    Imagine being a mangaka, you work overtime on your own projects and also do assistant work just to survive, your manuscripts are rejected 90% of the time, you manage to get a serialization by a combination of dedication and incredible luck, your series becomes a success when most get cancelled and dissapear into obscurity, your work is going to get an anime adaptation, most of your peers will never experience this, you made it. The animators and the directors work very hard, often not sleeping for days just to meet deadlines on a low budget but they pull through and they make it happen. Your manga's anime adaptation is real, you can't wait to for everyone to see it, apparently it's also going to get an english dub, and then some johnny comelately literally who on twitter who's never created anything of value comes in and changes your work, because apparently "they know better".

      @seg162 5 месяцев назад +83

      @@Twilightiger96 They didn't get a greenlight-- that was lied about, too. The director claimed the show performed poorly in Japan and that's why they are given the allowances they were, but not only did the director ALSO do the same schtick with Ghost Stories with other dubs that he didn't pitch that excuse for, Ghost Stories performed well in ratings during its airing in Japan despite being a filler program.
      The Ghost Stories dub also isn't funny. It might have been funny if the background Foster (the aforementioned director) has been propagating was true, but it isn't, which sucks all the fun out of it. It's _just_ aggressively juvenile and a waste of an opportunity to share Japanese folklore with American kids in favor of fulfilling the same exact impulses that are rightly criticized in every other case of improper localization.

    About three weeks ago the mangaka of Sexy Tanaka-san, Ashihara Hinako, committed suicide because of a similar issue. The live-action adaptation was completely different from the original, and it was received terribly. But the scriptwriter, Aizawa Tomoko, blamed everything on Ashihira, which lead to cyberbullying, and eventually to this. Straying away from the source material is not only disrespectful to the original creator, but it's also a breach of contract if it was specified how strictly the adaptation should adhere to the original story.

    On a side note, why do western people always attributed anything even slightly not 100% man or woman to trans? It's especially noticeable when it comes to any japan related media.
    "Oh, this must be trans" - referring to a tomboy.
    "Oh look, another trans" - referring to a femboy.
    "Yet another trans!" - referring to crossdressers.
    Just why? Like, isn't this just basically forcing YOUR views onto OTHER people/things by not understanding the difference of it?
    Like, imagine if I just label all the guns that sells in America to the public as just "child killers" instead? Or labelling other sexes besides male/female as just "person"? Or any sexual orientations besides heterosexual as just "other-sexual".

      interestingly, this probably has something to do with america having its cultural roots deep in christianity. you'd think that after growing up being told you can only do x or y based on your gender people would revolt by not caring and doing whatever they feel like doing, but ultimately people end up repeating the mistakes of their forefathers in one way or another. if you "can't like blue" because you're a girl, then you become a boy to avoid the effects of inertia. if you like wearing dresses or doing makeup despite being a guy, then you must be a woman (or non-binary); since, you know. people "can't like things that haven't been assigned to their gender".

    In regard to the subject of loli culture I once read that back in 2010, Tokyo legislators were considering broad legislation that would ban works of art that depict characters under 18 in a sexual context. Kentaro Miura (RIP) opposed to this legislation as he believed it would restrict what manga creators can do with children in stories, and young characters in general. He also considered the implication that it could serve as a slippery slope used to push for further censorship of works in the industry. In the end, the bill was rejected.

      in regard to the subject at hand, i'm of the opinion i don't give a shit since its fiction, for the same reason i don't give a shit if you murder someone in GTA or do any number of crimes in games... people always make the argument of "but it normalizes it" well video games normalize murder, i still feel terrible when i hear on the news people get murdered... game of thrones had incest in it, incest is illegal, everyone knows incest is bad, but we aren't advocating for media with incest to be banned... i think on this subject (and one like rape) it's purely looked down more harshly than the other subjects because of the uncomfortable level people feel from it. we have seen blood, gore, death for so long in movies and video games, it's been normalized in those things so we don't feel uncomfortable from it, and the same goes for incest because of how much incest is meme'd (everyone knows the alabama joke) and that has normalized it in media. these things are all still crimes in the real world, and not a single sane person is arguing that murder should be legalized... for me i just apply the same logic to every category, i don't give a shit if someone watches stuff with pretty much any subject, just depending what you watch and your openness about it, i will call you a weirdo, terrible human being, or even a psycho (anyone who watched euphoria and think it's one of the best hentai's would be a psycho).

      @@Mattadork The problem gets a bit more squiffy when you start discussing nuance of what is being said and asked to be censored in regards to loli content. For example, are we talking about characters who are underage, or characters who have petite builds? If we considered how off the rails X has gotten about the subject, a SHORT woman is considered a child and therefore unacceptable (oh and there have been some lol worthy posts that being under 25 makes you a child soo theres that too). Meanwhile, many people who decry loli cause 'its underage characters' seem to have no problem with adult works that depict characters who are canonically 16 doing adult things. It is an "As long as they look old enough" position that is really kinda backwards. Point is the issue has nuances that dont like being discussed, and half the offense taken by some people is hypocritical or pure lunacy

    • @Mattadork
      @Mattadork 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Omegaphoenix128 well yeah most hentai the characters in it are high school or younger... so really if they are outraged about 1 subject they should be outraged by all but they aren't because it is how they are drawn, loli is an easy target because despite it not having to do with age, all characters regardless of age are drawn to look cute and to do that they have to be small and/or look younger even if they aren't, this is why i use the "mind test" if we use dragon maid as an example, kanna kamui is clearly a child, she acts like one, plays like one, and talks like one. BUT if we look at shalltear bloodfallen, who is also younger looking, we can tell the way she acts and talks (especially if you are watching with the original japanese VA) she sounds like a very proper adult, and the way she acts is no where the same as kanna, she gleefully kills people for the fun and pleasure of it, she loves antagonizing people, loves watching them fear for their life, none of these qualities are the mind of a child.

    15:21 translations will always have those grey areas as there are words in the Japanese language that do not have an English equivalent, turn into a longer phrase in our language or it doesn't translate at all or doesn't make sense in english. most they can do is try preserve the original meaning of the work while trying to ensure the translation doesn't turn into engrish, but they should never try to flip the script of an original work to intentionally push ideals and topics that were never in the original work.

    I studied translation a bit when I was a student and the very first thing you learn about translation is to keep the author's ideas/opinions/messages. You can adapt the text if necessary (cultural differences/brand names/jokes/lyrics) but you can't go bananas and change evrything you dislike about the author's intention. I'm a bit shocked those so called localizers can almost rewrite the whole script and add their own opinions like that... and they have the audacity to cry about the consequences of their actions. I'm not aware of the situation in Europe but localization seems to be less wild and more respectful towards translators' work.

    Some of the edits made it into the final cut of the English dub of Lovely Complex. User MasterDan posted some clips comparing the dub with the subtitles on screen on Twitter. Scratch Point confirmed this by sharing his Tweet with the attached clips. I definitely won't be buying a physical copy of Discotek's release of Lovely Complex.
    As Scrath Point Z rightfully said:
    "Everyone passing around that one clip to claim "none of the changes made it into the dub" can stop now since some parts of conversations are completely different & phrases like "casual sexism" being dropped."
    People need to rub this in the faces of Discotek, MediaOCD, Justin Sevakis and Sound Cadence Studios.
    I've lost a lot of confidence and trust in Discotek, MediaOCD, Justin Sevakis and Sound Cadence. I'll have to assume that they're probably going for this wider / modern / global audience nonsense. Since they claimed that their rewritten scripts were supervised and approved by the original creators and producers, they'll need to prove that to us by publishing and presenting real unaltered, undiluted, undistorted receipts us, even if this subsequently leads to violations of so-called NDAs. I don't care. As long as they refuse to do so, I might be forced to entertain the thought of boycotting anything Discotek-related, too. Discotek, MediaOCD, Justin Sevakis and Sound Cadence need to be reminded on every single occasion whenever they make official announcements. Saboteurs along with their enablers and apologists need to know that they can't just waltz in and vandalise things actual fans love. Customers and fans vote with their wallets. If those involved abuse the trust of customers and fans, customers and fans will rightfully keep their wallets closed and never come back. Discotek, MediaOCD and Sound Cadence need to heed that advice!
    Again, those involved in translations need to respect the source material and keep the intent and content as close to the original as possible. I'm aware that 1 to 1 translations and that perfection are impossible. Those who want to resort to moral policing have absolutely no right to change content because someone finds it problematic or outdated. No more punch ups, smoothing over "rough patches", etc.. The true fans are the real target audiences. Censorship defenders and apologists should cease spouting this "global / wider / modern audience" or "sensibilities" nonsense!
    These woke localisers need to be added to databases and even blacklisted from the translation profession and the entire Japanese entertainment industry forever.
    Never ever forget! Never ever forgive! Make everyone remember that! So much so that it's (proverbially) burnt into people's minds for all eternity!
    Unfortunately, the honest and professional translators who actually and genuinely enjoy and respect the source material are put in a bad light because of the actions and the behaviour of the rotten apples.

    I'm a ghostwriter for a specific platform I won't name. I started work there feeling really scared about screwing up people's ideas and stuff. After 2 years of putting in the hours, I got to a point where I would be given "problem" orders to "fix". One case stood out to me. A client had requested a biography for a specific target audience and the ghostwriter initially chosen literally. could. not. cope. Putting the spin on it the way the author requested was apparently so antithetical to their being, they effed up really badly. I was called into "revise" but I ended up rewriting large chunks for free because I was incensed. If you don't like the author's targeted audience, don't like the direction of the project, and don't like the topic of the project... Don't. Take. The. Project. But these people are between a rock and a hard place. They want their cake (convictions) and eat it too (no sacrifices). As a writer and ghostwriter, I find this kind of story to be an absolute nightmare... Imagine finding out that your work and ideas were butchered. Even worse, isn't this some kind of white privilege or supremacy, eradicating POC's voices??? Or does sexuality matter more than race these days? KEKW. I guess Japanese people, like many Asians, aren't "colored" enough to be protected.

They were proud of their bigotry against bigots. They completely missed the point of the 30 minutes before that was covering professionalism and tolerance, and instead was trying to fit those ideas onto their individual self-expression.
      It's crazy how some people don't consider professionalism anymore. Do your job according to the client's needs once you've accepted the job, follow through until they are satisfied, within the bounds of the agreement. If you don't like it to begin with, don't take the damned job, remain courteous and don't burn your bridges.

    We east asians see the meaning and purpose of marriage as having children and creating a family unit. You can throw all your little exceptions to the rule like muh contraceptions and infertility but gay marriage is an oxymoron, and it makes mockery of the bond between men and women whose relations have an inherent potential to create life. It is fundamentally opposite to gay marriage. You don't even have to be religious to see this. Gays can be in a relationship and commit to each other for the rest of their lives, that's fine- you can even have a ceremony that mimics a real marriage, but the broader society must not call their relationship as marriage, for it is like calling the color white black and vice versa. I have a translation module for my language degree this semester we get taught about just how broad translation can be how many different kinds there are. What's even worse with this shit is that a team of translators have already worked to provide an accurate English script for this product. This localisation team should be making the script appropriate for specific regions and dialects NOT heavily altering the already altered translation. I truly do not understand how these people attain these jobs. They virtue signal their way into well paid positions that could be held by actually creative and hard working individuals. It's an embarrassing insult to the original source material and the translation team that did the direct Japanese to English translation as well.

    I watched the sub of this show a couple years ago, from what I remember, it is one of the only anime that actually has a trans character (and not just a cross dresser). And that characters arc in the show was about how she has to deal with the people who don't accept it, but it doesn't matter what others think, which from my understanding is a lot of trans peoples experience. So if they just took out all instances of people not accepting her, then they just took out the entirety of her character, and the actual representation that this character was able to represent.

      Think about it this way, these mangas are SO popular that they are voted by a discriminating audience week after week, month after month for Shounen Jump, or in this mangas case, Bessatsu Margaret (a shoujo magazine). The audience loved it enough for it to earn its own exclusive manga book, which was then popular enough to earn itself an anime AND a live action movie. Japan is not starved for anime ideas and MANY do not get through the hurdles this one did.
      It was loved so much that it was then brought to the West where the subs have been appreciated for decades. And these idiots think they know better.

A machine translating Japanese to other languages 1-1 is gonna spit out a lot of awkward text that sounds weird to native speakers of other languages. There needs to be some rewriting in order to get sensible grammar and to translate words which may not have an equivalent in other languages. But yeah that's where the localizers need to fucking stop.

      Idgaf, localization has always been a poison. Look at 4Kids. If you're going to watch another culture's media or indulge in their media of any kind then put in the effort to understand it at some level. For decades fansubs will have a translator note that explains something that is potentially lost in translation up on the screen somewhere. That is perfect enough. If I'm reading or watching a work from another culture I want to read and hear the words the author wrote. And if the grammar is "insensible" then it sounds like the translator needs to be fired.
