  • Thank you for watching the ULTIMATE TRAVEL GUIDE to North Cascades National Park. This video explores how to get here, how to get around, where to stay, where to eat and what there is to do in this remarkable National Park.
North Cascades National Park is one the most beautiful Parks in the country yet one of the least visited. Why? It's not far from Seattle or Vancouver! Well, it's also a rather undeveloped park (a good thing) and quietly breathes without drawing in the crowds with famous attractions. If beauty is what you're after then this is the Park and this is your Ultimate Travel Guide to North Cascades National Park.

North Cascades National Park, located in the heart of Washington state, is a hidden gem in the United States national park system. This pristine wilderness offers visitors a breathtaking escape into nature's rugged beauty, with its jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and lush forests. Spanning over 500,000 acres, this park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, providing a wide range of activities and experiences for those seeking adventure and tranquility alike.
One of the park's most iconic features is its stunning mountain range, the North Cascades. Often referred to as the "American Alps," these rugged peaks soar to heights of over 9,000 feet, creating a dramatic backdrop for the park's landscapes. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here, with trails suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Cascade Pass Trail offers a moderately challenging trek through subalpine meadows, leading to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. For the more adventurous, the challenging Sahale Arm Trail offers a high-altitude adventure culminating in awe-inspiring vistas.
North Cascades National Park is also renowned for its pristine alpine lakes. Diablo Lake, with its brilliant turquoise waters, is a must-visit destination. Visitors can take a scenic drive along the North Cascades Highway to overlooks that provide stunning views of the lake and its surrounding peaks. Additionally, Ross Lake, a massive reservoir formed by the Skagit River, offers opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and camping along its scenic shores. These lakes, along with countless others hidden deep within the park's interior, make North Cascades a paradise for water enthusiasts.
Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty to admire here as well. The park is home to a diverse array of animals, including black bears, mountain goats, gray wolves, and bald eagles. Birdwatchers can spend hours spotting a variety of species, both migratory and resident. Make sure to carry binoculars and a camera to capture these precious moments.
For those interested in camping, North Cascades National Park offers various campgrounds, from developed sites with amenities to more primitive backcountry options. Backcountry camping permits are required for certain areas and provide a true wilderness experience, far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
One unique aspect of this park is the availability of winter activities. North Cascades becomes a winter wonderland when snow blankets the landscape. Skiing and snowshoeing are popular pastimes, and snow-covered trails offer a serene and peaceful escape. For those seeking the ultimate winter adventure, the park's visitor center provides information on backcountry skiing and snow camping opportunities.
The North Cascades Institute offers educational programs and guided tours for those eager to deepen their understanding of the park's ecology, geology, and cultural history. From birdwatching to photography workshops, these programs cater to a wide range of interests.
The small towns surrounding North Cascades National Park also add to the charm of the area. Marblemount and Winthrop are popular starting points for exploring the park and provide a cozy, rustic atmosphere with quaint shops and restaurants.
In conclusion, North Cascades National Park is a true wilderness wonderland that beckons adventurers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking respite from the chaos of modern life. Its rugged beauty, diverse ecosystems, and recreational opportunities make it a must-visit destination for those looking to connect with the great outdoors. Whether you're hiking among towering peaks, paddling on crystal-clear lakes, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the wilderness, North Cascades National Park promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of nature's grandeur.

You are so right - and I never really thought of it like that. The North Cascades is one of the few National Parks not overrun with tourists. It's a little slice of heaven. Love the UK (was there in April and heading back in December).

You're going at a good time! Was just there this weekend - beautiful (well, weather wasn't but it was "atmospheric") and not crowded. Thanks for the nice comment.

I'm pretty sure you can get to the Diablo lake overlook. The highway closes down around the Ross Dam Trailhead during the winter. Here is the site to check: www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/north-cascades-highway.htm?ref=travellens.co#:~:text=State%20Route%2020%20Closed%20for%20the%20Winter&text=State%20Route%2020%20is%20closed,do%20not%20block%20the%20gate.

The scenery is breathtaking. But I suspect more than a few people encountering Grizzlies during hiking. Everything I see in this video smells like a teen-spirit bear.

I don't know anything who has seen a grizzly there, but I'm told they exist in the North Cascades. I've actually never seen any bears but you're right, it feels like bear country and you can't be too careful.
