@@danielthompson6448 Leave the game against croatia aside. For the qualifiers he had Stevie G, Lampard, Ferdinand, JT, Ashley Cole, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney. All of the above would either have won (or were on the course to winning) the league or champions league at their respective clubs. And although I agree in 2016 there was more talent, none of them had any real experience of winning anything (mainly because most of them came from Tottenham who can't win shite lol). Iceland were good, but england were making schoolboy mistakes- miscontrolling passes, overhitting everything. If iceland defended well fair enough, but the things that england did, with no intervention from the icelandic players, needs to be better. That was the embarrassing part.
Iceland had already beaten the Netherlands twice in the qualification. So when they played England, I won 200 euro's by betting on Iceland. That was great.
Yeah, I've seen my country get beaten by the Icelandic in our stadium. They are better than ever and my country is worse than ever. So yeah, I assumed there was a chance they could beat the English too.
I sit here watching this a day after we’ve gone and beaten the Germans 2-0 at Wembley. Gary, Alan and Rio were all still pundits for that game and I bet when they recorded this they never thought we would be the exciting team we are now. Makes me feel optimistic for the future of English football!

The best thing being the pragmatic approach of the manager. He tempers the rabid media expectations and by doing relaxes the fans and the players. Does he want to manage the team to victory? Clearly. He’s made massive changes in the England set-up behind the scenes to create the culture in the squad, but international football is ridiculously hard. Sometimes the best teams don’t win and these tournaments don’t happen that often. Might we lose to Denmark or Italy or Spain? Maybe, but he’s getting the team used to being this high up in competitions, he’s able to look at opponents and try to figure them out to get the best out of his squad, and all the players, even big ego ones all understand that THIS manager has a plan. It’s an interesting time to be a fan.
Honestly the main thing that's changed is Southgate. For decades England has been terrible at international football. They say in this video that it's a mystery England doesn't do better because of the class of player - the key has always been the man on the sideline.
@SHIFTY As a team …yes. As players …no. In two successive tournaments now England have had the Golden Boot winner and now the Golden Glove winner. Small steps but a world away from 2016.

Aye. As questionable as Southgate's management is when it comes to super-crunch games like finals and semis, this game puts it all in perspective. I just hope he's learned his lesson and plays to our strengths this time round. Even then, if France beat us and he resigns, who is going to replace him and do a better job?
@@highlander5634 Even if that is true, who is going to replace him? An English manager has still never won the Premier League, and our experiments with foreign managers have been disastrous. Going out to the reigning champions in a tight game is not necessarily a failure, and we're at the point where any team can beat any other team on their day even if we beat France.
Oh Yeah I forgot about that!!!! WTF was that about???? Was there ever any type of explanation for that I can’t work out any reason for your number 1 target player for crosses, corners and through Balls to be taking a fuckin corner….

So with this still in the back of our Minds for the Croatia Game and kick off He gave the ball away literally first Time He touched it and We were fuckin hell Sterling…. I don’t admittedly I was wrong and Sterling is on 🔥🔥
Has he?? Why didn't he play well in the final again then? He never turns up in big games. Champions league final the same, FAcup semi-finals etc...couldn't even take a pen but then again 12yards is too far out for him to score isn't it.

Remember watching this when it aired and hearing Shearer's comments about the Premier League were absolutely spot on. It was the foreign players and managers that made it exciting. Slightly changed now though as think there's more better England players coming through.
Yes, england is coming up with much better players and in more quantity. Probably the results of that foreign explosion and its influence on the game for youngsters. Players like mount, phoden, walker, chelsea right back forgot his name, declan rice, sterling, saka and more recently elliot or palmer in city, even ward prowse , more modern players with superior technique to their previous generation.
Who knew that after this we'd be in both a World Cup semi final and a Euros final, even though we lost to both Croatia and Italy on both occasions, but it was better than what we did in 2016 and England have done us proud over the last two tournaments. COME ON ENGLAND!!! 👍🏻🏴❤

If we played each other 10 times do you think you'd win 3? Arrogant English blah blah blah........we beat you because we've better players. You know it because it's obvious! All our players play in same leagues and are far less technical than foreign players because of the way they're trained from youth as opposed to foreign training and emphasis. That's why they hold the ball better.....not genetics!! And England are better than scots Welsh and Irish because of bigger catchment/population. Your fans have a chip on shoulder because of same mentality in leagues. Everyone hates the bigger clubs. England are the biggest club .........and small man syndrome hurts boys. True true
“If you go into a tournament and you don’t know your best team, you don’t know your best formation. Then you’re running into trouble.” Southgate has made this ‘problem’ his greatest strength !
The difference with Southgate is that, unlike Roy Hodgson, Southgate knows what his system and formation is and is tactical adept enough to tweak the formation according to the opposition. There's a difference between rotation and making it up as you go along, which is what Roy was doing in Euro 2016.
@W2L Roy was alright up until Euro 2016. What I find strange is how we won 10/10 in the Euro qualifiers only to crash out in such a humiliating fashion in 2016. I have nothing personal against Roy, I just find his selections in Euro 2016 to be strange.
@Jay PorterTeams that host tournaments tend to do well, that is true. I do wonder though if you said about France in 2016 or Portugal in 2004 'they are hosts so they haven't done that well' or anything to that effect. And no our run hasn't been that 'easy' we played Germany in RO16 and a good Danish team in the semi. There is no easy in international football. Look at Greece beating Portugal in 2004 final and France losing the 2016 final to Portugal when Ronald had to come off early.
…. This is the game that gave us the Gareth Southgate era, which has been a HUGE improvement. And today, on the eve of a Euros, what do England do? Lose to Iceland! It’s spooky.

Even through your point on Steve McLaren's choice selection clearly showed he was the worst. And even if the rest of the squad was mediocre in 2007-2008, it wasn't bad enough to not qualify for euros.

Yes, it's coming to England!
Yes, when we go back and watch all of England's performances over the last 35 years, with the exception of Mexico '86, Italia '90 and Euro '96, England's inadequacies are evident in comparison to today. England were either cheated, underachieved due to not playing as a team or defended quite poorly. Southgate to be honest, though cautious and pragmatic, deserves a medal for what he has achieved in the time he has been manager and should not be going anywhere soon, even if England do not win Euro 2020/21.

Amazing how far we’ve come in the last 5 years
The best thing being the pragmatic approach of the manager.
We still have won nothing.
@SHIFTY

Slightly better definitely
Yes, england is coming up with much better players and in more quantity. Probably the results of that foreign explosion and its influence on the game for youngsters. What's that make Scotland, Ireland and Wales? One decent tournament and the Welsh think they're billy big bollox! When's las time ANY of you beat England?
