@@williambrown1095 That's quite terrifying One is just having fun and coulf basically die mid battle because of a Heat Stroke or just Over doing the fight.
When you think about it, we are truly living in the strangest period of history. Wars throughout the world were carried out like this for a major part of human history, in which you and your allies fight in large formations so you can see the enemies and they can see you, then the battle starts and you have to go close into a more 'intimate' melee range, and with every attack you can see the effect it has on the enemy. Then fast forward to our time, the only period where wars are carried out most of the time without really seeing the enemy with eye vision, soldiers shooting or suppressing enemy position is the norm, formations are smaller and more dynamic, and long range bombardment is preferable.
And everyone can participate. Not just the fighting, which is for all genders, ability levels, and ages. Someone has to do the rest of it: music, dancing, medieval classes, planned gatherings. If you're a juggler or magician; musician, dance enthusiast, history geek of any kind, or are interested in cloth/fabric/sewing, or nearly any handcraft one can think of....there is definitely a place for you!!! If you are a cook, baker, brewer or user of herbs, so very welcome!!! If you are a medical person/emt there is a tent which would be delighted to have your services an hour or two a day. Leave your phone, your camera, your computer and video games at home. Just for a few days. Be who YOU want to be. I found it very refreshing. Pennsic Wars on pause for COVID, next one will be the biggest ever!!! Has been capped at 15,000 attendees and I've seen idlers turned away. Tickets are a year in advance. See you at the next one!

Very sadly, my friend John Leland (5:55), Baron Sir Jehan de la Marche, passed away on the 15th of May 2024. He was an SCA mainstay and founded the Barony of Middle Marches in Ohio in 1970. He participated in the first Pennsic War and attended every war but one from the event's founding until his passing. His charming personality, erudition, humility, and creative involvement in the Pennsic War will leave a big hole in the event with his passing, and I hope that he will receive a worthy and fitting tribute at this year's war, as befits an honourable knight of such standing. He was the very epitome of the scholarly gentleman and will be greatly missed. Farewell, John 🍻
And the virus hits! Dang. now i'll be 70 at 49 {delayed from this year and I'll have to still be fighting at 71 to make it a good time to retire. [ok, I'll do combat archery and light weapons. just not the same as heavy weapons}
William Brown Oh wow! That’s amazing! I’ve tried to do target practice in Archery. Yeah, I was really disappointed when it was canceled from the virus 😔
After reading the comments I would like to clarify a few things. First, there are over 10, 000 that show up at Pennsic. I would say around 1,000-2,000 actually do heavy weapons fighting. To even be on the battle field you have to have an authorization card which proves you know how to protect yourself and take a hit. Also all of the armor has to be inspected and signed off on before you can fight. I have been going since Pennsic 32. The weapons are all made of rattan and covered in duct tape to make them look like steel. When you do get hit good it hurts like a SOB. Broken bones do happen at times. I loved the documentary. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you all in 2022 if it isn't cancelled for a third year. Slainte!

I fought in Pennsic 25 (God I'm getting old!) We were 3000 fighters on the field, out of 10 000 participants. Well, check-in stopped counting at 10 000 because there were not supposed to be more than that in a tent encampment. Someting about, if it was bigger than that it would count as a town and need its own emergency services.

I'm crying, I love this so much. The emotional moments are real, although the setting is just as much make believe (as the daily real world is), giving it even more legitimacy to me to build a _happy_ and _wondrous_ world. Also, the British historian man toward the end seems very intelligent and meek. Perfect person to listen to and have you explain things
American history is shit. All anyone knows about is the american civil war and their role in ww1 and ww2 which were both mainly in europe. Sorry but you will have to wait at least another 500 years to be able to have enough for people to roleplay about on.

I haven't played in the SCA for several years due to a number of things (one of which is focusing my free time on MY RUclips channel), and I hadn't realized until now how damn MUCH I miss this game. There's a great cameraderie felt after you spend all day sweating, and sometimes bleeding, in the hot sunand then get back to your camp and spend time with the family you've chosen... not to mention the sheer adrenalin-filled high of charging across the field at 1000 or so people with weapons in their hands with your brothers and sisters at your side. Now where did I put that helm...
LOL, even though I retired from fighting a few years back, still sit in my tent on the hill watching the battles. Only down side is the walk down the hill to get to town to do some shopping. (Lord Thurkill L'Armeurier Barony Northwoods, Pentamare region, Midrealm)
All bullshit aside, LARPing like this is *extremely valuable*. There are few to no reasons why 10,000 would amass on a field and melee fight. Thanks to LARPing, all of us get to see what the scale of a pre-firearm battle would look like. It's outstanding to see, and it's a benefit to the goofiness of LARPing.

Why am I only hearing about this now?! THOSE ARE MY PEOPLE!

Slainte!
