GE Cafe Grind and Brew Coffee Maker Review

- Grind and brew coffee makers are a bit of an anomaly. On the one hand, it's an incredibly convenient method to make drip coffee. On the other hand? Most of them are built like crap. The competition is slim, but here we review one of the newest players to the game to find out if it's any good. Hint: it could use A LOT of work.

Am I complaining too much? 🤣
Not at all-an excellent review thannks
We have their Specialty Drip and I hate it. We returned one and got a new and still, it doesn't produce hot coffee! My husband loves it and I feel it's only because of the wifi capabilities. Well, I had to bring out my $40 coffee maker and now have two coffee pots on my counter hahaha. I refuse to use it. I should not have to pour a cup and then place it in the microwave to get it up to temp 😒. However, I'm all about esthetics and was entertaining the idea of getting this. But thanks for your review, I'll pass; especially due to my other experiences with this brand.
Haha. We now have the Espresso and another drip machine on our counter tops. It is kind of annoying to have two coffee machines on the counter!@@tiffanygossett7125
No, actually the perfect amount of shitting.
Excellent feedback. Thank you for posting your honest opinion
Thank you for reviewing this coffee maker. I have been looking at it for a month or so but I will keep looking.
Good decision!
Chris, first off, glad I came across your channel, you gave a great honest review that didn't require me to sit through a bunch of fluff just so you scored better engagement with your video. I truly appreciate that! I was considering this one, I currently have the non grind and brew version and have had it for about two years. Occasionally it does what you talked about and simply doesn't brew when the timer is set. No warnings, no anything, it simply doesn't brew. Then other times when I think I have turned off the automatic brewing from the app, I'll get a message in the app that says "add water to coffee maker". It's like it does the opposite of what I'm asking sometimes. When I purchased my current Cafe unit, other buyers claimed that it also leaked, but through two years of use, I have yet to have a leak. Other than that, it does make some of the best drip coffee I've had and we've tried no less than 8 machines in the last three years until we landed with the cafe unit.
Appreciate the nice comment! They do make good coffee, but with too much potential for drama. Still haven't landed on a grind and brew I love but I'm still on the hunt!
I appreciate the honest review.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Almost bought that machine. It’s great to laugh watching review videos!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for commenting!
I’ve had mine for 7 months and it’s been great.
Glad you like it.
I have the espresso machine and LOVE it!!! It is awesome! Getting this next!
Hope you enjoy it!
I had the automatic espresso machine for a year and finally returned it. The software on it is so bad. Beautiful and makes an incredible cup of coffee but the software is shit and it gets stuck in the descale cycle
I haven’t experienced that, yet! I hope I don’t!! Do they take it back?
Have you used the WiFi app feature with the machine? If so what are your thoughts on it. Thanks.
I did, but kept it out of the review due to the other problems with the machine. It worked fine, didn't really offer much that you can't do directly on the machine though.
What are your thoughts on the one cup/mug brewing? I recently got this machine and it brews a carafe fine (not $300 fine in my opinion but fine) But I cannot get it to brew a decent one cup. Tried different beans, different grind settings and all cups turn out watery and non-drinkable.
Hmm.. is it using a decent dose of beans when you check the spent grounds container?
Have you reviewed and of the Capresso Grid and Brew machines?
I have not yet, but they are on my radar!
Thank you for this very honest review!! Excellent video!!
Glad it was helpful!
I own this machine and have used it daily for 4 months. I’d say this review is spot on. Chris didn’t mention the burr grinder feature which is the main reason I bought this particular machine. I’m having trouble getting the twist off grinder piece back in place. Anyone out there have any suggestions?
Thanks for commenting. That burr grinder part on top requires a lot of muscle. Maybe use pliers?
No kidding, I had to really clean the grounds out of the grinder chute, but I finally got it back together. Now the grinder won’t work at all. Have you ever had that happen? @@ComputerStuff
Sorry Stacey, I don't have good advice for you. If you take the burr top off, reset power, then reinsert, does that work? Otherwise you may want to call GE for a warranty replacement. Their customer service has been "ok" in my experience. @@user-bg4vu9fj8u
I just received one for Christmas. It seems that some sort of check valve in the water reservoir is missing in mine because it will not hold water. Everything pours out of the bottom so you cannot fill it in the sink, and it dumped all 8 cups worth over my counter top when trying to fill it in the unit. Unimpressed doesn't begin to describe my sentiments.
Welcome to the leaked GE club!
I’m familiar with the Cuisinart. It’s a mess to own. It has a blade grinder which produces finds and boulders. It’s like using a blade spice grinder to grind coffee beans. It’s better to have a standalone grinder (conical or flat burr) and a drip coffeemaker. Forget the gold filter basket. They are not fine enough to stop the finds from getting through. You did a fair review. These machines, although they sound great, can’t outperform separate machines.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment!
I have a Ninja coffee maker and it spills water from the reservoir as well. I have a stand alone grinder and am constantly having to clean up grounds from my countertop. I guess this will help to consolidate my coffee brewing anger into one device rather than many. That way, when the machine wars begin, I'll just have to fight one coffee related robot....
hahah. coffee robots. Bring em on!
Give me 5 counter points for a part 2 on "why it's not" To get a chance to be featured on the next video.
Why it's not, what?
I almost didn't buy this machine based on this review. I have zero issues with this coffee machine. Please don't let this review change your mind. Best $300 investment. Coffee 5⭐️ Looks5⭐️Simplicity 5⭐️

Drew berrymore now makes a grind and brew sold at walmart from other videos looks like it makes some kind of mess also but havent heard of leaking as bad as yours! Thanks!
Interesting, I'll have to look into that.
I just bought one, in sage green. Yes, it's a little messy to clean up but I love that my Peet's Major Dickason's whole coffee beans get ground nicely in this and brewed deliciously. I brew the 16-ounce size into a large 20 ounce insulated coffee mug because I'm not doing this twice in the morning. Freshly ground and brewed coffee with quality beans is delicious!! And it was only $99. I'm not paying $300 for these type of machines.
@@apAvocado Did you mean you bought ge cafe grind and brew or the drew berrymore the one i was talking about? If you bought the ge how do you get around the leaking issue he talks about in video?
@@michaelb4512 I bought the Drew Barrymore perfect grind and brew from Walmart. It makes great coffee and so far I’ve had no issues. Yes, clean up is a bit messy because there will ground coffee near the area that shoots the grounds into the brew basket. I wipe it with a microfiber cloth. I let the grounds cool, put in compost bucket and rinse the brew basket with warm water. I let it air dry. I brew 16 ounces into a short and wide insulated 20 ounce mug I got at Amazon a long time ago. As soon as I’m done with my Keurig k-pods, I’m giving my Keurig supreme plus coffee maker to my son who is in the dorms at college right now.
$99 is a steal for this machine. It's worth $99 - Not - $300@@apAvocado
I didn’t have any of those issues - you prob got a defective one. But I cannot get a strong brew for single serve
I did not get a defective one. There are plenty of people who are having the same issue as mine. Maybe you just got a unicorn!
Yes! Thank you!! Lots of good marketing on this, not a lot of good information. How does a major company release a coffee brewer that... leaks!?
By rushing it out, not testing it, or just hoping people buy the damn thing without returning it? Not sure, but it's aggrevating! haha.
@@ComputerStuffcompared to the delonghi truebrew which I’m also considering, you briefly touch on it but would you say that more an americano type coffee vs. this Cafe being a traditional drip that grinds beans into filter basket? That’s crazy how many grounds went everywhere in this too.
Yeah this cafe makes an absolute mess. The TrueBrew uses an espresso puck brew head so as a result, it uses several pucks to create a full pot of coffee. This is a bit clumsy, and time consuming. It also won't produce a GOLD cup if this is something you're after (GOLD cup does taste great). True Brew is slightly pressurized as well so and while I'm sure it produces a fine cup of coffee, but it won't be like drip or pour over. Also Delonghi has some questionable reliability. @@JimSpence
Try cleaning the pot, the top looked filthy. I know 3 people who have this unit and never had that problem.
My ass they haven't had problems. There's no way my unit is a lemon. Bad design.
I just sent mine back a few weeks ago. SO FINICKY! Great features, poor execution. Got a Moccamaster and it is fabulous!
Hah! Our next video is on the Moccamaster.
I own this machine. In my opinion this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Mine has worked flawlessly. It has never leaked, and if you keep the burr clean the mess is minimum. Most of all it makes great coffee
how do you like it? Any issues and how long have you owned it for? thanks
@@austbart I have had it about 6 months. I have had zero issues. Make sure you install the valve correctly on the bottom of the storage tank. I installed it upside down initially and it leaked. Makes great coffee.
