    First off, nice job on the video. I was very excited about these new systems when I had first heard about them, but the more I see the less excited I am. First off, the phone always has to be plugged in to make carplay/android auto work, and that seems like kind of hassle to me. The only music I ever listen to is "bluetooth streaming" of my Spotify, so music wise these systems really do nothing for me. Now for navigation, I really have never had an issue just using my phone for my navigation, so it really does nothing for me in that way. I am NOT hating on these systems, I am just looking at it from how it would change things for me, and honestly I doubt I would ever take the time to connect my phone unless I was taking a VERY long trip. I am just not very excited about them any more.

    I am not sure how it was before, but on my 2018 Optima, in order to use Google Maps on Android Auto, the GPS module needs to be active on your phone prior to utilization of Google Maps.

    Wanted to know if the carplay is already available on the kia optima 2016 or will it arrive at a later point of time.? because at 3:30 in the video, I see apple carplay in the kia optima screen.
    Whereas, Kia optima 2016 i bought 20 days doesn't have apple carplay.

    Absolutely frustrating that the 2015 Hyundai Sonata with Tech package still does not have CarPlay and Hyundai isn't explaining the delay.

      I concur! I have Android Auto but no Android phone, come on Hyundai give us the update so we can get with the program lol.
      Otherwise, I love my 2015 Sonata 2.0t limited.

      +no.0221 Yes, I own the mentioned Hyundai. The bitching comes from all the marketing Hyundai did saying it'll have it and yet after almost a year still no feature.

    if you have a Google Maps app on your iPhone, are you able to use Google Maps instead of Apple Maps?

    on CarPlay does the phone have to stay on at all times or can it be locked? Also if you use this How much data does it consume? May not be a wise choice for those without an unlimited plan. Thanks Alex. Great video as always.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +veedubbcubb It can be locked if you choose. Data is similar to doing all those same things on your phone itself so there is little difference in that regard and it depends greatly on your use case.

    Hi Alex, I bought Honda Accord Hybrid 2015 after watching your review. I love it. Do you know if the new software Android Auto on the 2016 can be updated to the 2015?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +Van Sun Since the hardware changed significantly for 2016 I would say it is unlikely.

    I just want to clarify one thing about this system. If I plug in an android phone into this player, it will change to Android Auto whereas if I plug in an apple phone, it will automatically change to Apple Car Play. Am I correct about this?

    Can you navigate while moving? I hate not being able to navigate in my 2010 Prius while moving, I guess Toyota didn't consider a passenger could use the GPS system safely while moving.

  • @DaveFarr

    I have a Note8, so I'm mainly interested in the Android Auto experience. I was wondering, is it possible to plug in the phone and have the system function as a dual-display setup? Say a media player on the car's display and navigation on the phone, or vice versa?

    Nice review ! My question is when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto does different vehicle processor speeds have an impact ? Have you found any differences in smoothness of use in varied vehicles ?
    Thanks

      I don't know about Android Auto since I have CarPlay, but vehicle processor speeds have no impact since it's running off my iPhone's processor. Hope that helps

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +snakerb Correct. Vehicle processor speeds should have no impact since the car becomes a monitor for your phone

    I have a friend who related a story involving some hacker taking over the U-Connect on another person's Jeep Cherokee, thereby taking over controls of various vehicle functions (a/c, nav, etc).
    Is that addressed in the CarPlay/Android Auto?

    Call me old school, but I do not like the idea of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in cars. Don't get me wrong, this is a very cool feature, I just wish we would not depend on our phones for everything. Let's say auto companies stopped creating their own infotainment systems and set up their cars to just use CarPlay and Android Auto, what if someone breaks or loses their phone, or what about the people who don't have smartphones. Another issue is this: I like how car companies provide so many options to make sure people are not distracted while driving, but lots of people are naturally stubborn and don't change, so will people even use this if their car has it because I can't count how many times I see people driving in a vehicle manufactured after 2013 and holding their smartphone to their ear instead of using Bluetooth.

      +Elliott Manning I agree with what you mentioned wholeheartedly. Too many people not paying attention while they drive. Being a longtime motorcyclist makes this doubly keen for me. Just like people turning down their radios in their cars when looking for something while driving the same applies while doing anything else while driving. It isn't just texting but doing anything else while driving which includes listening to a phone conversation. So much for multitasking!

    • @SilentServiceCode
      @SilentServiceCode 8 лет назад

      +Elliott Manning i've been waiting for years for this. i've said for like 10 years that to truly do this right, the phone needs to be the interface to the car

    Does Kia Optima offer car play and android auto?

  • @alliejr
    @alliejr 9 лет назад +2

    I suspect that "pinch to zoom" is present or absent based more on the car screen technology than Apple vs. Android. Such a feature requires a special kind of touch screen and many car-based touch screens do not support it, regardless of the underlying operating system, technology, processor, etc.. I suspect Apple decided to take a lowest-common-denominator approach to support the widest number of car-screen-tech while Android made a different call. Ford and Honda in-car-tech, for instance, do not support pinch/zoom, and so if you could run Android auto on those cars, that feature would/could not work anyway. Do you have any info from Hyundai or Honda in this regard?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +allierogers Not at present, it's an Apple thing. The Hyundai, Kia, Honda and Volvo systems all offer ping to zoom on Android devices but not on Apple devices. The explanation from all of them was that it is simply not supported b Apple at the moment.

    • @alliejr
      @alliejr 9 лет назад

      Got it, thanks. But again I suspect Apple made that decision because not ALL touch screen hardware supports multi-touch required for pinch-to-zoom. Android is clearly only supporting hardware that does.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +allierogers That's where it gets odd. Apple supposedly requires that the screen support that style of gesture. Essentially nobody has announced only support of CarPlay without Android Auto so that's another oddity since they basically all have that. I suspect we will see it shortly in the next software revision.

  • @butipasila
    @butipasila 9 лет назад

    Hi Alex. Since apple carplay is basically a screen mirroring going on on the phone as well, were are you able to verify if the iphone screen interactions also locks up when Honda Accord disables screen interaction on the carplay while the car is moving?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +Ted Schactimera No, it is still fully functional although some things like text searches for navigation disappear

    • @butipasila
      @butipasila 9 лет назад

      +Alex on Autos And that is controlled by the phone and not by the car head unit correct? I was thinking Hyundai does not have a "disable" function on their head units while the car is in motion.
      Another question: were you able to verify if future Apple IOS updates or Android updates will now apply to head units of cars that support Apple CarPlay and Anroid Auto?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +Ted Schactimera It is likely a function of the phone.
      I'm not sure what you mean about updates? The Apple/Google updates apply to the phone and anything generated by the phone.

    • @butipasila
      @butipasila 9 лет назад

      +Alex on Autos Sorry.
      To clarify, I was referring to the software updates on the 2 devices communicating with each other: The phone and the radio/head unit.
      Since both devices will now run on Android/Apple IOS, we have to make sure any updates will continue to make them communicate with each other.
      You've mentioned the software updates on the Phone side.
      How about software updates on the head unit? E.g., the missing pinch-to-zoom capability on IOS Car Play (I think this would be on the head unit side).

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 лет назад

      +Ted Schactimera Support for pinch to zoom would be on the iPhone side not the car side. Few if any updates would be needed on the car side. Remember, the car is just the "monitor and keyboard" for your phone. Just like you don't normally update the firmware on your monitor or keyboard this is the same thing. The features are all driven by the phone.
