Well, I just learned the hard lesson.
I initially started modeling in Feb 2019 but, and after several trainwrecks I took a few months break: When I returned, I found I had almost miraculously made some progress (with the help of some good tips) and made my first few decent looking models, cameras and lenses among other things. College got too busy and by september 2020, I had completely fallen off the wagon.
I've recently got back into blender with some hard modeling stuff. I decided to do some renders with all of the camera gear I had modeled way back, but it just hit me that each model is made out of dozens of parts which, although labeled more or less correctly, were in a completely disorganized mess, in ill thought out names for collections etc; I essentially named stuff on the fly without thinking about when I would eventually need to parent, or apply modifiers, or append stuff to other projects; things are all over the place. And I assume the large number of parts probably resulted from my being inexperienced as well. Trying to parent everything to one MAIN object has been an absolute nightmare. So here I am, trying to learn how experienced modelers set stuff up. I largely ignored the importance of setup when I was putting a lot of time into modeling, and am now paying for it. Time to learn.

Thanks a lot for the short, concise and very helpful video on organizing things... And right where I started thinking "Yeah it's all fun and all -- but what if Jonathan showed us a way to quickly color those cubes in viewport without the rendering stuff" -- when BOOM - you do EXACTLY THAT ! O_O ^__^ Thanks so much again and let the quest truly continue !!!

For me, this video was worth watching because of:
    1. Shift+H to hide everything that's not selected. (Great shortcut!) And
    2. Align Tools. Wow! It was the one thing 3DSMax had over Blender, but it was just hidden in an add-on. Thank you!
What I actually came here to see is a workflow to organise multiple/duplicate materials. Any advice? Another video perhaps? :)
Thanks again for doing these. They're great.

You can duplicate materials by clicking "New Material" 11:05 (I know the name is misleading) between "Shield" and "X" icons in material panel. After that you will have new material with setup of original material, and it will add "001" in material name.

Hi Jonathan, very good videos you got there, congrats.
I don't get the word you use for the Outliner. Would you mind explain it ?

    • @Keep-Making
      @Keep-Making  3 года назад

It comes from my maya days 😅
It's to do with the idea of patenting things and VFX rigs. Outliner and hierarchy are basically the same thing just different words for it

How do I tell blender in which collection to make a new object?
Just selecting it and then making a new object doesn’t always seem to work.

Hey, some feedback. I've started this course as a beginner intro to Blender. I've hit "H" instead of "G" accidentally so many times in this series, so I already figured out what it does :)). Also tried hitting 1-2-3-4 a few times, but didn't get it. This video is very helpful and could be a bit higher in the "Precision Modeling" video playlist.
Also You did not explain if "shift+1" work if the regional settings would be not "US"? I'm from Europe and we have so many different regional settings here.

1-2-3-4 on the keyboard, not the numpad, just ran into the same problem.

started out good then it got really messy with the explanations. I think the second half of the video is confusing to me because its not obvious what you want to achieve.
