  • Welcome back to the Channel everyone! If you're new here I would appreciate it if you hit the like button and subscribe if you enjoy the content. Now that we have that out of the way... I started building a 1982 CB750sc Nighthawk 4-5 years ago and it kind of fell by the wayside. At the beginning of 2020 I found myself with much more free time(Like most people). I finished the bike up and got it running but I never finished painting the tank! So I figured this would be a great opportunity to share with you all how I did an affordable paint job at home using only spray cans. Hope you guys enjoy. If i missed something feel free to leave a comment and I’d love to help you out if I can!

    I’m a firm believer that you can do a good job with a rattle can if you follow the correct process. I sometimes do all the primer, primer filler and basecoat by can and the lacquer from a spray gun, it reduces the pain of having to clean a spray gun out that’s for sure!

    • @marcush4741
      @marcush4741 2 года назад

      Theres definitely a learning curve.
      Biggest tip is to be patient. Two or three thin coats are better than a thick coat, especially if you dont have experience with cans.
      Also, make sure you are patient with time between coats. Make sure you're watching temperature and humidity. Dont test by touching. Figure youre dry by KNOWING temp and humidity, calculating dry time, and giving it a few extra minutes.
      And lastly, be patient with when you do it. If you're going to do it outside, dont do it your first day available. Make sure the weather report is good, and that the temp and humidity are in range.
      I got my painting skills by practicing on walmart special ammo cans. They're like $10, and you can practice anything from sanding to stripping to painting techniques. It also really helps get an idea for a paint job fleshed out before you decide to follow through.

    YOur HF polisher can be upgraded easy with higher quality grease, and get rid of 6.5" pads. Use a 5" backing plate and pads. This allows more power to actually hit the padsurface. Also a 3" polisher and pads do very well. Your finish came out very nice. and I realize you may have learned this all since its been a year since posting.

    • @jamesofalltradesny
      @jamesofalltradesny  2 года назад +3

      Thanks! Duplicolor makes a matching 1k canned clear that can be sprayed with a normal paint rated respirator. Just be careful as the fuel resistance will not be as good as a 2k product.

    One question I have if anyone here can recommend, I think some of the clear coat products recommend waiting a long time (week or so) before any sanding etc. How long did you wait after using that 2K toxic clear coat before doing the compound and finish work?
    Cheers!

    • @jamesofalltradesny
      @jamesofalltradesny  6 месяцев назад +1

      I believe I waited 2-3 days. I think 2 days would be long enough. The clear is catalyzed so it dries relatively quickly.

    I've got 2 tanks to paint and it'll be my first time. I'm confused though, when you sanded the clear the final time before the compound and polish, didn't that remove all the clear?

    • @jamesofalltradesny
      @jamesofalltradesny  2 года назад +6

      No, wet sanding with a high grit between 1500-3000 will knock down the texture in the clear. If you start seeing color come off in the water you went to far. That’s why it’s important to put several coats of clear on so you have something to work with!

    Do have to sand between the final color coat and clear? Also if you do sand the blushing off before clear do you only sand the parts that are blushing or do the whole tank.

    • @jamesofalltradesny
      @jamesofalltradesny  Год назад

      I personally sanded the whole thing to reduce orange peel/get a constant surface finish and promote adhesion of the clear coat. I suppose you could just do the blushed areas but for the amount of time it takes I would just do the whole thing.

    • @jamesofalltradesny

      You don’t have to push hard to sand, but if that part is really flexible you could attach some sort of backer foam/double sided tape. If you’re worried about removing old paint on plastic I’ve seen people use brake fluid all though I’ve never tried it.

    I want to make my bike matte black..
    I will do like this -
    1.Sanding
    2.Surfacer
    3.Sanding
    4.Black coat matte
    5.Then directly 2k coating.
    I saw after my step 4 you sanded again..is it necessary?
    And after 2k u used sanding again and then polished.. Why?😅
    A lot of question.. Hope you will explain all

    • @jamesofalltradesny
      @jamesofalltradesny  2 года назад +1

      I sanded between every coat with varying grits of sandpaper, self etch primer and surfaces was sanded with 600 to flatten, base coat(color) was wet sanded with 1000 grit to promote adhesion of the 2k clear. Clear coat was sanded with 1500, 2000 and than compound/polished. Sanding the clear removes orange peel. Oh and the matte black was used as a guide coat to make sure the dents were filled in.

    Yikes.... you put the Spot Putty directly on the Bondo? that's never going to stay for long, Spot Putty goes on after the first coat of primer because the chemicals in the spot putty will react with the Bondo and crack it and pull it away from the bare metal, it even says so on the package..... I've been a paint and body guy for over 30 years and one of the first thing they teach you in school in school is that you NEVER put Spot Putty directly on Bondo because it will react with the Bondo , always put a layer or 2 of primer between them. Also just an Tech Tip.... stop paying $12-$15 for an 11 oz bottle of Prep-Sol, 90% or higher Rubbing Alcohol does a better job as a degreaser than Prep-Sol does and it's a 1/10th of the cost, you can get a 32 oz of Rubbing Alcohol at Wal-Mart for $2.

      Make sure you shake the cans really well so the two parts mix and you get a consistent spray and do light coats. At an absolute minimum a respirator (with the right filter) and paint suit. 2k is some nasty stuff...

    Aircraft paint remover shoulda worked. I remember working on some Generals “crypt” from way back in the day in Austin Texas and me n my brother were using that stuff to get all the old paint off so we could restore it and it’s some pretty good stuff! 💯 And this is kinda fkd up but we actually got into a fist fight at work that day and while we were throwing each other around, we knocked over our work bench along with everything on it including the aircraft remover and it got all over our bodies. Talk about burning!! 😬 OUCH!!! I still have scars on my side, my stomach and my arms from that shit! Good times 😅😬
