I loved this video, Im autistic and my special interest is psychology, neurodivergency and mental health topics, I thought the only path for me then was studying psych and becoming a therapist or researcher, but now (besides from the fact that my ADHD is not allowing me to pursue studying a degree) Ive been questioning all about the field, the medicalized view, the eugenics, and realizing the amount of abuse that nd people go throught in the mental health system, so now Im broadening the way I see neurodiversity and recovery from trauma and psyco-social adversities. So i would love to hear you talk more about this, I enjoy listening to you, It helps me see things differently

Agree. I hope Ashton does a vid on it even though i might not be able to watch it bc im sensitive to the subject.
I grew up w a mom who suffered a lot of psychiatric abuse and is informed about the field and how there is such a huge systemic issue in psychology, especially psychiatry. There's a lot of pseudoscience in the field and it directly corresponds to the big-pharma-backed systemic issues in psychiatry. Psychiatric abuse and the systemic problems of the mental health system are such big problems and Ive honestly seen more leftists contribute to the problem then be against it ):
Its really good to hear ppl like you and Ashton, who have studied or been interested in the field realize the many problems within it.
Also pls try to learn about the mistreatment of ppl diagnosed w scyzophrenia. They have been especially mistreated and there is still so much stigma about them (usually that they are dangerous or dont deserve autonomy) that helps justify their systemic abuse. And obviously listen to ppl who have it, especially those that have qualms w psychiatry and the mental health system.
In general, listen to psychiatric abuse survivors, so many leftists dismiss them and its so upsetting.

@@idonotresidehere.5709 I'll put a TW here because i dont know if this comment may be triggering for you, nothing explicit just a bit of me and my friend's experiences and mention of police abuse:
I'll try to inform myself on the topic, I have a friend with schysophrenia, most of my friends are nd so we often share our experiences, wich are not so often "abuse" in our case, but there is a lot of discrimination and negligence, from therapists not believing our autism diagnoses to literal poisoning from a bad medication interaction (the doctor didnt even dare to say sorry, she denied it being her mistake, but my friend had to stay in the hospital for weeks), I live in Argentina and the public mental hospital is very very bad, it doesnt have enough fundings, its known that there is institutional tranphobic discrimination, and the fucking POLICE is repressing people in crisis all the time, carrying GUNS, why would you take a gun to a mental hospital?? Maybe its a thing all mental hospitas have but idk, i think its fucked up
Also sorry for fucking up with the spelling its not my first language

I would def be interested in a detailed video on your thoughts on psych. I'm also autistic and so is my brother. My bro's special interests are psych and philosophy too, he's studying them in university. He really wants to contribute to the disciplines as an autistic person and provide that perspective, which I don't think is a bad thing, but I worry about his ability to work within those systems, how he'll be treated, and tbh about him developing kinda bigoted opinions about other people through constant exposure to that research and rhetoric. It doesn't seem like psych education provides enough of an analysis of cultural systems (like sexuality studies or sociology) for him to push back effectively. Maybe those are unfounded concerns, not my field, but my experience with ABA was so bad I've always been pretty turned off of psych personally. So it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Oh my god PLEASE make that full video about how psych sucks. I've wanted to study psych in post-secondary for years but I recently took an introductory course to it in high school and, as interesting as some discussions were, I realized it really drained my passion for psych. The ableism is so real and it feels so useless to be taught something every day and be like "ok this goes through my mental filter of things that are built from oppressive power structures so I'm discarding this part of it and now I'm left with all these fragments of semi-useful knowledge" and it's like what did I actually learn? Part of me still wants to study psych just for the few things I'm very passionate about and it's been part of my plan for so long that I'm not sure what to do without it. I'm thinking of going into a library and information sciences program after taking psych in undergrad. Libraries are cool :]

I went to a lecture on gender (idk what the title was, I dropped out in 2019) and the lecture hall was filled with cis people who barely knew their gender 101 and then myself. I knew more than the professor. I had to leave seminar on medieval gender like fifteen minutes into the second sitting because I couldn't endure the binary and cisnormative worldview of the other people there. I learned more about queerness and gender hanging out at the queer student group for the 4 years I went to uni, than in the lecture and seminar. (I had spent part of 2014 and 2015 researching gender out of curiosity before I realised I'm nonbinary and trans).

Tw for ableism for rest of comment:
I go to art school and my first year I had planned on minoring in art therapy and going into that field. The intro class I took was taught by someone who regularly said “differently abled”, told us that autistic children don’t love their families, and the example for a special interest she used was trains. As an autistic & mentally ill person this felt really frustrating and dehumanizing.

I would really love it if you made that video about your views on psychology, I almost did it as a degree but I dropped out for many reasons but I definitely felt it was quite close minded and a lot of research I saw was operating on so many assumptions based on societal conceptions around race, gender and dehumanising anyone who wasn’t a cis-man - had no idea the stats were based on eugenics but it makes a lot of sense

Belated, but I'm feeling you re: the ethical conundrum of working in scientific research. Unfortunately because of how the military industrial complex works, A Lot of major research in the country is funded by the US military. The proximity of course varies by field, but it comes up all over the place. A lot of foundational anthropology work was funded by imperial & military interests. An old professor of mine did Lyme disease ecology research, which was funded by the US Army (disease prevention for their bases). A faculty member in one of the marine science places I worked at was trying to develop sonar imaging for seafloor & coastal sediment, which like. Cool tech, but that project is literally being funded by the Navy so they can better survey beaches for good landing sites. This is not to say that ethical boundaries are not worthwhile to have. Just that negotiating that distance is both extremely necessary and extremely hard. High five, the struggle is fucking real, and I hope you can find an acceptable path through.

Considering the person is anti military, its not wrong for that person to settle as there is money that needs to be made. Like I as somebody who is also not a military fanboy would not hold it against the guy if he chose to take the offer. Yes, it feeds into something he is fundementally against. hai ashton!!! so happy u graduated :) i remember rewatching your day in the life at college on repeate (when we were both freshmen) while I was waiting in between classes sitting alone in my uni library. Its been so nice seeing you grow through university with me, especially as another queer trans person, and your videos on autism have helped me understand my own NDness to the point where I'm okay with considering my autistic tendencies as such (even tho every autistic person ive met has told me I am autistic *explodes*). I also just graduated and became heavily disillusioned within academia, and the experiences i had with activism/conflict lead me to aim for a masters of social work (which I'm starting in the fall!!!). I can't say social work may be a great fit for you (only you can decide that), but theres a lot of practical and hands-on interaction with people that I am looking forward to that has helped me be excited to finally make a tangible impact. However, I'm also anticipating a lot of burnout and having to take care of myself with all my sensory/socialization capabilities in mind. I would look into it if youre considering going back to school! my ba was not in social work so entering the field is quite accessible, and you definitely have way more theory under your belt as well. anyway, i've rambled for a bit but I just wanted to say thank you for posting. it has felt like I had a friend alongside me in school dealing with the same issues of being trans/queer in academia, being an activist in academia, etc, and it's made me feel like I wasn't crazy for pointing out what was wrong with the experiences I had. you also followed me on instagram a while ago (@mueritos) and I just wanted to say I was delighted you did, and if you ever want to connect or share research (I did a project on transmasc sex ed), feel free to reach out! im very excited to see what life brings you :) ps, I would love a video on maybe who were at the start of uni vs at the end (what challenges you faced, advice to overcome, etc), or maybe about handling autistic shutdowns (i experience them a few times a yr). regardless, i'll watch any and all videos you post! have a great day ^w^

On a side note, as a fellow autistic transmasc anarchist who is critical of psychology (and social work), I really enjoy watching Mickey Atkins RUclips channel, which is all about therapy stuff.

I’m an autistic trans guy as well and I just graduated high school. Also speaking of jobs, I’m doing a program next year for people with mild developmental disabilities to learn the skills to find and maintain a job, there was also another trans guy at the assessment days for that program who wasn’t autistic but had some cognitive challenges. I also know an autistic trans girl who I played trombone alongside in lab Band who had chronic pain, seizures and was losing her ability to walk and even to use her hands. She had to quit because of that unfortunately. She was a very good trombone player and I really enjoyed playing alongside someone In my section more experienced than me and I really enjoyed talking to her during rehearsals. Also your cat is very adorable and nice to hear about how affectionate she is. My grandad and grandma have 2 grey cats who are literally the suckiest cats I’ve ever known especially the boy who was literally purring the whole time I was there visiting. I also have 3 cats who are very affectionate.

As a queer autistic person that has a bachelors in psychology, I was also very disappointed in the field after getting that degree. I had to deal with homophobic and ableist professors, many also had this belief that psychologists know more about the people who seek their services than those people themselves which is just...not true? I love learning about psychology and research as well but it's *so* hard to find those type of jobs. So now I'm doing a social work degree and it aligns much better with my beliefs and morals. There's still the issue of ABA in the field but it's getting much better at least here in Canada. I'm excited about your store, I hope you can ship here!

Hi Ashton ! I really like your videos ! Since you're okay with recommendations, I would love to hear your opinion on these topics if you feel like it :
    - How to disobey, in a meaningful, smart way (as opposed to rebelling just cause it's cool without caring about the consequences) ? I tend to oberve rules and even some norms very strictly, even when I don't like them. I feel the need to change that in order to grow up and be more myself (I'm getting into anarchy bwt, in part thanks you you). Do you think there are "good and bad" ways to disobey authority and expectations, do you ever feel scared or ashamed to do so, and are there cautions you would recommend to protect oneself ? (I am autistic and often get really confused whether a situation is dangerous or not)
    - What you said about therapy in this video intrigues me. If you have more detailed critics to express I would appreciate the information, since I intend to get therapy myself (I'm in France so the field might be a bit different but still interested in your opinion).
That's it ! (for now) Thank you for being a cool parasocial model !

i will watch anything you make. im 24 and freshly graduated from uni from a linguistics major(don't even know what i can do with this except for an office job or continue academia which i hate researching/experiments), it's hard for neurotypicals to even get a job in this climate, i havent started working but i think im pivoting to barbering (currently in a barbering course). i worked in 2 office jobs, f&b before, hated all of them and i also have dry eyes that cause recurrent corneal erosions so it's best i dont do anything with computer screens.

I’m autistic, and I managed to get a job because it was during COVID (2020) and they desperately needed people. They literally just asked “do you want the job” and did no drug testing or anything. it’s not enough to survive on alone (it’s a retail job) but I’m lucky enough to live with my partner who makes more than me. I hope all autistic people here the best, and hope that they don’t have to work a job that they completely hate or burns them out too much.

(i keep editing this comment to reply to more stuff you say about psych that's why it is the way it is)
god as a psych major we literally had to learn about Freud in every single class i took. i get it he was very important and influential but can we please just assume i know who he is by the time i'm taking advanced levels courses??
also i relate to everything you said about hating psych. It does suck and on top of that it became very clear to me that most of the people taking and teaching those classes do not like or respect mentally ill or disabled people and many of them are actively scared of /disgusted by us. there's just so much bad information being taught as fact
the part about finding jobs is also so so true, i haven't looked at research jobs bc that's not my jam but the only jobs i've found that ask for ba in psych is working in aba as basically an assistant to the main therapist. i feel like it's a bonus red flag that i can even be in that situation with no training or education about therapy specifically on top of all the other issues aba has (i paused and wrote this and then unpaused and you immediately mentioned aba lol)
ultimately i decided to go to library school! i'm really excited and feel like i found my passion and ideal job rather than settling for a psych job just bc that's what i majored in

assorted list of things I'd watch Ashton talk about for hours (in no particular order):
    - The Importance of DIY in combating corporate consumerism/how to ethically partake in individuality in a capitalist society (corporations push individuality so you will buy more and more things to express your uniqueness) this would be a great patches and parley (sorry if ashton's already made this video)
    - Spill the tea on the shittiness of psychology in academia I want to know more
    - Eco-friendly cat litter? this one's a little odd and probably isn't enough to make a whole video about but I figured it'd be neat bc of Ashton's new kitty cat (she's so precious and I have a very healthy parasocial relationship with her)
    - high school vs college in terms of comfortability/safeness being trans and queer
    - updated tattoo/body mod tour? (this one might be invasive so sorry if it is)
    - Euro-centricism in Goth spaces (this sounds very ashton so again sorry if they've already made a video about this) this would also be a great patches and parley
    - Getting disability/mental health accommodations in higher level education. It was really difficult for me to get them in high school and my school was kinda pushing me to get official diagnoses before they were willing to let me have them so I'd imagine it'd be difficult in college
    - Common words that have ableist roots and better alternatives. ex "dumb" and "lame" have ableist roots and words like "uninformed" or "uncool" could be better alternatives
    - the history of specific slurs like the f slur, r slur, t slur, etc probably not racial slurs bc ashton is white and if he talked about it, it might unintentionally result in him speaking over people of color but idk i'm just a young leftie trying my best (this one will likely be a heavy topic but I think it's important)
    - affordable ways to include eco-friendly/eco-sustainable practices in one's daily life
    - basic media literacy tips/ how to tell the credibility of a source bc this is REALLY important esp with the rise in anti lgbtq+ n3o n@zism and this skill isn't taught in school well enough
    - different ways of weaponizing privilege against oppressors to uplift the oppressed
    - critiques of the medical systems through a queer lens (this might be similar to ashton's videos on trans-medicalism so sorry if this suggestion is redundant)
Anyway I hope these suggestions aren't bad ideas and also I would happily just listen to ashton talk about nothing for 3 hours

To bring up with ABA, particularly Black Autistic people have brought up that ABA can be the only helpful option to help Black Autistic people to remain safe in a racist and ableist society (especially when it comes to police violence) and that it should always be a huge forefront in conversations about ABA. I can't speak for it myself so i would recommend to anyone to listen to Black Autistic people in regards to this part of the conversations about ABA

I would love a video critiquing the field of psychology from a disability justice viewpoint! I majored in anthropology and ive thought about doing grad school but academia is like really ableist. I did my undergrad honors thesis on neurodivergent experiences in online communities but i dealt with a lot of ableism. Like i had readings for two classes that directly dehumanized autistic people. Because of my areas of interest ive had people suggest psychology to me but that sounds like an even worse time than anthropology

Also for a video idea, I know you're probably sick of it like the rest of us but this ocean gate thing is seriously pissing me off. I think it would be so refreshing to hear someone talk about people's REACTIONS to it instead of the event itself, especially someone who actually shares my values and is ACTUALLY anti-capitalist, unlike so many people who claim to be but are still preaching about human life's inherent value to make excuses and shame people who do this the rich deserve d3ath

Hey! I’m a 16 year old trans guy who’s about to start T!! I admire your videos and you as a person. I have a couple of questions I guess or possible video recommendations if you feel comfortable with such, completely okay if you don’t feel comfortable talking about those experiences. I would like to know about your experiences with uni and finding work as an autistic person who struggles with mental health issues and you ideas for your future in a career perspective. I don’t think I’ll go to uni after school and the workplace feels difficult being also autistic and raging with anxiety. I would also like to know about maintaining and finding romantic relationships as a trans person, I’m pretty sure I’m asexual but I think I still in the future would want a romantic relationship but to me that seems impossible seeing myself in a relationship I guess?
I also really enjoy your socialist videos

I feel like psychology as a field and a discipline would work for you if you were in other countries(? Of course you have similar knowledge but I realised that the mental health field is treated different in every country. In the states it is like that but in Argentina we have a fifferent approach to that I'm sure, beggining by the fact that we have public health service therefore we have public therapists. And I can say this with confidence because my mom is a psychologist and my sister is studying psychology in college, actually she's in her last year. In here besides the public health, there's no "doing reasearch for the army" and also with clinical cases, as a whole, professionals here try to give you tools to cope and live without having to take meds, of course, if it becomes something you desire to try you can but the first approach is to try other things. I don't know if it is a thing there but in here it is a law that the patience has right to decide on the treatment to a certain degree ofc, like, I would to this or that, or I don't feel comforotable w this or that and stuff and like you can talk it through to fins a way to do this that work for you and actually help you. We are the country w the most psychologists in the world so I guess it says something. I'm not trynna push this on you btw sorry if I'm unconsciously doing that btw. I just felt like sharing that just like for fun seeing how much the approach regarding mental health changes from one country to another...
Edit: Oh and btw I was talking abt clinical cases w such confidence because I'm in treatment for depression, taking meds and all so I was talking from experience. Of course this isn't all pink colored shit there's a variety of approaches from each individual professional, I have the luck that I go to people who r open minded and willing to actually help me so yeah ofc Ik some friends who had different experiences where the professionals sucked but yeah, I guess it's just a matter of searching (if u have the resources ofc).

Autistic here who will be perpetually unemployed.. i don't feel any particular way about it other than Hm wow my future seems pretty bleak! it's an odd experience having a younger sibling who is also Autistic and has a lot of similar physically disabling symptoms that i do (she has EDS, i likely have it), but can work, drive, and do other various things people generally consider a requirement for 'real' adulthood. just the way people will make comparisons. unfortunately, she herself has made it clear that she meaningfully views me as "the younger one" because of my higher support needs.
anyway yer linocut stuff is very neat to see finished, i think i remember seeing a WIP photo of it? i'm not very familiar with the process but it's wild thinking about all the work that goes into the more complex, layered prints. it seems like a very rewarding medium. i've seen linocut basically only from an artist named kit boyd. very good colours and shapes there.
edit: i guess it's not hugely important to mention, but it's difficult having a weird experience with education on top of everything else, with regards to The Future. i did not exactly. do school past eighth grade. and my schooling was very very questionable in the first place. i _officially_ dropped out in eleventh grade, and i've never felt the desire to go to college.. i did have a huge fixation on learning taxidermy four years ago, but i realised i can't stand being around groups of people (especially strangers) so my plans to actually go to classes ended there. also the various processes of getting the equivalent of a high school diploma just suck. that is not something i am capable of doing. i hate tests, i hate all of it. when i was a kid, i wanted to be a dog when i grew up.
