Brendan Hall There’s 3 main types of irony; dramatic, verbal, and situational. Verbal is basically sarcasm, situational is like when you decided not to smoke when you were younger but ended up dying of lung cancer at a younger age than your friends that did smoke, and finally dramatic is an exaggeration of situations like when a twelve year old thinks his teacher is a Nazi because he gave him a mean look.
irony - a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result. "the irony is that I thought he could help me" · [more]. I think post-irony is taking the humour part seriously
Excellent reading. The Eyes Wide Shut aspect was very true. The internet was on its way up in the late 90s, and Kubrick may have foreseen some of that world of facelessness, hyper-judgement, hyper sexualization, and gatekeeping.
Ermm. The masks in Eyes Wide Shut represent social media..? I thought of it representating the dark human nature revealed by anonymity, something that is prevalent on the internet, but the way it's said in this video just seems crass..
Bill asking the gay hotel clerk in Eyes Wide Shut about his pianist friend's whereabouts is one of my all time favorite Kubrick scenes. Alan Cumming plays it so tongue in cheek.

An excellent essay as a primer, though I'd love a 15 minute followup with far more examples and specific analyses. Think you could make that happen eventually? :D
I'm flattered you liked it that much. I did have to fit to a certain time constraint. But what I wish I could include as further examples are, of course the end line of Eyes Wide Shut and the "Surfin Bird" music cue in Full Metal Jacket to support the post-ironic thesis.
It's still real crazy that he died on March 7th of 1999 and 666 Days Later was the first day of 2001. You can ask Google home or Alexa how many days are there between March 7th of 1999 and January 1st of 2001 and it gives you that answer
Great video, Kubrick is at his best as a ironist and satirist. Why Strangelove, Barry Lyndon and Full Metal Jacket are the films I have most affection for. Would have loved more analysis of The Shining. An attempt I think to almost satirize the horror genre. But one, I think, that failed miserably. Tonally so off
I think what he meant is that there's always the willingness to be an anonymous voyeur in society. EWS reflects it whereas social media facilitates it.
No it was not...social media started around 2004. I was on the internet during the late 90's. The late 90's had Yahoo! chat rooms, Yahoo! Games, and Newgrounds.com and Geocities if you wanted to make your own website.
pyrotechnick It was about secret societies, period. And main cast paint it just like that. Tom scientology and Nicole whose father was satan worshiper.
I find my self laughing out loud during every Kubrick movie. People characterize him purely as a cold genius but that's ridiculous and just makes me think they aren't engaging with the films in good faith whatsoever
It's way more of a product of the classical Hollywood system than it is a Kubrick film. Even so, I agree it's underrated. If you compare it to other Hollywood historical epics from that time (Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments, for instance), Spartacus holds up as the best, in my opinion. Now, if you compare it to other Kubrick films, it's one of the worst.
what is described here as post-irony, simply a term for explaining kubric's artistic failures, certain scenes are simply badly written, but fans always try to defend him, as if he was an infallible genius, always right, never made any mistake. bullshit.
Only by making mistakes can you ever hope to move forward. I'm sure SK was fully aware of this. He was certainly fallible but that goes for any genius, Einstein, for example, still believed in God even though his theories suggested differently.
Agree with your statement...but your example about Einstein is wrong. I can explain but i'll just refer to wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_and_philosophical_views_of_Albert_Einstein#Personal_God
it's very rare that I find myself wishing a RUclips video was longer.
this was great; I'd really like to hear this topic explored in more depth.
me too.
The death scene of Brian in Barry Lyndon was very moving and touched deeply on the audience. I cried.
1qwasz12 thanks for The Spoiler
I didnt saw The Movie
@@heisenberg3259 The movie's narrator tells us in advance so I didn't really spoil it. Go see the movie. It's my fave.
Nobody even knows what ironic means, now we have post-ironic. Oh, great.
how Ironic? Hahahaha :)
Brendan Hall ,lol

I think that's more how the internet generation interpreted Kubrick's film rather than what Kubrick might have foreseen.
Or that people have always been judgemental and that wasn't just invented with the Internet
Masks and internet was farfetched.
@Inge Fossen Interesting. Can you give example of double irony?
My favourite Director. Nicely done!
Kubrick is the undefeated king of the Oxymoron
hey guys, i’ve ran out of video essay ideas so i’m gonna make a video about KUBRICKIAN IRONY!!!!¡¡¡¡!!!

fresh insight intepreting Kurick's! Thanks
An absolutely accurate reading of Kubrick. Thorough, concise and refined.

my thoughts exactly
That "prediction of social media" line made me say fuck off out loud

kubrickian is the most pseud term I've ever seen.

In what font are movies' titles written?
I was thinking "damn no shot from Eyes Wide Sh- Oh okay perfect"
no Kubrick did not predict social media when he made Eyes Wide Shut. That was a massive reach there
I think what he meant is that there's always the willingness to be an anonymous voyeur in society. EWS reflects it whereas social media facilitates it.

"Thank god for the sickle cell"
I can't think of any other writer or director who captures humor quite like Kubrick. Can you guys name anyone?
Maybe Tim Burton both are both autistic artists like me.
Marcel Zachary was just about to say that both brilliant and unique 👊🏾
Coen Brothers
Laughed for this tiny.... jumping into the bigger now...
How could you even dare not put a single word on Dr Strangelove
all work and no play makes jack a dull boy 😂
How did you find footage of Fear and Desire?
How did it get on Netflix? Pretty sure most prints of it were destroyed.
Destroyed? What? lol. Fear and Desire was released on blu ray in 2012.
Well, Kubrick went out of his way to keep it out of circulation during his life.
I,venever seen a review of spartacus..why is that?

his films have plenty of it. they're not "cold" like people say.
good viideo, i've watched it twice
Brillant.
The Mickey Mouse Club tune is rather similar to the "G.I. Song" sung by "Dick and his buddies" in the 1946 movie "Janie Gets Married."
Brendan Hall it's a part reference to that.
Did Kubrick say so?
I ended up just watching the clips
Hail Kubrick
Please tell me what film is at 3:00 minutes
Kubrick loved war
So, Strugeaon's law?
+ProperGanderSaul That reality is indistinguishible from its parody.
+ProperGanderSaul Which one is the beyond parody thing then?
+ProperGanderSaul Thats it.
The shining and 2001
nice
Kubrick, Has never been near a war.
Northern Jackalope He lived on planet Earth.
He was surrounded by war.
Have you?
Five whoppers and five
More whoppers!
longer
Is this supposed to be funny, or ironic? He says this while showing showing from the shining. Why would a scene from the shining be funny?
The shining is fucking hilarious, you take horror off the list, black comedy is the genre it has the most affinity to
This video is a great example of how you can speak for 5 minutes without actually saying anything.
your Kubrick takes are terrible.. like awful. You are not reading him well at all, just positioning him to support your pre views of the world.
I love Kubrick, but his fans are insufferable
there are fans, and then there are lunatics. They have turned film analysis into a religion.
