  • Why do we go to Mass every Sunday? Is it because of what we "get out of it"? Is it the way it makes us feel? Is it out of love for God? Or something even deeper and more profound?
Today, Fr. Mike explains the Church's teaching on Sunday Mass obligation, and why this is the way that God has asked us to worship him.
What does God want this Advent? Simple. He wants you. He wants a personal encounter with you. This year, journey through Advent with "Rejoice! Finding Your Place in the Advent Story," and learn about the places, people, and events that shaped the story of the very first Advent and shape our own lives today: tinyurl.com/ydmgasls

Hey 3 days ago we met someone whose name was Mohamed and he told me that after Catholic young preachers talked to him about Jesus he felt the holy spirit the love of God in his life and he changed his name to Michael and I though of father Mike for a second. Praise God for this conversion 🙌🏼

How do you differentiate the feeling from calm as a result of meditation? or the feeling felt after hearing a beautiful song? Is it their calm, deep, authoritative voice? Can you try to replicate that setting with the exception of God, will you feel the same? or is it in the word itself God? when I said God is it the same intense feeling or did the setting at that time helped it? I wonder where that feeling is coming from. 🤔🙂

From what I know people can get into trance with just repititive chanting or beating of the drum without reference to a specific god but just a 'spiritual realm' Fascinating! 😃
Would you believe other religions too on the basis of that feeling? I'm morbidly curious. 🤔🙂

@@terminusadquem6981 Good questions. I am also curious and it is too bad you didn't get a response. It seems a lot of believers feel and hear things and then attribute it to god telling them something by default. I would like to know how they know that's what it is and where it's really coming from.

I’m a Protestant considering becoming a Catholic, don’t even know where to begin. Where do I start? Can I attend Catholic mass as a Protestant? Can I go to confession? I recently had a dream where Mary appeared and told me to pray the rosary and I am, and I’m already seeing massive peace in my heart. What next?

      1. Yes attend mass
      2. Attend RCIA at a local parish
      3. Receive communion and go to confession only after you are a practicing Catholic who completed RCIA and got confirmed in the church.
      4. Don’t feel left out about not receiving communion. Even as a confirmed catholic, there’s times where we can’t/don’t receive because we haven’t confessed our sins (especially our mortal sins) yet in confession.
      5. I’m delighted to hear of the start of your conversion. Thanks be to God.

It really hit me when Father said it matters to other people if we go. One time, when I was camping, I went to Mass at a strange church. I looked around and wondered who would care if I hadn't gone and would anyone miss me if my seat were empty. They didn't know me. Suddenly, I had a revelation - not really a voice, but I knew it was from God - telling me, kind of showing me, how different it would be if I were not there. I realized my presence truly mattered. Very strange feeling, but profound and humbling.

It's helped me a lot and humbled me. There's so many things I was doing that were keeping me from being in grace. We are all sinner's. Always humble yourself and return too confession. It's a wonderful gift.

As a disabled adult who struggles cuz I often look fine and also overestimate myself even though I should know better…
I struggle with missing mass and then beating myself up for it too.
I haven’t been able to go to mass in a couple months, and when is see the Sunday masses streamed and posted form Father Mike, I’d feel so embarrassed and guilt-ridden that I’d scroll away quickly.
This past Sunday I watched Father Mike’s mass (tho I watched it around 6PM and I’m central time sooo… I could’ve been better with timing)
I’m so glad I did! Last Sunday especially I needed to hear it. I cried from the beauty and timing.
And I pray I’ll be able to find my way back to at least the online masses and eventually I want to get back to in-person at my extended family’s parish (that I hope to become part of and eventually attend daily mass too)
I’ve been praying so much for help from God lately. I want to do better, I want to be better.

I am just getting better after about 7 years of a chronic illness. I had to stop going to Mass and began online Mass. I was considering asking for someone to bring me the Eucharist.
Then the Pandemic hit. My life did not change one iota. It was hard for me to believe that everyone was home like me. But there you have it.
Still have not returned because we only have Masses that you must sign up for ahead of time, and the group is now mixed with vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Because I am not completely well, I do not feel I should be among the unvaccinated in large groups at this point.
I don’t think you have anything to feel guilty about. Father is talking about the able bodied not attending.

@@pjsmith4369 If you would like to be physically present at Mass but are concerned about crowding, try attending a weekday Mass where there are fewer people and they are more spread out. Also, you are in church for a shorter time. I don’t mean that this would ‘substitute’ for your Sunday obligation, since if you are unable to go on Sunday your aren’t obliged to do so. Just that if you want to get back to attending Mass this might be a way. Whether you are vaccinated or not, do what you can to protect yourself such as masking, distancing, supplements, anti-viral meds, etc. You need to take care of your health. But come to Mass if you can find a way to do so safely. Fr Mark Goring’s daily Masses at 9:00am at St Mary’s church in Ottawa, Canada were my mainstay when our churches were closed and they are still broadcast live on RUclips.

This is something I have trouble with. I have had problems with social anxiety, to one degree or another, my entire life. Going to Mass every Sunday, let alone on time every Sunday can be difficult. In the past I have forced myself to go despite my feeling anxious. I can understand the real grace I recieve, and the Glory I can give to God but I feel like it results in the opposite of what God really wants for me or for anyone because of the added anxiety which can remain with me for some time afterward. I think ultimately it comes down to not wanting to develop an association with my anxiety and my worship.

Praying that things will be better for you someday, best of luck.

Rob, because of Father Mike, I went to Catholic Mass for the first time in almost 20 years. I'm a returning Catholic. That first mass, going by myself, I had a lot of anxiety as the "new guy," and wasn't sure if I could remember everything. I was nervous around large groups of people, especially ones I did not know. The Catholic Church I went to was almost 50 years old, well established, and one where everyone knows everybody. Having been raised Catholic, I still remembered a lot and got through Mass (didn't do Communion as I needed confession first). In the end, I felt at home. I felt warmth, relief, and thankfulness that I returned. I felt this is where I need to be every Sunday. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. I overcame the anxiety, and knowing I was sacrificing time for God, helped me overcome it much easier. It took a couple more Sundays for the anxiety to be at a low, more manageable level for me. It's not easy but it can be done. Every Sunday is an invitation. I guess my punchline would be: "If Jesus Christ invited me to Mass, would it matter if there was 1 person or 1 thousand?" Thank you for sharing your post. Anxieties are high among many these days. I hope my words, and others' here helps. Many blessings Rob, take care.

I’m no expert, but I’ve been told that for a sin to be mortal, it must be done with full knowledge and deliberate consent. If something prevents you from going to Mass, such as anxiety, then that can mean that you don’t fully consent to missing Mass. Not to say that you should just skip Mass or skip things because of your anxiety; no, the hope is that you can find help/counseling/spiritual guidance to overcome your anxiety! But in the meantime, know that God is merciful and He will help you through this. Praying for you 🙏

I work as a missionary youth minister, and we had planned to do a lesson on the Mass last night. Lo and behold, this video came out. The way Father explains the importance of the Mass and the reason for the Sunday obligation is so clear and loving, I couldn't think of a better way to explain it to my teens. I ended up using this video during part of the night, and many of them really liked it. One of them told one of my volunteers, "I never realized the Mass wasn't meant mainly for us." It was such a fruitful night. What providence!

@@terminusadquem6981 We believe that God is a God of justice and of mercy. If a child does something wrong without knowing it's wrong, how will the father judge compared to a child who does something wrong knowing full well that it's wrong? Justice would say that the second child, though committing the same offence, has the greater guilt and should be held to a stronger standard, right? Because they committed the offence even after having been taught

I have to preface with, I know I cant speak for God, but I truly believe that God knows our circumstances, and understands that missing Mass during sickness is not the same as missing Mass because you "just don't feel like it today" which is truly sinful. I've also heard a priest say that if for some reason you have to work on Sundays, you can make up for it during Saturday evening Mass. Also, people who are disabled, elderly, or very ill, can still get the Eucharist through a church ministry that distributes it. Hoping these tips will help.

Well said Father! I think it's important to add that if someone rarely or never attends Mass, it's incredibly easy for them to forget about the faith. Going to Mass each Sunday serves as a constant reminder to keep God in our lives. So if you skip Mass one week, that could lead you to skipping multiple weeks, months, or even years. Then eventually you may not even give God a second thought. This is incredibly dangerous. So please, never miss Mass unless it is for a reason beyond your control (like illness or a broken down car).

A priest only visits my area twice a month. The other Sundays it is a 4 hour round trip and frankly, I can't afford the gas. I pray at home and observe a day of rest but it's also stressful to think I'm in a state of mortal sin over this difficulty.

Every Holy Mass, heard with devotion, we receive in our souls marvelous effects, abundant spiritual graces.
When we receive the holy communion at mass we experience great joy & strength. It's the constant reminder of God's love for us.
When the Mass is being celebrated, the sanctuary is filled with countless angels, who adore Jesus Christ.🌻
The angels surround and help the priest when he is celebrating Mass.

Every high school teacher/subscriber who plays his videos in class may reach 150 or more students every semester who may not subscribe.
Thank you Jesus for Fr. Mike, and God please bless his ministry and outreach to students of all ages. Even if we don't all subscribe (Fr. Mike forgive us.) Amen.

Yes, I owe God everything. As He said, “without Me you can do nothing.” . It’s one special hour for me to love Him, thank Him, remember Him. Now that I’m old, it’s harder and I live alone. Some days when I feel weak I’m afraid to go because I have to get back home and I might feel worse. (I also think I’m self indulged thus lazy). So sometimes I’m don’t go and it eats me up. I wish I knew if I’m deceiving myself to get out of some masses. I always love being there but fear for physical reasons keep me home some times. Any thoughts? I just don’t know. Am I being prudent or frightened?

Is there anyone who goes to your church that could bring you? Please ask the office. My aunt who didn't drive was brought to church for many years by a sweet couple. They counted as a blessing to them. But if not, if you feel unsafe going on your own, you are not obligated to go. Give God worship and praise on Sunday where you are when you cannot attend in person.

Try to fight the fear, that feeling is coming from the enemy, the enemy is a liar and right now he has you where he wants you...caged up at home so you can't recieve Our Lord's mercy and graces!! Tell Satan to get behind you and ask God and blessed Mary for an increase of faith and understanding and especially courage to resist the devil's tactics!! How dare him rob you of your joy! Take baby steps and keep yourself surrounded by good books and find a Bible group in the church. God Bless you, I pray God wraps His arms around you!

I had just graduated college. Throughout my youth and college years, there were fellowship opportunities after Mass. As an adult, there was no fellowship for my age groups. Mass became the only time I got a gold star. So about two years after college I felt so alone even at Mass.(I never felt alone at Mass, before this time) That I actually told God that this was the last Mass I would be at. Well, never ever pray or say that anywhere. The following week, I had an urge to go to Mass. My parents also mentioned they were going and that I am going with them. The priest stated that my age group this Homily you will not understand and don't listen to it. I tried so hard to hear what the priest was saying and I realize what I did to God. Afterwards, I was invited to join two ministries by members of the Parish. To this day I still go to Mass on Sunday.

From what the Catechism says if you don't attend Mass on the Lord's Day as well as other holy days of obligations it violates the Commandment You Shall Keep the Lord's Day Holy. Which here in the United States there are five holy days of obligation which may or may not land upon a Sunday or if they land upon a Saturday or Monday would be observed on Sunday instead except for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary being that the Lord's Day during Advent supercedes other Solemnities. The five days are the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, the Solemnity of All Saints Day, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, and the Solemnity of the Nativity of Jesus (Christmas). Solemnities are major feast days most are celebrated on Sundays even been moved to Sundays like Corpus Christi, the Ascension of Jesus, the Epiphany of Jesus.
As for the Vigil Mass the evening before the actual Solemnity or Lord's Day if you attend this Mass it counts as fulfilling your obligation. People should still be aware that refraining from doing work unless it's something like caring for the elderly or sick that you are still obligated to rest and spend time with your family on Sundays and holy days obligation even if you attended the Vigil Mass the evening before.
There are excused absences such as if your sick, taking care of children, having to work because of living in extreme poverty, etc. to name a few.
Any Catholic who is a Catholic should own a Catechism of the Catholic Church. It's a book that contains centuries of knowledge pertaining to the doctrine of the Church in regards to the faith and moral teachings.

To tell the truth, I come from a Catholic background and I remember, as a youth, that the Mass was incredibly boring. It was unbearable. Left the Roman Church and became a Christian. Came to believe in the Lord Jesus as my Lord and Savior for the first time in my life at 22. Am now 68. Am so blessed. Have never regretted my decision.

I struggle with this. I go, but it's tougher now--I don't feel like I'm getting much at times, sometimes what I hear in the homily upsets me. What I do is just start praying the Rosary when the thoughts are too negative. I'd guess most would discourage that but it keeps me there and in a calm state when it gets to that point. I still don't like the changes in music and prayer from probably over a decade ago. Harder to sing, other was easier, more harmonious.

I'm really grateful you explained the underlying reasons why Catholics refer to Sunday Mass as an obligation.
As a Protestant who has grown to appreciate a lot of Catholicism, I can see a fuller meaning behind it now, rather than just a rule based requirement.
However, to consider it a mortal sin is simply not scriptural and seems very manipulative, unless it is plainly taught and I've missed it somehow?
No, we should not forsake the assembling of believers, but His Word never says that we are in danger of eternal damnation if we don't attend a worship service.
What date was this rule added?

I'm working on getting to Mass more often. I love the Mass and God knows how much I long to be there. I almost long to be at Mass as much as Jesus earthly return. To me it's almost the same and it is for now. I wish every week was the Triduum but just like life the liturgical seasons are sometimes solemn then radiant but I mostly love the weekday Mass without all the "fanfare" if you will. A simple sweet First Friday Exposition with the following Mass. The Mass is so special with prayers songs and readings. The elevation is my favorite part but I must say the quiet times of the Mass are the best during the weekday Mass when there is no "filler music" if you will. It is then I can pray in silence: during the consecration as the priest quietly prays, "Lord hear his prayers;" after the elevation when Jesus arrives, "My Lord and my God..;" and when the priest receives I ask for special graces upon him for his service. After Mass I kneel and pray "Stay With Me Jesus." Please pray for my situation to heal (it's not medical) so I can return to Mass all the time. Right now I am looking forward to Mass in Fatima in a few days. I hope I can get to confession so I can receive. The last time I went to confession the priest never showed. Father Mike you priests need to be there at confession. He was probably involved with something of equally great importance. PS It wasn't Father Mike but wouldn't it be great if he were your confessor.

I agree Father, but why were the Masses suspended during the pandemic, or worse an RSVP to even attend? I’m 78 and Mass is not the same anymore. No holy Warner font, pews ribboned off, and asked participants. I and others watched televised Masses because we thought we’d catch COVID, and denied the sacraments. I think people got used to not going and now wonder why they need to go back!

I am so happy that you explained that while we are at Mass, it is not to “ feel “ anything.
I hear other Catholics ( mostly the Latin going ones ) say they feel differently going to the Latin Mass. They feel joy, reverence, etc.
In my 68 years of attending Mass ( and the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostym ) I have never felt anything.
I don’t expect to feel anything. I am there because all Catholics are obligated to attend Sunday Mass.
Emotion is not part of it, although perhaps, some people may feel joy, during singing, which is normal. Music can heighten our emotions.
It is a commandment from God. I believe in the real presence, but have never expected anything, except that God knows I am trying my best to please Him by following Him obediently.
