I think he says “you treat your mouth as if it’s Heaven’s gate” because only good things can get in, “the rest of you like you’re the TSA” because they’re very careful about what gets through it. The girl he’s describing makes only really healthy decisions about what she eats and what she does, which is the crux of why he’s saying they’re not compatible, because he likes drinking whiskey and staying up too late and doesn’t really care about longevity as much as he does enjoying the little time he has alive. She’s literally too good for his taste - too sweet.

YES HOZIER!!!!! I definitely agree, he's got one of the best voices in radio today and his songwriting is just as good. If you want to check out more, his last album is SPECTACULAR, best lyrics and vocals he's ever done IMO. He really uses his whole entire range in Who We Are, that song blows me away every time
He is absolutely one of the best. His songwriting always gets me. He is a master of a turning of a phrase and knows how to compose in a way that makes the song just stick into you.
If you'd like to check out more Hozier I cannot recommend his song Francesca more highly. Since it was released last year it has become my favorite love song ever recorded 😍 It has a number of REALLY good live recordings as well where he shows off his ability to switch vocal 'modes' on a whim even more. It's really spectacular.
This is one of the best songs I've ever heard. No kidding. It's been stuck in my head for weeks now. Not only is the melody just so catchy.... the lyrics are SO cool, and the sound is so unique. Love this one. Thanks for the vocal analysis.
This song has been my new obsession! So excited for this video! Fun fact: in one of his posts about the song, he said it’s partially inspired by an Irish phrase that can describe someone as “too sweet to be savory.”
My reading of the TSA line is that everything is closely monitored and controlled, whereas he drinks, smokes and just dgaf... Her body is a temple (ref. Heaven's gate), his is a theme park! 😂
Being careful just means different things to some. For example, I'm more frightened of distracted driving than I am of drunk driving. Not all of my family and friends agree with me on that, but then...all of their crashes have been bc of distraction...and none of them drink...
Now you have to do his song Blood Upon the Snow! End credits song for God of War Ragnarok. I’d recommend a playthrough beforehand but that’s a 50+ hour commitment 😂
I'm sooooo happy you reacted to Hozier!!! My daughter is using his song "Like Real People Do" for her wedding song (first dance) and an acoustic music only version to walk down the aisle to. I absolutely LOVE this artist! Please check out more. :)
I saw him live last year and hearing him sing live was so mesmerising! His voice sounds soo good live and has a certain power that I only felt in the concert hall❤
how i interpreted "you treat your mouth as if it's haven gate" is like someone who refuses to put junk, or anything "too sinful" in their mouth. treating it like a temple like you said. and the "the rest of you like you're the tsa" as in they're being just as strict with the rest of their body's "security". the symbolism/metaphors in this song slap almost harder than the bass IMO. i love love love this kind of imagery in music. truly a wordsmith and a master of his craft. and that verse that comes after, tells me this isn't someone they want to outright reject from their life. they're just someone who needs to "lose a little of their sweetness" to be palatable. cause they go on to say "babe don't get me wrong, you're as bright as the morning, as soft as the rain, pretty as a vine, as sweet as a grape", but he's saying he doesn't want the grapes, he wants the wine!. "if you can sit in a barrel," THEN "maybe I'll wait" but until then they're going to "take my whisky neat, my coffee black, and my bed at 3" i.e. I'll enjoy the bitter things in life that are real/more palatable to me. this song blew me away. i spent 6+ hours listening to it so I can try and sing It for karaoke asap.
I just love his voice, story telling, and sense for flow, drive, and rhythm. Both Unreal Unearth and Wasteland Baby are incredible albums worth listening to. If you want a treat to analyze, I highly recommend his live session of De Selby (1) and De Selby (2) - including a treat of Irish accent to have a linguistic nerd-out regarding dialects and their specific phonations :)
I, Carrion is one of his best IMO! His voice combined with the lyrics and the music of that song sounds so timeless. Francesca is amazing but I Carrion truly sounds like an ancient love story. And the way he injects the emotions into it - the love, desperation, and acceptance. I could talk about it all day long
The lyric videos visuals are there because this song was written for his album Unreal Unearth! The aesthetic of that album was all dirt and stuff like that. It's one of my favorite albums of all time, AMAZING listen, highly recommend
@foxyybfly He has done some pretty in depth interviews for this album cycle and fans have made some very comprehensive album breakdowns here on YT, those sources might be more illuminating for you
The Songs ICarrion and Butchered Tongue are really deep. Had to google a bit on both. Butchered Tongue in particular is a really rough topic to covet in a song
Unreal Unearth is supposed to follow the journey of Dante's Inferno, which is why the dirt/worms sort of focus. De Selby 1 and 2 are based on a book called The Policeman, and introduces it, then you go through the different circles of hell. There is a LOT of lore/lyrics digging out there, if you look!
PLEEEASE delve deeper into the Hozier catalog! An absolute gold mine. Literally everything on Unreal Unearth… so excited to see the analysis to his works!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
I sincerely appreciate the fact you picked a lyric video. Being deaf, I normally use my live captions from my iPhone or iPad. But the subtitles already there makes it nice once in a while. You don’t have to do all lyrics videos. I have ways to use my captions but once in a great while, it’s nice lol.
He was in a choir called Anúna before he went solo and they do La Chanson De Mardi Gras which features him solo. There is a live video performance of it as well.
Waaaaaait, Anúna as in part-of-the-first-riverdance-performance-at-Eurovision Anúna? So cool! (Obvs he’s too young to have been part of *that* performance, though)
I was obsessed with Take Me to Church and this latest song is stuck in my head... absolutely brilliant with an infectious bass line. And so love your analysis! Thank you!
I have now watched a few videos of yours, and your child-like excitement at some elements of the song, and how you get giddy when you enjoy something, is SOOOOOO infectious! I love the way you react and review these songs. Well done, absolutely here for this type of joy in my life!!
The way you descibred what makes his voice so gorgeous is so accurate - it's that control between light and airy and condensed across his whole range. Plus, lyrics, man does lyrics
So, although I am new to this channel, I have become accustomed to @The Charismatic Voice being excited, happy, joyous, etc when it comes to music. Of all the videos of Elizabeth's that I have seen so far, this is by far the best reaction I have seen from her. Wow, she was so happy listening to this. You can see this all through the video. Elizabeth, you are making me appreciate music on a whole different level. Thank you so much. I promise to try to appreciate music at a deeper level than I have done so far. I tend to go with emotions - head banging moment, melancholy moment, etc. There is so much more to appreciate that I hadn't realised until I watched you. I hope that you, your family, friends, and all of your fans have a wonderful day.
I had not heard this song before but greatly enjoyed it. Always fun to be at the premiere for each new video on this channel. Elizabeth and her husband Kirk make the chat great fun. Premieres are every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, starting at 11 AM EDT. I try to attend each one, so I get introduced to many new artists.
I love Hozier so much, he can't make a bad song, and this one has been stuck in my head ever since it's release. I'm finally going to see him in Aug!! Been waiting 10 years!!! More please!
You neeeeeed to hear De Selby part 1 & 2, they are technically two songs but flow right into each other. You are gonna loveeee every moment of it! So glad you’re getting into Hozier!!
What a voice!!! I loved 'Take me to Church' and didn't think it could get much better from that, then his collaboration with Meduza with "Tell it to my Heart' was next level ... BUT ... 'Too Sweet' is OUT OF THIS WORLD good! I'm very proud of this fellow Irishman!
Only discovered your channel yesterday and while some of the technical terms used go over my head, your enthusiasm is delightful 😊 Outstanding track from one of our finest musicians 🇮🇪👏
Not sure if you've heard much from Cold, but the song Quiet Now puts me in tears when I hear it. Scooter Ward is such a beautifully tragic soul and it shines through his performance. 10 out of 10 would highly recommend.
I heard this on the radio yesterday for the first time, and while I couldn't pay full attention cus I was driving I did think it was great. Now I'm able to listen to it properly for the first time right along with you and I LOOOOOOVEEE it!! I've loved Hozier for years and this just gave me chills! (yes I have a fever right now, but that is not the point)
The song seems to be about a partner (or ex) who is obsessed with health/diet, longevity, structure/discipline, and a kind of purity, whereas he says he wants it gritty, chaotic, anything goes, carefree, spontaneous, and darker. He's the "bad boy" and shes the "good girl".
I’d argue it’s more complex than ‘bad boy’ ‘good girl.’ More along the lines of ‘I’d rather interact with the world as it/I am, rather than expressing toxic positivity and trying to optimize my life.’ There’s an article called ‘i found the tenth circle of hell’ and it’s a great breakdown of the song and the general public’s interpretation of it.
@@MordredsGirl Well I agree for the most part, which is why that came at the end and was "quoted". But one could argue that it is the ego part of us that gets in the way of self improvement. We need a balance between accepting (and being conscious) our shadow and ourselves, warts and all, while also trying to improve/evolve/grow. These "characters" in the song are two necessary, opposite sides of the same coin. Hozier is Pisces and the lass is Virgo. They are attracted to each other precisely because they are not whole people and each has what the other lacks and what balances/complements each other. But opposites both can attract _and_ repel at different times, just like opposite signs in synastric astrology. It's this dance of push pull and integration-polarization that happens. In real life, Hozier seems to be obsessed with sex, and very well may be a sex addict. That is a very limiting pattern to be stuck in. His ego will tell him that it is ok, because it is what he enjoys, meanwhile that quiet, still, inner voice that comes from his Spirit/Expanded self may be whispering, "you need to change this, to heal, you're holding us/you back".
I did a really cool Hozier collab analysis over on Patreon, but this will be the first analysis I've posted on RUclips. I truly LOVE his voice (obviously since I love "Take Me To Church" so much) so we'll see if this goes anywhere!
Noah Kahan is really killing it vocally now. And, he and Hozier are good buds and frequent collaborators. Really some of the best music being released. I’m so happy I watched Elizabeth’s reaction before the song set up in my head. Every listening I’ll be reveling in his nuances.
I thought this is the first time ive heard of this band but after checking out "Take Me To Church" I have definitely heard them before.. I checked out "Too Sweet" it is a very good song but now we need a metal cover of it.

This is one of those songs (and reaction/analysis videos) that I'm really glad I watched/listened to -- I didn't really think the song is very interesting, but the Charismatic Voice's analysis has pointed out a lot of things about the musical/vocal performance that ARE quite interesting, and which made me find the song as a whole more interesting! Thanks, Elizabeth!
I think the whole TSA verse refers to how she's a health buff since the previous line he asks, "who wants to live forever, babe?" Heaven's gate is a restrictive diet, the rest of the body like the TSA, feels like someone who has a very heavy regimen, like a very strict scheduled wellness routine. It tracks with the previous verses.
Huh. Maybe I just need to get my mind out of the gutter, but... Those phrases sound to me like he's in a relationship with someone who will engage in fellatio but refuses to go further, with the "TSA" blocking access. And a completely opposite, but similarly oriented interpretation, is that in the same way the TSA is routinely touching people in highly intimate ways, so too is her body touching his in highly intimate ways. I think the "who wants to live forever babe" line is more a conclusion of the earlier thoughts, than leading into the next.
@@harvey66616 he does a lot of innuendo in his work but this feels like the "something meaty for the main course" misinterpretation that spawned "Moment's Silence" because there's no other lines that support the spicy interpretation. I think the whispered, intimate tone of how he sings it owes more to it being a very intimate & truthful possibly hurtful critique of her personality. Maybe he purposefully made it seem like he's referencing sex to hurt less instead of a dig about her as a person. I feel like in the song it implies he's tired of her clingy, cloying & restrictive ways (she probably wants him to check in regularly while he's at work). Goes with the grapevine imagery. Like she needs rigid support & schedule to thrive and she's suffocating him like a wild vine does to a tree.
Singing this in a crowd with tens of thousands of people at his concert really does show you that driving energy. Everyone was just WAITING for that "neat" and we were all singing along and dancing. He's such an amazing artist. Highly underrated... One of the best song-writers out there in my opinion. My daughter and I always say Hozier doesn't write songs. He writes poetry with musical accompaniments.

Most underestimated lyric in this song IMO: "Pretty as a vine, sweet as a grape, if you can sit in a barrel, maybe I'll wait"
I... just got it. I didn't the barrel line until just now. Wine. He's saying if she ferments (matures) into Wine, he'll be there.

This is one of the best songs I've ever heard. No kidding. It's been stuck in my head for weeks now. Not only is the melody just so catchy.... the lyrics are SO cool, and the sound is so unique. Love this one. Thanks for the vocal analysis.
Hozier has become my favorite singer. This is my anytime voice. It instantly shifts my mood ❤
Thank you for this. This man is a brilliant musician, vocalist, songwriter, poet. Obsessed! I suggest you take a deeper look at him.
Hozier is one of my all time favorite artists! Thank you so much for analyzing his music! 💛
I agree. Basically just two ways of saying she is very careful about what she eats/drinks/puts in her body, as opposed to him.
Being careful just means different things to some. For example, I'm more frightened of distracted driving than I am of drunk driving. Not all of my family and friends agree with me on that, but then...all of their crashes have been bc of distraction...and none of them drink...
I think the line about "heavens gate" may possibly be referencing the cult too??
Now you have to do his song Blood Upon the Snow! End credits song for God of War Ragnarok. I’d recommend a playthrough beforehand but that’s a 50+ hour commitment 😂
The song is amazing on its own, but yeah, after you have played through it is so much more tear jerking.
IDK if you’re seen the subway platform version of Take Me to Church
Or, “It will Come Back” live sessions version.
Both are a absolutely amazing
Ooh! I need to dig through her catalog to see if she responded to that, because you can really see his form in the subway video!
seconding this!
how i interpreted "you treat your mouth as if it's haven gate" is like someone who refuses to put junk, or anything "too sinful" in their mouth. treating it like a temple like you said. and the "the rest of you like you're the tsa" as in they're being just as strict with the rest of their body's "security". the symbolism/metaphors in this song slap almost harder than the bass IMO. i love love love this kind of imagery in music. truly a wordsmith and a master of his craft. and that verse that comes after, tells me this isn't someone they want to outright reject from their life. they're just someone who needs to "lose a little of their sweetness" to be palatable. cause they go on to say "babe don't get me wrong, you're as bright as the morning, as soft as the rain, pretty as a vine, as sweet as a grape", but he's saying he doesn't want the grapes, he wants the wine!.
"Who We Are" and "I, Icarion" are two of my absolute favorites of his songs rn I definitely recommend listening to them!
I am just so happy you reacted to this. Hozier is the best!
Total genius!! Vocal perfection!!! I LOVE the Bass, but OMG his vocal control is awesome - what a beautiful song! One of best songs of all time!!!
Well she didn't have a choice with this one as they only released the video version yesterday..
@@gmcm7432yes the very same
I've tried looking for that video a few times recently but have found it gone from RUclips. It was one of my favorites.
Yeah Anuna has been around forever lol
this is what it looks like to be a real fan. nice to see someone passionate about an artist's work without obsessing over their life.
Wow. This is awesome. I agree with everything you say. I was hooked instantly with that baseline. Thank you for introducing this to me. You rock
I was obsessed with Take Me to Church and this latest song is stuck in my head... absolutely brilliant with an infectious bass line. And so love your analysis! Thank you!
Arsonist’s Lullaby has to be your next Hozier song. One of my all time favorites from Hozier.
It iis indeed one of my favs❤❤❤
I have now watched a few videos of yours, and your child-like excitement at some elements of the song, and how you get giddy when you enjoy something, is SOOOOOO infectious! I love the way you react and review these songs. Well done, absolutely here for this type of joy in my life!!
I saw him last night! The bass was even more “gnarly” live.
I am so thrilled that you finally analyzed Hozier! His voice has already become one of my all-time favorites.
Arsonist's Lullaby, In A Week, and It Will Come Back. His voice... just soooooo amazing.
I saw an interview with Hozier and he said that this comes from a saying back home “You’re too sweet to be savory.” Such a great song!
Holy 1970s Batman! That sound was so perfect for the decade. Love this! Elizabeth strikes again! I think I wan to hear more Hozier...
Thanks for analyzing this one, I can't get enough of this song.
Ive been obsessed with the entire album. Butchered tongue is amazing!
You neeeeeed to hear De Selby part 1 & 2, they are technically two songs but flow right into each other. You are gonna loveeee every moment of it! So glad you’re getting into Hozier!!
One of the best lyricist of our time and it’s so underrated
Nope. Not underrated. Sold out everywhere he plays -stadiums!-all over the world.
Only discovered your channel yesterday and while some of the technical terms used go over my head, your enthusiasm is delightful 😊
Outstanding track from one of our finest musicians 🇮🇪👏
Yes yes yes!!!!! Please react to more Hozier, I would love to know what you think of Francesca, particularly the Glastonbury live version 😊

I was down in the dumps, then I heard this song on the radio, got me feeling refreshed. It's such an amazing song, sung by an amazing artist.
Not sure if you've heard much from Cold, but the song Quiet Now puts me in tears when I hear it. Scooter Ward is such a beautifully tragic soul and it shines through his performance. 10 out of 10 would highly recommend.
You should definitely check out a lot of his older stuff and live performances, one of the most talented musicians of our time!
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
Yes! I LOVE QOTSA! "No One Knows", "Go With the Flow", "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Make It Wit Chu", so amazing songs.
Please!
@@t.b.m.b. QOTSA are my favorite band but there are better songs to show vocal skills for Josh Homme (or maybe "In the fade" with Mark Lanegan)
Someone is definitely in love with the artist Hozier 😊
YESSSSSS FINALLY
MORE HOZIER PLEASE!!
@@justinw1765 Did you throw your back out with that reach?
Whether you do a video for it or not, you absolutely have to listen to Hozier’s take on The Parting Glass. It’s only his voice, it’s chilling.
Yes. Hozier. You rock E. He has such a sweet voice. Maybe Northern Attitude with Noah Kahan(toughest ticket in showbiz right now) and Hozier next up?
I did a really cool Hozier collab analysis over on Patreon, but this will be the first analysis I've posted on RUclips. I truly LOVE his voice (obviously since I love "Take Me To Church" so much) so we'll see if this goes anywhere!
Noah Kahan is really killing it vocally now. And, he and Hozier are good buds and frequent collaborators. Really some of the best music being released. I’m so happy I watched Elizabeth’s reaction before the song set up in my head. Every listening I’ll be reveling in his nuances.
Northern Attitude is a wonderfully written and performed song 👍
I love how much she's enjoying the song and Andrew's voice. It's written all over her face.
I thought this is the first time ive heard of this band but after checking out "Take Me To Church" I have definitely heard them before.. I checked out "Too Sweet" it is a very good song but now we need a metal cover of it.
I would agree, but I think it's too soon for a cover?
@TheCharismaticVoice ok maybe not this early but we all know sooner or later dan vasc will find this song
Leo will be on it soon, I'm sure.
Not a band. Hozier is the artist's name ;)
He already did it. His metal version of this song is breathtaking ❤
I am Obsessed with hozier and I absolutely love your enthusiasm about this song!! The whole thing gives me chills honestly.
You should react to de selby (1&2)! One of my favs from hozier:)) dinner and diatribes is also amazing!
this is the channel i always am so eager to come back to every niw and then! your amazing reviews and breakdown of songs, the techniques, the appreciation of the artist is one of a kind. sending love to ya and your stunning family, Elizabeth! :)
There's an AMAZING live performance by Hozier and Bear McCreary at the Game awards for GoW: Ragnarok's soundtrack song "Blood Upon the Snow"
Also features Bear on a Hurdy Gurdy! (ruclips.net/video/qzcqvPneP0k/видео.html)
His voice is haunting.
This song has been stuck in my head since it came out, and watching you listen to it with such joy makes me happy in a way I didn't expect 😊
Awww. Man!!!!!! I’m gonna miss her again!!! I’m on the road for business appts.
Thats okay though. Even though I enjoy watching her live, she’s got so many videos for me to go through anyway.
Every Monday, Tuesday and Friday! I'm almost always in that live chat, so plenty of chances! ❤
@@TheCharismaticVoice true! However, I’m usually on the road on business travel! Some days I may get an opportunity to watch you live.
In any case, keep loving what you do! I really enjoy your channel. I may do some patreon requests in the near future but got a huge 5,000 to $7,000 HVAC I’m replacing. I’ll catch your videos. Later Elizabeth!
This man is amazing! I am totally with you. When he sings it’s seems effortless! I have been waiting since, “take me to church"! This was so worth it!
Check out "In a Week" off his first album with Karen Cowley. It's very raw and they're voices are great together.

I was about to comment this! Big second for NBT!
Real Love Song. I think Elizabeth would love it
I'm so excited to see you do Hozier again. ❤
Im going to see him this Tuesday! 😁
I've been waiting forever for you to show some Hozier, so many damn good songs and that voice...
Twenty one pilots please 🙏 Elizabeth
Singing this in a crowd with tens of thousands of people at his concert really does show you that driving energy. Everyone was just WAITING for that "neat" and we were all singing along and dancing. He's such an amazing artist. Highly underrated... One of the best song-writers out there in my opinion. My daughter and I always say Hozier doesn't write songs. He writes poetry with musical accompaniments.
The thing I love the most about her channel is how giddy she gets especially when it’s songs I enjoy too!
Thank you for this video review. I loooove this song ❤ You’re so expressive and smiley. It’s radiates 🙌 I had a big smile on my face the entire video ☺️🫶💕
Hozier doing Ireland proud 🇮🇪
I had not listened to this song suprisingly until i heard it live the other night. It was like the music grabbed me by the shirt and just pulled me in to it. Hard to explain really but it literally blew me away for those 4 minutes. Fantastic song.
You’re so stinkin’ cute Elizabeth, I just love watching you enjoy and break down music videos, it always puts a smile on my face…😊💜💜
I love watching professionals love him like we do. Clearly a fan
I first listened to this song at the time I was living in Portland, Oregon, and listening to it one more time really takes me back to Portland.
Omg this makes me sooo happyyyyy. Do more Hozier please!!
Had the pleasure of seeing him live twice although a few years apart. I am not of his generation slightly older 🙄 haha. The best live performer out there by far. Not just for his superb singing of his crafted lyrics, but his musicianship and his ability to surround himself with like minded gifted hard working artists and tour roadies. I hope you get the chance to go and see him you will love it :-)
I saw him live once and he was absolutely breathtaking in a very minimalistic way. One of my favorites ever since❤
I love this song so much. I’ve listened to it on repeat at least 5+ times straight.
Holy crap, thank you for this break down. Im getting ready to do a cover of this song and I have been trying to understand how he sang this banger! Your insight on his technique and breath control really helped. Thank you!! This song slaps so hard
Great reaction! Love how you feel the music! Cheers from Brazil
