The Wreck Of The Spiegel Grove: A Scuba Diver's Tour

- I owe you this video! Finally, I've got the footage to give you a DPV Scuba Diver's Tour of the third-largest artificial reef in the world: USN Spiegel Grove.
Shot over four or five dives, I've pieced together footage and time-lapse of my favourite dives to do on this massive wreck. Thanks to my Black Tip DPV from Dive Xtras (not sponsored - paid for this beast!) I now have the right tool to cover this entire wreck.
The Spiegel Grove was a USN Landing Ship Dock, a support vessel, that provided shoreward operations during the cold war. 510ft (155m) long, 84ft (25m) across her beam, she is the third-largest wreck to be sunk for the purposes of creating a dive site.
I absolutely love scuba diving this wreck. I've probably got about 300-400 scuba dives on this dive site and I can never get bored of her. She is an ideal training ground for everything from Advanced Open Water Diver Courses all the way up to Tec Courses.
If you're diving the Spiegel Grove - or any dive for that matter - never exceed the limits of your training!
Thanks as always for watching!

If you’re tech trained you can get prizes…
10k in training later: I found an $8 snorkel scuba diving is paying for itself!
Now that right there is ROI!
Dove the Spiegel yesterday, it was fantastic. Plus I was able to get in to see Snoopy.
Excellent, thanks for sharing! Could you do a video explaining how you set up your DPV with the lights and the camera? I would love to see your DPV setup and hear why you have set it up the way you have.
Can’t wait to get back to Miami to do my advanced cert and see this beast with you James!
First time in Florida, and am scheduled to dive off the Spiegel Grove on NOV 30TH. I didn't realize how large this really was. Now, I'm really excited! Thank You for the video.
I love that wreck. Got the chance to dive her last year and it was the best dive ever. Visibility was crystal clear.
Just dived the USS Spiegel Grove. Very impressive! And you’re not kidding about that current. It was whipping today 8/1/24
The Spiegel Grove is my favorite wreck. Nice tour.
I wanna get a picture of snoopy 🤯 awesome tour bro
Super cool Video, I love the way you voiced it as an istruction pre or after the dive! Still can't believe how much stuff you took with you!
Had four dives on the Spiegel Grove last December and loved every minute of it. Not only a huge wreck, but so full of beautiful coral/sponge coverage, as well as lots of marine life to see. Loved the barracuda just hanging out next to us during our safety stop. I cannot wait to dive her again. Amazing wreck!!
What Charter/dive shop did you use?
Absolutely amazing! Thank you!
Well, it's about time!!! you started to remind me of my grandpa, had to have that Ferrari but hasn't left the garage.... great footage 👏
Excellent. Thanks James
I’ve been waiting to see this. The vessel looks magnificent, hoping to dive there within the next year.
Very cool video, James! I got to dive the Spiegel Grove last year and can't wait to dive her again!!
Such a great dive. I love that you are getting all the loot off the sand.
The timing is perfect for this video James - Thanks! I'm in a group heading to the Spiegel Grove this coming weekend.
James, you answered my question from the livestream with Matthias and I think this is it...one of those top dive sites to visit when I'm in town!
Fantastic!
Awesome footage. I’m def adding this to my list of next dives to hit in Florida.
Great video! I can finally show my no diving friends a video of this that won’t make them sick! I got the chance to dive here a few years ago. This video makes me want to get back to it. I am hoping to be able to get down there this winter. Thank you!!
Great stuff James! The Spiegel is my favorite dive as well and cannot get enough of it....it is so awesome that the sharks have showed up and stayed, see them every dive now! I want a DPV for sure now lol
Hey James that was amazing. I am rescue diver getting my dive master in Fort Lauderdale. I’ve done the Spiegel Grove for two dives so far and it is a wonderland. I went down the ball that leads to the bow and got to do a cool swim thru. When I’m done with my DM I’m going to do some tech dive training with you and see this better !
Such a wonderful wreck
Hope you can come dive it one of these days.
Wow she is just massive!! 😯😯 and also that dpv looks hella fun
Absolutely fantastic! What a wreck! Only have 4 wreck dives off the NC coast and that dive outfit failed in my opinion, but it was a great intro to wreck diving. Can't wait to head down to the Keys for some wreck diving. Thanks James!
Cannot wait to dive this site!!!
Love it! Can't wait to dive it together with you. :)
One of my bucket list dives! Finally got to do it! Massive, as James said, you won't see everything in multiple dives. Dove with Horizon also. Great group of folks.
Finally, hehe!! 😜😜🤣Thank you for this video!
Very nice video. A similar video of a dive on the USS Oriskany would be great.
Very cool video :) I dove the Spiegel Grove for the first time this week and loved it! We'll go back a few more times this summer for sure!
My favorite dive site.
Great video I need one of those DPVs. I would definitely be nervous taking it to see snoopy 😁
Vary much a fun dive.
An amazing place, usually wrecks are cool but this one is unbelievable. Nice video
Nice to see a dive video.
I dove this wreck on the very first day she was uprighted from the hurricane. The DM came up to give the ok to get in and was like “holy sh$t, cap! She’s vertical!” Needless to say it was an awesome dive and one of my all time favs. I still dive it every time I am down there.
Awesome video James!!!
Nice!!!
Love the Spiegel Grove!
My fiancee and I just did our OW certification 2 months ago... on that boat... with the same guide video taped here!! Surreal.
Good times! Dive safe.
I cant say it enough James. Thank you! Training with you for my Advanced and wreck cert on this wreck was fantastic. Current was rippin' but it was an experience I won't forget. I am sure to dive it again since I am local. Amazing 👏
Awesome diving with you George! Thanks so much!
Just wow! :)
Enjoy your channel James, but would prefer to see you do another with the GoPro pointing to the 10:30am (or 1:30pm) position with a wide angle. You know, to see the actual ship in question. "A" for effort, but quite short of your typical dependable value.
I dive few time also on this shipwreck and is awesome always like to come back see new things
All caps
Thank you., Amazing, feel free to do more tours like that.
Awesome video my friend ... Thanks
Not related to this video, but your channel has saved my dive twice already in my so far 14 dive career. Thanks for all the videos and good info.
This is great please do more swim through videos like this
Awesome video buddy 🤙🏼 🤙🏼 thank you
Helo again James. I dove the Spiegal last year for my advanced training. I'm diving it again this Monday with rainbow. This time I'm more focused on actually enjoying the dive. You had said in another video everyone should go out and do like 25 dives before try to move up to the next level. I'm pretty close to 40 and would definitely like to learn from you how to be a more streamlined diver. Great vid by the way
That bow shot was great
Haha, I just posted my comment on Critter Hunter’s video, oops. I really love this tour of the Spiegal Grove, great job. It was awesome how you just zipped through Snoopy’s Corridor, too much fun. As always great content on your channel, keep on keepin on 🤙.
James, can't wait to get back to her in November. Nice to see bubbles only coming from your second stage and not your ear!
Hi James, glad to see you back in the water … guess your ear problem has been sorted … looks a great dive … thanks for the video 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
James, Great Dive Video and Information. If I am ever in Florida, I would love to do this dive as the Spiegel Grove looks awesome
Lost my friend doing a dive here in 2013. Rip Joe.
Thanks for the video. Get the left handed handle for the scooter. Easy to install and a game changer for max control and min fatigue
Amazing video! Can't wait to get back out to Top Dog for more training dives. I'd love to see a similar video of The Duane.
Served Upon the Grove. She served her country well.
Wish we had a wreck like that here in The Netherlands. Looks awesome. Just bought a DPV as well. They're fun.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I hope to hit that wreck this year. BTW, I've also had issues with Mares weight pocket clips; even on new BCDs. They're inherently defective.
I got my AOW certification this summer specifically to dive sites like this. I love diving onto shipwrecks but many of the best ones lay at or below the 60’ threshold.
Dives like this make me want to go tec!!!
We can help with that...!
Wow!
I'm going to dive in Florida for the better part of 3 weeks in March 2023. I hope to be able to dive the Oriskeney, The Spiegel Grove, The Vandenburg, as well as some other wrecks along with some other good dive sites.
I've already spoken with Horizen Divers in Key Largo. I'm looking forward to it. Maybe I'll bump into you on the dive boat!
So, there are dives you can do in this wreck with a single cylinder and no deco that include swim throughs? That’s wicked!.
Yes, you can absolutely do this dive on a single tank, but without a DPV you shouldn't expect to see the whole thing. I suggest you focus on the bow or the stern. You could also stay around the deck and avoid going all the way to the bottom. That'll save you 20-30 feet of depth and give you more bottom time. There's not much to see past the gunnels. My 2 cents...
It's my favorite FL wreck too! LET'S DIVE!
Great video. I have dove the Spiegel several times and each dive is different and special! I have also had a couple dives cancelled because the current was ripping! One suggestion - have more footage facing forward rather than the diver (just my preference). Love your channel!
Super cool video. I stander my open weather course in a couple weeks. Can’t wait! Are those regular Husky work gloves form home depot or are they designed for diving?
I am contemplating wether to dive in pompano or key largo, I really want to see a lot of wrecks between 50-90 ft. which one is better diving?
Were you diving alone on these dives?
Great Video! Awesome job! You were flying around the ship! What are your challenges using the scooter? I would think keeping your depth constant would be challenging.
I can see doing some training with you in the near future…!!!
Hehe, you played with your dogs before you made the video, didn't you? :D
And would you have a problem with the purge button if you go full speed? I heard from my instructor that he made a drift dive with his class and because he went with his face against the drift to see his students the drift would push his purge button 🤔
And a funny story, I once lost some of my weights at a dive site without really noticing it and the following day as we dove the same divesite again I found them under the wreck as I was looking for fishes which like to hide there :D
What dive agencies do you recommend for the wreck dives around Miami?
Sorry for the full video tec question. I just saw something about deco models like bend and mend and the bubble model and I'm wondering from a practical purpose what do you use for deco models?
easy restocking of the shop when scouring the sand down there :p
Hi James, thanks for the cool video how do you rate the black tip and which version is this one that you using? Looking for something to help me as i only have one fully functioning leg
🤩🔥👌
Love the S.G. I’ve dived it twice and each time said “We could do a week right here!”
I have to say, that there should have been way more GoPro forward views of the wreck and far less “Here’s James’s face as he talks about the wreck.” Most of the time we were looking at you, not looking at the aspect of the wreck you were describing. IMHO
Would like to do it one day. I go to Cyprus regularly and dive Zenobia, which is a similar size, in a similar depth and only 1 mile offshore. However, the sinking was not intentional.
What's the current like
Heading to Key Large and plan on diving the Spiegel Grove. With so many dive on this site, what NITROX mix would you recommend for this dive?
28-30% is ideal.
James i just bought the mares pocket for my backplate set up and listen from u in this video that are absolute crap. Please can u tell me if u recomend to change it?
👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
Just sets his Deco bottle down without tying it off, and . Hey, where's your buddy/team at? ... Oh yeah, I forgot this dude's the best diver on the Internet...it's everyone else that sucks.
Wow is that what you think of is respect. Just be nice. It’s called editing I want to see the wreck not how to tie a knot or work a clip
James this appears to be a solo dive. Ever thought about doing a vid on true solo diving as opposed to the “instabuddy” one you did?
James - Ever done a night dive on it?
#askdiversready
I was diving in Egypt last week and really struggled to attach my Yoke 1st stage to the tanks there without it leaking. Is there different types or sizes of yoke fittings? I almost had to over-tighten the rear screw each dive just to ensure it didn't leak. By the end of the trip I was so frustrated that I am now seriously considering converting my system to DIN to just avoid any hassle on future trips.
Keep up the amazing content, I've learnt a lot from your videos.
Great question! Answer coming in this month's channel update video!
Maybe some day the Russians will donate a typhoon sub for a dive wreck and perhaps the US could do the same for one of its older nuke subs. Both are likely rusting in naval shipyards
Ruleeezzz
Hey i went to pro dive and became an instructor in 6 weeks......so im just saying Apecks ? Bro Oms, Halcyon, and Poseidon Jetstreams all the way! And i will give a shout out to Scuba Pro Mk series. Hear war! Lol
Can you da a product review of the Apex Exotech BCD?
We will try to add it to the list of reviews. Dive safe!
@@DiversReady thx
Wreck dives, it is most of the dives in WA, just 40 instead of 80 degrees.
My instructor said he has dived this about 24 times and still hasn't seen the entire thing
Two divers died months apart in 2021 on this wreck . Did they ever said why ?
Really? It's not on the Wikipedia page.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Spiegel_Grove_(LSD-32)#Deaths
Why didn't you turn your camera around so we could see the wreck?
Thanks James :) I really enjoyed this :) If I could give you extra thumbs up to cancel out the thumbs down I would. Cheers
