  • In the early days of SEPTA, there existed two types of Neoplan Buses. One batch was powered by a 6v92 hooked up to an Allison Transmission. These were commonly referred to as the "Pennliners" as they were purchased by the state of Pennsylvania.
This is another one of trainman1971's gems. This time it's an audio recording of an 8000 series Neoplan. Photo courtesy of Bastranz (Brandon Shaw)

Los Angeles's LACMTA (then Southern California RTD or SCRTD) also had these buses, built in 1983, with the same Detroit 6V92TA engine (units 3300-3689, built with Allison HT747 transmission) and 1984 (units 3690-3714, built with Allison HTB748 ATEC transmission).
In 1987, a third fleet of Neoplans joined these two, again using the Detroit 6V92TA engine except instead of the powertrain layout being T-drive, this batch of 90 (units 1100-1189) was built as V-drive and thus had Allison V731 ATEC transmissions. This batch also had a tag axle.

Man, these clips give me life. I remember joyriding SEPTA back in early 1997 on a Saturday morning. I caught route 26 at Wayne and Chelten Aves where the old Philadelphia Gas Works building used to be and it was Neoplan BD 8454. I took the bus from there all the way to One and Olney Shopping Center. Then I got back on it and rode it to Olney Terminal on it way back to Rittenhouse and Pulaski. Fun times indeed.

I remember in the summer of 1993, my guardian who my mother left me with while she went to work, had took route K from 18th and Chelten Ave all the way to Wayne and Chelten Aves. It was on Neoplan BD 8444. When we were about to get off, the bus driver allowed me to press the green button to open the doors and everyone on the bus clapped for me. It was a fun ride and experience on a Frankford bus.

I was a mechanic for S.E.P.T.A. for 14 years and worked 3 different depots....Germantown .....Luzerne ....Midvale and back to the Brake center! I have flashbacks of these buses..I used to like revving up that Detroit to air it up just to listen to it as I would slowly ease off the pedal to listen to it wind down....lol. But there was one problem I remember with those 8500 series was the toggle switch for the gear shift selector had a tendency to go bad so they would stick in gear and wouldn't start. So we would have to go in the back to the transmission linkage to manually shift it into neutral to get it to start....lol!

Actually this sounds like a Allison HT-747. The way the gear shifts from 1st and 2nd gear is indicative of the 747. In the HT-740, there is a long rev between first to second gear.

Was this taken on a Victory 8500 suburban series Neoplan BD bus? I rode 8570 on the 110 Christmas Eve 1996 and 8570 kinda sounded like this. This reminds me of that jog up on West Chester Pike that the 104-Newtown Square, 120- Cheyney and the 103-Ardmore took coming out of the terminal. 110-Broomall/Springfield and 111-Springfield turned off on State Road.

Dennel Wright i agree with you! It made my heart sad when they went with New Flyer in 2001. SEPTA could have helped them stay in business. Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority and San Francisco MUNI canceled their bus orders due to lateness which sent Neoplan into bankruptcy. Crazy.
