am definitely going to have to pick it up!
If you haven't read All Systems Red (the Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells yet, I highly recommend them! Feels very much like reading a book version of some of the Love, Death and Robots Netflix shorts. It was fun, quick and had a nice comedic edge, while following this robot sentry, who dubs itself "Murderbot" and watching its deep discomfort in engaging with humans.
If you haven't read the Expanse books yet as well, they are soooo good.
If you are into romantic fantasy, Stolen Songbird was a fun read, with trolls under a mountain and magic! It is by Danielle L Jensen. The Serpent and the Wings of Night is my most recent finished, which was a dark vampire story with some Hunger Games-esque games. Honestly, I really enjoyed it and kinda between a 4.5-5 for me.
Lastly, Children of Time is phenomenal science fiction if you are looking for something truly different. The ideas of how we might harness the evolutionary process to choose for specific traits in an animal species and where that could take us is fascinating.
Wishing you the best new year of reads!!

I really want to read more in 2024 (im finishing Jane Eyre for the third(?) time lol) and these were great recommendations. Have you read the Lux series at all? Its not the newest collection of books, but its one of my favs! Very…. Interesting premise lol
