🧐 WOF in Quilting EXPLAINED for beginners
Просмотров 31321 день назад
Sewing and Quilting are full of three letter acronyms, and WOF is probably one of the most common ones. But what does it mean, and how to you cut WOF anyway? In this video I take you through the size of WOF in fashion or dressmaking fabrics and the WOF in quilting fabrics, and why they are a bit different. I'll also show you to cut WOF because that comes up in patterns - a LOT! Hope it helps. 0...
🛑 The #1 Fabric Mistake You're Making RIGHT NOW!
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.28 дней назад
Your border and sashing fabric are critical for making your quilt look amazing, so the colours have to be right. But quilt patterns encourage to go scooting off to your local quilt shop to buy all of your fabrics in one go. Unless you are buying the exact fabrics that the pattern suggests, I would say this is a BIG mistake. That is, it's a big mistake to buy the fabrics for your borders or sash...
😱 STOP Thread Jamming with THIS Solution!
Просмотров 302Месяц назад
It's SO annoying when your thread jams and creates its own nest underneath your presser foot, AND gets your fabric stuck in your feed dogs. I hear you. If you've carefully got your fabric out (do that by gently wiggling your hand wheel and (also) gently pulling your fabric), then there are a few solutions you can try. First up re-thread your top thread and bobbin. If that doesn't work, then you...
❌ STOP Using the WRONG Stitch Length for Sewing!

If your machine is sewing or quilting with tiny stitches, and you've tried re-threading top thread and bobbin, then there may be a very simple answer. Generally if nothing 'technical' is wrong, then it will be to do with your stitch length settings. Not loving basting? Personally, I don't mind it so much: I spray baste but it IS still a faff to do. And hand quilting takes SO long (admittedly that may just me). 🤯 How to calculate framing strips on quilt blocks
Просмотров 1702 месяца назад
When you're making a sampler quilt, you will need to bring each of your quilt blocks up to the same size so that all of your quilt blocks fit together nicely. The strips to bring them up to the same size are called framing strips and you would add these before you add your borders. Working out the maths of these framing strips though can drive most sane quilters potty. So, I've put a tutorial t...

    Really good video, again, Kim! I do like that you do it all slowly and repeat steps so we can see exactly how it's done. This is something I want to try next time. I quilt on my domestic and it's so tedious wrangling the quilt through the small throat of my machine! Love the pattern of the block. I never really get the disappearing nine patch and why it's called that....

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim День назад

      Hi Helena 👋🏻 Thank you 🙏 And yes, hand quilting is definitely worth trying if you have to wrangle your quilt and machine whilst they are ganging up against you 😀 The block I used in this video was a disappearing four patch, however the principle of the dis. four patch and dis. nine patch is the same…. You start with a normal four or nine patch, then you cut it in two or more places, shuffle the pieces around and re-stitch back together in the new positions so that the original four / nine patch pattern has disappeared 👻. Does that help? Xx Ps My phone suggested the ghost emoji so he got to stay to make us all laugh 😁 (I’m easily pleased 😂) x

    This is for me. Only been quilting since July and took much more extra care on my cutting yesterday. @QuiltWithKim Hi Kim I trimmed and squared off all the blocks, making sure I saved the points of the triangles....well most of them, and those that I couldn't weren't too bad. Came out better than expected. I ordered a rotating cutting board which came today, so I'm hoping that will also be of a help, not having to move my fabric so often when cutting. Another reason maybe that some came up too short...I don't usually cut more that one or two layers at a time, but I was cutting 4 at a time on this project. I'll be starting on a new quilt top in the next day or two when I can decide exactly what pattern I'd like to make, so hoping I can improve yet again 😊🤞💞

    I worry about seam ends unravelling , even after sewing over them, say in the wash or kids rough and tumbling, repeated folding etc. Something to consider could be your thread. A cotton thread is malleable while I’ve noticed the slight springiness of a polyester thread could tend to make it spring apart. It doesn’t want to be forced into the fabric to lock with the other thread, it wants to be straight, ie unravelled. They also say that cotton thread is better because it’s no tougher than the fabric and so won’t tend to saw its way through your quilt over the years we hope it will be used.

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim 6 дней назад

      Hello, so sorry it's taken a few days to reply. Yes, you are absolutely right - poly thread is tougher than cotton so can 'cut' through the cotton fabric in time, hence using cotton thread as it's the same as the fabric. And as for unravelling - I've never had a seam unravel once you've stitched over it; however, if you want to do a little lock stitch, there's no real reason why not 😊 Kim x

    Everywhere I looked, everyone said it’s the take up lever. Mine was at the top so it was driving me crazy as to why it kept unthreading! But thanks to you I realized it was because I threaded the needle from back to front instead of front to back. I used a threader because I can’t get the sewing machine to thread it with the built in feature so I decide to thread it myself and voila! I did it backwards lol thank you for saving my life!

      I know, it's a weird how other colours do that. I don't think it's helped by the cameras as they alter the colours, and the heart is a lime green in real life. However, the purpose of what I was trying to say holds true, and that is different coloured borders will alter that look and feel of the block, so it pays to audition carefully 😊

  • @marinaabad4995

      Oh goodness, I hear you Helen. I always think that sewing machines should be designed like the big kitchen mixers, where you can lift the top bit up on a hinge. Then we could all get at the screws easily. In the meantime however…. Could you see if you can get one of the little screwdrivers (the round or triangle ones, depending on your machine)? The other thing you could try (with Christmas approaching) is get one of those little packs of screwdrivers that come in Christmas crackers. Not perfect, but may help. And at least you’ll get to wear a silly hat in the process 😂 My husband has also said there are such things as right angled screwdrivers (and evidently he has one…who knew?!). As we are close to halloween it seems a good time to confess I have pieced and quilted a quilt, sewn myself a shirt and a curtain for my door all with the same needle my new machine came with 🫣 I promise I will change it tomorrow 😂

      😂Well, I’m glad that’s all out in the open 😂 Whilst you’re changing your needle, you might want to be checking out my video on the different needle sizes too as I suspect that’ll save you from further potential confessions in this spooky season 👻😁 Thank you for watching and so glad my videos are helping you 🥰 Kim x

    ?? Isn't tension more appropriate to adjust for thicker fabric?

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim Месяц назад

      Hi Linda, no, the advice from the sewing machine engineers is to leave the tension well alone and just adjust your stitch length (and needle size) for thicker fabrics. Modern machines will cope with all manner of thicknesses as long as the stitch length is changed. The only time I would alter the tension is when doing free motion. That advice may change for older machines or potentially more advanced sewers depending on machine and project, but otherwise you set the tension at its default and leave it there.

    Thanks! I wondered why I had this problem. Good illustration! Let me ask you why when I am stitching along with a great stitch length, then a small to a larger loop on the bottom stitch. I am stitching straps for a purse through batting and 2 layers of fabric. Any ideas? Thanks Marcia

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim Месяц назад

      Great question Marcia. That sometime happens if you have LOADS of thickness, but it doesn't sound like you have that. It's likely to be one of these three things. Try each in turn on a test piece in the same thickness as your bag handle: 1) re-load your bobbin, then 2) re-thread the top thread, then 3) change your needle to a top stitch 90/14. My instinct says it's the needle, but it's worth trying the other two as well. Let me know how you get on. Kim 😊

    I was curious how hand piecing is done, but I don’t understand why you made a pencil line on both pieces of fabric, when you only need to see the line on one piece to sew it.

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim Месяц назад

      Great question! It’s so you can sew a consistent straight quarter inch seam on the underside too. It’s very easy for the top fabric to look perfect and the bottom fabric to end up a wobbly mess without a line to guide you/your needle. Hope that helps 😊

    I have several in a kit. They are made of paper. No top. Any clue?

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim Месяц назад

      Hmmm, are they little spools?

    • @ChocolateApricots
      @ChocolateApricots Месяц назад

      Elongated paper spools, perhaps. I clipped and pulled in a random way and got a string started. This was in a kit sent by a charity. I was trying to sew a button with matching thread. It should be so hard.

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim Месяц назад

      So sorry I missed your reply 😔 OK, I know the spools you mean. Generally the thread isn’t good quality and I’d throw it away. A good test is to get a length of the thread and wrap it a couple of times over your middle fingers on both hands, with a few inches in between. Then pull to break it. Poor quality thread breaks easily, good quality polyester thread will hurt your fingers before it breaks, and good quality cotton thread will need a good effort to break it. That aside, these spools are a bit of a nightmare to untangle when they get themselves into a knot; I think it’s to do with the way they are spun onto the ‘spool’. I’m not sure that necessarily helps you though? I’d recommend going out to buy a Gutermann polyester thread for your button. Kim x
