    When I was a little girl I made a quilt like this for my doll. No one taught me how to do it I just figured it out. Now I am going to make one for my grand daughter's doll 50 years later. Thank you for teaching me the proper way to do it!

    Grandma and sometimes mom also made a lot of our clothes. For years grandma saved up scraps from those dresses. Then Easter of my senior year in high school she gave my sister and I each a quilt made of them. On the back she embroidered to janet from grandma and the date what a treasure. That quilt is now 54 and I’m the old grandma.

    Your tutorials are wonderful. You make hand piecing so fun! We are a rare breed to hand piece. I’ve been told that people don’t understand why I hand piece when it’s so much quicker to use a machine. That may be true but it is so much easier to hand piece, and the results are perfect. I have all the time in the world, so I enjoy hand piecing. Thanks for sharing your talents! Your a real gem in quilters..😉💕🇺🇸

      It helps to slow down to hand stitch if you have a special project you want to make for someone! The machine is fast, but hand stitching makes something special. My example: my daughter is getting married, and I am hand stitching the Wedding Ring quilt for her. Thank you for your comment! Stephanie

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340  2 года назад +3

      Be patient. Look at the clothing to see the colors, textures, extra details (buttons, trim, etc.) and types of fabrics. Then choose ones that really say something to you. Don't worry about a pattern yet. Start to carefully take several pieces apart by cutting neatly to find larger pieces (backs, fronts, sleeves) and put them in a stack together. Save everything at this point. I seldom get rid of any parts until the quilt is done. See if you have a good pile of pieces or need to go back to the original pile and choose something else. Lots of times I all of a sudden say....I think I need that from the pile.
      Start looking at quilt magazines for ideas...just don't look too hard.
      Whatever you do, this is your memory quilt and one-of-a-kind made by you!

    Thanks for the video! I always sew by hand...have been sewing masks by hand. Anyway, I had started a sort of abstract piecing together with scraps last summer(haven't finished) but because it was for fun I didn't worry about doing anything correctly. Now I am making a more conventional quilt for my sister's baby who will arrive in sept. I want to make sure I'm actually making something that will hold together so I wanted to double check on the stitches a hand sewer would use to piece a quilt together. I see you are just using a simple basting stitch. I was using a back stitch before because I thought it might pull apart. But was happy to see if could be done a little quicker! Thanks again for the video!

      Ideas:
      1. In GA we have felt at Walmart & Hobby Lobby. On-line I found some at Etsy and Amazon.
      2. Letters-if you know a teacher, ask if she/he has sets of letters used as templates for making words for bulletin boards.
      Press a piece of freezer paper to the back of your fabric (this will stabilize the material) trace/write your letters on the fabric side and cut out. Remove paper.
      Wonder Web is great to use to press your
      letters to the quilt block; then stitch around.

    Growing up the only blankets we had were hand pieced and made by my grandmother and her sister. They even did appliqué by hand. They very quilted them. They stitched the backs by machine with the old treadle sewing machine and all were tied not quilted. I was an adult before I realized this was not the norm.

    Question - I have tried hand stiching things together, but with the stich you use in this video, what is to keep the thread from gathering and getting all bunched up if it happens to break (during general wear and tear of using a quilt)? Or is that not really a thing, and sewing machines have just made us dependent upon a reinforced stich that isn't necessarily needed? I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340  Год назад +1

      If the thread is good quality and the running stitches are small, it should not be a problem with the piecing work coming apart. I always check the back of the piecing patches and even gently pull apart if I am not sure. When the finished block/quilt is quilted that also helps strengthen the quilt. I knot the thread at the beginning and do several repeat stitches at the end of the run. While sewing I work the blunching and knotting out so there is not a large open space.
      Happy sewing!!

    Thank you very much. Just found your channel. I am relatively inexperienced and I’m stupidly ambitiously trying to hand sew a film reel strip using one inch blocks with a tiny black strip between them. Oh my! Took me a few hours to do just work out my sizes and unsuccessfully piece the two white blocks to the thin black strip in the middle. Looking at your video, I think my failure is because I didn’t open the seams and I wasn’t sure which way to go. I’ll try it again and open the seams. I was also unsure what colour thread to use, black or white. Are there any tips you can give me please? Thank you. New subscriber here.

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340  Год назад

      Since you are just starting, it might help to start with 2 inch blocks (white) with a little wider black strip in the middle. When the black strips are so small they will probably want to be ironed toward the center of the black strip. Opening the seam may not help. Thread-when you sew a line and press it...look at the seam from the outside and see if you like it. Gray often goes well with colors. Welcome to the club of sewers!

  • @Persephone549
    @Persephone549 4 года назад

    Would you say that piecing (or even hand applique) is strong enough to be used as a functional quilt? Or are these solely for decorative use? I plan to sew the blocks by machine, but I really don't think I can do the tight curves on a machine for the applique. I want it to be used as an actual blanket, though, so it needs to hold up.

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340  4 года назад +3

      I'm working on sewing yo yos on to a quilt by hand and been thinking about your question. If the applique piece was larger, I would probably add a little Wonder Web like material to hold it in place before hand stitching and to make the piece more secure. After experimenting a little, I would know how close to the edge to add that material; I dislike trying to sew through heavy/glue stuff. On my yo yos lap top, I am using double thread, close together stitches, and maybe knot more often. This quilt is for everyday use. I hope this helps and happy hand stitching!!
