I slowly decluttered my entire house over 2 years by doing one thing at a time just like you recommend. One drawer, one cabinet, one surface at a time. Let me tell you all once you start you really can’t stop. That satisfaction is addictive.

"Embarrassing" is definitely relative! They are definitely embarrassing to me because I put myself on RUclips talking about all sorts of clothes and style topics yet I have a half inch of dust on my side table. Blah!

I just discovered this video today (have enjoyed numerous others of yours) and this is a great approach for me because I get overwhelmed far too easily. (I judge myself a lot, too, but that's a different problem.) However, while I agree that clutter is relative, your idea of it does make me cackle with laughter! I grew up in a hoarder household and I fight my own tendencies in that direction every day. Now that I'm trying to help my mother clear out my childhood home, the idea of even a half inch of dust being the problem would be a dream. I love the idea of setting the "before" to ominous music but I want to find some very lighthearted themes for the "after." Kiki's Delivery Service, anyone? Thank you for all your irreverent looks at some of the Gospels Of Style (*Jaws theme*)!

This is an adorable (and fun perhaps?) way to at least attempt anew a de-clutter project. I will try it. It’s very creative and adds a playfulness to it. Btw, good for you that your areas of concern are what they are. Those I could deal with! I get it though, when all of them are chirping at us all at once it gives the same feeling of overwhelm and a sense of wanting to bolt. Thank you for this fresh approach to what is often a stubborn issue. I am enjoying your videos! 👩‍🎨💕

I love your delivery method for any and all information you share with us - you are absolutely hilarious! You know, as I think waaaaaay back, my older relatives all did this on the regular (sans cell phone, natch). You would see them get up and fiddle with a small area until it looked perfect; it makes me wonder, is this how their homes were picture perfect - to my eye, at least - all the time? I think you may have just cracked a mystery for me, because these ladies were always busy cooking or keeping the animals that I rarely saw them do what I call a proper clean (why is wasting 25% of the weekend ‘proper’ to me? Perhaps a question for a therapist). Another reason that there wasn’t much clutter, at least in my humble opinion, is that they didn’t have as much ‘stuff’. That fact really hit home for me when I realized that my mother and two of her sisters shared a single clothes closet. The room had one small three-drawer dresser at the end of the double bed and there was one small nightstand, and that was it for the three girls. Even though I am absolutely guilty of spoiling all nine of my grandchildren, I want them to learn where they came from and be grateful - not demanding - for anything they receive. With the way social media is today, that’s darned hard!

I must be a hopeless cluttercase, aesthetically - as I watched your little horror movies, they all looked lovely and cozy to me.
And it's not just that "other people's clutter looks better", I have a distinct memory from my student days when I watched my watercolours between bookpiles on the floor, and had a proud thought "it looks so bohemian and artistic".
But I'm all for doing boring stuff one step at the time. I realized tidying is much easier when I just let me do one simple task in however wrong order it is. Like when I have a sudden urge to wipe dust from all my living room surfaces I can access, I do it, without organizing all stuff neatly and making more surfaces accessible. When I have an urge to wipe dust from under my bookshelves, I do it, instead of taking carpets out first. I don't need to wipe the whole living room floor - even half cleaned floor is cleaner than the floor that I left uncleaned forever because it was too intimidating, and if the urge hits me often enough, then even the whole floor becomes easier.

I used your approach this morning with my kitchen, and it is genius! Knowing I would be watching a before and after “movie” made me feel more motivated to do a really nice job, the whole process felt more fun, and then actually watching the two videos one after the other helped me to see how very much nicer the final result was compared to what I started with. I’ll definitely be doing this with other rooms as well!

Love this idea! It makes it fun 😊
Decluttering always involves cleaning & decision making so anything we can do to make it amusing & more interesting is very helpful. I discovered when my son was a newborn ( over 20 years ago! Yikes!) 😳😳 that because we were taking lots of pictures without considering how the living room looked, we had pics that showed how messy things were in the background, stuff on the couch, coffee table, cords, etc. So whenever I know that the clutter is building up, I go around the house snapping pics of different areas. I used to be bad about thinking I had to do an entire room to feel like I accomplished something but as I get older I just don't have the same energy.. plus I get cranky if I spend all day working on the house so now I take a corner of the bedroom, two counters in the kitchen, or if I can't see my dining room table because there's a mountain of stuff on it then that's what I focus on for the day. I find taking breaks helps because I'm bad about going non stop until I can't function 😣
I take before & after pictures of everything from my mantle seasonal decor to different projects.. then my phone shows me collages of my work over the years which is fun. It's enjoyable being creative but it's the drudgery that kills the motivation so being able to see a difference after only 10 minutes helps. I'm looking forward to trying your slow motion movie method! 😃 I'm thinking the theme music from Jaws & the Addams family will be appropriate 😉😜😬💀👻 😂😂

Okay, I'll do this. In my garden. My garden and landscaping are the one thing (well, a lot of different separate areas) that I cannot work up the motivation to tackle. I can clean my house, my closets, my kitchen, you name it, 24/7 -- but my garden? Much too big a task, so it doesn't get done. And then I end up taking days off work to catch up, which means vacation days, so that in the end I don't really get a *vacation* vacation -- I get to work in the yard. Doing it this way would help me actually get my vacation.

    • @SusanBame
      @SusanBame 12 дней назад

Day 1: So I went out to the garden at 8:33 and did my video. It was still light. It's now 9:36 and I'm just now back in. I weeded one patch, dug it up a bit, hoed it, smoothed it over, and put in the seeds that I'd bought in MARCH. (It's now mid-June.). I promised myself I'd do at least 10 minutes, and wow -- SO much more done than that. I even worked up a sweat! Yay!!

I have to tell you that your are a mere baby when it comes to cluttering up. I’m a master clutterer and couldn’t possibly show you my slo mo movie. It could take me 10 minutes looking at a single object, remembering when I got it, was it a gift, who gave it to me, is that person still around, should I get in touch.........................before I even began the decluttering!

When I attempt to declutter, it is often to big of a project -then anxiety sets in. Then I rush through it and do a half a_ _ job.

I'm keeping it simple here but yes of course not every movie set is clean and uncluttered. One person said her house looked like the set of Twister. 🤣

Excellent advice, and I'm going to gove it a try... BUT.. your before/afters are NOT inspiring at ALL. I barely noticed the differences, except for the cups being lined up tidied in a row. If anything, going on about your embarrassment, then showing your clips, was like going to "that" friend's house that's always showroom, and her exclaiming horror that her couch blanket was unfolded and a book is on the table. "Oh you caught me when the house is a mess!" I never go to "those" friend's homes, and certainly never invite them to mine.

My house usually looks like a tornado RUclips filming studio but I didn't think that would be relatable. Most people don't have to move their couches and set up curtain backdrops nearly daily. I almost had to "stage" a house to do this video because I live in a chaotic heap of thrift clothes! 😁

I like this idea a lot. I love the slow, steady idea instead of taking a week to Kondo.
Camera, check! One more thing, check!. The camera can help me see what I've not been seeing. It's also objective because it's a bit removed. and has boundaries.
However, I don't want anything to look like a movie because I find movie set uninspiring, not my style. A movie is looking from the outside.
I work from the inside-out. I'm a doer/creator and don't mind making messes as long as I clear the deck afterwards. I have lots of hobbies (passions really), so the minimalist thing is not for me. I will find another phrase instead of whether it looks like a movie. Maybe a Marie Kondo phrase, "do I love this?" instead. Or even, "Will I use this?" Life is change. So maybe, "Has my use for this changed." "Will I need this in my life ever again?"
Thanks for the video, I will give it a try. I've been starting to declutter, and was planning to work in small bits, but somehow I end up doing more and this is a more organized way to do it.
I've done it in the past where I got rid of five things a day, that's 25 per week. I will try this instead. Thanks for the good ideas.

I haven't heard of your particular method. You had hardly anything! Try watching those hoarder videos to see REAL clutter!
I always joke, "let sleeping dust lie"...lol. I've always hated dusting, hate dust!

Sorry, but perhaps one form of clutter might consist of simply being loquacious.

I've never been at a loss for words, that's for sure, but if you didn't like my style, I'm sorry you didn't just watch one of the other million clutter videos. I'm sure there one for you out there. ❤

Why do people start sentences with "sorry" when they are in no way sorry?

This is the first time I've heard of using slo-mo to document declutter befores and afters -- and in a movie frame of reference, too! A unique spin on an issue so many of us have. Thanks for your insight, Diana! 📽🩷
