Thanks to you Kristin I hand pieced my very first quilt over the last 2 years. It turned out great. Planning a second hand pieced quilt so came back for a refresher! Thank you for your exceptional instruction!
I have just watched your videos. You have inspired me to give it a try. It would be a great project to take on vacation; sitting by the pool or on the beach etc. Thanks for the excellent instructions in a calming quiet voice. All I would need is patients.
I have literally just started watching similar videos. My mother was a dressmaker and made dresses for us and clients. And she did hours and hours of hand stitching. Watching these videos I find I already know the types of stitches although I didn’t know it had names. Thank you
I'm about to watch a lot of your videos! I have been quilting for about 4 years and have always machine pieced my tops - I think I'm ready to learn hand sewing :)
I bought Jenny Beyers's CD years ago and this explination is the best I have seen since then... Jenny does all her quilt piecing by hand and she says she is faster at hand stitching then many quilters are on a machine... do not know if I believe that but I find hand stitching good for those WAIT IN THE CAR for the kids projects.
I've been sewing my seams from edge to edge. No wonder I am having issues! I'll start drawing all lines at once from now on. Thank you for the helpful video!
When I switched from a rolled knot to a quilter's knot I was able to begin stitching right at the point. It's a tiny knot; but combined with back stitches is super strong.
Hope next video is on piecing patches together.... The first teacher / leader I had in hand piecing showed piecing just like you would sew on a machine.... I later learned to let the seams fly free in a class at a retreat.... could you show the proper way of piecing for those that do not know... THANKS
Hi I had a question I want to hand piece 60 degree triangles for the triangle pop pattern by quiltylove but I wanted to know when handpiecing each side of a triangle do you tie nuts and start again on each side of the triangle?
I can't remember what model that Daylight lamp is, but I also have the Daylight Halo Magnifying lamp and I love it for handwork! Here is a link to the one with the magnifier (aff link): amzn.to/3A4h9kW
Yes, you can, and it's more secure. You make a sort of knot with wrapping your thread around when making your backstitch. I can't remember what it's called, but the wrap creates a figure 8.
You can draw a line on that piece too, but that is more work :) If your need is going straight down, your stitches will be in the right place. You could measure to be sure that they are at 1/4" to reassure yourself that they are fine and then just relax!
In hand piecing you don't sew through those seam allowances. It gives you more options when you press the block. In another video about sewing through seam allowances, I show how to stitch pieces together with no gaps.

Thank you for this video! I’m new to quilting and I really want to make a quilt all by hand.

Me too! Always on the machine!

Thank you so much for this!! I have quite a stash of teeny squares that I'm going to try hand piecing!
Perfect!
This was very helpful. Thank you!
This is a wonderful video!! Thank you.
Thanks so much! I'm glad that it was helpful!
I have used a SPIT KNOT which is similar to your rolled knot for over 60 years .... works for me.
I've been sewing my seams from edge to edge. No wonder I am having issues! I'll start drawing all lines at once from now on. Thank you for the helpful video!
My pleasure! There are a lot of advantages to having your seam allowances free! It gives you lots of choices on pressing the block and spinning seams.
When I switched from a rolled knot to a quilter's knot I was able to begin stitching right at the point. It's a tiny knot; but combined with back stitches is super strong.
Thank you, great video! I'm assuming you can where the mask on either side even with the pleats???
Yes! It's completely reversible!

Yes! It's like you read my mind! That video is now live and can be found here: ruclips.net/video/qyCvw4_nfk8/видео.html

I would just do a backstitch on both sides of the seam intersection and keep stitching! No need to tie a knot at each seam intersection. :)
What type of thread do you use for hand piecing
It’s personal preference. I like to use 80 wt Aurifil because it’s so thin but still very strong. Regular 50 weight thread works just fine though.
what kind of lamp is it that you are using? Does it magnify and it is an LED?
I can't remember what model that Daylight lamp is, but I also have the Daylight Halo Magnifying lamp and I love it for handwork! Here is a link to the one with the magnifier (aff link): amzn.to/3A4h9kW
I wonder if you can stitch without a knot at all and depend on back stitching only?
I have hear that people do that, but it makes me nervous :)
Yes, you can, and it's more secure. You make a sort of knot with wrapping your thread around when making your backstitch. I can't remember what it's called, but the wrap creates a figure 8.
How do I ensure that the running stitches are also on the drawn line of the piece of fabric underneath ?
You can draw a line on that piece too, but that is more work :) If your need is going straight down, your stitches will be in the right place. You could measure to be sure that they are at 1/4" to reassure yourself that they are fine and then just relax!
@@kristinesser thank you 😊
How come you don’t start at the very edge and go across? Wouldn’t that leave gaps when putting pieces together?
In hand piecing you don't sew through those seam allowances. It gives you more options when you press the block. In another video about sewing through seam allowances, I show how to stitch pieces together with no gaps.
Are you only working with one thread here?
Yes, just a single strand.
