Possibly Authentic Grog:
2 oz or 60 ml Jamaican Appleton Estate Reserve
8 oz or 240 ml of water
or
2 oz or 60 ml Smith and Cross
8 oz or 240 ml of water
Add lime half and 2 spoonfulls of sugar if you are curious about how that tastes
The Wellerman:
1 oz or 30 ml Lemon Juice
.5 oz or 15 ml Simple Syrup
2 oz or 60 ml Rum (El Dorado 8)
Heaping spoonful of Matcha Powder
1 egg white
Dry Shake
Add ice and shake again
Strain into coup or sour glass
Garnish with dots of Angostura Aromatic Bitters (skull and cross bones if you dare)

If you don't mind me putting in my two cents, not bashing you as it's mostly due to my own love of folk singing in general, @TheLongestJohns may have had a hand in bringing these sea shanties back to the foreground. I think you fancy folks should reach out to each other and do what fancy folks do! (I'm not fancy so I wouldn't know, haha)
I got on a annual canoe trip and I make Grog for everyone. I use brown sugar and I’m a little more generous with the spiced rum. I got the recipe from the RUclips channel”Outside Xbox”.

I had a large group of Sea Shanties come into my bar a few months ago late at night on like a random Tuesday. There were at least 15 of them and they took up half the bar plus a high top near by and slugged down 5 pints each and sang shanties the entire time they were there. They tipped my 30% and sang on their way our of the bar. Honestly one of the highlights of my life

Fun fact about Admiral Edward Vernon: Grog is not the only thing he is famous for. He once commanded an expedition involving several companies of the Virginia militia in the 1740s. Among those soldiers under his command was a Captain Lawrence Washington, who grew to admire the Admiral. When he returned home and inherited the Little Hunting Creek Plantation, he renamed it Mt. Vernon after his former commander. His half-brother George kept the name when he inherited the plantation and so it remains today.

He also led an attack against the port of Cartagena de Indias, with such overwhelming force that medals were struck to commemorate the event in advance, showing the Spanish Admiral Blas de Lezo kneeling before Admiral Vernon -- "the pride of Spain humbled before Ad, Vernon".

The U.S. Navy still had a “grog” ration when I was deployed in 1995. After 30 days at sea we were allotted 2 drinks per sailor every day past 30. We drinkers bought allotments off non-drinkers at exorbitant prices and got good and drunk. Well, as long as we didn’t have watch.

In a very technical sense we still do. If you're out to sea for more than 45 days with no port scheduled in 5 days, the CO can authorize a beer day. But it's never happened for me.

We went 67 days out to sea straight in 2017 and got a beer day. I never thought 2 Miller lites could hit so hard.

Ok, I really have to give respect for those "way-HEY"s. Sea shanties are frequently work songs, and going hard during the parts that need effort is a good nod to where they came from. I could really feel you hauling while you sang.
Funny how sea shanties are "all the rage" now, but 5 or so years ago when Assassins creed black flag came out and literally had 20+ addictively lovely shanties ot went nowhere.
Tik-Tok and RUclips shorts are a better launching pad for it.
If a good -and popular- remake of Black Flag would come out today you would have a good chance they would be popular as well. The same goes for the music in Red dead 2.

"The Wellerman" actually references an Australian shipping company, Weller Brothers, which was the main supplier of provisions to whaling stations in New Zealand and Australia.

The whole seaman thing reminded me about a fun fact about sea voyages and booze: The Norwegian aquavit called Linie, or Linje (which means Line), is traditionally sent on a long sea voyage across the equator. The people who started this tradition had noticed that the spirits tasted much better after returning from said voyage. So, they started sending barrels of the stuff on ships from Norway to Australia and back, thus crossing the equator (the 'line') twice. Apparently, something about the movement, humidity, and fluctuating temperatures added flavour and caused the maturing of the spirits to happen much faster. They've tried to replicate the process, but apparently nothing compares to the real deal, so to this day, barrels of Linie Aquavit are sent on this journey before being bottled up, ready to be sold!
For those interested in some cool history, The Longest Johns who originally recorded Wellerman which Nathan Evans covered made a song called Fire and Flame about the Halifax explosion in 1917. A French cargo ship named Mont-Blanc bringing munitions collided with a ship leaving the harbor of Halifax, Canada. The Mont-Blanc caught fire and eventually exploded, effectively leveling a large portion of the town and killing nearly 2000. The force was so great that Mont-Blanc was utterly destroyed, and its anchor was found launched 3.2 kilometers away.

Rum was illegal in England, because it was produced almost entirelly in Spanish colonies.
Back then England and Spain were mortal enemies, so, no imports from them.
And the englishmen had a strong sense of national pride, so smuglled rum was very rare indeed.

Did "shantie" come from the French "chanter" or the English "chant"? Well, the English "chant" came from the French "chanter," so...
Also, a lot of sailors' vocabulary borrowed French words and bastardized them a bit (ie. "parler" = "parlay" or "parlee"), so it's more likely it was directly from French rather than indirectly from French through English.

One more for The Longest Johns! I've been a fan of shanties and other seafaring songs since before Black Flag was released.
Funny story, when I worked overnights at walmart, I taught my coworkers several short haul shanties and lead them as we down stacked pallets to keep everyone moving and generally in the same time. Eventually Assistant Manager Short, Squat, and Stupid told me to cut it out as it was "disruptive," but made the mistake of saying "no more shanties" after I tried explaining. So I complied, no more shanties. I taught them fo'c'sle songs instead and got away with it for another three months until said assistant manager decided to actually show up and do her job again.

Smith and Cross is amazing. It's also 57 ABV, because it's navy strength. That's rum speak for barrel strength. It has these wonderful coconut, banana, caramel notes on the nose and is surprisingly smooth for a 57% alcohol spitit.
It's also less than 30 bucks.

Greg. As a US Navy sailor, I have to inform you that we pronounce fo'c'sle with a long O sounding more like "foe''.
As another USN vet, I verify the above statement as accurate. Also the constant mispronouncing of fo'c'sle wrong was driving me bananas in the video.

What you're talking about with sugar bringing out other flavors is a huge thing in the tea tasting communities. Fruit flavors, especially, sing when sugar's in the mix.

I actually have my own version of The Wellerman. It's essentially an Old Fashioned but sub rum for whiskey and I use this Earl Gray syrup I have. It's surprisingly good for what's literally sugar and tea and rum!

Because of mercantilism, by which no trade between colonies and nations other than their colonisers was legal, the only rum available to England prior to securing a rum producing colony would have to have been smuggled by rum runners and thus unviable to the utterly massive british navy.

Green tea would in fact be more period appropriate! I was actually just researching this for a project of my own the other day. Apparently black tea as we know it most likely wasn't actually developed until the early 1800s. Any references to "black tea" from before then would actually be referring to something like an oolong - partially oxidized green tea, with a flavor somewhere between green tea and what we would call a black tea.
You should make a drink thats based off of “the egg” from the mandalorian. Could be some sort of a sour as well.
