The reason players were “dead on their feet” is because they couldn’t retain the possession. They were chasing the ball. Better opposition had better technical midfielders all comfortable on the ball.
Because the media basically overhyped the team so much that the players thought all they had to do was turn up media puts to much pressure on England at every tournament same with fans as soon as you lot win one game you swear your the favourites to win it
Game management, not being able to keep calm and cool heads when chasing the game. All the players seemed to panic and start to think about what the reaction back home would be if they were to lose. Rooney dropping deeper to spray passes about to no-one or into areas Iceland could easily deal with. Really needed a cool head to just get them to play in a humble way, be patient and focus.

I think he's right. I'm 41 and in my life time the only occasions I can remember England stopping key players from performing is Italy 90 (lucky against Cameroon in the quarters never stopped r.miller with others in that team but) great performance against w.germany no one could have asked anymore; Euro 96 outstanding against the Dutch and kept Germans quite like Berfhoff; sammer etc in semis; France 98 what a performance against Argentina, no one could have asked of any more and then limped into the semis in Russia during a very diluted tournament (i.e no Holland, Italy etc). All other tournaments England have failed miserably at containing marque players, never mind doing the simple things like defending corners properly 😡
Iceland channelled the spirit of Greece that night. Didn't exactly play exciting confrontational football but they we're extremely disciplined, worked like team and had each others backs and also had luck on their side because our keeper had paper hands.
As a Liverpool fan, I saw first hand how inept Hodgson was. He led us to consecutive defeats at Anfield against Blackpool and Northampton Town. Then later gets rewarded with the England job. As soon as he was appointed, I thought : Oh! Dear. This will NOT end well.
Short sighted comment. He was important to the development of St George's Park. They wanted somebody internationally qualified. He'd done a very good job at West Brom prior to that. It's not a coincidence that Dan Ashworth followed him too. Very talented setup there.
@@Symmetryful Short sighted comment. If anyone thinks doing "a very good job at West Brom" is prime reason to get the England job then THAT is the exact problem we have. Listen again, he lost at Anfield to Northampton and Blackpool then had a go at the fans. I didn't say he got the England job on the back of his Liverpool performances, but at a higher level he was clearly out of his depth. The man had Gerrard and Torres at his disposal but lasted only six months, andafter leading Liverpool to their most embarrassing defeat, he later done the same to England.
@@thehalfeatendoughnut1798 It's not though. I think you could argue on the basis that his playing style wasn't what England wanted but you can't argue he didn't deserve it on the basis that he managed West Brom. Most top managers start out at smaller clubs, even Klopp himself who took a second division German side to the higher reaches of football. The issue is, as I've stated, irrelevant to pitch matters anyway - someone like Redknapp wouldn't be intelligent enough to oversee the development of St George's Park, it should be bluntly stated.
@@Symmetryful But Klopp is a modern day manager with modern ideas. Hodgson is a dinosaur who refused to change and was subsequently outwitted by Iceland. I’m from the US, but a fan of England football. I think the issue starts with the individual player’s obsession over their own club. In a separate interview, I remember Ferdinand and Gerard owning up to the reality that players were sitting at different tables while spending time with the England National team. They spoke about an issue with legitimately building the team chemistry off the pitch. Here in the US, we don’t have that problem because the MLS is already a joke. Players have passion for their club but it’s incomparable to the passion I see players have in England for their own clubs. It’s a double edged sword.
Michael Marando Michael, as Liverpool fan (from the city) I can honestly say the main issue is fans don’t care as much about their national side as they do their premier league team. The Premier League and the Champions League are so far ahead of the National game that we don’t care. The players also don’t care. It is a redundant form of football. The quality is dire and as such it is not that important. Also.....players play 70 game seasons, they play qualifiers they always win, they arrive at the tournaments and are exhausted. We play more than any European league.

We've got quite a tough group at the euros next summer, having Croatia, Czech republic and then likely Norway/Serbia. It will be much harder than playing against Tunisia and Panama lol. We then may have to face either France/Germany/Portugal in the round of 16 if we win the group. Its gonna be quite tricky tbh, I'm a bit worried about us defensively.
No word of a lie, I had 5 a side the night before this and actually said to my teammates it would be 2-1 Iceland. Bloody wish I'd put a bet on that now.
As much as Southgate isnt an amazing manager, look at how fast he changed the team, this loss was such a huge shock it really made a big different in the national team, a wake up call honestly.
That is why that song, 'Southgate, You're The One' became so popular and I think it is that first line which rings so true to fans: "Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape and I cannot forget". Although, you should look into what happened behind the scenes of the FA over the last 10 years and you will see that it wasn't quite a quick turn around as it seems. It was actually has been year 6 to 9 of a 10 year plan that Gareth Southgate and Sir Trevor Brooking put together in 2012 and worked out. Basically they realised the issue was with developing players so went about changing everything at grassroots, academies and youth teams. Then helped change the set up to line him up as the next in line to the throne to be the next England Manager. However, they predicted that their plan would show fruit in 2018/2020. Roy Hodgson resigned 2 years earlier than expected leading to a suspicious chain of events which went off course and then back on course again. (If you do want a full timeline I put together a blog post. The link with spaces so RUclips doesn't delete it: www. lifeassportycb. WordPress. Com )
And here we are after 5 years and Gareth Southgate. This should be a reminder of the amazing work he has done and the respect that should be attached to his name after leading us to 2 Semi finals!
Tbf even Kane on corners etc we still should’ve beaten them but just though we could come out in second gear they got two goals from us falling asleep and then shut up shop and England just seemed stunned worst football moment of my life
Kane on corners was an issue, but for me the biggest factor, I think was the Iceland crowd, They were formidable, I think a lot of our players bricked it because of them, the unison chant was quite potent, and unusual, it should not phase pro's but, i must admit you could feel it, felt more like a pre battle dark ages kind of deal, powerful and I watched it on TV lmao
In the end I think the defeat did England good. We see it as failure, but I see as it learning. Since then England have really improved and we took a serious look at ourselves and got to semi finals of 2018 world cup. It was embarrassing yes, but in my eyes it was a harsh lesson learned and we improved in so many areas since then like taking penalties, winning our opening game and actually playing as a damn team!
2004 and 2006? He's talking like England 'fell off a cliff' in the semis or a final. That was the 1/4 final (First game after the groups in the euros) and the same, albeit second game after the groups in the world cup.
I was on b wing in HMP Brixton with about 50 men watching a 12 inch box tv, you could of heard a pin drop at the end of the game, I was fuming for weeks couldn't even talk about it got out in the august after 3 years, so wasnt all bad.
Puts it into perspective about how bad England's management was in Euro 2016 when 2 years later, we got to a World Cup semi final and then another semi final a year later.
Its not failings, its Englerland's natural level where they are now. 1966 was a fluke. Not been to another major final. Look at that compared to Italy, Germany, Argentina - even the likes of the Czechs and Soviets have appeared in more finals. It also doesn't help your league when 63% of the players in the PL are foreign. Not really helping out your player base.
G Neville hit the nail in the head. The England players always look leggy when they come to summer tournaments. We have improved immensely and 2018 World Cup proved that but even then thru that tournament we were getting very tired.
England players are mentally weak. They can't handle the pressure and expectation of playing for England in big games. The 2nd half against Iceland was the epitome of this, they collapsed mentally. Couldn't even make basic 10 yard passes. All they were thinking about were the headlines when they got home. England literally haven't beaten a noted side in a knockout game since 1996 lol. And that was when we had home advantage. Argentina, Brazil, Italy (twice), Portugal (twice), Germany, Croatia, Uruguay. 0 for 9 in knockout games against quality opposition. Any many wouldn't even include Croatia in that.
lmao they are still bad, 2018 was pure luck, they defeated Panama and Tunisia (last minute penalty lol) and then won against colombia on penalties and Sweden....they face two good teams, they lost 3 times (Belgium x2, Croatia) They cant compare to France, Spain, Germany
I can explain england never do well in tournaments before it even starts they think they are going to win it and when there knocked out it's a shock to themselves and no one else.
45HOT5 444HEADZ that’s true. But you can’t deny England have come on leaps and bounds since losing to Iceland and hogdson left. All the haters just hate to see it. Big things are coming.
I can tell u what happened Gary. Yous overlooked Iceland and thought yous would sail to the next round. Joe Hart ranting in the in the tunnel "ITS OUR NIGHT" was the cherry on the cake. Iceland, a team of fishermen showed how the world how you represent your country!
A midfield three of Dier, Dele and an over-the-hill Rooney was curtains. All three can't control a midfield. We have always had midfield players who can control matches, who are not fashionable, either sat on the bench or not even picked. Instead they go for guys who catch headlines or score a few goals. We have never valued controlling midfield players as high as they do on the continent. Players like Carrick, Scholes were barely ever consistently used properly. In Italy or Spain they would have had 80-100 caps minimum just controlling the matches. In 2016 they had plenty of central midfield players(less fashionable) who could have controlled the matches.
Why had players in the squad that were on the shelf for the entire season and inform players that didn’t get picked it was like let’s look at who plays for clubs higher in the table and throw them in.
They totally changed the team from the qualifiers to accommodate Kane and Alli and ended up playing Rooney out of position as a result. Also Hodgson transmits nervousness to the team.

English4Football: adding some more meat to the bone as if it were, Ryan Giggs for me put it best when he said, "when I watch England play there seems to be a lack of ability to simply solve problems on the pitch" when the ref blows the whistle.
He got the England job on the backing of what he did at West Brom actually lol
We are light years behind the best in Europe on and off the pitch. St George's Park should have happened years ago. Money has been flooding into the game for nearly 30 years yet we were still appointing backward looking coaches.

Michael Marando
Michael, as Liverpool fan (from the city) I can honestly say the main issue is fans don’t care as much about their national side as they do their premier league team.

Completely agree, just look at England's inability to get the best of Gerrard or get him working in combination with other superstar mid fielders.
Remember this vividly

Since then England have really improved and we took a serious look at ourselves and got to semi finals of 2018 world cup. It was embarrassing yes, but in my eyes it was a harsh lesson learned and we improved in so many areas since then like taking penalties, winning our opening game and actually playing as a damn team!

This aged well.
I clicked on this thinking he was talking about son and lloris
England overhypes their team so much and they disrespected their opponents several times. Funny to watch as an outsider

It's very simple, not enough British players play football abroad. We keep saying the EPL is the best in the world, it isn't.
