I'm typically OCD with symmetry, but I'm OK with the emblem breaking convention. It's fresh, unique, outside-the-box. That's why it's "For the Bold!" :)
why is everyone always complaining most of the people doesn't even know how to use a spray can proper. I think your work is great keep it up man. (also most of the people doesn't have the balls or the design skills to build a real cafe racer)
Since following you i found me a 79 cx500 and i am turning it into a brat/cafe as well. Im in the states. I love watching your videos and follow almost step by step along with your build. Im prepping my tank as im typing to do a red strip similar to yours with a grey mettalic paint. Should look great. Keep posting, i love your stuff
Quick Question for you Sir! For your paint guns, did you use two different guns with different nozzles? If so, what size nozzles did you use for the primer and red paint? Was your primer at the 50:50 primer/thinner ratio? As well did you change your ratio for the red coat? What kind of paint did you use for the red, was it mixed with paint thinner as well? Thank you for your help!
You are making the absolute most with what you have and you are doing awesome. Keep up the good work and get yourself another bike. I am getting used to watching these videos :)
I would put a honda 'wing' decal under both HONDA logos on each side of the tank. But it will do more than fine without. And I am really loving this series. And even though the video's can get 'slow' it gives a good representation of the real time proces and I love that.
Thanks for the suggestion. And happy you're enjoying the builds, I was hoping that it brings over the real side of building. A lot of videos out there make a weeks work look like 2 hours, especially when it's not your full time job.
These videos are great. I'm about to buy a compressor for painting on my GL500 build. I kept trying to see the CFM output on yours, but couldn't quite make it out. I know I'd need the sprayer to match, but I'm wondering what the CFM on yours is an if it works for you? Thanks!
Any white bleed under the tape onto the red? If so (although it looks great) when you mask off give a coat on the edge of the tape of the covered up areas colour. That way any bleed you get is null and void as its the right colour. Then go over with your intended colour and when you peel your tape you've a perfect crisp line. Not always an issue but a little tip I was taught by a local body shop.
No bleed luckily, but that tape was horrible and left residue on the red. But good idea, I've seen it done with painting walls before but to be honest I never thought of that with this.
I have found that with masking it is worth paying a bit extra for the professional fine-lining tape to edge the design and fill up with the cheap stuff.
Trying to do a double take, but with the spraying part being fast forwarded it looks like you had the gun fan spraying horizontal. You were also moving your spray pattern the same way which gives lines. Put my mind at ease and tell me you did a 50/50 overlap pattern. The primer on camera looked like tiger striping
Curious about your method and order of operations. First, wouldn't it be easier to do the red over the white? Conventional thinking always talks about how hard it is to paint over red, that it's tough to cover with white and you'll always ghosting/bleed through. Also, did you not scuff up the gloss on the red before laying on the white? Will you have reliable adhesion?
Could you give some more details on the cellulose paints please? Where are they from (I'm struggling to get the colour I need); Ref number for the primer, thinners and paint? Thanks in anticipation Dave
Colours are hard to find unless you have a RAL colour or a vehicle colour name. But any paint supplier will mix you the colour. Try paints4u.com The primer is just straight U-POL p.88, any supplier will know what that is, and the thinner is just standard thinners for the paints, nothing special, but paint shop will be able to advise on what goes best with what paint they supply.
@@forthebold Do you also use epoxy or other types of paint? I've read cellulose is banned for most applications, save industrial or vintage vehicle applications.
Hi (From Montreal Canada), quick question. First off let me say great videos. I kinda wish you explained things a bit more but that's ok, I'm figuring out as I go along (replacing fork seals right now - 1980 cm400t honda). When peices get powder coated, do they come back all "shiny and new"? In other words do they need to be painted? Thanks keep posting and I'll keep watching.
now feel with youre finger on top of your other bike and feel how smooth he is ;-) but besides that i would have put a little black outline between the red and white, it would be so much nicer
Personally I think to bring black into the tank would have been too much intrusion, especially as black is such a dark tone against red, I'm happy with the way the tank looks now.
Love the videos. Love seeing it come together and I was just curious as to where you learned to do a lot of this stuff? A lot of the dissembling and assembling? Keep up the great work
For The Bold - dreegez Oh sweet. I was also wondering if you had any tips for starting to build bikes? I've wanted to build a Cafe Racer for awhile but utterly lack the long term experience when it comes to motorcycles, so if you could give me a few pointers that would be awesome!
Hi, keep up the good work....quick unrelated question, do you know what you've got on your workshop floor? I just painted my garage floor and it's no way near tough enough to handle side stands, warm tyres etc. Bloody nightmare actually but your floor looks like it's pretty tough?
Love the paint job on the the tank, but I have one question. Wouldn't it be better to finish the other bike and have it working, then work in the new bike? I've started watching your channel with the first bike and would love to see it done.
Thanks. The parts I needed for the other bike took a total of 2 months to be sourced so whilst I was waiting I thought I'd best do the other one. It'll be finished soon.
Wow! That's a long wait! I apologize, didn't know you was stuck in (Waiting for parts town!) Haha. Very much looking forward to seeing both bikes done! I enjoy watching your channel, keep up the good work!
Ha, no need to apologize, I'm not sure if I've mentioned it in my videos. The intake pipes took an age to find the right ones and then the POR 15 was out of stock in most places, a high demand for it I think.
Lovin your work. I noticed you use a Richmond compressor. I'm thinking of getting a compressor but not sure what's best. The Richmond PAC-96-50 Air Compressor one looks good and not too expensive on Amazon at 125 pounds. Is this the model you use? Is it a good all rounder? I want it for spray painting and maybe soda/sand blasting. Any advice?
The one I have is a 50litre, but it's very small, you'll have to use an LVLP spray gun if you wanted to spray, it does run out fairly quickly before it has to re-fill but still enough to spray a tank.
MATE PLEASE HELP ME . i have been trying to do my own 3 stage paint on my tank . but the paint bleeds through the tape and the lines are fuzzie . do you remove the tape when the paint is still wet ? im using spray cans and i think the ones im using have pretty thick paint . i saw on your gs you used halfords paint . would you recommend ? any help would be very useful . thanks
Since that very first video I'm no longer using rattle cans, unfortunately it doesn't withstand any fuel spillages etc, I now use cellulose paints, and I find self adhesive vinyl is the best to mask.
Maaaaate that tank is looking so sweet! When I get round to my build i think i will go white with yellow stripe down the upper part of the tank. I asked this in another vid but if you were to keep the tank bare metal how would you go about it? Cheers loving this channel!
Thank you. Sorry, you just reminded me now, I saw your comment come in and I was going to reply but it slipped my mind. You could try with a clear lacquer. It's how I would go about it but I couldn't with this tank as it a few dents and filler.
It's no worries. It's easy when they all come in on a bulk when I put a video up, it's when I see them come in on my mobile when I'm out I sometimes miss them. Thanks for watching the vids :)
I have done 2 tanks so far in bare metal. I have use spray can clear lacquer to cover them( 3-4 coats) and after few weeks you can start noticing surface rust under the paint. Might be from the moisture and my spray can paint job. I just sand down the tank every few months, make it shiny again and respray it. I have heard that clear epoxy paint works better to keep the rust from forming, so i might try the next time around.
I've used standard cellulose paint for automotives. I haven't thought about a clear coat yet, it's not needed with this paint as it's the same glossy finish as you'd get on a car, but you're right, for that deep gloss a clear coat would be of benefit.
Ha, I've been told I'm too laid back sometimes. I think in my line of work with graphics it's all down to what individuals think look good. I've accepted that not everyone will like what I do. You never know, I may have an outburst one day ;)
Only dust if you use cellulose paints, if even that, but it comes off with a blow from the compressor if you do find anything. The compressor for example has paint dust but comes off if you swipe your finger over it.
You don't have to with cellulose paints. You can do if you want that extra deep shine but with these paints they're the same finish as you find on cars etc.

Hi, loving your channel. Have now watched all of your content in the last couple of weeks. I'm doing my own project on a 1989 CG125 I got for free using your videos for inspiration. One quick question with regards to painting the tank. How much of each paint and thinner is needed to do the tank. Is 250ml enough, 500ml, or more? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!!
Great to hear you're a fan of the channel. For 1 tank I would say that a 250mm pot of each paint and thinner would do well as you use a 50/50 mix for the base then 40/50 for the top coat.
Hi mate, yep agree with other comments, the Honda badge looks really bad, red line the length of the Honda be better, sorry, your doing a great job much better than I could do
I think one of the biggest if not the biggest problem of the CX 500, Is the tubes on the back, meaning the way the shape of the frame under de back of the sit. I had the same problem with my build, since the frame is quite similar in the back (www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_cb400a_t%2078.htm) and I just took to cuting away and put new tubes, it looks great now, if you want I could send you some pictures over mail since I just finish it today. Truly it makes all the diference in the world.
Do you know that's the part I like about the CX, the way the tubes curve around. I've seen some mods where the tubes are straight but loses the soul of the CX. But what I didn't line was the way the shock mounts were higher than the rear frame
Thats the problem with that cvurve, that you get a higher and lower position with your seat, and that look is not the best I think, you could add some metal structure to it and cover it with the seat so its straight, I have seen some bikes that have that and it works really good.
Exactly, the solution is to get that seat straight. Hopefully you'll like what I've done to the frame when I unveil it. There are a few sneak photos on my Instagram account.
Hi there . nice slection of combination Red & White. here something I would like to sujest. Do white colour on fuel tank cap. and don't past now monogram of HONDA . At last on fuel tank write in red section with white paint (BOLD ) and in the white section with Red paint (INDUSTRY ) {I don't know what exactly the name is but I think u get it what IAM trying to say . something same I plan with my fuel tank with the colour combination of BLACK & WHITE and that same design . I don't know how can I send u the image of it other wise I will show u .
I'm always uncertain of how much to put into the videos as I'm conscious the time goes up. But you're right, I should have added those essential parts in also.
Mate can you do me a huge favor? Can tou take a picture of the oil dipstick of the CX 500 next to a measuring tape and send it to me? Mine bike only came with an after market one and does Not have the minimum and Max level for the bike You would be a life saver men 🙏🏼
Very nice colors!! It's gonna look great with the frame! I admit I had a little orgasm when I saw a thin blue stripe when you removed the tape.. Blue & red stripes on a white tank are my thing... can't help it haha
Thanks. I was kinda thinking it looked good as I was taking it off, I might save that colour scheme for a BMW or like that Martini themed Harley cafe racer that's floating around on the net.
For The Bold - dreegez I didn't know that was a thing... Very cool. I love your videos man, they've caused me to go for a build myself. Keep up the good work.
Don't worry, the engine is fine, no overspray to worry about from cellulose paint. Just a bit of dust that blows away with the compressor if any. If I was working with 2K paints it would be a whole different story.
No not boring. These videos are exactly what I need. It’s like being in the garage with someone who knows what they are doing! Perfect

I use a 1.3mm nozzle on an lvlp gun. Primer was 50:50. Base colour coats were 50:50 then 70:30 top coat. Colour paints are cellulose paints.
For The Bold so a 1.3mm for both? Was it out of the same gun? Thank you for answering so quickly!
Both were 1.3 but the primer gun isn’t a good gun so I binned it
totally dig how you can do quality one off bike production in the small garage. quality results mate
I was just thinking right before I saw this comment how I envy American garages, they always seem so huge in comparison to this one.

It's great to see the bikes coming together! :-) Also fun to see that you're choosing quite the same colours I've used :-P
Slowly progressing now. Have I, great minds ;)
I'll share some pictures soon. Had a major setback with the electronics... Got to start over again.
Amazing, keep at it, I hate electrics.

gd job on the tank bud still looking forward on see it finshed and progress on the bike loving it
Thanks. Thinking today I might add a second thin stripe on it also.
yah one silm strip would make it stand out a bit more it would look better, how about the old logo with the wing or would that be a bit to much
Would be nice but I'd have to strip and fill the tank again where the badge is.
You should invest in a hand held sandblasting gun for cleaning crevices. You can also use baking soda them with to remove paint and cleaning dirt/oil.

For me the coverage is good so you don’t see the red. Also adhesion is fine I find with that finish without the need to go over it with 800 grit.

No, no lacquer needed with cellulose paints if you don't want it. So far it's got a nice gloss finish
I've sanded my primer with 1200 grid wet, this should give a cleaner finish :D
Sounds good, I've done that in the past but this cellulose paint goes on thick enough if you want it too. So in this case I only opted for 400,

Thanks :)
nice work! in my opinion would be nice and would esthetically work to spray a 5mm black stripe between the red and the white
Not a bad idea. Thanks
Thank you, and sounds interesting.
For The Bold - dreegez that's it :( . Ok
One tip... Grease and wax remover immedialty before each spray.
Thanks, yup, in hand and a tack rag also.
You got it :)
I'm always uncertain of how much to put into the videos as I'm conscious the time goes up. But you're right, I should have added those essential parts in also.
Mate can you do me a huge favor? Can tou take a picture of the oil dipstick of the CX 500 next to a measuring tape and send it to me?
Mine bike only came with an after market one and does Not have the minimum and Max level for the bike
You would be a life saver men 🙏🏼
Yeah sure thing, I'll do it for you in a few mins, private message me your email address.
For The Bold - dreegez I have sent you an message on Instagram if you can send it there Please
Hey, I haven't had an instagram message yet, just incase it didn't work.
Send it to this mail then:

nice cayman :D
Thank you. Might be in Monday's video actually.
Definitely like that sportster indeed! I also have original Honda colored stripes on my 86' XL600LM, I think I bought it because of these
Hope your getting rid of those stupid ugly dents uve stuck in your gs tank, looks like someone has kicked them they are so uneven
Nope, keeping them I'm afraid.
Red door handle!
Everyone should have one.
i cant believe that little compressor runs your spray gun
I have to use an LVLP gun (Low volume low pressure) with it to work with a 50L compressor.
For The Bold - dreegez I didn't know that was a thing... Very cool. I love your videos man, they've caused me to go for a build myself. Keep up the good work.
Nice job
Thank you.
You sprayed your knob
Damn right, it's the only way to go.
Really wish you lived over the pond. I'd pay you to help build my bike
I'd love to live over there, but I think it's near impossible for a visa
Not impossible. Just an incredibly long process
I'm now going to convert my racer into a commuter, just to piss these people off.
+M H please do it. I think there's a market out there for it.
white on bike is really hard to make work, but that kind of does.. thank god you use real paint gun and not some rattle can.. ;)
Thank you. Yeah the Suzuki was with a rattle can and I regret that now
heyyy
HEy
you can't be serious with this video! Painting in the open garage? The black engine in the Background can be painted again now....
Don't worry, the engine is fine, no overspray to worry about from cellulose paint. Just a bit of dust that blows away with the compressor if any. If I was working with 2K paints it would be a whole different story.
