      Gotta go Scorpion. There's so many great ones, but the Scorpion needs for people in his corner. I think the best way to put it is that he was venom before venom, the superior spider-man before superior spider-man. He was one of the first dark mirrors of Spider-man. J. Jonah Jameson created him because scorpions are natural predators of spiders. He's stronger than Spider-man, faster, he can climb walls, he even had a scorpion sense a couple times. It's no wonder why he eventually became venom.

      I kinda see what he means but with all respect to the great and late Stan Lee
      I see Goblin as "the opposite" of Spider-Man. (Peter Parker is a genuinely good and humble person with some minimal flaws and a good, albeit poor, upbringing, who has powers he didn't want forced on him and he chose to use those powers for the benefit of others due to a moral obligation and a lesson taught by his Uncle Ben soon before his death, making it act almost as if it were his final wish. And of course, Peter is a good enough person that even when his heroism goes unrewarded, or even messes with his personal life, 99 times out of 100 he will remain steadfast to Uncle Bens advice and uphold the morals that Spider-Man represents. While Norman Osborn is a victim of child abuse who grew to become an emotionally abusive father and a corrupt businessman with a vast fortune, and the more power he got the more power he craved, so much so that he purposely gave himself powers to match Spider-Mans (not with Spider-Man in mind), sometimes at the cost of his sanity and sometimes already being insane and well adjusted to fitting in with society. His Goblin persona allows him to show the most evil parts of himself. And he first became the Goblin to take over the criminal empire of New York and attain more power and wealth. Green Goblin stands in opposition of everything Spider-Man stands for. Good and bad, dark and light, up and down, wrong and right.
      Doctor Octopus acts as someone who can also easily defeat Spider-Man in a fight, but is his intellectual equal/superior (depending on how smart Peter really is, idk)
      Doctors Octopus is Spider-Mans **smartest** foe in my book. And that MEANS SOMETHING.
      (Also, if you're wondering my thoughts on Venom, Venom is the dark reflection of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the mirror. What Spider-Man would have become if he were not so noble.)

    I love Venom because he was never really a villain. He was a Villian purely to Spider-Man. His entire existence was focused around making Peter Parker suffer, even at the cost of those around him. He doesn’t really have higher goals or motivations outside of tormenting Pete. He seems evil because all our original interactions with him are through the Spider-Man lense. Other than that, he’s fine

    I think Lizard is INCREDIBLY underrated and deserves to be in the discussion for at least the top four. Not only is he by far one of spidey's strongest opponents outside of the symbiote bros, but he's also got that personal connection with Curt Connors being his friend, making him more of a tragic character. Such a shame he's been in nothing good recently, to the point that nobody really cares about him anymore, which is a bigger tragedy than Curt Conner's predicament.

      Lizard is just not as versatile as other spidey villains, like his arc always end with him cured and some kind of trauma from the stuff he did while transformed so if he gets overused he can become stale really quick

    • @AwesomeMooseSmile
      @AwesomeMooseSmile 2 месяца назад +2

      @JH0207 that's something you can say for a lot of other great villains like Mr Freeze, Harley Quinn, and possibly even Venom. Like some of those villains, I think there's still room for potential growth if the writers would just stick to something like how he could overall evolve or mutate to be more sentient and be a potential ally, but other potential consequences could derive from that. Also, because he's been pretty underutilized in media recently, the chances of him becoming stale quick is lower since they'd rather use other villains instead.

    • @JH0207
      @JH0207 2 месяца назад

      @@AwesomeMooseSmile When I was writing the original comment, I was initially gonna draw a comparison to Mr. Freeze and Bane specifically. I feel both of those guys have been victims of having one character defining story and writers don’t really know what to do with them after. I honestly think Lizard should get killed off or shelved for a long time but in a super tragic way. Maybe the mutation completely takes over and we watch as Curt gradually loses what little humanity he has left and he goes full animal (potentially kills a bunch of people) so he has to get locked up for a while in like a cage at the raft and if the writers wanna start using him again they can explore the guilt Curt is punished with in like a super tragic one shot. Or they could make him an anti hero hulk like figure who has some venom adjacent lethality, which could put him at odds with other NYC heroes

    • @GreaterGrievobeast55
      @GreaterGrievobeast55 Месяц назад

      @@JH0207I kinda feel like SHED abd the following story is pretty much the story you're describing. Kurt lizard off goes off the deep end and Kills his son, then evolves into a much more powerful form that cannot just control reptiles but make regular humans act on their base animalistic impulses. Spidermans fairly outmatched and can't properly cure him but actually males the lizard ego start to feel shame for killing Connors kid and he retreats into obscurity.
      It's a really awesome story not just because of how much of an imposing threat lizard's become, but it also forces spiderman and the reader to face this question about the nature of people and what we'e capable of. It makes the lizard ego more than this condition Connors is afflicted with, but this sentient personification of atavism.
      Though in any case, perhaps they continued using the lizard in stories far too soon after that one? I don't think it's as perilous of a writing matter as it've been made to be. So long as the Lizard persona if left smart enough ti make a diverse set of schemes, and Isn't be able to be turned back into Connors in the convenience of an issue I think there's plenty of potential of confronting him in fights and in moral dihlemas.

    Green Goblin: Arch Enemy (Norman Osborn is the greatest enemy to Peter Parker and has caused more personal trauma to him than any other villain. Their battles are always personal.)

    Green Goblin is easily the best Spider-Man villain. Take Joker's crazy, Reverse-Flash's pettiness and Lex Luthor's money and combine into one. It's just entertaining to what all the crazy shit Green Goblin comes up with to make Pete's life worse. Plus, if a writer gets stuck in the writer's block or don't know how to finish a storyline (see Clone Saga). It's easy to just say Norman did. He hooked up with Harry's girlfriend and in a "What If" story unintentionally unalived himself by erasing his abusive father from history.
    Jackal is also a great villain, albeit a very confusing one.

    Alot of people considered The Death of Gwen as the End of the Silver Age and not necessarily the Bronze age. However, it will always stand as a great and tragic moment in comics. Damn Norman! Also Norm being behind the clone saga was bogus. Even the original( when getting fired) writer urged the staff to not blame Norman...which Marvel blamed anyway. Damn exec's...

    Green Goblin will always be my favorite Spidey nemesis because... I freaking love goblins. So I'm very partial but inbetween classic issue, Dafoe performance and Ultimate Green Goblin who I thought was lame until I read the comics to discover a terrifying Villain... GG is kind of legit. Spectacular Spider-Man Goblin was to me the only one who really managed to find a sweet spot where his design feel not too ridiculous. It's hard to pin down his character inbetween personnality disorder or master manipulator the line got blurred but it kind of add to the mystique.
    Problem is that it's very hard to make the "whodunit" aspect of this character that was one of his original appeal nowadays, Spectacular is the only medium where they really got mileage out of this mistery appart from the comics.
    It's kind of lame they have done the goblin storyline so many times in the comics with a new goblin everytime they want to lean in the "whodunit" aspect again. Most of later goblin actually have better design than the original yet they feel redundant appart from Harry.

    The Green Goblin = The Arch Nemesis. The complete opposite of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
    Venom = The rival turned "Evil Spider-Man" turned friendly rival
    Eddie brock was his work rival
    Then Venom as a villain acted as a dark reflection of Spider-Man in the mirror, what he would have become if he were evil.
    Then as an Anti-Hero Venom tries to beat Spider-Man at his own game
    Venom is also harder to defeat than the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus put together.
    Doctor Octopus = the smartest foe of Spider-Man. His intellectual superior and is harder to defeat in a fight that most of Spider-Mans rogues gallery. Spider-Man has trouble out-thinking another genius which makes stories with him as the villain more engaging.

    • @luisalejandrolopezbuendia9686
      @luisalejandrolopezbuendia9686 3 месяца назад

      Eddie was never his work rival, that's something the 90s show pulled out of its ass like pretty much everything involving the symbiote making Peter evil and stronger. Eddie never met Peter prior to becoming Venom, hell, he never even met him as Spider-Man either. He fits the anti-Peter role because unlike Peter, who takes responsability to heart and accepts his mistakes and tries to be better, Eddie just screwed up at his job, got fired and decided to blame all his issues to someone else instead of accepting that he screwed up, that's it. He is the mirror in the sense that unlike Peter, he truly is responsible for his own wrongs but instead of owning up to them, he chose to blame literally someone that has never even met him. He was honestly kind of lackluster and pathetic at times during his time as a supervillain and was mostly just an annoyance manchild to Peter rather than a rival.
      Also, no Otto isn't Peter's smartest foe. Norman is, he himself has been outsmarted and outdoned by Norman in terms of intellect that it's pretty much untrue to say that Otto is Peter's smartest enemy. Also no, Peter doesn't have trouble with outsmarting geniuses, he has outsmarted geniuses that pick a bone with Reed Richards himself since he was 15. And while Otto is indeed an actual itellectual rival to Peter, Otto himself has admitted that Peter is objectively superior to him in every way, intellect included. That was actually the whole point of Superior to begin with
      All the while, Norman is just objectively Peter's greatest enemy. No one has hurt Pter like Norman, no one has challenged his moral, intellect more than Norman, no one has pushed Peter as much as Norman and no one has been shown to be as evil as Norman. Even Carnaged made a perfect bond with Norman because of how evil he is

    The comics have framed Goblin as Peter's greatest adversary with Doc right behind him and venom right after that. Venom is the most beloved by far, but has danced with the anti hero gimmick for too long to be considered his greatest villian.
    Goblin on the other hand is such a perfect foil to peter that in the superior spider man run a comic run focused on when doc took over Peter's body, he literally relinquished it back to Peter's control because goblin was too crazy and realized the only one who could stop goblin was Spiderman.

    You're completely forgetting that Spider-Man's creator, Steve Ditko, established Doctor Octopus as his main villain.
    If This Be My Destiny, is Spider-Man's most important comicbook. That's the story that defined the character and cemented Otto's relationship with Peter for the years to come. Ock is Superior to Spidey, he's always one step ahead. He's also the leader and founder of the Sinister Six and the first villlain who overcame Peter easily and unmasked him. He's also responsible of the death of Liz Allen's brother, which caused Peter and her to part ways and caused him to reflect on Ben's words for the first time.

    Maybe not his apex enemy, but my favorite is Kraven. As a kid, DeMatteis and Zeck really sucked me into the character and he has been a favorite ever since. In my book, a close second is early Venom (Michelinie/McFarlane - Larsen). That version of the character is just downright dark and scary. I absolutely agree that the Superior Spider-Man storyline propels Doc Ock to the top of the list. I remember during that two year run, so many people were pissed off. Fans at the LCS all talking about how they ruined SpiderMan. It was so weird but this story, and how it played out, truly affected people (and not just the fans). There were articles in the newspapers about it. Looking back now, this was a very compelling story by Dan Slott (only thing he has done that I really like) and an excellent use of Doc Ock’s character, which cements him at the top of the food chain, regarding spider foes.

Peter's core is power used responsibly, and that power itself comes with responsibilities. Norman Osborn represents power used irresponsibly in everything he does. I mean everything Norman does with his power and wealth is done just because he can, not because he should or because it helps him. He does stuff just to prove he can.
