    A big welcome into my life! I am a Dan a Welsh vlogger from the UK who has Aspergers Syndrome. Aspergers Syndrome or ASD is a form of Autism, often referred to as High Functioning Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder. I video every day of my life and upload videos for you to come along with me.
    I also have help videos for helping people get a diagnosis of Autism or Aspergers Syndrome, and also some advise and help for anyone who is friends, partners or loved ones who suffer from Autism or Aspegers Syndrome and just about anyone on the Autism Spectrum.
    I am also in a band: www.straightjac...
    *********************************
    Short history on me
    I was diagnosed with ASD (Asperger’s Syndrome) when I was 26 years old, after experiencing life with Autism that was unknown to me for 26 years.
    Now I enjoy all things in life with my dog Randell and my girlfriend Naomi, we try and help and educate anyone and everyone on Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome however and wherever we can.

    I've got five:
    "Everybody is autistic these days."
    I know it is seen as a "cool" diagnosis (like sociopathy) but people don't realise how this trivialises problems.
    "But you're nothing like Theodore Boone/Sheldon Cooper."
    Those portrayals are as accurate as trying to swat a fly on a moving train while riding a horse.
    "Everyone's a little autistic."
    Does that lawnmower sound like a nuclear explosion to you?
    "If you've got Asperger's, you are not autistic."
    It's a subtype.
    "You could be less autistic if you tried."
    I once had this said to me by a dyslexic class mate. I simply retorted "I never say that you could read well if you just tried.
    I know many people are well intentioned. I just hate feeling like a museum exhibit.

    One thing that annoys me is when NTs assert "you know what I mean" when they're trying to hint at something, then when I respond that I don't know, they'll simply say again "you know" and assume that I'm being deliberately difficult or just being pedantic.
    No, I do not know what they mean. I've tried to explain that I often don't get hints, especially subtle hints. People seem to refuse to accept that I can't pick things up through a sort of 'social osmosis' as neurotypicals seem to be able to.

    I've been called "The Walking Dictionary." I kid you not, my so called "friends" have used me as a superweapon for trivias and quiz games so THEY can win and get what THEY want.
    That's all I was to them. A living, breathing superweapon with a high IQ whose only function was to answer questions like "which snake has the longest fangs" or "which one of these fruits is not a berry?" They didn't even share the prizes with me most of the time.

      Gryphon of the Night say no to them the next time they ask you to participate, or answer wrong on purpose if u can't get out of it and when they ask u what's up u say "i'm a human being with feelings, not a secret weapon to be used for ur personal gain". as a human being with feelings, u should not be afraid to stand up for urself. now don't overdo it and yell and cuss and all that, but just calmly say no, and keep saying no if they try to come up with things to say to butter u up. bc at that point, they will say anything to get u to change ur mind. but stay strong fellow Aspie. it isn't hard, but life will get better the more u practice :)

    "Everyone is autistic as well". When you explain social events are straining. Yes, everyone can be tired at the idea of going to a wedding of co-workers they don't even like, but it can't be compared to what an aspie can feel in terms of intensity and it's all the time. It's like saying "I have a bit of tuberculosis : I cough sometimes".

    I have a very mild form of Autism (it used to be called Asperger Syndrome), and I can't stand hearing others tell me, "you don't care about anybody other than yourself." I actually care very deeply about others, but I just don't show it in ways most people understand.
    It also hurts my feelings when people say things like, "you are being.......," "you always......," "you never.........," "you need to learn to be more........," "you need to not be so........" While there is that remote possibility that I am acting like this just to be defiant, rude, self-centered, or whatever terms you want to use, it is more likely that either I am not aware of how my words or actions affect others, or something is going on. Maybe I am hungry, thirsty, tired, frustrated, overwhelmed, or something else is going on. I may find it difficult to communicate this in a way most people would understand.

    • @TheAspieWorld
      @TheAspieWorld  6 лет назад +3

      +Leanne Strong It’s annoying when people have an opinion on your condition.

      The Aspie World yes it is. I actually care very deeply about others, but I just don't show it in a way most would understand

    • @jean-leedebeer887
      @jean-leedebeer887 6 лет назад +3

      Leanne Strong I'm glad I see this comment. I don't know someone with AS. However, I've read novels in which a character has AS. But, as far as novels go, they aren't always clear on all the facts. So I started doing my own reading and listening. Because I want to know. On another channal about Asperger's, a lady also mentioned what one shouldn't say. One thing she said was "Look at me". Oh! Why I actually wanted to comment! I read a book about AS. (I don't remember the author now). Anyway, that was one book I'll never, never, ever read again or even recommend to anyone. Because it put people with AS in such a negative light. She made people with AS sound like this truly horrible people. And even though I don't know someone with AS, it felt highly unfair to me that such a negative book was published. So, I decided I'm going to learn on RUclips. From people with AS themselves. Maybe people's negativity strikes a nerve with me, because I have a disability and can relate some to people's unfair judgements. Now I'm gonna shut up. I'm actually a silent observer. A Silent learner. ;)

    • @jean-leedebeer887
      @jean-leedebeer887 6 лет назад +1

      John Elder Robeson says ittt so nicely in his book "Be Different", I don't remember the exact words, but it comes down to him saying he might not show caring outwards, but he may cry or smile on the inside for someone else. I'm a bit of a curious mind,. so, I read what I can find. I especially like reading and hearing from people with AS themselves. :-) me reading and listening makes me just realize we NT's should start leaving judgement about people way in the past. I wanted to say be slow to just, but I'm correcting myself and say don't judge at all. Ok, now I'm going to keep quiet. ;)

    lol I had one family member say to me that everyone is a little autistic since it is a spectrum after all which made me feel like they were not acknowledging the reality my diagnosis. I also had another family member say that she did not believe there was anything wrong with me because she did not notice the things I was saying. Apparently her being more observant is a requirement for my diagnosis to be real.

    People can make REALLY problematic remarks without realizing they're problematic. For example, my mother. When I was six or seven (e.g. before I was diagnosed), some relatives were over, and I squeal when I'm really happy (I did it more when I was a kid). So when the adults thought I wasn't listening, my mom imitated my squealing and said, "Doesn't it sound like a seal?" And then they LAUGHED! What's more, back then, she used the word "ret***ed" (or the equivalent in our language) a LOT. (She uses that word in English, too, but she must not know why it is offensive.) Now, I have multiple mental health problems as WELL as autism, and even though about 99% of my problems are related to symptoms of autism/one of said disorders (e.g. I have trouble crossing a street because of anxiety, I'm exhausted because of sensory overload), she'll say I'm being LAZY. *Sigh*

      My best defense to the r word (I won't spell it out out of respect of your point of view). I read the definition, and in context (and even when someone uses it harshly, which is key here) the word is harmless because the definition is accurate. I am and can be described with the word accurately in context. Its incredible when someone tries to use the word to hurt you and it doesn't hurt. I respond yes I am r+×$!#%. Thank you for stating the obvious. Then smile. I have certain learning deficits described perfectly by the word. Not Every one can accept it the way I have, so I don't want to imply that it could work for you, only you could decide that thru your own experience. Understanding every thing according to literal definition sometimes is a huge help. Others not so much.

    I have ADHD and I think it is rude when people say I just am not focusing and need to pay more attention well if that's it I have been having trouble focusing since I was a very young child. The to pay attention actually makes it worse sometimes. I know ADHD has nothing to do with autism but I just am say people who can't relate are often so fast to judge.

      +The Aspie World I normally hold my tongue but after hearing it over and over again I just blurt this out and have said it ever since. They don't even know what to say after that. It's great! They don't even realize that what they're really doing is negating the fact that our whole lives have been a complete struggle. I have to keep our household sane while each of my three are so different and all have autism. It's hard and that's the last thing I want to hear from a stranger who has no clue how it is to live with autism.

    I have Asperger's syndrome.
    The most common question I get is what's it like to be autistic?
    For me it's like being forced to solve a million peice puzzle when you cant fit all the pieces together and sirens are blaring all around you.
    At the same time I see thousands of other people fitting the pieces together. To cope, I pull out my own smaller puzzle and build it.

    "Stop being so immature and grow up." Literally not that easy. Adult-type stuff causes me a lot of high stress. To deal with that kind of stuff on a day-to-day basis is exhausting to say the least. Even just the errands I did for shopping while I lived at my campus, the driving around avoiding traffic, trying to find the right food items, being indecisive, the little things add up and over time it just exhausts me. And worrying about making small talk, all of that makes me not want to do anything else for the evening/night.

      ikr as a fellow aspie i overcame a lot by being disowned by my own father, being beaten up bc of my aspergers in a locked in facility by other messed up kids for 7 months, going through 3 different foster homes and i still managed to get a job (with the help of a job coach) during school, and i graduated high school. i even had my own place for a little bit but i ended up getting into an abusive relationship and got out, then i started having panic attacks and didnt feel safe where i was living anymore. bc of the abuse, i started having problems with my leg and hip. i tried to put it off as long as i could bc my job needed my everyday and it was strenuous work which only made the pain worse until i begged my boss to let me go to the hospital. i had a doctor tell me to stay off it for a couple days straight but i got unjustly fired. i didnt know what to do bc no one prepared me for that scenario. then i took in some friends in my apartment bc they were homeless and thought we could get away with it but then i got an eviction notice. not sure how to handle everything, i left and came to live with my half sis and her family. now im currently job searching while helping out on a farm. the plus side to all this is i got to experience things and learn from my mistakes so i can make better choices in the future

    My #11: "You probably have ADHD/OCPD/[other disorder which doesn't match my symptoms]." --These sort of comments are usually delivered by new GPs who are in a rush, psychiatrists who have just met me, and "armchair diagnosticians" who still think autism is rare, only presents in children (hey, we grow up!), and/or must obviously look "severe" and fit the narrow stereotypes or limited interactions with autistics that the speaker has had.
    That is to say, this happens because of assumptions like the 10 Dan mentioned. (And because my gender is female.)

      here's a tip and this is something i learned the hard way more than once: don't disclose ur diagnosis with anyone unless u have known them for years and can trust that they'll be smart about it. but if this was someone u had known for a while before telling them, then im sorry they said that to u. but if u put urself in their shoes, they were probably just very confused bc perhaps u act in a way that most people with ur diagnosis dont and they're more familiarized with the typical symptoms that are very easy to catch. maybe to them, u always seemed like someone without the diagnosis

    I used to work in a store and occasionally we would see a child have a meltdown and it seemed inappropriate for the child's age - the other employees would judge the parents and say the child was spoiled and need a good spanking. Even before I knew about ASD, I thought maybe the child has sensory issues and is overwhelmed (which was my children's and my experience with sensory overload). People just like to judge :(

    I actually went into a bookstore about 3 years ago when I started to figure out I could be on the autism spectrum. I asked the lady behind the counter if there were books on autism, and she just assumed I had a child with autism. I said "No, it's for me" and she just stared blankly. Ugh!

      I find it flattering that they compare me to an intelligent person of the spectrum. I LOVE Rain Man. I think if he was a real person, living now, we would get along great! We have a lot in common. The same anxieties, the same taste in late night TV game shows, and a struggling loved one desperate to connect and understand the way we view the world. And in an ever changing world, where a word two seconds ago now offends everyone around us, is a terrifying thing to wake up to!
      It's the Sheldon Cooper one I despise. Because it sheds an EXTREMELY toxic light on how the world thinks we act. AND HE'S NOT EVEN AUTISTIC. HE'S GAY.
      I'm not a homophobe but that comparison seriously hurts because now I am terrified to be anywhere near people because I'm scared that's how they see me.

    I’m not autistic but I have been tested twice: the first time for general autism spectrum disorders and the second time for asbergers. One thing that annoys me though is when someone says everyone is autistic. Sure, anyone can have autistic symptoms such as being introverted, repetitive actions and difficulty communicating, but that doesn’t mean everyone is autistic. Take being pregnant for example. Anyone can have symptoms of being pregnant such as back pain, tiredness and swollen feet. Is everyone pregnant? No. Although autism is fairly complex, there is one thing that is simple about it; you either have it or you don’t. There’s no little bit about it. Saying everyone is autistic is like saying everyone is a bit depressed. Yes, we all have down days, but depression is a condition people have to live with. Same as autism.

Thankfully I have no emotional reaction to it, I just see it as an opportunity to educate. Genuine question: Why shouldn't you say #1 & #2 to an autistic person?
    I've had a lot of experiences with meeting autistic people where I could immediatly tell they were autistic. May have to do with the fact that my father works at a school for teens with mental or physical "disabilities" (don't know the propper, PC term in english). Their form of autism may be much higher on the scale considering they are in the same class as a kid with down syndrome, but when my boyfriend first told me that he is autistic I was really surprised and confused. It did not match with my previous experience with people with autism and I'm sorry to say that I said forbidden phrases 1 & 2 immediatly...
