  • Carlos Sainz’s F1 future should not be this uncertain. In his 10th F1 season, Carlos has consistently shown that he is a driver of great quality, regularly grabbing points finishes with Torro Rosso before showing a young Lando Norris how it is done at McLaren. At Ferrari he has matched Charles Leclerc most of the time, taking race wins off an indomitable Max Verstappen over the past couple of seasons. However Ferrari will say goodbye to him at the end of this season and despite there being a seat available at Red Bull and Mercedes, Carlos may find himself at the worst team on the grid next season. So why is Carlos Sainz being left behind this silly season? Well, let's find out.

And yet no one needs him.
Mercedes are investing on young longer term talent as a replacement for Lewis.
Red Bull need a second driver, not a competition for Max,. Perez money is also handy considering that Red Bull is pretty new in producing their own power train (and I could imagine they need money for that expansion)
Obviously Ferrari do not need him because they dropped him.
Mclaren won't be giving him a seat again, not with Piastri and Norris just doing just mightily fine.
Aston Martin have Lance to consider and Fernando is more marketable.
The rest could probably do with cheaper drivers, since they are more concern about development and need that money be spent elsewhere.
Only Audi needs a brand ambassador and might see a need for Sainz.

Plus i don't think Carlos would be so close to Max to actually create problems. He would be much closer than Perez and most importantly much more consistent than Perez but he would always have a 2-3 tenth deficit which is in fact what RB wants.
Or the RB car is so difficult that he woul get there get horrible result and like perez, pierre and albon state that the car is really to max liking and they can't driver.

      💯% Totally agree.
Jos is always going to be a pain in the ass wherever Max is, and that is just part of the package. Nobody, including Max, can do anything about it.
Red Bull's days of having enough car to make up for a mediocre #2 driver are over. If Red Bull keep Perez for '25 they won't win the constructors. With Sainz they will. Max and Carlos have proven themselves and will accept that not every day is their day. Max would better Carlos on most days, but Carlos would get his share. I'm not a huge Sainz fan but he can drive and has earned a spot on a top team.
Mercedes being butt-hurt over missing out on Max makes sense, but I still can't rationalize taking a proven winner over someone who has a lot of maturing to do.

Carlos Sr and Big man Jos don't get along so that's red bull done. So he ends up getting Danny Ric'ed, but not by his own choosing.
McLaren are sorted with probably the best pairing on the grid.
If anyone gets the Aston seat in the unlikely event Lawrence takes Lance's toys away, Honda will want Yuki in there. On this years for he kinda deserves it.

But RB decision to not sign him is ridiculous. He would be better than Perez and he would still not have the pace to have threaten Max.
Perez is 5 thents away in most races. Yes in some he is only 2 tenth but in others he is a horrifying 7 tenths away.

Carlos is probably my favorite driver on the grid at the moment, but let's be real here. People keep saying he was 'let go' by Ferrari and that's not true. They have been negotiating a new deal since the end of last year when all the Charles contract rumors were swirling, too. We have no idea what Carlos is asking for in terms of compensation, but the fact that Ferrari didn't want to pay him what he was asking after months of negotiating is telling. The fact that NO ONE ELSE wants to give it to him, either, is also telling. I have a feeling that Carlos is asking to get paid like Verstappen and Hamilton.
On one hand, I get it. Up until a Miami, he could feasibly point to his results and say 'I'm the only non-Red Bull drive to win a race in over a full season, and I did it twice!' He's 97% as fast as Charles but doesn't make the mistakes or crack under pressure, and he's got better racecraft and strategy than the engineers paid to do nothing but that. But with that said, he's not some new guy on the block doing this. He's historically been an upper mid tier driver. B+ level. And I think that's still what he is, but he's not going to get better the way Piastri should. Carlos can get good results out of a good car consistently, but he's never going to make the car over-perform the way a LeClerc, Verstappen or Alonso would.
The reason he doesn't have a seat is because he's being picky and asking for too much money from the teams he wants to drive for like Merc or Red Bull. He likely won't want to play second fiddle to Max, and Mercedes has plenty of options that, while maybe not as good as Carlos in 2025, may only be a 1 year spot anyway as they want Antonelli in the car ASAP. They could drop Mick or Ocon or Vesti in the car for 2025 and get decent results, and if they're great, then great, they can move on from George after 2025 and put Antonelli in that seat instead.

If Hamilton had retired instead of moving to Ferrari and, for some reason, Sainz would still have to find another seat, then yes, he would be an option for Mercedes. But this way, it would be a straight swap. And Mercedes would look weak hiring the guy Ferrari saw as a worse option than Hamilton. So they have to go completely wild and gamble on a rookie that hasn't yet confirmed in F2.

Ferrari dropping Carlos for an aging Lewis is the biggest mistake ever.
Charles is their #1 driver, so what will Lewis be? #2? Why would a 7 time champ agree to that?
If Lewis is given #1 status, whats the point of charles who is their long term driver? They want to treat Lewis as a #1 driver and their long term guy gets treated as #2?
If kewis does well, its still a short term propositi9n. If he doesn't do well, what was the point?

Carlos should go to Sauber/Audi at this point... 2026 is going to be a big reset for all the teams anyway... if he chooses Williams for the short term he is gambling and won't get that Audi seat after making that decision.

Sainz's problem is that he considers himself one of the best drivers who can be number 1 in the best teams. But the reality is that his maximum is to be the number 2 driver in the top teams or number 1 in some of the teams that are fighting for 5-10 place in the race. The TPs of the leading teams know this, and they are also aware that with Sainz comes his political game-loving family. If Leclerc was on the market, RB and Mercedes would have already prepared a contract for him. This year, Leclerc had a brake problem in Bahrain and finished behind Sainz, a car set-up problem in Australia, where he did not finish his final lap in Q3, and also the tire warm-up in qualifying in Japan. In those races, Sainz finished ahead of Leclerc and many began to claim that Ferrari had let go of the wrong driver. But in the next four races - China, Miami, Imola and Monaco, Leclerc had no problems and was faster than Sainz in every single session, qualifying, sprint race or race.
Sainz is simply not at the level of drivers like Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso or Leclerc, although the latter has yet to become world champion. But they are in a different league compared to him and he has to accept that reality.

No doubt Sainz is a great driver, i would say at this point, even better than Hamilton. I think Ferrari fkd up.

Red Bull is making a mistake not aiming for Sainz, with a car that's on the decline they should aim to upgrade their driver pool and have someone race closer to Verstappen than Perez. They might lose the constructor championship to Ferrari at this rate.

I wish RB would let Checo go at the end of this year, and replace him with Carlos. Checo can go to Williams which is about where his current form deserves to be (and I’m sure they’d be happy to have him take Sergeants seat), and Carlos can pick up consistent P2s behind Max to take 2nd place in the Drivers championship for RB.

Every team would prefer a Team Player and CS lacks that . If a Team pays so much on a driver ,he has to help in their expected returns and support the team decision . An driver is because of the Team and the car they make and not vice versa .

While i agree with most of your points i think you are slightly overplaying how good sainz is. At Ferrari he hasnt matched Leclerc. Hes on average been a tenth and a half slower in qualifying and 2 and a half tenths slower than Leclerc over race distance in their time together, he has less points, less wins, less podiums and a losing head to head record in races and qualifying. The team orders narrative isnt true either, for 2 of Sainz's wins Leclerc was blatantly passed over by the team, one was justified (Singapore) and the other was blatant robbery (Silverstone). Despite this hes definitely good enough to be at a top team but i suspect teams are wary about the politics he and his family bring with him, Red Bull have already experienced this with him and max's dad at toro rosso
