    For the last 30 years I've owned Rottweillers and Akitas and have (for the most part) crate trained. The dogs loved it and I never had a problem. No problem, that is, until 2 days ago when I brought home an 8 week old Newfoundland who HATED the crate. Loathed it. Howled and cried and screamed the house down at just the thought of it. Messed in it. Often. Tried tearing it to pieces, eating it, digging her way out of it, and couldn't be inside it for more than a few seconds without becoming so distressed (and loud) that it tore my heart out and I had to remove her. This went on for 2 days. Solid. Show her the cage, watch her freak, remove her (whilst feeling incredibly guilty and a bad dog owner). I'd never experienced anything like it before and was pulling my hair out when I stumbled on your lessons, put them into practice and - wah-lah - within 15 minutes of carrying out your instructions she's not only in her crate, she's ASLEEP on her back in it! All four paws up in the air, totally relaxed. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :-)

    I so appreciate your channel. I just got a rescue puppy (6 months) and am stuck in Albania (not a dog-friendly place) during the lockdown for Coronavirus. This presents a few challenges: 1. No crate available 2. This puppy is traumatized by the outdoors! He hates going outside. Do I work on the fear of the outdoors first or push potty training? I feel like when we go out multiple times, it's making him more resistant. He is at least going in the same place on the balcony! Thank you!!

    I’ve got 3 puppies and a senior dog. I’ve got one 12 week old mini Australian shepherd puppy, one 11 week old pit bull and a 14 week old pit bull puppy and 13 year old jack Russell/beagle mix. And he was so easy to potty train, but my other puppies are 100% crate trained, but about 95% house broke. They all go outside and do their business at the very least once every hour but most of the time we go out every half hour. And I take them out after every meal and when they drink a lot, after every play session, every nap, every time before and after crate time, and whenever their body language changes like if they are doing something then all of a sudden they stop and start sniffing or looking around or spinning circles we go immediately out. And I also take them out separately so less distracting. I’ll take one out while the other two go to the crate and wait their turn. And they have never ever went potty into the crate. But we still do have one or two accidents each every few days or sometimes every day. They do have limited access to the house. They are just allowed into the two living rooms where I can see them all the time but today I cut that In half and now they are only allowed in the front living room where the family spends most of the day so I can literally see every move they make. I should also mention I’ve had and been working on this with my 11 week old pit Bull puppy for about 5 weeks, the 14 week old for about 3 weeks and the 12 week old mini Aussie for just around a week. And after all the research on RUclips and all the groups I’m in and seeing 6-7 month old puppies going inside all the time it sounds like mine are doing great so far. I just feel like I’m failing them like they should be doing better. Am I doing okay? Is one or two accidents in the house every so often normal? I know it can take months to be fully trained. We will just keep working and keep working and get them trained and be great dogs!

    Awesome video! Just wondering how you know whether it’s just whining or whether it’s a signal they need to go, during the night?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 лет назад +13

      Such an important question, David! Asking your puppy to settle, and seeing what their response is is the first step. In the first few events, you should take your puppy directly out to go potty, then directly back into their crate. If they do go when you get to the potty location, you'll let them know that making noise gives them the opportunity to relieve themselves. If they go out to potty and don't have to go, you can bring your puppy back to their crate. Soon, you can ask them to settle when they begin to make noise. If your puppy settles and stops making noise, then you'll know that they didn't need to go. If they persist, or they start to make noise again, then go back to the steps above. It's really important that you focus on the task at hand in a situation like this. Out to potty, and right back into their crate. You do have to be careful that you don't accidentally teach your puppy that when they make noise, they can come out to play! Hope that's clear enough, it's difficult to give a comment this long on RUclips mobile;) Thanks for watching! ~Ken

    I commented on another video. We for quite some time did wake up in the middle of the night to let him out. He would bark to let us know. There came a time when he would make a mess then bark, we would tell him that's he is bad, take him outside, if he peed we would praise him, clean him and the kennel, then go back to bed. Then he stopped letting us know eventually and have had no lasting success for months. He is 1 year and 4 months old now.

    Thank you for all of your videos! You have helped us so much with our new puppy so far. Our pup is now 14 weeks old and while we are making progress, he doesn’t make any noise in his crate if he needs to go potty. He doesn’t cry or whine at all. So at night, it’s hard to decipher if he is just moving around a bit, dreaming, or trying to get our attention. Our crate is sized properly - he just has enough room to turn around and lie down, but he doesn’t really seem bothered if he has an accident in there - we often find him lying in it or worse, eating it. We have been covering the crate at night and during naps to let him know it’s time to sleep - should we stop covering him? Any other tips on how we can be better puppy parents? Thank you again!

Im just tired of washing 2,3 blanket beds every day. So exhausted. I cant even have him on the balcony because he pees everywhere. My solution was to wash all bedding after that accident. Supply clean scent free bedding. Worked on the principle leaving the smell behind gaver the puppy permission to pee in its bedding. The routine was come to the puppy first thing in the morning their was the accident. Put the puppy outdoors for a pee everything went in washing machine new bedding was supplied. It worked in under a week accidents were stopped. I am at home full time. So every hour put the puppy out for a pee. Any accidents in the house were responded to by saying "That is not good" and placing the puppy outside. Also after a meal the puppy is put outside. Very quickly the puppy was doing a little dance in the doorway requesting to go out for a pee. I have two adult dogs who the puppy copied to request to go outside. In about two weeks the puppy was house trained.

    My puppy is a rescued 5 month old border collie mix. She's sweet yet very shy. She has very little interest in leaving her crate at all, but she doesn't cower in it. She'll even wag her tail and lick you when you reach in to pet her. But I fear she's too attached to the crate now. She doesn't want to leave at all, and will even go potty in there. I want to help her feel more confident and coax her out but I dont want to be forceful.

    Here’s my issue my dog is potty trained for the most part. He can go on command and doesn’t have any accidents in his crate. Now he doesn’t have accidents unless there is something soft in his crate. It’s incredibly frustrating because whenever I think he’s done having accidents I put either a blanket or a dog bed in his crate and boom after a few days he pees on it. He’s just about a year old now and it’s still happening. He can go weeks without any accidents when there’s nothing else in his crate. But the second something soft is in his crate he has an accident. Just today I took him outside he peed and pooped in the yard and I put him in his crate with a brand new blanket in it and he peed on it in less then 5 minutes. I don’t think it’s marking because it’s quite a bit of pee and he doesn’t do it anywhere else. I’m desperate for some help because I don’t want him to sleep on a hard surface for the rest of his life. Also we have never used puppy pads in his life.

    This was a good video… But one question please. I obtained a 16-month-old Catahoula leopard dog at a rescue shelter last month. He has been very well trained as far as, he will let me know when he wants to go outside, does all the basic commands of sit lay down and stay. But I am assuming he has never been in a crate, and I have crate trained him. He loves to go in his crate at night, but he has an accident every single night. I will do your suggestion to take out the bedding, but if that does not work, do you have any other suggestions.

    Thank you so much for the help with potty training but as a groomer I can’t not say something about your dog’s coat condition. She is severely matted and needs shaved asap. The matting can cause severe and permanent skin and coat damage. Please get her to a good groomer as soon as possible. I would think a dog trainer such as yourself would be responsible enough to get your dog groomed every 6-8 weeks to prevent this.

    Thank you for another great video. We crate our puppy while at work and come home in between to let her out. We have taken everything out of the crate but she is still using the bathroom. She could be in the crate for less than 30mins and still potty in the crate. She then proceeds to play with her urine or feces. We get home and she is covered in it and the floor around the crate is covered ( if we leave anything under her crate like a puppy pad or a rug to she pulls it into the crate). What can we do next? Thanks for any guidance that you can provide.

      Hi there, Charles! Paying special attention to her while she's in the crate will allow you to catch her n the act, but that only works when you have some time to work on it. Spending a little time with her, before you leave for work may be necessary. If you can adjust your schedule a little so that you have an extra few minutes in the morning to tire her out before she goes into her crate, may be enough time to both have her ready for a snooze, but also ensure that she doesn't have "anything left in the tank";) If you have some idea how soon she needs to go after she eats her breakfast, then moving her feeding time so that you can take her out to go potty before you have to leave will be helpful. Removing all of the bedding and pads is a great start. I wouldn't put a puppy pad under the crate, as they often have a scent added to them to encourage the puppy to go potty on them. Give your crate a good cleaning, spend a little time before she goes in there making sure she has ample opportunity to go before she needs to go into her crate for a couple of hours. And when you're able, practice having her in her crate for short periods while you're home. That way you'll be able to mark the moment if she has an accident in her crate, and you can begin to train through that behavior if required! I'll post a link to a video that talks about what to do when you catch your puppy in the act of going potty indoors: ruclips.net/video/L1KqfQOSrKs/видео.html

    Why did I think getting a dog when I have a 4 year old and a 13 month old is a good idea....this stuff sounds hard like I can't be there all of the time I can't bring the dog in the bedroom with us cause of him possibly waking the kids or the kids waking up throughout the night and getting the dog wired. This feels impossible. I took the dog out 2 times he just screws around even with me standing still saying nothing and I leave the house for 6 minutes to take my son to school and I come back to poop in the crate. I'm ready to pull my hair out cause he's 14 weeks and we had him since 8 weeks idk what to do anymore maybe I should just give him another home cause I can't do all this on my own

    Hi Ken, thank you for this information. I have a 3 month old Rottie (Samson) and he's doing great except for the peeing in the crate and the house but he does run to the door when he has to poo. So I can't figure the little guy out. He goes out twice before we go to bed and I even use a timer set at 3-4 hour intervals to get up and take him out. I usually hear him chewing on a toy so I'm getting up before the alarm rings. It's still so frustrating because his last outing was 5 am this morning and when I heard him stirring and chewing at 6:30 that's all I thought it was. But lo and behold, he peed in his crate. I do keep bedding in half his crate (the back half) and it usually runs onto the bedding. Should I remove it completely as your video says or try putting in the front of it first. I plan on binge watching all your videos because I'm going nuts. I follow him all over the house, bring him out OFTEN, keep him contained with me while preparing meals and the little dude just goes without letting me know. Anyhoo, thank you.

It's been almost a month since he's peed or pooped in the crate and the house. He's been such a good boy in letting us know by walking to the door and we put some bells at the door for him to brush agains. We still keep an eye on him by letting him out after he sleeps during the day, after play time with our female and he goes a good 6 1/2 hours over night without messing at all. So hopefully yours will figure it out.

    What if my puppy doesn’t make any noise. He literally sneaks it. You can hardly hear his nails on the crate floor. He doesn’t whine at all. I took his bed out cause he kept getting up and just going potty. So today we had play time. After play time I took him outside and he went potty. Pooped and peed. I praised him and gave him loves of course. I still waited about another 20 minutes to see if he was going to go again. I brought him back in the house and put him in his crate I went to use the potty and as soon as I came out I could smell poop. He doesn’t care about poop at all. He just steps in it and lays in it like it’s not there. ☹️ really losing hope.

    Very informative video, thank you!
    One question. I have a young pup who I’m trying to potty train via crate training. While I can follow the process when I’m at home, I am out of the house for seven hours when I’m at work. I realize that this isn’t the most ideal situation and I should let him out every couple of hours but I work too far away to go home on my break. Before I get accused of being cruel and irresponsible for getting a pup I can’t spend those hours with, I got him from a friends friend who wasn’t able to look after him.
    I do have a second bigger crate which will allow the puppy to pee and stay out of it. Should I put the pup in the bigger crate when I’m at work so it doesn’t end up in this own pee and then put him in the smaller crate when I’m back home and let him sleep in it?
    Any help would b massively appreciated!
    Thank you in advance!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 лет назад +4

      Hi there, Chris! Without knowing a little more, it’s hard to say how long your pup should be able to hold it. It would be ideal if you could get a dog walker or a friend or someone to let your pup out mid-day. If that isn’t possible, be sure to give your pup lots of exercise before you leave for work. You may need to start your day earlier but your pup is more likely to be successful this way. Putting him in a larger crate will give him more room to pee in his crate and this will lead to some confusion about the potty training process. Set him up to be successful by having him ready to rest comfortably after spending as much time as possible with him in the morning so he’s ready for a nap and his bladder is empty. Thanks for watching! ~Ken

      @@McCannDogs Thank you for the quick response! I'm a bit skeptical about dog walkers here in Taiwan as certain breeds tend to "go missing".
      We have a little French bulldog and he is three months old. The crate he is in at the moment is too big so we are thinking about getting a divider for it. The thing is, it has a wire bottom so even if he pees, he won't be sitting in it. Should we still divide it and just put a towel down?
      We do have another crate we use to take him to the vets but I think this is a bit small and dark for him to be left in (he would also get a bit too warm).
      Is the idea, once he is toilet trained we can take out the divide and he will still hold it? He's pretty stubborn so I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to using the other side as a toilet again!

    Hi, I have a springer spaniel and he's housebroken. However, he's been peeing a little bit in places around the house in the last few weeks. I don't think it is peeing to relieve himself, it seems to be more of putting his scent around. He knows what he's done is wrong. As soon as I see it and point it out, he runs out. But this keeps happening. Also, this mostly happens when no one is around, when I'm upstairs or not in the area.

She can go pee and poop outside fine,except she takes forever to poop or she doesn't at all. She can pee on the pee pad in the home and knows to go but she can't poop on the pee pad. I know this sounds really confusing and isn't ideal. But a majority of the time she will be relieving herself outside.

    so this isn't really something to do with actual crate training, bit an issue I have found with our potty training. unfortunately, when we got our puppy a week ago, we immediately started making the mistake of making the garden a fun place where we play and laugh with him when really we just want him to go potty. when he wasn't peeing we would get bored and just play with him. now I've realized the mistake but I'm not sure how to 'undo' it - how do I now teach him that being outside is all about going potty and not about play?

      Hey Carla, I'm sorry that you are having to deal with all these issues. Ask yourself, is the crate the right size, are you praising him enough so he knows that hes doing good, telling them they are a good boy or girl and petting them. I was having the same issue with my puppy and though it is very controversial, i do think that scolding your puppy when he has an accident does help. You're teaching them that what they did is not okay and makes you upset and they'll try to avoid doing it again. I usually put my dogs nose next to the accident and give him a small spanking, nothing that would physically harm him but let him know he made a mistake. I know its hard to wake up so many times in the night as well but you need to be on top of it. If your puppy is under 6 weeks old you cant expect them to know any better and i wouldn't recommend discipline to a puppy under 6 weeks. make sure you are giving them good food or they may have diarrhea that they cant hold in for long, worms in their stomach may also cause this so its good to get them de-wormed if diarrhea continues. There are many signs that you may not recognize telling us they need to go. He'll move from where he is laying to another corner, hes walking around the crate sniffing. You need to take him/her outside or to the potty pad before and after he goes into the crate, after meal time, after play time, and whenever he wakes up from a nap or in the mornings. If you keep this up along with taking him within every 1-2 hours you should see some results. Please feel free to reply to this comment and ask anymore questions along the way, even weeks from now. Let me know if you need advice for something I didn't cover or have more details on your puppy's behavior regarding potty training. I hope everything works out!
