  • Content Advisory: This story addresses the human rights violation of female genital mutilation or cutting, FGM/C. Viewers should watch at their own discretion. The story is not appropriate for children.
This visually stunning story from Umme uses the language of metaphor to explore what it’s like to have a memory of FGM/C that marks a turning point in identity development. When Umme was still a girl, they were cut in a medical setting, under anesthesia, with no understanding of why. Today, they grapple with the imposter syndrome of living a life their uncut self could have lived, free of questions of gender and belonging- an identity they feel they "stole" from a more deserving version of themselves, one they love, hate, and envy for being free from this story.
This story was created in a Voices to End FGM/C (www.voicestoen...) workshop led by StoryCenter (www.storycenter...), Sahiyo (sahiyo.org/), and Asian Women's Shelter (www.sfaws.org) and funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime.
