Great video. Mysterio is the main reason I'll see Spider-Man FFH. Hopefully the plot isn't as predictable as it seems. As dreams are made on is defiantly one perfect Spider-Man story.
1:00 - N°5 - Return of the burglar 3:00 - N°4 - Mysteries of the dead 5:15 - N°3 - Mysterioso 7:20 - N°2 - Spiderman goes mad 9:05 - N°1 - As dreams are made off
Had a Mysterio action figure as a kid. They couldn't think of an action feature to give an illusion-based character toy, so, he squirts water out of those eye-themed cape clasps.
My favorite Mysterio story would be Guardian Devil in Daredevil. In this one, Beck has an uncurable cancer due to his years of using chemicals for his special Effects. He decides to give himself a swan song by making Daredevil crazy (Spiderman was rumored to be a clone at that time so he felt that a fight agaînst him would've felt empty). He does this by tricking him into believing that a baby is the reincarnation of the Antichrist through a series of elaborate hallucinations and by drugging him. He also attacks Matt's personal life by framing Nelson of Lydia's murder and giving a false AIDS diagnosis to Karen before sending Bullseye to kill her in front of Matt in a sadistic fashion. When Daredevil and Mysterio finally come to blows, Mysterio rants about how his life has become a joke while considering himself a misunderstood artist and that this confrontation means so much for him. Daredevil shuts him up by describing his "art" as a mix of cruel butchery and outdated clichés. He truly hits a sensible spot by calling him an unoriginal human Xerox which sends Beck into a breakdown. Quentin then decides to shoot himself with a gun after saying that he stole that one from Kraven. This is my favorite Mysterio story because we see him both at his most despicable and his most desperate by showing how far he will go to ruin a person's life and how he would react if he knew that his death is coming.
I love Mysterio, he’s always been one of my favorite Spidey villains and his silly old fishbowl head is just great. He was really enjoyable as the main villain of Shattered Dimensions video game and I’m happy he’s finally made it to the big screen. I’m curious as to what his role is in the upcoming Spider-Man film. The trailers seem to be pushing him in a “heroic” light but I can’t help but feel suspicious knowing his role in the comics as a charlatan and, going back to his first appearance, a fake hero. I guess we’ll just have to see!
I honorably mention also the 2 introductions from the 2 main animated shows. From TAS, Mysterio tries to frame SpiderMan for crimes he commits, while also tring to defeat him, to prove himself as best suited as NY superhero. In my young age, that was one great scheme. The Spectacular versions is less complex and had no proper backstory, due to the early cancellation of the show. Yet his presence and Charisma remain untouched to me: as the self proclaimed master of Arcana Arts, he despises any sort of technology (rrrrrrright) and all of his "spells" are anounced by an ancient latin spocken formula. That's So cool.
I know it isn't a Spider-Man comic, but I honestly liked Mysterio's role in the Daredevil: Guardian Devil arc. Might check some of these out if I can, though.
As a guy who studied film and TV, I kinda have to love Mysterio. Probably my third favourite Spider-Man villain. I say probably because The Spot may be my second favourite depending on whether or not Boomerang counts as a Spider-Man villain since he first appeared as a Hulk villain.... Boomerang is my favourite super-villain of all time.... I am not joking.
This was another pleasant surprise Rogues! But then again, not really. Beck is your favourite Spidey rogues so of course you would make a list for him. And what a great list it is. I know Mysterioso woukd be in here. I know Dan Slott gets loads of criticism, but he can write good stories when he wants to and the Mysterio gauntlet story is one if the best. If you want another Mysterio reccomendation, I suggest picking up dead man Logan once it is collected in trade. It features Beck in a major role and portrays him as a sympathetic, but cunning rogue.
Dan Slott is a pretty underrated Spidey writer. His run is a bit too long yes, but he really knew how to write the Spidey rogues. His versions of Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Rhino, Vulture, Lizard, Hobgoblin, and Scorpion were all really threatening and entertaining. He’s way better than Nick Spencer in my opinion. Dead Man Logan is actually good? I haven’t gotten around to reading it but now I’m curious.
Good video, I love to learn more about characters and good stories. Mysterio looks amazing in Far From Home I hope he appears in Insomniac's Spider-Man 2
The Guardian Devil from Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada, Daredevil issues 1-6 leading to Lark and Bendis and Brubaker runs... my favorite Mysterio comic book!
I have a theory about Mysterio and Nick Fury's roles in the upcoming movie. The theory is that Mysterio claiming to be a hero from another dimension is just one elaborate hoax he's making up. In reality he's just a guy who is hired by the Chameleon to act as a "hero from another dimension" and to create and then "fight" the Elementals in order to gain Peter's trust. As for Nick Fury, he is actually the Chameleon in disguise and is wanting revenge on Peter for previously defeating him and locking him up, as mentioned by Mac Gargan in the mid-credits scene. So both Mysterio and Chameleon are working together to defeat Spider-Man.
Good list. While I have a lot of grievances with Dan Slott's Spider-Man run, I loved how he wrote Mysterio as a DGAF troll who'll rob you while making awful jokes.
Mysterio is my favourite Spider-Man villain. I'm very excited to finally see him on the big screen, especially since his design looks so great! I just really hope they don't screw up his character, since the plot for Far From Home looks a little predictable as far as Mysterio stories go, so I have a bad feeling they may try to throw in some unnecessary twist. Then again most audiences probably arent that familiar with Mysterio stories and how they go, so who knows, maybe they'll keep the usual plot. I do also hope they do some cool mind screwy imagery with having him as the main villain, there is no excuse for this not to be the most extravagant and dramatic Spider-Man movie there has ever been.
My favorite Mysterio story id Spider-men mainly because it's my favorite Spider-man comic (well really favorite comic in general ) and he is the main villain. Having the Ultimate Mysterio be a robot comtroled by 616 mysterio is the kind of clever reinvention of classic rogues that the Ultimate universe does well and a good twist. Also I like the idea that mysterio kinda uses the Ultimate universe as his playground.p and ultimately he kinda gets karmatic jusice for playing with something dangerous like interdimensional travel.
Apparently the number 4 on this list is a tie-in to inferno event going on in x-men comics, where a bunch of demons end up in the Marvel universe, it’s also the arc that brings demo-goblin into the fold.
You should do a Forgotten Super Heroes episode on Angle Man. He’s a Batman villain that I have seen pop up, but I legit have no clue who this guy is. I like his gimmick though.
J.M.DeMatties' version of Mystery also shows the similarities between Spider-Man and Mysterio. Spider-Man is everything Peter wants to be, really strong, snarky and funny. Mystery is everything Beck wants to be. He wants to feel powerful, and loves special effects, as Mysterio, he can be powerful and use his love for special effects. Both Peter's and Beck's alter ego's allow them to be what they want to be. Spider-Man also makes Peter's life worse, and Mystery made Beck's life worse, with him ruining Beck's chances of having a normal life.
@Mr. Rogues Would you consider doing a video like that for other Spidey villains? I’d suggest the Scorpion and recommend an AMAZING story with him called “Sweet Charity”. If you haven’t read it already: it is pure gold. It envolves Jameson and the web head camping together and Scorpion hunting them down.
I was sort of anticipating a list like this soon. ;) The weird thing about Mysterio is that, like MANY Spider-Man villains, I haven't actually read too many stories with him. I actually forgot (yeah, FORGOT, I feel genuinely ashamed) to check out Super Sam's list, and I'll hopefully do so tomorrow. (I can't right now, as I type this.) I suspect between you and he I'll have plenty of reading material to go off of. As it stands, I've read three of your five picks: The Return of the Burglar, Spider-Man Goes Mad, and As Dreams Are Made On (which I agree on as number one). I love all three, though I'd probably put "Return of the Burglar" at second place for me, at least among those ones. Again, I really need to read more with this guy. XD I am VERY much looking forward to Far From Home. Actually, Mysterio is the main reason I want to see the film. LOL
Yeah, he seems to be most people's main reason for wanting to see that movie lol... :P They've got a great costume design and a good actor, so hopefully they don't disappoint us. And I'd love to see JJ do a top 10 Goblin stories over at his DeviantArt ;)

Mysterio deserves a story arc like Kraven's Last Stand or The Killing Joke Spider Man's writers need to give Norman Osborne a rest for awhile and give the spot light to other villains. Just like DO needs to do for Batman's Rogues other than the Joker.
Beck needs to keep the fishbowl on at all the time. The helmet may be goofy, but without it, he basically looks like a thug version of Moe Howard from the 3 stooges.
Apparently in the new Spider man film Mysterio is an anti-hero and a person from an alternate universe. Judging by Mysterio’s character, I think it’s gonna turn out to be one of Mysterio’s other mind-bending tricks and he’s just a guy who uses special effects, tricking our heroes
Well Your number 5 and two are the only ones on the list I've read, but I'd have to put them in the top five as well. How to fill out the other lots is a fun question. Your CGI plotline is an interesting idea. But your wrong about screens. Mysterio would use practical effects more than anything else, but he'd lump cgi in with the holograms in your second pick, I feel. Another story I'm surprised they never used would be one where he uses a collection of villians from the movies. Spidey gets attacked by foes from several different genres, and tries to get autograph from some of them.
I saw Spiderman: Far From Home yesterday with my Dad, it was amazing. Great effects, great story, great characters, it was all great. My favorite part of the film was Mysterio, his look, his performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, his characterisation, his motivation, just a great Marvel villain, especially with the ending, I won't spoil it but it will hopefully cause a rise in Mysterio stories. Did you see it, tell me your thoughts on the film.
Mysterio using practical effect and despising CGI? What?? Am I the only one who never heard of that? I thought he was a master of Illusion, using holograms all the time, which is basically CGI projected into thin air instead of a screen. Practical machines and acting has always felt to me like they came 2nd and 3rd in terms of use to him, simply because being able to project literally ANYTHING is more convenient for both him and the writers, although he's sometimes able to use those talents to even better effect than his main shtick. Even his #2 on this list, Spider-Man Goes Mad, is mostly holograms SUPPORTED by the practical effects of a trick room. If anything, I felt Mysterio was all about CGI before it even existed in the real world. I was unsure if it was because I was more familiar with adaptations of Mysterio rather than the original, but honestly, even there his main MO seems to be illusions first, supported by acting and inventing. If anything, his movie version seems like exactly in line with the characters. Even better, it makes sense that the movie adaptation of him would acknowledge the large crew he'd have to achieve such a level of realism in his illusions, with Beck "merely" being a director and actor in his cons.
I feel like JM Demateiss is one of the most consistently amazing comic book writers (Kraven’s last hunt, number 1 on this list, number 2 on two-face’s list) but it seems like he doesn’t write all that many stories :/
He was also number 1 on my Joker and Red Skull lists. Actually, he wrote a fair ammount of comics back in the 80s and 90s, but perhaps not so much anymore.
god wouldn't it be a cool twist that all these weird changes in far from home are just another con and mysterio IS just some special effects asshole gaslighting everyone for some sor tof bizarre scheme?
“He doesn’t just punch him like Rhino or shocks him like Electro”
*cries in Herman Shultz*
I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the design in the upcoming film

Top 5 Green Goblin Stories?
Real Super Sam already made a top 5 for Goblin. Rogues isn't a big goblin fan.
I like McFarlane's work too. Dude loved his capes, and his characters hands and feet were proportional as opposed to non artists like Liefeld.
plus the way he drew WEBS were cool

Mysterio also happens to be one of my favorite Spider-Man villains! Great video as always, Rogues.

That would've make so much more sense than to have Fury be an incompetent Skrull.
Great list! The Webspinners story was the perfect choice for one.
Good list. While I have a lot of grievances with Dan Slott's Spider-Man run, I loved how he wrote Mysterio as a DGAF troll who'll rob you while making awful jokes.

“Great Special Effects”
Thank you for the right wording.
Only Mysterio was a grear character, the others are stereotypes morons.

Does Quentin Beck look like Leonard Nimoy?

Mr. Rogues well if James Cameron's spider-man was made Nimoy should have be Mysterio

Thank you ! Thank you very much, dude !!! XD
How about a video about the DC Atomic Knights?
I am surprised hearing he's reason the old man logan story exists
When Spiderman far from home comes out will you do a movie review.
So Mysterio was there in the second issue where he was working for the tinker

I don’t really like that comic it’s not the crime Becca loves It’s the excitement.
Have you ever thought about making a top 5 list of the best stories by JM?
Mr. Rogues oh yeah I forgot about those too
