I have ASD and suffer from pretty serious depression. Sadly, these were not diagnosed until I was 22. So, for most of my life, I struggled with understanding why I was different and how to improve socially. This video was really encouraging and a nice overview.
I might recommend that, for females especially, the presence of animals can do wonders. I started volunteering at a local barn when I was in HS and suffering from social ostracism and having no friends (I still have no friends outside of the internet). It feels incredible to be needed by another living creature, to have them rely on you and be happy to see you no matter how depressed you are that day. They make you get up and force you to MOVE. That alone is enough to forget your own struggles if only for a short period of time.
I took to training horses who others thought of as useless or beyond help. It was kind of a symbol of my own struggles and, helping them re-learn old training or learn new skills encouraged me to do the same for myself. I taught myself to do artwork of all kinds and am getting commissions now. Art has opened up other hobbies I would not have considered years ago. It's important to remember the simple healing power of pets and other animals (yes even livestock) can have on depression. Even if you can't have a pet of your own, you can volunteer at shelters or stables.
Hope that helps someone looking for another option to combat depression. Working with animals has done wonders for myself.

I have struggled with depression ever since I was a child. Since I think so deeply about things and have a meloncholic personality, it makes me much more prone to it. I think my first full out depression episode was in grade 8 because of changes in family structure and not being ready for the adult world. At the time I had no idea that Aspergers and OCD were an influence on these feelings because I was not aware of them yet. I now have techniques to help me reduce depression, but it still does creep up at times. Keeping busy definitely helps as long as I remember my meaningful purpose in doing tasks.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers even though i came to the doctor to deal with anorexia and depression. I was 12-14 when i suffered through anorexia and depression, and i was slapped in the face with autism instead. It’s more than obvious i have aspergers, but i constantly feel like they put the wrong label on me. I keep telling my mom about this, but she doesn’t think i’ve ever been affected by depression - which is absolute bullshit since i suffer from so many symptoms, plus i’m suicidal and tried to kill myself via anorexia. I STILL have depression, and no one in my family takes me serious when i tell them about it. It makes me feel so angry.

I have dealt with depressive feelings with my Asperger's, but not depression in its entirety. I was bullied in school for my sensory issues and for being interested in shooting sports, and my father died 9 months ago. But whenever stress, sadness or anger comes over me, I do my best to remedy the negative feelings at hand. Whether it's playing video games, looking at my collection of gemstone crystals, thinking about my favorite video game character, or a day at the gun range or theme park, I have a way to cheer up, calm down, unwind, or find my inner Zen.

god bless you Sariafan93, I had the same problems with my grandfather on my mums side, it was a tramatic experience, him almost passing(he was really ill, and alomst did die one night in hospital whilst I was visiting them this summer, hugh as my family went off to america-to be fair it was a shock and he was fine eforehand,, but I was so and still am mad at them for not being there at the crisis scene!, and my grandmother on my fathers did pass a few years before of cancer and another relative of an aunt, I remember feeling intensely depressed and scared, the death of them haunted me, as they suddenly had went and routine changed, I suffereed many cases of meltdowns and overload, I went a few tough years experiencing severe anxiety issues, I couldnt have my own family be with me anymore, non of them were autistic, I found them (and still do) very confusing, the world made no sense to me so I just turned to my creativity to make more sense of everything and push through these tough times. Now is all about re building relationships, I am 17, (I have only been diagnosed with dyspraxia-I am going with the NHS system to get help and a proper offical diagnosis.) I hope life for all of us becomes better. Wish you best wishes*

4th Chairman ugh. Politics. But yeah I can see your point about not wanting civilians have guns but they end up with them anyways. Now we're dealing with people 3d printing guns. So they will end up with guns anyways. I can't believe the human race has to end this way. I rather a disease or a disaster wipe us out, not violence.
      I hate this world. 😞

    • @tragictransformerelectra3319
      @tragictransformerelectra3319 6 лет назад

Reason why I don't talk about politics because then I get so many haters. My goal is always get people like me. May be sometimes I try too hard because I still end up losing friends. I had suicidal thoughts because of that and on top of that I just don't get life at all. It's so hard that death seems more inviting. I try hard to live though for my cousin. I'm so depressed. 😞

    My anti- depressant strategies:
    (1) Go for a hike in the woods if possible, a walk around the block if not
    (2) Listen to (upbeat) music
    (3) Drink or eat a nutrient bomb (like a smoothie)
    (4) Meditate
    (5) Engage in some escapism: read a book, watch some TV
    (6) Strategize: solve a low-hanging-fruit-type problem
    (7) Delay any major decision making

People all around me, including my girlfriend, have depression, and me being hyper-empathetic,.. it's something that affects me a lot despite not being chronically depressed myself.
My girlfriend has finally been on medication for it since last spring and it has turned her life upside down (in a positive way!!)
one thing she realised can help is stimming, actually! Especially when you have self-destructive tendencies, stuff like biting on chewelry or fidgeting with tangles can help relieve a lot of pressure.

I just discovered you Yesterday and Im shocked by everything you have said about autism traits, you literally described my entire life! I didn't know why I felt so much different from others and I can never go up to ppl, I let ppl come to me to talk to me. Im easy to talk to. I suddenly start talking about my passions which are Cannabis and Music non-stop! I go soo in depth ppl find it interesting talking to me which is pretty cool :) I am a college student going for a business admin degree. I feel like the it will structure me well into the person I always wanted to be. If it weren't for your Videos I wouldn't be aware. Im going to get an evaluation with a psych near me and see how it goes, I know for sure that I do need help in making good eye contact, communication skills, staying still and learn to not care about what others think:)

One of the things that helped me after I was diagnosed was realizing that I get over loaded and need time to recover. So if I'm at a big social event or even something like did the grocery shopping, something and I feel really rundown the next day and like I can't do anything I need to give my self some time to recover from the over stimulation and social exhaustion. And I try not to be too hard on myself no one can be productive 100% of the time.

I was diagnosed with Autism aged 7 and I have only recently been suffering from depression and isolation now that I'm an adult. I believe that my (undiagnosed) depression might be from getting older and the fact I still live at home with my mum, dad and older brother who is also on the autistic spectrum, still unemployed and never had a real full time paid employed job, still single and worried that most girls are not interested in me because of who I am and a whole lot of other things. I have mentioned earlier that I'm an adult and yes I am actually 30 years old and really should be the age I have got to find paid work and get my life sorted by finding a wife and living together as a family. I'm worrying about a lot of things right now and wishing I was 10 years younger and OMG I am so angry with this right now! I just want my life sorting out...

well I'm 27 so not too far off, turn 28 in 2 months so i can understand how you feel even if you're at least 3.5 years older than me being as your comment was posted 4 months ago. but i just was fired for cussing out a lady a month ago taking a delivery order at a pizza place. i lost my temper cuz i was stressed and couldn't let it out cuz i really don't trust anyone. my coworker was stoned and im friends/was with him until yesterday. i didn't want to see him fired, i couldn't make sure he did his job right and me as well. so lone and behold i cussed a lady out on the phone. my boss tried really hard to keep me there i guess.. but the lady threw a hissy fit on facebook and everyone else ive had issues with during my 4 years of working there did as well.. they tagged my bosd in it and i was fired.. NTs can be jerks.. don't beat yourself up over not having a fulltime job or a gf, i wish i had a gf and fulltime job as well. but it's best to focus on what you like and want instead of basing how we feel on that of those around us.. honestly this is the most hypocritical thing in contrast to my past actions.. but i feel the same way so that's what we're all here for right? to feel better and live better? so this is as much for you as it is me finally realizing my own mistakes. stay strong homie

I do support your videos 100%. I use to suffer from depression a lot in my late teen years and even until I was 21 years. There were a lot of times I didn't want to be out of my room, I didn't want to be around my family. And I use to show a lot of anger problems with other people including my family. I don't get angry around people anymore like I use to-and I go this event where many other people with different disablilites-they're allowed to pick where they want to go and buy stuff. One thing I was ashamed of that I always tried to harm myself back then (I slashed my hand with a letter opener one time and I was taken to a mental hospital)-that's what I'll never forget. I never knew why I did that-or what caused me to do that. But I know that could be a serious danger zone about any person who suffers depression-even in autism/aspergers- doing self harm or harm to others. That's one thing basically many people have to be careful about. I use to take medications but they always gave me serious side affects when my hand would shake all the time, I would feel dizzy-and start having seizures. They had to take the medication out. I don't get angry around people often like I use to, and as I said I don't mind going places and being around company. I've been doing really well lately.

Good video. Depression is something that does get overlooked a lot with ASD. I would love to see a video on the lists and APPs and things that you use to get through day to day things, you always make it seem very effortless like you are not bothered by much at all, but in our house simple things can sometimes seem so difficult.

It makes no sense why it's overlooked considering that many of the traits associated with ASD are major contributing factors or even symptoms associated with depression. It's like math and physics, where one subject goes in hand with the other one. If you lack the social intelligence needed to navigate through life and emotions, then of course you are more at risk for depression or suicide. It's pretty obvious.

When I get in a depressed state for whatever reason, I have to try and carry on with work to distract myself otherwise I'd find it more difficult to rouse myself. I think being a female and covering up my aspergers and trying to copy other people can be exhausting and this can bring on a bout of depression.

What I do when I am depressed is do the things I normally do. Doing the things I know I usually have fun with (even if I am not currently having fun, because depression does that), eventually the depression goes away. It takes a few days, sometimes weeks, but it will go away on it's own.

Having some sort of depression or anxiety disorder is not very suprising for people with an ASD. A power nap does magic for me in the afternoon whereas sport does not make much of a difference these days anymore. I know it's a somewhat delicate topic but medication helps during certain phases of the day. But not the SSRI. Most of them do more harm than good in my opinion.

yes, charts and calendars and writting stuff down before hand. but my friends never have been much for cooperating with me being the one to plan things out. honestly this is weird for me to comment on here. i don't think i've ever talked to anyone who has understood me or how it is before. to talk to people that get it is really emotionally overwhelming. at the same time tho i feel like i have to explain things to the point that it annoys people and they ignore it so i guess I'm just hoping making this comment isn't just going to be me talking to air again as usual. but as you said life never goes as planned so I'll try my best to not die inside if ignored by my own kind. when i think about how other people with aspergers are like i get this jaded view on how the media has shown them. i can see myself in how you talk in this video, speaking so fast that no one can understand it lol, but i do understand it from personal experience. the weird thing is NTs in my life have made me feel demonized and plauged with something unfit for a human. i try being nice to people and find it very difficult to purposely hurt others, or what i see as being hurtful. it's difficult to stand up for myself cuz all i see around me is the way that NTs do things. maybe i should stop trying to mimic the NTs so much and just ditch them altogether. i mean i know that's impossible, but we've all felt like it at one time so you get where I'm coming from. it's odd to me to say things i think ya'll might know cuz up until now I've felt alone and never really thought about this even being an option. i guess i just tried to impress the NTs so much that i never thought "hey wait a minute, what about people just like me?" cuz i can be a smartass if someone is clueless about something i feel that was obvious and i suppose that it would hurt to have me be like, hey guys, do you know what i mean and then yall know what i mean but yall came off to me about it as if i were ignorant.. maybe that's how the NTs i do that to feel? well yolo, here goes my feelings

    • @etherealblue
      @etherealblue 6 лет назад +1

maybe I'm ignorant and just really high functioning? this self doubt is killing me inside. that's what really annoys me, all the self doubt i have. i am here to learn tho. (it feels weird to say i am) the idea of consistency and holding up my end of a bargain sounds farfetched to me just because i have so much self doubt. like you said tho, make everyday a doodle, not a bunch of expectations

Throughout time to time there has been things that made me feel angry and depressed when most of the time I had to get over them. But the important thing is not to be thinking about any of it and actually be focusing on what’s positive in the world. That’s one thing about being on the autism spectrum that I think can be bad about it. Discrimination and excluding are the factors but In the end it’s the people that are causing it who are the problems. I don’t actually have depression but I do know when there is something basic in life that I’m not happy about.

You are a great help and a source of inspiration for me and countless others! 😎 I was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder and later with dysthymia (a long term chronic depression) but I was misdiagnosed for 25 years before I finally got the diagnosis ASD in early 2017. I already use the coping strategies you mention but sometimes life just gets to be too much. I have gone through several burnouts during my life, and after each one I found it harder and harder to recuperate. Perhaps you can do a video on burnouts. There is new research that suggests that “autistic burnout” is a real problem. It basically means that your body and adrenal gland etc. just give up after prolonged exposure to stress and elevated cortisol and epinephrin levels.

I am a 53 year old adult on the autism spectrum who only got diagnosed with ASD in 2014 and did not receive any post autism diagnosis support. I have now been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia which affects me physically and mentally. My mental health has been deteriorating over several months with bouts of depression and anxiety. I have a community advocate who works for a mental health charity has not even noticed this and did not believe me when I said that I am depressed as she thought this was due to my autism and did not want to know. I am unable to get diagnosed for depression by GP as I am unable to express my feelings and identify my emotions clearly. He only uses a long list of set questions which I struggle to answer as way of assessing me and will not change it because I am on the autism spectrum. He was unaware that I was on autism spectrum as it had not been added to my list of health conditions and had to point out that I had sent them a copy of my diagnosis twice (brief and full report) as the autism diagnostic service did not send notify my GP of my diagnosis.

What is your opinion about self-diagnosis when it comes to autism? Especially when the professionals that are doing the diagnosis are diagnosing based off a very stereotypical view of autism; specifically, little autistic boys. So adults that are biologically female will have a harder time getting diagnosed.

Some of my bullies at school will use loud noises against me and it is very painful. I try to tell them to stop and even try to get my teachers involved but it doesn't seem to work. I should mention that it's hard for me to tell the teachers because I guess that to them these noises that they are doing don't count as bullying. This makes me feel like I shouldn't even bother them(the teachers) even though it's painful. Plus I've always found it hard to tell a teacher anything due to experiencing backfires and the fact that I don't want to either draw attention to myself and cause me to be a bother to someone.

I have aspergers syndrome, I was told that at 13 years old and ever since then (I'm 22 now) I still have a problem accepting it.
My mother over reacts with it, since she's a SPED teacher, my husband and friends compare me to other people and tell me that I don't have it.
I thought that I'd be able to accept it but it's a lot harder than it used to be since my 'tendencies' cause me to be a burden, it also doesn't help that I have severe anxiety and hate to be touched.
I've tried these things that you said to do but they are short term. I don't want to be depressed about it at all, but I don't want to have to hide medication from my husband. What got YOU to ACCEPT yourself?

hey, I really appreciate your videos! I'm wondering about my boyfriend's reoccurring feelings of resentment and his pulling away. I'm wondering specifically why he doesn't remember our having discussed and dealt with the feelings and concerns of what he gets resentful about and if this is somehow related to depression. Our lives seem fine but I noticed he's been sort of withholding some connection, enthusiasm lately. A big change came up for me that could be very positive and I'm looking to lessen the impact on him of changes and need to increase our income. What I don't understand is why he has been a bit withdrawn even a couple of weeks prior to the opportunity and then has this resentment thing resurfacing and cannot recall the multiple times we've visited this with emotional empathy and compassion and care and love. I wonder if he's having depression cycles that cause him to withdraw and the resentment piece is the Aspergers and if so, what to do about it. Thank you!

What is the test for being diagnosed? I couldn’t understand you. I was diagnosed as a child but I want to be sure that I actually have it. I have been having issues with social situations more and more lately and hating myself the more bad things happen. It’s so hard for me to understand people and that makes me hate myself so much.

+Papyrus Senpai Hey I did a video on testing for AS with a link to an online test. It’s in my playlist Aspergers and Autism Help.

Hey I'm really thinking that I may be on the spectrum but I am very scared to go to the doctor because it makes me feel very nervous and uncomfortable because I have been medicated for depression before and I'm scared of that happening again. Is there anything I can do or a way to overcome this fear?

+gabrielle Allison Base way to overcome is to
      Face head on.

So i have been diagnosed with depression about a year ago and a few months ago I was told that i may have Asperger by some of my friends with it. While I was looking at the symptoms and some documentaries and stuff about it, I came to the conclusion that they are 98% to be true...the 2% is my doubt because it seems that I don't respond to most of the symptoms like others...I would believe that to be because of my depression but I have not figured it out yet(I mind to say that I am going to try and take the diagnostic test when i have time though) What do you think?

Almost every time I go out to hangouts or party's with my fiancé I end up getting really anxious or I get really depressed. I usually just avoid social situations like that but I know my fiancé really likes them and I just want to be able to go to these types of things with her and actually have fun. Can someone help.

I am 12 years old and have had multiple different diagnosis However one recurring thing is hi-functioning autism however it is hard to now diagnose some like you or me for the reason as Asperger syndrome is now looked as autism (my opinion is that this is wrong) however all the doctors have concluded that i do have Asperger syndrome and i am now looking for more help (wich you have supplied). Thanks
