Planting Vegetables Before Last Frost

- Several vegetables can be planted out or direct sown weeks before your average last frost. I will go through some of my favourites with you while I do some planting in my raised bed garden.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

really enjoy watching your videos, they're very inspiring and motivating to get us start gardening outside
Awesome! Thank you!
Your channel is such a blessing to me! I now live in Zone 4 (A or B) depends on the source...lol
I will be doing something very similar with lettuces, spinach and radishes by the end of the week thx to your helpful video!!!
It's been a challenge living in such a short-season area. I used to garden about 10 months out of the year in CA. Now in UT, snow country.
That must have been quite a shock to go from CA to UT and try to garden!
@@PrairiePlantgirl I am still in shock at times. I put up a trellis today (as you did) and planted lettuces and spinach under it. I put a sunscreen over the trellis. A very strong wind suddenly came up and blew the trellis down. It started to hail. My son laughed when he saw me run into the house saying "I hate Utah!" Funny. But not.
I use the digital meat thermometer from the kitchen :) I wait for 15° daytime soil temperature for beans.
Yes, beans need warmer soil. The kitchen thermometer would work well!
Watching from zone 6b. Thank you ❤😊
We’re supposed to have roughly 10-15cm of snow tonight.😂🤣 the spring weather never disappoints. I have planted some peas, spinach, lettuce and carrot seeds. Hopefully everything starts to grow after next week when the temperatures improve.
You’ll get some good moisture from that snow. I bet those seeds will shoot out of the ground when the warm weather arrives.
I have sowed parsnips, carrots, radishes, bok choy, spinach, peas, lettuces, endive, kale, and beets, all under mini plastic row covers I built to go on top of my raised beds.
You are ahead of me!
I will be watching for your next video showing how you separate your onion seedlings, how you prepare the soil for them and how deep and far apart you plant them, so I could plant mine with confidence.
Thanks for letting me know that is something you want to see. I’ll try to make that a priority.
@@PrairiePlantgirl Thank YOU.
I will be waiting for the onion one as well@@PrairiePlantgirl
Try Tatsoi, it has less thick stem and more leaves. I man I followed for years (sadly he passed away last year) started growing them, they really impressed me, give them a try.
Also komatsuma!
Howdy Prairie Plantgirl and handsome Buster! Oh, happy day...transplanting and direct sowing!💃
It’s a wonderful feeling!
Very nice video but why less view
I couldn’t get enough done before the rain, I tried. Z5a, WI and this is the earliest I’ve started transplanting. I’ve had the brassicas in for about 2 weeks in a low tunnel with frost clothe and plastic needed last week as it was cold. Spinach has been out by itself and not growing much.
I did manage to get beets and onions in and wanted to get carrots, parsnips, kohlrabi, turnips and rutabagas in.
I need to get some plants out of the greenhouse so I have room and not babysitting.
Ugh! And lettuce 🥬 I started some in a tray and need to get them out.
If I wasn’t using all my time putting up poultry wire I probably would have had plenty of time. Last year we had 5 baby rabbits fit through 2x4 wire fencing and wondered why I had no peas or lettuce. 😂 if I don’t get the lettuce planted I won’t have it again as it will get too hot.
I looked at Accuweather future cast and didn’t see any freezing weather, but I hope I have enough frost clothes just in case.
I believe you had a warmer winter also? I’ve been finding A Lot of Happy surprises that wintered over. Two that amazed me were artichokes and carnations! Found others that I wrote off as I didn’t see them last year until I found the tags under all the oak leaves. Found baby’s breath, Veronica, salvia, snapdragons and still have no idea if it’s Canterbury Bells or Foxgloves as they look alike and found tags for both 🤷♀️.
I’m laughing as I’m listening and you mentioned rabbits😂😂😂. Oh Wow, then you mentioned Voles! I had my first Ever of voles last year. They ate spring bulbs. I didn’t know what they were and soon fixed that problem once I found out.
Thanks for listing where you garden from as I watch many from cold areas. Had a great aunt that lived in your area.
We finally have rain returning and pulling out of drought. We installed the same drip system last year. I need to keep remembering because I have a few repairs to make 😅. Today I’ll finish separating tomatoes and maybe get a few things planted after the rain. I don’t like to work in wet soil, but it’s overcast and that cool season window is tiny.
I grow celery in grow bags in a kiddie pool with drain hole 2-3” high. I like them blanched and by filling a 10 gallon bag half full the bag does the blanching and the pool keeps the bog plants happy. I’m trying a couple new varieties-pink, giant golden pascal.
With the rain returning it should be a Great growing season. Hope you found some happy surprises in your garden.
Great tips for the celery. This is a busy time for gardeners and it sounds like you are in the thick of it! We have rain in the forecast so hopefully we get some good moisture this week.
My husband John Jude was wanting me to send pictures of his carrier to move his plants around. What is your email?
