Hi! I've been thinking about learning how to quilt but don't have a machine or anything yet, but this video was really useful for showing how I could try hand piecing something small to start with! Thank you for the video!
You’re very welcome. You can hand quilt too so there’s nothing stopping you from making an entire quilt by hand 🥰 Start with a small project like a cushion first though, so you don’t overwhelm yourself. A full sized quilt is a lot of work, even with a machine. Let me know how you get on. Kim x
I’m so happy to find your video. I am very interested in “hand quilting” but was looking in the wrong place. I wanted a tutorial to show me how to start from the beginning and not just the end hand quilting piece. So thank you, thank you!. I don’t own a sewing machine but would love to make a quilt. I also find sewing very calming, peaceful and quieting. Now I know to follow your hand piecing videos. Your explanations and tips are so helpful. I’m from California so I also particularly love your accent; so soothing.
Awww you’re very welcome and I’m so glad you enjoyed my tutorial. Hand piecing is very meditative and very good for you, so do keep practicing. I’ll have some more hand quilting tutorials coming out soon so watch out for those ☺️ x
A lot of good suggestion s. I just finishing an applique machine Never again. It was like trying to park a mac semi truck in a mini Cooper parking space . Thanks for tutorial
Great video. I rarely hand piece. I machine piece and hand quilt. But I have two charm packs I can practice on. I have a long train ride coming up next month and this would be relaxing. Thanks for sharing.
That is the way I make my quilts one stitch at a time even when hand quilting , sewing machines and I do not get along at all. Glad you mentioned how to thread a needle most videos show people cut the thread first then thread the needle going against the twist of the thread that’s why you get knots and tangles in the thread.
I don’t mind hand piecing blocks and then quilting them in the machine . I think thats perfectly fine I want to try a quilt as you go type of thing have a good day
Great video, thank you so much for a thorough explanation. I can’t wait to give hand quilting a try. I didn’t know that about pressing to the dark side. Thank you, Geraldine.
💖🌸 Kim you made my day with this video. I find hand stitching, slow stitching, embroidery and all the other names so very relaxing and more me then a machine. So this video was the cat's meow for me! Thank you for the needle threading hints. When I do use the machine I think I will also wet the needle as instructed here to see if it simplifies that as well for I will also continue to use my machines. Thank you for what may seem like simple hints for you can be a sewing dream for this learner.
In the UK, our phrase is "the cat's whiskers"! I love the "Cat's meow" as an alternative 🥰 Glad you love this video and let me know how you get on with your needle threading 😎 Kim x
Thank you for the video, I’m going to teach hand piecing after the new year. I use a much timer needle and my stitches are very tiny. I also pin on the lines, bringing them together is easier. Great vid!
Thank you so much, and that's great to know 🙏 What are you going to cover in your hand-piecing tuition next year? Are you teaching in-person or going online? Kim x
I bought a Clover Desk Needle Threader yesterday and really like it for my Gutermann 50 weight thread but NOT for embroidery thread I will be using your ideas for the embroidery thread and when I do not have that gadget with me which will be often enough while busy on the road this summer. What are your thoughts on Beeswax? I feel it is helpful with embroidery and handsewing. I do not what the long term effects on the thread and or fabric will be however.
Hi Denise, apologies it's taken a couple of weeks to respond 😳 As far as I know beeswax is great for any hand sewing or embroidery and doesn't harm anything (I've never heard anything adverse about it). Don't get it anywhere near your machine though :-) Kim x
Not quite yet; oddly it's on the schedule for next week and then closely followed by some different hand quilting stitches. If you hit the subscribe and notify buttons, the vids should pop up for you 🙂 Kim x
Got very frustrated with my machine last night, and now i don’t trust it at all for my next quilt! I will be attempting to do the entire thing by hand 😨 i enjoy hand quilting, but i have never tried hand piecing!
I was curious how hand piecing is done, but I don’t understand why you made a pencil line on both pieces of fabric, when you only need to see the line on one piece to sew it.
Great question! It’s so you can sew a consistent straight quarter inch seam on the underside too. It’s very easy for the top fabric to look perfect and the bottom fabric to end up a wobbly mess without a line to guide you/your needle. Hope that helps 😊
Ah, yes, I did wonder if anyone would ask 😅 It's a Thimblepad. I can't stand wearing 'proper' thimbles as find they're too cumbersome and not comfortable. I bought a pack of these about ten years ago and still have some left of that original pack (ie a pack lasts a LONG time!). They're small leather discs that stick onto your finger where you need to push a needle. You can't feel a thing, they don't get in the way, and they're re-usable. Truly brilliant! And I stick one on the back of my hand if I need to imminently use it 😄 Search for Colonial Needle Thimble Pads on Amazon.
Hi Anne, when you're piecing, you will need to start and finish your stitching near to the edges of your fabric. Then you won't have any gaps when you join up blocks or rows. Does that help? x
Thank you for this excellent tutorial! Truly perfect for the absolute beginner - ME!
You're very welcome, and thank you 🙏🥰

I find hand sewing to be very relaxing so I always keep a project going, but I also love piecing by machine. 😊
That's a great combination Elsie; do whatever brings you joy 🥰
My 7yo enjoyed learing to hand quilt her first project with your video. Thank you!

I couldn’t agree more Mary, which is why I teach threading that way ☺️ x
@@QuiltWithKim I am glad I am not the only one doing it that way. Best wishes🤗
A most EXCELLENT video. Thank you!
You're very welcome 😊
Thank you so much for this…it was just what I was looking for and you made it so easy to understand.
You’re very welcome; so glad I could help 😊
Thankyou so much Kim, I have cut very small Dresden blades (I.5") and wanted to hand piece them and apply them to a zipped pouch.
Always learning
My pleasure 😊

I'm with you on this one (I don't enjoy hand quilting very much so do all of my own quilting on my machine).

@@QuiltWithKim I never heard of cat's whiskers. Glad we both have a new one now. I haven't had a chance to sew but will be and will let you know.

About the needles:
Sharps are called sharps because there are also embroidery needles which are blunt.
Ooh thank you so much Amanda! I shall remember that for future videos 🤩

Great vid and so helpful! Thank you so mucc. 😄
You’re very welcome ☺️
Can you double the thread? I noticed you didn’t.
Hi Christine, yes you absolutely can 😊
What size needle are you using
Hi Betty, I've covered that in the video at 05:23, but the short answer is a size 10 😌 Have fun!

Couldn't help but try and figure out what was that sitting on top of your right hand. Looks like a blister

@@QuiltWithKim Thank you. 😄 I must admit, I'm quite the opposite, I can't sew without my thimbles!
😄 Definitely each to their own for this one! Do you have a fave type?
@@QuiltWithKim Nah, as long as they fit firmly, and have the indent at the top, I'm good!😀
You didn’t knot at the end of a block, that’s what I will try. I thought we had to knot at the ends. Tysm,
Hey Christine, no need for a knot in the normal sense, but do do a double back stitch to lock your thread into place ☺️ x
@ tysm 💜
I’m confused about what happens when the stitching doesn’t start and end at the edge of the fabric pieces. 🧵
Hi Anne, when you're piecing, you will need to start and finish your stitching near to the edges of your fabric. Then you won't have any gaps when you join up blocks or rows. Does that help? x
