This video is for those seeking to change their life or to move away from the city, feeling overwhelmed or stuck in the situation they are in. Maybe you simply wish to reimagine or romanticize your life into something new. I am unable to offer specific advice, since I am not a finance nor real estate expert. But even if I was, I think everyone’s situation is so unique that it is difficult to give examples that are applicable to everyone. Therefore, I wish to suggest a new way of looking at one’s own life - as a storybook full of chapters that are each meaningful part of your journey. Maybe you are not where you wish you were. As you wait for that time to come, there is so much to experience and learn. I wish to turn away from the idea that we need to be in a specific location (city, town, or country) to be happy or to lead the peaceful and meaningful life we yearn for. In my personal experience, the answer didn’t come from moving to a new place and leaving a chaotic and loud city. These changes, of course, were positives for me and helpful to my spirit that yearned for quietness and peace and slow living. However, this peace and slowness can be achieved in many walks of life. We can live environmentally conscious lives wherever we are. We can cultivate happiness wherever we are. Moving isn’t an option for many, be it for financial, health, and other practical reasons. You can bring aspects of what you love into your own life, be it in a city or town.
We spend so much time on social media admiring incredible lifestyles that are full of adventure and excitement - we must keep in mind that no matter where you go you often take your personal struggles with you. Your own life, right now, can be a dream come true. Not a perfect dream, maybe, but reality often works that way. I hope this video brings you comfort wherever in life you are, and that my personal story can help others who have struggled with sadness and depression. Life goes on, seasons change, and so will you. One day is different from the next, and if you stay hopeful and are not afraid to ask for help, things can get better and more manageable. Overtime, your life may change completely. Embrace your story and the many paths it takes you on, positive and challenging. Each chapter has something to teach if you wish to learn.
    Sending love to all,
    Paola

At the end of this video you can see some wonderfully inelegant moments while filming 😂
Also, at the beginning of this video you may be wondering where I am 🧐 I had some family friends allow me the honor of visiting their property, which has been passed down in their family for over 100 years! It is a very old cabin with an incredible amount of history attached to it. I was so excited to share some glimpses of it with you.

When I was young I had a profound life changing moment. I was watching a random little-known documentary (to this day I can’t remember the name of it). It took place in a foreign city with crime, pollution, hideous devastation, and war. But there was a minor character...a single mother...whom I will never forget. The camera followed her down a rat infested alley, trash and rubble lined both sides. The door to her home had been crudely painted turquoise. The camera followed her inside...and the transition between hell and heaven was stark. You see, her home was clean, decorated with little things with no true value, but placed just right. She had drawn beautiful pictures and placed them carefully on the walls. She had potted plants/weeds in discarded cans and put them on her window sill to block the chaos outside. Her home was relatively quiet, and what little she had was used to the best of her ability. We have control over the inside of our homes AND our hearts. If we capture those two places and make them the seedling of our future goal I think we would all be happier, more peaceful people.

Thank you for mentioning the ablebodied thing. I'm disabled and can't live the "cottagecore, gardening, self sustainable, cottage in the woods" life I dream of because of my disabilities. However I'm learning to find ways to live in ways that are doable for me but also enjoyable. I moved to a beautiful very rural state, but I live in a town where things are walking distance or a short drive. So I can enjoy nature and see beautiful mountains out my windows but also live near doctors and neighbors and stores. The next step is just asking others for help and give up on my idea of wanting to be fully self reliant. Thank you for this video and thank you for acknowledging being abled it really matters.

When they took my mother they also took alot of our valuables, ive had to live off canned sausages and canned tuna for a few months before i was able to reach out to my half siblings for help. this truly inspires me and helps keep me going, in times like these where my mental health is bad i find comfort in your story. may this chapter of my life be a story to tell my children.

I cried too but I think the beauty of this video ( and the person making the video) reminded me of how much of my life has been spent doing things that were a waste of time .....now that I am an old lady I realize that with a shorter view ahead many of these dreams I have will never materialize and that I SHOULD have tried harder to implement them when I was younger, healthier and stronger. I know now that I didn't have the self assurance or belief in myself to take the steps that I needed to fulfill some of my own needs. It makes me incredibly sad to feel this way but also it makes me so very happy to see that some people ( the Cottage Fairy among others) are taking the steps to live the lives that truly fulfill them .....even if the steps are slow they are nonetheless strong and purposeful and move them in the direction of a life well lived and one that will ultimately be one that will give them a sense of peace and satisfaction. My best advice to younger people is to take the steps YOU need to begin the journey ....life is a process and it takes time to find the right path but DON'T waste time ....just begin with one thing and keep going till you know in your heart that you are moving towards that place, purpose, joy and peace that you need and deserve!!!

I'm 63 years old. I grew up in Chicago, moved to a suburb and raised 3 children. Four years ago I moved to a cottage in the West of Ireland with my husband and youngest son, who was 14 at the time. It all started with a love for Irish traditional music, a 10 day trip to Ireland 22 years ago and clipping photos of Irish cottages from magazines and taping them to my suburban refrigerator at a time when I had no idea how I would be able to actually move into one.

Your words are so true! It took me forty years to finally create a beautiful farm life. The important lessons began in my 20's when I lived in a roach infested apartment in Brooklyn. Out back was a tiny, garbage covered slab of cement. One day I cleaned it up and started putting plants there. In two years it became this amazing garden with shrubbery and vegetables and vines. Whenever I had a little extra money I would push my toddler's stroller two miles to the nearest nursery and bring home flats of plants. By the end of that second summer all of the neighbors commented at how this little oasis brightened their lives every time they looked down upon it from their apartments. I had only done it for myself but it was such a blessing to others. The happiness was contagious.
Your videos are a bright spot in my week! xxoo

I try often to figure out how to stay courageous in the constant adversity that I face, and watching videos like these bring me comfort and hope. I personally try to do at least one little activity that will calm my anxious nerves but it is an ongoing battle. To anyone who's struggling to find peace in their daily lives, you are not alone. Living in the future has truly been ruining my present and I needed to hear those words out loud just now to realize it. I'm much older, 54, and so in a very different season of life, but still very busy with my 3 Etsy shops and 3 kids. I'm trying to learn to love where I am because I'm not ready to move somewhere else just yet...or maybe ever. You give very good advise for someone your age. I didn't have that wisdom then. Always be mindful of what you want because the years go so fast...so fast.

I studied and worked in a busy Rome, Siena and Viterbo for 10 years of my life.. but since I moved back to Sicily (where I'm from), in the countryside, I truly found my balance and inner peace. Now I am 29 yo and live with my wonderful dogs (Tobia, Zara, Strella, Lillo and Lotto), share with them the magic of nature and the contentment of growing plants and look after them day by day. After so many years of despair enchained in such a frenetic lifestyle, i found joy in the smallest things.. Noone would have ever wondered to drink my wine and eat my oranges and vegetables and olive oil. Now i have another little dream, that everyone could visit me in my cottage and cellar (i am currently patiently renovating it, with no rush) and share a little slice of this warm light.
I really love your thoughts and the way you give us glimpses of your magical life. Thank you very much for sharing your journey.

I grew up in a Big City in England.
I’ve always loved nature and animals. But never had the opportunity to be with either.
As an adult I moved away from city life and began a life in a medium size town, which had some countryside close by and 20minute drive to the Seaside.
I was livening with the wrong partner at the time and though I tryed to make the best of it, life was hard and often Cruel. And I got caught in this weird cycle.
An opportunity came my way and I went for it. This was good but some element from my old life were seeping into my new life .
I had some unbelievable hard choices to make, it was not easy at all.
My self an my second partner moved away from all the negative people and situations and began a new life in a new country.
It’s been an still is hard at times living here, but now I live in the middle of the countryside. It’s taken 30 + years to get here and it seemed impossible at the beginning.

Oh wow, this so mirrors my experience...right down to the sneezing fits...lol!
I spent my first decade of adulthood living in cities and being really unhappy with it, until I learned to "practice" for the life I wanted right where I was. I grew little gardens in our tiny condo yard, I would start seeds in windowsills, and hang bird feeders outside our windows. I'd go explore the woods when I could get the time off to do so. I learned to paddle a canoe, how to walk in snowshoes, archery, and was practically an expert in chicken breeds before we owned our first acre.
I remember all too well that feeling of "this will never change", and it really was hard to bear. But it really is a falsehood. Everything changes, and when you're ready, you can steer those changes into the life that's right for you.

Wow this is so lovely!… I remembered my ongoing sorrow in my early 20s. I am a childhood trauma survivor and I didn’t know I had CPTSD at that time. I became a lawyer but life was so hard for me, changed my occupation eventually. However my vicious inner critic did not get quiet whatever I accomplished. My inner critic’s only mission was to make me feel inferior, invaluable, unlovable and not enough. I quitted my career and moved to the US. I tried to pursue my law career in here as well but I couldn’t. Just lately, I have realized what was wrong with me. My only career is to make myself feel better right now whatever it takes. So, long story short is you take your emptiness wherever you go and whatever you do and whichever you have as long as you carry the traumas in your cells. Now my only dream is to achieve my full potential and share my healing journey with others in my native country to help the awareness level raise how our childhood experiences may ruin our entire life and makes us spending our lives without the living.

Small amount of locust trees not my favorite). But those trees allowed me to hang a hammock and read, rest and plan. Since the purchase I’ve established water. Electric a camper. Planted 38 trees countless shrubs an orchard etc started the base of a home there is much to do. Until the virus hit I was on a steady path to establishing a home for myself. Although life does through out bumps in the road I will never stop pursuing my dream. This is where being stubborn pays off and the need to fulfill my own dream.

When I was in my late 20s I lived in a large city and yearned to live in the country! Finally it happened in my late 30s. I had always lived in cities (and in different countries) so I wasn't even sure I would like it once I got there. Earning a living was challenging, but I learned to live frugally. It actually became a joy to do so, and has made life much simpler, and finding things free or at bargain prices has become so much fun! Now I'm in my mid-60s (you still feel the same as in your mid 20s, except with more experience under your belt, and you wonder how you are suddenly at this seemingly large number that is your age)! I love my life now. Whatever I may have "sacrificed" to live in the country has been more than made up by the many joys I experience every day. No noise, no traffic, no light at night to block out the stars, beautiful woods to walk in, chirping birds at my feeder (and the occasional deer and fox), space to roam. If it's really what you want, it will come with time and patience. Paola is right - do the best you can to love where you are in this moment - to find the joys, to look for what is good and beautiful. Every moment is part of the journey, to be savoured as best we can, and learned from, and grow from. We are all blessed by these moments with The Cottage Fairy. Thank you Paola!💝 And thanks for the little glimpse of spring - and pussy willows!🌷

Isometimes work on this inner voice telling me: "She can. I can't". Ever happened? I'll keep watching your videos anyway, I love them. But this one touched a depth that overcomes space and limits. So thank you. (From Milan, Italy).

I love reading these comments because I realize that there are many more like minded people in life than I could ever imagine. Paola has brought us out into this community of people who appreciate, admire and/or aspire to rural life. I especially like reading comments from older people in their 50’s and 60’s who get just as much enjoyment from watching these videos as I do. My aging mother lives with me, so I have to be in the city. I agree with and am grateful for the reminder to create such a life for myself here to enjoy. I am also encouraged by comments that remind me that I can have this life at any age. Thank you Paola and Cottage Fairy community ♥️🌷♥️🌷♥️🌷♥️🌷♥️🌷♥️

I was crying watching this. I’m at a weird stage of life right now. I’m from New York and last year my husband had a job opportunity and free schooling but it was in Texas. Never in my life have I ever thought of moving here. I was miserable at the thought. I did not want to leave the east coast. As a matter of fact, my dream was the move down south to the Carolinas once we decided to move from New York. My dream did not happen. It crushed me. I have been in Texas for over a year now, and ever day more and more.. I feel like yearn to just leave here and go back to the east coast. I want to be with nature, the big trees, the running water, the birds chirping. When I am here, I feel like everything looks dead, my backyard barely has grass, the creeks are always dried up. It depresses me even more than I am since I already suffer from anxiety and depression. I just pray one day in the future my husband’s schooling will pay off and we can go wherever we want, preferably again...to the Carolinas. My soul needs it. It’s like my soul feels alive when I am in nature, just looking at the beauty of it all.

You're a woman after my own heart. Moved to Florida 6 years ago from Long Island. I cried for 1& 1/2 years. Was completely miserable. I kept saying " I want to go home". Well we couldn't afford it anymore. We are retired and the cost of living there is crazy. I one day said to God, if this is where you want me to be, I'll accept it. From that day on I've been fine. I am also an avid nature lover. Fed my birds everyday.

I was being emotionally mentally, and physically abused by my biological sperm donor, I am getting a restraining order on him next Friday, I can't wait to walk outside and not have to run back into my home scared of what he would do, I am a senior this year, and after graduation i am planning to fully write, read, and do art, and thrift, and donate, its going to be a fun summer, I will be discovering what to do with my life and slowly living it, and finding out what makes me happy, what makes me just get up and do something fun, doing more simple things, enjoying the process and outcome of them, watching it all happen simply and surely. Thank you for sharing your video, it gives me an outline of where i can be and what I can already start putting into my life and live it better. Thank you lovely, blessed be.

"I needed to know that I could build a wonderful life whether or not things were perfect" I was also stuck in a nightmare situation three years ago at work. I was contractually bound for the year, but I committed to trying my very best to still live a satisfying life. Of course, I still wouldn't choose to go back to that time in my life, because I was sad, but I am really proud that I did find lots of things to be thankful for and joyous of during that challenging season. Reminds me that I am tenacious and can always find gratitude.

As someone constantly daydreaming about the future, this video made me question a lot of things. I'm always waiting and waiting and waiting for a chance to finally be content with the life I have and fully appreciate it. "When I finally live with my long distance boyfriend". "When I finally get that job I've been working so hard for". "When I can finally exchange the city for a little town surrounded by nature". I get so worked up in what will be, that I forget to enjoy what's happening right now. Thank you, Paola.

I just recently found your channel and I wanted you to know how inspiring to me it is. I'm 39 and it's my dream to live in a beautiful quiet place like yours. I currently live in a suburb of a large city, so my life is quite busy and loud with two young children. I do have a small balcony garden where I grow vegetables and herbs. This is my quiet retreat for now but I hope to one day get a small mountain cottage where I can have a bigger garden and chickens. ❤️

I have moved 36 times I'm my life. First because I was a military brat and then because my husband's job moved us every 2ish years. Early on I adopted the adage "bloom where you are planted". All the wile learning, experimenting, and dreaming of my someday garden. Now, this year, at the age of 57 I am slowly planting that dream garden. My joy has been in the journey. The things I have learned. The people I have met. Most of all the family I have raised!

After years of struggling with depression, I finally learned some key lessons. Chief among those lessons was the simple truth, "This will change," or, alternately, "Things will not always be like this!" I remind myself of that truth often, and I am grateful to be in a better place now and for the last 12 years or so. Gratitude is so important, and I hear you express gratitude often in your videos. Thank you for your beautiful, calming, positive, uplifting videos. I am so glad I discovered you!

Late last year, I just moved from a city life to a rural provincial life. For years I have been praying for it and thank God it finally happened. Living in a fast-paced city was good, there are so many things to do and places to go. Yet it felt like time was too fast there, I sometimes barely have time for self-care and got no time to relax. But when the pandemic happened it slowed time, yet still the busy city life was not healthy for me mentally. When I moved to a rural area, of course there was a lot of adjustments (and i am still adjusting now), esp that there are things we can find in the city that we can't find in the rural, but it made me more creative in finding alternatives for the things I get used to while in the city. What takeaway I have from living in a rural place is contentment and simplicity. There really is beauty in simplicity, and life is more enjoyable when there is contentment. I'm just glad I get to take care of myself now, more than ever.
