I'd classify it more as a rejection song, he lowkey throws some subtle shade at "too sweet morning person" there. Like he said "you're sweet as a grape but I'd rather have whiskey, you can ferment in a barrel for 12 years maybe I'd like you better then".
Hozier is one of the best lyricist out there, his music is so romantic and beautiful and no one writes music like he does, I have no doubt you’ve heard him before at least with his song take me to church, too sweet tho is definitely one of my favs
The lines about “pretty as a vine, sweet as a grape” absolutely melt me. So good.
I definitely recommend checking out more songs from him! this song is the most radio friendly and simple of his songs which is probably why it went viral (it's his second song in his career that got extremely massive, first being "take me to church" in 2013). he's one of the best lyricists I've ever seen and his music is truly magical. I could recommend "take me to church", "eat your young", "nina cried power", "cherry wine", "franchesca" etc.
It's a rejection song, the girl is too sweet for him, he wants her to be more bitter or like him. Hence whiskey / coffee etc. Hoziers last album was a concept album about the 9 circles of hell (unreal unearth, worth reacting to) and dantes inferno and this fell into the circle of gluttony but didn't make the album and was released afterwards. The narrator has a fast living lifestyle and he maybe wants the girl to loosen up if they can ever be together. Its more a story then a biopic of the artist themselves.
