- The sustainable Findhorn eco-village has proven to be unbelievably advanced. With hundreds of residents, Findhorn is possibly the most successful eco-village in the world. They utilize solar energy, wind power, use recycled materials for homes and even have their own Earthship in their community. Many residents of Findhorn, some who live in retired whiskey barrel homes, came to Findhorn after finding enlightenment during California’s hippie movement. After many decades of development the people of Findhorn seem to have found total happiness. Would you live here?

What’s the most important thing the world could learn from here?
That there is a difference between Spiritual and Religious? Those that understand that understand the world better. Nice place, it seems to mostly work out.

That, for the longest time in Man's history, we never needed Governments to live, let alone to create!
I spent six months at Findhorn in my teens and did the experience week. It was a miraculous experience to see people, without coercion, and who were complete strangers come into collaborative attunement. I've never seen anything like it as a power structure, which makes me think that it was not used as the protocol for sacking some of the employees, or for taking revenge.

Funny thing is I need to finish my thesis for this Friday and my subject is intentional communities (including ecovillages) as a tool for a socio-ecological transition.

Olivier - I would love to read your thesis. My life in now pretty much dedicated to researching Eco-Villages and learning all I can about how to live sustainably. Have you checked out Diana Leafe Christian's books and Voice of the Earth by Theodore Roszak?
Living with the land and in an environmentally friendly way isn’t cultural appropriation of native peoples from the Americas. Especially when you’re in Scotland 🤦♂️ all cultures of humanity have had a more tribal stage and it is a good place to look back at for ideas of how to live better
People just like to get upset. Funnily enough, living sustainably is a good way to prevent being cancelled affecting someone too much.
That implies only Native Americans can only exist in wild, untamed land while everyone else can live in cities.

I don’t believe he said anything about America. He said Indigenous people meaning non Caucasian. He was erroneous in his statement of saying “we’re all indigenous” because actually Caucasian’s aren’t indigenous to any part of the world. Science has proven that the Caucasian people have only been here 6000 years but the Original people of the earth have been here since it was made 🤷🏾♀️ But i wouldn't consider it appropriation but intelligence to recognize what your people have done as a means of industrial progress hasn't been the best for healthy living.

Findhorn is a really special place - the community and the area. You will see faeries
I like the idea. But as a city planner there are some things that worry me. If this is such a "sustainable" place, it's very low density which will inevitably lead to higher car usage. Having your own food grown locally is great, but people still have jobs and family and things to buy which they then will get in a car to go to. Great if they can do car sharing, but ideally we should have entire towns like this with medium densities.
Usually these ecovillages are on owned land, and as long as taxes are paid people aren't too concerned leaving for jobs. Your job is to help run the ecovillage

When I watched though, there were a ton of advertisements. I guess that's one way to further the channel, but it was a bit over the top.
What a fascinating place. I think it goes to show that the barriers to living like this are not difficult to overcome… With the exception of market forces making land unobtainable in many places. It seems like off grid living technologies keep improving, if we can find a way to reign in capitalism to allow for sustainable models we may have a chance!
It is happening already. I recently got interested in all this and planning to build my own organic house. In many rural places land is still affordable. Mostly rules are as such that because these houses have no concrete foundation and are easy removable... it is allowed to build them. Those countries or regions, cities who don't like these projects are often ambitiously fought by those trying to go through with it and mostly with success.
No one can prohibit you of building a shelter, a home on a piece of land. I think it has something to do with human rights. So the future looks good in that regard.
Also it is already helping out homeless people in Africa as there are cob house projects being set up.
It's a very interesting societal shift/evolution which i only recently gotten aware of.
The first, and still probably the best. Anyone who knows anything about spirituality or sustainable living or loving the Earth, knows about Findhorn. It is proof that we can be sane if we want to❤️

@@OfftheCuff_Series I would say it’s the first in the western culture in modern times, at least as far as I know. There are other cultures who have had such Villiage straight through to the present day. And like you said in the video, the west was like this long ago too. But Findhorn was and still is unique. (It’s the Divas🤗)

Interesting place for sure, pretty too, but I feel like more questions could've been asked. Especially using the fire at the end as a segue. How is it governed? Is it direct democracy because it's (relatively) small as far as population goes? They got a council of elders situation? Do they have a fire-station, is the lack of one the reason the buildings were completely lost, and if so are there plans to fund and organize one? How is crime, such as the arson, responded to? Exile? Community-appointed Sherrif? Impromptu militia? Again, I like the architectural and sustainability stuff, but I'd have to know more about the goings-on and maintenance before I could ever give it a try.
People do not risk burning down buildings for no reason , this man was at his wits end after he lost everything and then this so called community tossed him out . THAT is when we come together to do ALL we can to keep a tribe member from falling through the net . That was VERY revealing . There seems to be a lack of compassion and willingness to compromise when members are struggling and need their community the most . I felt repulsed when they stated they let a member go after he lost everything and sick to my stomach . Besides you need money and lots of it to be a part of Findhorn . It is a very exclusive club as far as I can make out. I looked into it myself and realised just how exclusive it was
It's a basic respect for nature. The less we contaminate our earth, the better our lives will be. Common sense Dude 😎👍

We need to build an underground self-sustained community, to protect it from the hotter sun of the future. All water needs to be reclaimed & recycled. No loss of water. Unless you live near the ocean. And you can desalinate ocean water.
Just saw the video of the eco village in the Netherlands, both have good ideas and good intentions but why do these places always seem to be a mess ? Findhorne is a bit behind the times, they’d be better to be using a different system to heat their homes rather than wood. It all seemed fine in the 70’s….
Reminds me of the communes prevalent in the seventies. Here in the states most (if not all) of them failed. The most important thing the world could learn from them? Probably that even in a "Utopia" you can have disgruntled employees.

i love everything about this except for the nutty spircituality side of it , and that is why it isn't much more popular ...
so this man spent his time energy and probably love investing in Findhorn and then the moment he came across struggles to survive , this community turned their back on him , wow . Would not touch this place with a barge pole . I empathise with this man, to go to such an extreme indicates just how deep his heart break and hurt was , he lost everything. You also HAVE to have money in the first place to be a part of a community / life like this or at least in this one you do , as was proven here , the moment you struggle you are cut loose , not integrated back or given a life line

Maybe, most likely not though. Guns are highly regulated in the United Kingdom. Rural areas are more common for guns but doesn’t seem to me like they are farming lots of animals or anything from what I’ve watched so far, so I doubt they would be able to get a license for a gun in that case. Guns are treated like tools for civilians in the UK while military and certain police officers have guns for the defence of the people. I’d say it’s fairly successful, although don’t let anyone tell you there hasn’t been shootings and stuff. My auntie worked in a school that had a shooting and tragically many young children died. Shootings aren’t nearly as common here in the UK as they are in the USA, thankfully for us. So in short, probably not. Sorry for rambling!

The great thing about these places is you can show up with nothing, put in the work, and have a place to belong. You definitely don't have to be rich

I support the effort but don't see the need for the Halloween costume and required attitude adjustments.
These communities are little known because they're uncomfortable for the average Joe to take seriously.
I don’t see how they have a cultist mentality at all, they promote religious freedom and don’t require anything from residents other than that they agree to uphold pretty basic human virtues like being kind, respectful, helping with community work etc. If people freely practicing spirituality without the dogmatic confines of structured religion makes you uncomfortable, thats something you need to work on yourself.

Climate Change may be a hoax, but the environmental damage that is happening definitely isn't. These people are heroes in their own right, even if it just by living at peace in their little community.

I was around in the 1970’s and they were predicting a global ice age, not global warming. This “ice age” was going to destroy all crops and we were all going to go hungry. That’s why you see these older eco-villages growing their own crops.
