MCTS uses to have a 1986 Neoplan AN440-A, half of 20 were Cummins L10 and half 37 of them were Detroit Diesel 6v92TA sound like this.
    3600-3619 Cummins L10 with Voith 863.3 Transmission
    3620-3656 Detroit Diesel 6v92TA with Allison V731 Transmission(originally with a Allison HTB-740 Transmission). 55 of them were rehabbed in 1995 or 1996.

BryceCBS yes I remember that when they had the N416 3300-3334 and they had 37 AN440 3620-3656 and had 5 RTS 3220-3224 that had the 6V92 diesel with the 731 transmission

Nice recording, the only other V-drive DD6V92 Neoplan I've seen/heard of was SCRTD/LACMTA's surburban Neoplan AN440/3 units.

@8v71buses Yea and before this i never knew that Neoplan USA built buses with Transverse mount engines i discovered that when i saw these buses running in downtown Jacksonville and heard one of them and said to my self in the world that bus sounds just like a Flxible .I also notice that these Neoplans had the rear axels and tires closer to the engine compartment like the RTS buses.

AC Transit had these buses too based on the 1200 series.

It's hard to imagine only two TAs in the entire state bought buses from Neoplan. They were good buses for the most part. My favorite combo on the Neos are 6V92TA + Allison HT. Jacksonville had a very interesting fleet back in the 1990s especially the 1983 Crown Ikarus 286 buses as well as the Neoplans and Flxibles.

@baul104 No sorry they retired all those good buses before i got a chance to get to them.

@daniel022209 With the T-drive transmission set up, the rear axle is moved forward a bit. Plus, the transmission/engine sound is quite different, using an HT series or B-world transmission (for buses powered by Allisons). Check out the SEPTA Neoplan videos for examples of T-drive Neoplans, although most of them feature the ones powered by the ZF Transmission.
A common example of a T-drive bus can be found in a 6v92TA powered Orion I or V. The older Neoplans with T-drive sound like them.

A few other cities had em. I know where I grew up in Santa Rosa, CA we had about 14 1987 and 3 1991's that were like that. As well Cincinnati, OH had at least 200 AN440's with the V731.

Baltimore MTA had 10 of them. 3701 to 3710 in their roster.

Milwaukee had 35 Neoplan N416s numbers 3300-3334 and 37 Neoplan AN440 numbers 3620-3656 and 5 GMC RTS buses numbers 3220-3224 all had the 6V92 Detroit diesel with the Allison 731 transmission

I'm glad JTA is still at least using the Novabus RTS models. Those are my favorites!!

Wow, very nice recording. It's very interesting to see and hear a Neoplan AN440 with V-drive as opposed to the T-drive ones I grew up with. Sounds quite like a Flxible Metro B!

  • @MarcosAR
    @MarcosAR  11 лет назад +3

Well those were t-drive buses so they probably sounded more like my recordings of the Grayline 1986 Neoplan an 340's.

Sounds like an RTS plain and simple (my fave bus) and although that slightly bugs me as this ain't an RTS, I'll still take it as it's a Neo (they're my second fave bus) so it's all good LoL

    Hello
SCRTD, oringnally order AN440s with 6v90TAs and HT748 transmission in 1984, but 1987, they got brand 3 axles suburbands AN 440s with 6v92TAs and V730 transmiision. I thought it was wired, that the 3 axle ones, sounded like RTSes, but 2 axles one sounded drifferent.

I miss the ones back in Pittsburgh. The Neoplan Penn Liner buses in the City of Pittsburgh represented Port Authority of Allegheny County splendidly back in the 80's and early 90's.

@lucian400 Thanks yeap i remember when i was there in Jacksonville and i heard one of these buses pass me by and i heard the Allison V 730,731 whine i said to my self did i heard what i just heard ? that bus sounded like an like the RTS or Flxible and then I've notice the rear axle on those buses they were further back closer to the engine compartment like the RTS buses and that's when it hit me that Neoplan just like New Flyer built buses in V and T drive configurations.

Hey I just noticed that these Neoplan do not have the Sutrak A/C component on the rooftop of the bus...cuz Neoplan USA often sent out their buses to TAs with this air conditioner.

If I'm not mistaken, in 2002 the Ikarus 416 buses built in 1989 (first ones ever built) were still running at this time. Hard to believe that a single Pennliner originally suppose to go to SEPTA came down here and introduced Neoplans to the state. Sadly only two TAs bought them, but a bunch of private companies bough a number of them.

That's one of the main reasons I went to Jacksonville in the first place but I didn't see one of them

Sorry to hear you weren't successful with that. It makes me ask how did the 416 perform along with the 286s. That could be a sign as to why some didn't see them. Of course I don't think they were prematurely retired or anything (I await to be proven wrong).

Until the beginning of last year JTA kept 9110 in service as a Driver's Shuttle bus to take the drivers from the yard to the terminal. It was in a AIRJTA scheme. Miss those double row tail lights.

@Bastranz It is easy to convert a Neoplan that is a V-Drive to a T-Drive and if so, ow much do you think? I want to see if diesel mechanics can retrofit by replacing a Allison V731 and placing a HT740 in there. I wonder if it will work.

@MAR1NAB5180 Yeah I was wish that I could have seen one of these buses in person when I visited Jacksonville when I was younger. But I gota chance to see and hear the Flxibles and RTS buses with the same powertrain, and they were awesome
