John, try taming the H.C. down a notch and maybe even try another powder like 2400, H-S 6, Longshot. You may lose 100-150 fps but tighten groups. I have an H-S 6 load that I practice with at 50 to 60 yards to conserve my XTP & other jacketed bullets. These mimic my basic poa/poi of 23.5gr. H110 in a 6" 629.
Yeah, if I start shooting a lot of 240s, I'll have to do something like that. I will probably reshoot at 50 yards again just to see if it was me or the reloads.

I have been using H110(which seems to be identical now) for a good # of years. But we have harvested many midwestern whitetail with a 44 rifle & a few with revolvers(629 & Super Redhawk). That being said, most of them were with 240 XTP. Excellent performance and accuracy. Even with handguns I have harvested out to 75 yards. Look forward to hunting updates in future.

I am just getting into reloading. Plan on using H110 at about 20.7 Gr (to start with), with 240 Gr coated hard cast lead. I think that will work as best as I can tell from the charts. Thanks, and take care.
@@bobcatforever3485 At a glance I would think that is good. When loading cast, I have used faster burning powders in the HS-6 range. Actually thousands of rounds with 10.5-11.0g of Unique have been shot through our family's 44s. We use to run max on 296 (25.0) back in the 80s & 90s but I started 23.5-24.0 in the late 90s and I believe it is much better on everything. And only at a small loss of velocity in revolvers and almost no noticable loss in rifles. Happy hunting.

I am not really a hunter but do target shooting and then make RUclips shooting videos with just a small following. One thing I have notices is that powder selection is kind of lean around here. I remember using Win 296 about 25 years ago. The loads were super hot and very powerful. Everyone at the range would look around to see who was shooting. My loading book didn't have a low & high grain charge for the powder. It was only one charge--Max.
Yeah, early reloading books had some coarse data. But W296 does not like being lightly loaded, sort of a drawback for the powder. People at the range still turn and look when shooting full powder 44 mag loads! Thanks for the comment and watching!
I just discovered 296 and holy moly does that stuff offer up some whoopin power! My first loads were with 180gr and 200gr xtp and even with the lower range charge weight they were screaming out of the gun. I tested them on water melons and I'm pretty sure the 180gr bullets were exploding inside of the melons because they were nearly evaporating the melon. Kinda fun to watch. Now...if i can just get rid of my tendency to tense up when firing those higher energy rounds ill be happy. Far too many shots are being pulled to the left. Got them beginner problems ya know.

First of your videos I've seen, nice tutorial thank you. I've loaded CP 260 and 300 with 296, carries a whollop, but I use my New Model Ruger Blackhawk 44 for my fishing trips. I've also loaded up 265 solid copper Underwood.
The 240HC worked well, one shot was all that was needed as long it was in the vitals. I did have to track one deer a mile or so but I hit it peripherally. Only killed Blacktail deer with HC. Thanks for the question and watching!
Yes Sir when I'm pedal to the medal it's W296 for me as well yes H110 is the same and can be interchangeable however I found W296 is a tad cheaper on 8lb kegs
You might try to gas check your bullet. I shoot the same bullet and use gas checks on the bullet with 22 grains of 296 with both the xtp and the cast. They shoot good in all of my guns.

Also Magnum primers fuse the bottom of the lead bullet too hot ! Suggest Large pistol primers and 2400 around 22.5 with 240 lead. I shoot a 629 4” with 240gr Jacketed SP with CP-38 at 9.5 grs and LP primers for 1147 fps .

The 260 grains requires the brass Tobe cut back aliitle. The 225 grains you don't need to. The been using the 225 grains , using h110 powder. I don't they ftx are around anymore. Because I can't find any anymore. My groups were 3 inch at 100 yards. What ever fxt I have right now I'm really don't waste them at the range anymore. They are devastating on deer even at 100yards

The Orginal Norma load was 1705 Fps with 240gr FNSP in 18.5” barrel Ruger Carbine.
They are hot but the XTP load is from the Hornady manual and the HC lead is from the Lyman manual.

Loading some 44mag 180gr XTP wit 29.2grs of 296. For a S&W 29-2/ 6" and a Ruger Super Blackhawk 7.5".

Magnum primers are just primers with a thicker metal. Don’t know why people don’t understand that.

That looks like a bevel base bullet, not like any gas check bullet I have ever seen?
