Last month I ran 450 miles through England and Wales along the coastline and used the Asic Trabuco Max 2. Combination of trails, roads and even beaches. It was absolutely fantastic. I am a Novablast 3 fan, so tried this out and BOOM, it nailed it.
Been taking a break from cycling and recently got back into running after being inspired by your videos /channel. Great video /review and safe running out there!
I have the TM2 and oh my god what an absolutely brilliant trail shoe! Soooooo comfortable, yes you're probably not gonna smash any records in them but if you need something that will just eat up those miles then look no further 👌🏻
I've put over 360 miles in 2 pairs TBM2. Absolutely agree with Kofuzi that they're designed for mild to moderate terrain. The sidewalls provide some stable balance but it's still a tall stack monster truck. The more significant (IMO) reason for utilizing the shoe in mild to moderate terrain is that the FFBlast+ midsole comes alive when you're in rhythm with a steady cadence. I was suprised how easily I could run a quicker tempo pace or fly on downhills.
Loved a lot about these shoes but the tall stack was just too unstable for me. I agree 100% with Asics trail shoes being seriously underrated. The Fuji lite 2 was one of my favorite shoes to date, I can't wait for the Fuji Lite 4 with foam and outsole updates! Please please please get us a review on that one! Your content is just plain next level production!
I agree 100% with this review! Also how breathable and nicely the upper fits is just 👌 doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing a big shoe like kofuzi said. Love, love this shoe.
Love mine for zone 2 trail miles! Took a couple runs to break in enough for lockdown but after that my feet don't even feel like I ran. Long term I feel like the inside lining of upper may become an issue in the durability department but we shall see. Actually find them quite stable for a high stack. Very wide base. Far more stability and comfort than my Endorphin Edge that I use for racing.
Identical experience for me, it took about 30k to get comfortable in them, and now they are amazing. I was initially very concerned as so many reviewers had mentioned the perfect fit right out of the box and I really couldn't get a good feel on my first run at all. Now I'm annoyed when I'm having a road day because I don't get to wear them. The outsole grip is amazing and the lugs are far enough apart that I've never had debris clog them up. As grippy as the vibram on SG5's!
I finished first over all in a Utah 50 mile trail race wearing this shoe. I had only worn them once and they felt great. I like how stiff the shoe initially was around the rocker, but I don’t expect that or the stack height to last as the shoe wears in. IMO they are great for long races 50-100+ miles, but are best worn on race day without breaking in at all!
I've been running trails in the Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra but find them a bit to harsh on my legs post 20 miles or so, Just picked up these Trabuco Max 2s from the Asics Outlet £100 ($125), looking forward to a more comfortable experience for long distance, I'll keep the Adidas for faster shorter efforts. Thanks for the great review and advice.
Great review, Mike. The shoes look great, a bit too much stack and weight for what I like on the trails, however. Not sure why Asics couldn't put the FF Blast+ foam in the Trabuco 11. Oh well, maybe it will be in the Trabuco 12.
Finally!!!! The shoe review from you I’ve been waiting for. I just got mine for Father’s Day, happy Father’s Day btw, and I can’t wait until Wednesday to try them out.
I just tried these on at my local running store and they have a very similar fit and shape to the new Gel Kayano 30. These will probably replace my Salomon Speedcross 6's as my trail runners/hiking shoes. Thanks for the excellent review and video!
Just used these on a trail 50k in Oregon. I am 300+ lbs, so I appreciate the thick foam in most situations. They kept my legs fresh in my training runs. One major problem I ran into was on narrow single track where my feet couldn't stay flat on the ground. The foam flexes a lot in that situation causing my feet/ankles to take a pretty bad beating. It may be better for lighter people.
Hey Kofuzi. Just discovered your channel. Great stuff. Quick question. Need a new cushioned trail shoe for 102km trail event here in NZ. I’m 59, 92kilos and a bit of a plodder. Will be out for approx 17 hours. Leg strength a challenge. TM2 or the Hoka Mafate?

Thanks for the review. At 52yo got into running about 5 months ago. Strapped Nimbus 24s to my feet LOVED them. Wholeheartedly agree the mid-sole was a cracker. Ate up the 700km I put on them. Foolishly then moved to Hoka Cliftons which I now enjoy but man did I have to run in them a bunch to enjoy the ride. I have the first version of Trabuco Max. Honestly I don’t dare to run off road with them, me having a pretty unstable ankle. However, they were excellent for long hikes up and down difficult terrain. They were great as road running shoes. Good cushioning, rocker design and great rebound. The road traction was exceptional. I guess the lugs will wear out quickly if you use them as road running shoes.
Mike, great review once again. However, I have an issue. You convinced me to buy so many shoes that made my wife nagging a lot as now I have a greater collection than her. So I want your advise on how to tackle this issue. LoL
Which one is more stable and have more traction? Trabuco Max 2 or the Mafate? They are both at about 110-120$ at some local shop. I'll use them mainly for hiking (and occasional running). Thanks and great video btw!
I'm looking for a max plodder to replace my Stinsons, I think this is my choice over the NB More Trail. Based on reviews and specs. I just wish it was available in lighter colors; black and navy are so much heavier than white, tan, or fluorescent colors! I think black adds 200gm to the weight (in my head...)
Most of us use trail shoes either as hybrids (miles each way on road, to run miles in the forest) or as daily trainers for the winter. For this purpose, most of the traditional trail running shoes are way too extreme (big-heavy lugs, super-firm midsole) and have no road manners. Have you considered doing a hybrid compilation? Topo UV3 and MR3 would be perfect, if they did not suck up water like a sponge, so looking further afield. Looks like the Hoka Challenger and the Asics Trabuco Max 2 may be good alternatives. What do you think?
Hehe I like that the Trabuco Max II is also well ventilated compared to how it looked. Especially when you looked at the covered/rubberized toe caps and the thick meshed upper. I also use this for asphalt and they are very sticky. What a compound. 😅😅😅
I think the Max is too much stack for me. But does anyone have any info on the Gel-Trabuco 11? I love Asics fit, and need some trail shoes. But can't find any reviews on Trabuco 11
I run the gT11gtx and love them!Great shoe, very solid lockdown and stability on rough terrain, up or down hills. The gortex has done its job thus far but can’t say I’ve been in hard rain with them yet. I bought these for trails, snow/ice, and gravel. The rock plate in the 11 helps with those big stones, and uneven sharp ice (I’m hoping). I also run in the Novablast 3 TR which has surprisingly good grip for some off-roading but nothing like the ascics grip on the Trabuco’s. The NB3TR’s are also a little less stable for hardcore trail running, I feel much more sure of my feet in the Trabuco 11. Cheers.
If you have to choose between these and the Mafate Speed4? I'm looking for a cushion trail shoes for long distances / everyday training / low speed but not too heavy / stable / responsive / versatile (yes i need a miracle lol). Thanks for your work!
I'm between buying this one .. the max 3 in fact or the New Balance Fresh Foam More Trail V3 ... i am heavy, i have flat feet & for the moment i enjoy my HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5 but i feel that i need more cushioning so which one should i use ???... i run usually in the forest on trails and hill side trails. I aspect some suggestions ... thank you in advance !
I have the old one, just purchased max 2 , not as cushion as I wanted to be, I think they have to cut the outsole into half from middle just like Brooks Cascadia 17, then the midsole would spread more !
It's a beast in winter; did a trail marathon through snow, ice, mud, and scree in March here in Colorado, and this thing did not let me down. Love this shoe.
Hi 😊. In your opinion, does this shoe works and comfortable too for daily use (walking on pavement, work, etc)? And how about the outsole? Do you think it's durable enough?
@@kofuzi Yeah👍🏻. But hmm, since the midsole is quite comfortable, maybe it suits for pavement too (not for running, maybe just for daily walk). Maybe...
I run in the Novablast 3TR and the gel-Trabuco 11 GTX which has the same grip as the max and will tell you this grip is lights out better for trails. The 11 has the rock plate which helps on gravel/stones and is to me more stable for hard trail running whereas the NB3TR is just a little more squishy and IMO great for wet pavement or light trails. If I ran long distance on trails the max might have been my choice but I really needed a GTX in my lineup for 10-15 mile runs so stuck with the 11. Cheers.
I just purchased a pair, but with the intent of using them for a long thru hike - walking - (Camino de Santiago or St James Way, in Spain), which is neither ran nor technical. The instability was a factor I accepted but conscious that their stand out feature (max cushion and comfort) is their prime mission.
@@awake.at5am i returned them due to feeling narrow and firm. Didn’t hike, couldn’t risk the discomfort, so couldn’t test stability. Speedgoat 5 definitely felt better overall, fit and comfortable, also more grounded. Tried the NB More v3 trail recently in a store, they felt like the high-stack cousin to the Speedgoat and in my opinion, were hands down better than the Trabuco Max 2. The Asics is not as soft as advertised, though to be fair not a “rock” either.
@@awake.at5am I find them horrible to walk in. But I feel the same about all modern rockered running shoes. For me, they are _great_ to run in, at moderate pace with a consciously quick cadence and short stride. But only if I lace them with a runner's lock, in order to secure my foot a bit towards the rear of that foam mattress, such that the ball of my foot aligns best with the rocker of the shoe (probably individual for specific footshapes. But shoes with a pronounced rocker, are very sensitive to exact fore-aft foot placement). They also work OK'ish for walking on steep and steeper trails. On pavement, OTOH, walking in them feels like walking around with a football attached to the sole of each foot. I can't imagine how any shoe with such a running specific rocker, can be anything but weird and unstable to walk in, on flatter and/or smoother ground. They are very specifically designed to augment a certain running stride. But I suppose everyone is different.
My one foot (right) goes very “inside” on sole. Feels like shoe trying to slip from my foot. Why this is happening? Frist time have this problem with this trabuco. Any suggestions of solutions?
@@kofuzi Thats good to hear! do you think the midsole would be too squishy for some outdoor conditioning work? Stuff like farmer's carries, sled drags, etc?
Would you recommend this for someone who has flat feet? I’m 286 lbs, and is looking for a pair of shoes that I can use for long distance walking. I am planning to walk 18-24 kms daily on the Camino de Santiago. This seems to be perfect for me but wanted to know based on your experience. The Camino parts that I’m walking would be a mix of road and trail. Thank you for posting this video!
While everyone is different, I would not expect a shoe with a pronounced rocker designed to augment a running gait, designed for a light-to-medium weight runner, to be a good long distance walking shoe for a heavier guy. Not sure what is available to you locally, but the European alpine brands, have literally catalogues of low-top, lighter weight shoes designed for walking use on trails of varying technical difficulty. Many designed with the added weight of a pack in mind. Personally, if not carrying anything, I don't mind walking in rather minimalistic "running" shoes. But more protected walking specific shoes, are likely better if you plan on walking that much daily. For one, you'll wear them IN. After which they'll fit like gloves for 2000+ miles, much longer than running shoes, which you pretty much start wearing OUT the moment you put them on.
@@paulnorman8274 yes, I think so too. Thankfully after searching and trying out so many models, I found the Asics Kayano 29 and it’s been great so far. I think ultimately, I realized that i needed shoes with stability as I have a flat feet plus I am heavy too. The kayano 29 has been my daily shoe for the past month and I just ordered the 30s! :)
Watching the video now, I am from Europe and have Gel Trabuco 10, 11 GTX and the Novablast 3 TR. And for whatever reason, I had to give away my Trabuco Max 2. It wasn't soft, it felt 0,5 sizes too small in my usual ASICS size, and it's a pity. I didn't get along with the shape of the rocker at all. Still, can't quite explain it. The guy I have it loves it, too. Very weird. For me it was a dud. 🤔😑
So really no instability noticed from this stack? It's a beautiful shoe but just seems the high stacks are too unstable for trails. I use the Novablast 3 TR and it's certainly a solid buy...It's just that the instability is very noticeable, even on novice trails. Trabuco Max 2 being even higher stack and also a dedicated trail shoe (unlike the NB3-TR), is concerning.
Stability is about more than just stack height. Trabuco 2 is wider. It's from the Hoka playbook of "wide slab of foam, with low'ish volume upper attached well inward of the foam's edges", ensuring you always stay entered on top of that foam. Hence don't roll off the edge. UNTIL you do, but that takes terrain which manages to angle the bottom of the shoe quite severely. It's a formula which works well for less technical trails at moderate speed. When things get technical, you don't want wide, since that severely limits the spots you can safely fit and place your feet. Also, when things get fast, you don't want wide, since faster results in a narrower track, more inline foot placement, and you start stumbling over your own calves trying to get those fat soles past each other.
I like the grip and the confort, but the sides are not stable enough and being such a tall shoe, you can sprain your ankle on a mid-technical Trail course. I sprained both my ankles 4 times already and I am not going anywhere near a technical Trail in this shoe. Just light, easy, not to steep and not too technical Trail, that's what I will use it for. And mud
They made the stack too high for me. Super unstable for anything but packed dirt. Loved the 1 just needed a better lock down. I’m ready for the moon shoe revolution to end
Have it love it! Run 10 miles on trail with it ups and downs, good, Ver comfy and stable for me. Even run 1 mile with it on Asfalt, not made for asfalt, but it did Ok! I plan to run a trail half marathon with it in November... But do you know if it is legal for half marathons?
I don't think World Athletics road marathon stack height rules apply to trail races, but I suppose you could email the race director for confirmation. But unless you're subject to pre-race equipment checks for the purpose of prize money, I wouldn't worry about it.
The Trabuco Max 2 is great for walking, and great if you have custom insoles. The toe box is roomy and nice, and the midfoot is kind of wide, so it is also great for flat feet. I really, really love this shoe! I have all kinds of foot problems, and this shoe really help to make walking less painful. Super easy to walk in as well, that forefoot rocker and the low drop absolutely help to get you in a good and effortless walking motion. It is possible to walk kind of speedy in them as well. I have tried running in these shoes. But I don't tolerate running very well, get injuries almost immediately, or actually immediately, in fact. I bought them as a more cushioned alternative to the Gel Trabuco 10 (which is a shoe that I love!), and I had running in mind. But my feet don't really want to run yet, not strong enough or I don't know. But luckily the Trabuco Max 2 is a fabulous walking shoe! I have tried them on gravel roads, asphalt and a narrow and very uneaven path with lots of roots. It works great for everything. So far, the Trabuco Max 2 and the Gel Trabuco 9 and 10 is the best walking shoes I have tried. Both are called Trabuco, but they are quite different. They are both great in their own way. But I would say Trabuco Max 2 is better for painful feet because of the good with and the super comfortable pain relieveing cushioning. Hopefully I will be able to run a little bit in them as well. But just by spelling the word running, I get knee injuries and shin splints before I even have time to get my shoes on (I am a total beginner, too old and too fat. But not that fat really, my BMI is just mildly overweight, but my feet think I'm the biggest of elephants and goes into emergency mode).
Hated them. Did a 14 miler in them. The forefoot lock down was unattainable making technical trails downright dangerous. The FFB is a joke. No bounce- EVA foam. There's no spring in that stuff compared to PEBA. The outsole is great. My least favorite trail shoe of all time.
Asics is building some serious shoes but they really need to lower stack height. Seriously half of their models completely deprive you from feeling anything. That is the receipe for injuries as soon as you remove the kickstand.
I found it impossible to buy ASICS running shoes in the US. I travelled from Australia to California, New York And Hawaii and found nothing worthwhile in any shoe store or outlet. It was quite frustrating.

I just wish it was available in lighter colors; black and navy are so much heavier than white, tan, or fluorescent colors! I think black adds 200gm to the weight (in my head...)
different colors weigh more?
@@kofuzi ...you know it's true...mentally...😁
Most of us use trail shoes either as hybrids (miles each way on road, to run miles in the forest) or as daily trainers for the winter. For this purpose, most of the traditional trail running shoes are way too extreme (big-heavy lugs, super-firm midsole) and have no road manners. Have you considered doing a hybrid compilation? Topo UV3 and MR3 would be perfect, if they did not suck up water like a sponge, so looking further afield. Looks like the Hoka Challenger and the Asics Trabuco Max 2 may be good alternatives. What do you think?
I almost never use my trail shoes as hybrid
Cheers.
@@pgfrmr Thank you! I will check out both the NB3TR. And ESPECIALLY the Trabuco 11
Will you review the fuji lite 4 please
Think shoes like this would be too much just for bad weather road running? Talking light snow, maybe ice…
If I did more trail running, this would be on my short list. The Fuji Lite is getting regular FF Blast, too.
a lot of exciting things happening
Thanks Ko! I’m curious to see how the TM2 could handle the snow come winter time 🥶 could be worth it up un MN
It's a beast in winter; did a trail marathon through snow, ice, mud, and scree in March here in Colorado, and this thing did not let me down. Love this shoe.
Do you think these would be a good winter running shoe? Looking for something on the roads in Canada when there's snow, slush or hard jagged ice.
yeah, but it's not goretex or weatherized
Is this shoes good for winter commuting?
Could be. Depends on whether you’d need waterproofing and how slick things get
asic trabuco max 2 or hoka mafate speed 4 is the best?
Hi 😊. In your opinion, does this shoe works and comfortable too for daily use (walking on pavement, work, etc)?
And how about the outsole? Do you think it's durable enough?
It’s a trail shoe
@@kofuzi Yeah👍🏻.
But hmm, since the midsole is quite comfortable, maybe it suits for pavement too (not for running, maybe just for daily walk).
Maybe...
The way you said "additional trail running shoes from asics" was it a hint 😂
I like to evaluate new experiences in terms of whether it makes me more or less likely to experiment further
I heard it as "please asics send me more shoes to test" 😉
Are you going to get the Fujispeed 2? Just ordered it but there is almost 0 info online about them.
I do not currently have plans to review that one
hi is there a difference between max 2 and Max 3 except some upper stuff? and 10€ in prince on the outlet
I'm afraid I have not tested the Trabuco Max 3
How do they compare to the ASICS Novablast 3 TRs? I don't do any technical trail runs, but enjoy the TRs when I'm running in the canyons.
Cheers.
I have the NVB TR and the TBM2 and raced in them. I wish that the NVB TR has the lugs of the TBM2 and the TBM2 has the squishiness of the NVB TR.
I'm hoping that's the direction that they take some of the other ASICS trail models 🤞
p.s. I have one REALLY bad ankle...is the shoe stable? I always worry about rolling an ankle...
Intresting shoe looks comfortable.
It is
I just purchased a pair, but with the intent of using them for a long thru hike - walking - (Camino de Santiago or St James Way, in Spain), which is neither ran nor technical. The instability was a factor I accepted but conscious that their stand out feature (max cushion and comfort) is their prime mission.
How's the hiking with the Max2? Unstable?
Could these be used for a part road/part gravel path 50 mile ultra?
yes
Amazing. Thanks for responding. Love your stuff @@kofuzi
My one foot (right) goes very “inside” on sole. Feels like shoe trying to slip from my foot. Why this is happening? Frist time have this problem with this trabuco. Any suggestions of solutions?
🔥🔥🔥
hi kofuzi, I'm wonder what is your current size shoe?
I wear a size 9. Why do you ask?
Is this shoe feasible for segments on pavement (~4 miles) on a race that is otherwise trails?
Yes. Very good road manners
How do these compare to New Balance Trail More? They are very similar shoes. Anyone have both? Thank you so much!
Had both and much prefer the Asics by far
@str8up50 Thank you for the reply! I am debating between the two.
@@str8up50 Are they stable for regular hiking?
@@awake.at5am yup
For hiking in forest does asics have any shoes?
I am unaware whether ASICS has shoes specifically designed for hiking but not trail running
How is this compared to trabuco 11 and the Fuji Lite? Would really love to hear your thoughts also 🙂
I did not try the Trabuco 11
Can I wear them as daily sneakers?
sure
Trail race soon?
there's a 50k I've been eying for July, but I'm not sure if my plans will be changing
Can I run abit of road and trail with this
Yes
Is it nice and wide?
yup. not a wide size, but it's roomy for a standard width shoe.
@@kofuzi thank you for your reply. It’s so nice to always get a reply from you. Appreciate it
Are they neutral or with support?
Neutral
GREAT shoe. Super comfortable except for the tongue that slides around on me some but doesn’t hurt the experience
glad to hear it's working for you!
Have you tried the Nimbus 25? More stack than NB3, but it’s not unstable. There’s a different density to the foam, it seems
@@kofuzi I’m speaking in the context of trail running. I wouldn’t take a nimbus on the trails to find out man lol.
And mud
At this point maybe consider an ankle strengthening routine ? I ran in a very technical environment in Montréal Canada and had no issues at all 🤷🏻♂️.
Why do people run with non wide toe shoes?
This is phrased as a question but it’s really just looking to pick a fight, I think
They made the stack too high for me. Super unstable for anything but packed dirt. Loved the 1 just needed a better lock down. I’m ready for the moon shoe revolution to end
They make this in a non max version
Not a fan of high stack shoes on trails, love asics though, might pick up the Fiji model.
❤
Have it love it! Run 10 miles on trail with it ups and downs, good, Ver comfy and stable for me. Even run 1 mile with it on Asfalt, not made for asfalt, but it did Ok!
I plan to run a trail half marathon with it in November... But do you know if it is legal for half marathons?
I don't think World Athletics road marathon stack height rules apply to trail races, but I suppose you could email the race director for confirmation.
But unless you're subject to pre-race equipment checks for the purpose of prize money, I wouldn't worry about it.
Only wish Asics' trail shoes weren't always black. New Balance's trail shoes have much more refreshing and bolder colorways.
I'm generally nervous whenever Asics gets a little frisky with the colors
Hope you have many happy miles in them!
Great Video - but too much shoe for me
…..heavy and you can’t feel the different surfaces …..
Hated them. Did a 14 miler in them. The forefoot lock down was unattainable making technical trails downright dangerous. The FFB is a joke. No bounce- EVA foam. There's no spring in that stuff compared to PEBA. The outsole is great. My least favorite trail shoe of all time.
can you tell me which shoes you've been running in instead?
Yo, what’s going on!!!
Yo Luis!
Yo !! What going on
Asics is building some serious shoes but they really need to lower stack height. Seriously half of their models completely deprive you from feeling anything. That is the receipe for injuries as soon as you remove the kickstand.
What ?! 🤦🏻♂️
I found it impossible to buy ASICS running shoes in the US. I travelled from Australia to California, New York And Hawaii and found nothing worthwhile in any shoe store or outlet. It was quite frustrating.
This is the first time I’ve heard this complaint
