Bodega Cat Battle Rages Citywide | Going In with Brian Vines | Ep 405

- Bodega Cats have graced your instagram feed and your late night ice cream runs, but they are a big investment for your local bodega owner. The Department of Health and Hygiene restricts any animal, other than a service dog, from being on the premises where food and drinks are being sold, and the fines for having a bodega cat can be anywhere from $200 to $2000. Does this force Brooklyn’s Bodega owners to fire their furry friends? Fur-ggedaboutit!

If you don't have a Bodega Cat you are gonna have Bodega Mice.
The government is full of rats who want to see stores destroyed rather than saved
Bodega cats should be made legal!! No fine for giving these cute babies a home! Bodega cats RULE!!
its such a ny thing too, attracts tourists
@@Axoe It's a shame that our local convenience stores in Australia don't have resident cats as mice and rats are a massive problem here, especially during drought years. Also they're amazing friendly animals who make for such a more positive shopping experience.
It doesn't make sense because hotels (like the Algonquin Hotel) are allowed to have a cat.
Legalize bodega cats!!
Americans walk around their house with shoes on, yet they act like this is unsanitary🤦♂️
No American i know walks around there house with shoes on😐
@@nathanbeaubrun6751I was actually addressing Americans who lived above rocks, and weren’t anime weirdos. Sorreh
@@nathanbeaubrun6751 a few of my friends keep their shoes on in the house.
@@condorsouthernlands4730 Nice try.
I’m always barefoot in my house.
I worked where only about 10% of our inventory was food, and rodents were still such a problem. They got into everything, clothing, stuffed animals, paper products, plain plastic items ... most methods of controlling them were ineffective at best, especially if you are moving stock in and out a lot.
This is why cats domesticated themselves in the first place, let them do their job.
They love there cats so much they pay 1500+ in fines 😭
I imagine the guaranteed flow of cat-loving customers balances some of it out.
Well that’s also because if they get a rodent problem people stop coming. So, honestly, 1500+ in fines is a pretty small price to pay.
Cheaper than the fine for having rodents
It's cheaper than tbe fine for having rodents lol
I can't even gonna argue cuz yall are right 😭
There is nothing more New York than the bodega on the corner, and bodegas __have__ to have a bodega cat! The shops in Istanbul and market stalls in Hong Kong are the same - these cats bring levity, liveliness, a sense of community and of course cuteness and affection to wherever they decide to roost!
NYC: has a rat problem
NYC: Let's ban the rats natural predator!!!
AFAIC, bodega cats ARE service animals - they serve the city, the public and the public health by repelling and exterminating vermin (rats and mice)
Keep Bodega cats around. New York, you should learn from Istanbul!!!
Turkish people and Indian people love cats and dogs. People literally leave signs outside that say this water is for cats and dogs, if you use it or steal it, you will go to hell for it. No one touches it LOL.
Istanbul is the oldest major city in the world, and it does not now and never has had a rodent problem. Even the poorer more run down areas will be largely free of pests.
The system works!
feel like it should only be a health violation if the bodega is visibly unclean and the litter isn't properly disposed of. i would rather go to a store with a cat than one with rats.
Exhibit #18,474 why new York city is trash and getting worse by the day. Imagine fining a small business owner, a mom and pop shop providing groceries to a community without a large chain grocery store. Imagine wanting rats and pigeons to live in stores instead of CATS. Wild. Insanity.
"second thing: we love her" aww (it looks like he was mouthing "I love her" at first too lol)
Bodega cats should be a requirement in new york. Its a rat infested city. I see people in fancy restaurants kicking the rats off under the tables
Absolutely ridiculous NYC officials waste their time on this. Keep litter boxes away from the food area and what's the issue? Allergies? I know several people allergic to cats and they're fine as long as they do not physically interact with cats. Out west the only "bodega cats" we have are in old bookstores and landscape suppliers who will deny the cats existence if asked.
I have cat allergies and I own 3 cats lmao. The kind of shopping that people do at a bodega takes 20 minutes, tops. No one is going to go into anaphylactic shock when they're inside a store where a cat lives for 20 minutes (I've never heard of cat allergies causing anaphylactic shock anyway).
@@Krista2882 "I have cat allergies and I own 3 cats" - champ statement right here
@@ahmadtheIED lol! They don't give me allergy symptoms, but I had allergy testing that showed that cats are very high on my list of things i'm allergic to. They told me that I may have become "immune" to my own cats.
@@Krista2882Ahmad gave you a good positive comment, he respects you and says you are a champ for having cats regardless of your allergies, but I understand your comment to. 😎👍👍🏿

In Texas we call them barn cats. We actually go and get the most feral cats we can find at the adoption places and let them loose in our livestock barns and silos. Of course this is only for people who have farms haha. They are perfectly legal here. I love New York, and Los Angeles for that matter. Not all of us Texans are ignorant, I will admit that there are a lot of us who are, but not all of us. Let them have their cats yo! Much love from San Antonio!!!! WE STAND WITH YOU!
Theres a bodega cat across the street he’s retired now the only time he was close to hurting or endangering someone was when he got hit by a car chasing after a female cat
Just make the cat your Anxiety service animal. Blam no fees or the government gonna be violating the Americans with disabilities act
When I was a lil girl, my local bodega cat was named Alley. I loved seeing her n petting her everytime I went to the store
Illegal? With the rat problem they should be REQUIRED!
Set up a donation box to help pay fines and keep the cat. I'm sure the customers will be glad to donate.
START a Go-Fund account for the business owners to pay these fines. Customers and others can contribute just a little each month and that's that!
Cats are cleaner than some people. In Istanbul, Turkey Cats are everywhere, so the rats and mice are nowhere to be found. 😂😂😂
the owners need to get a medical declaration that the cats are the owner's emotional support animals. then ADA (americans with disabilities act) will protect the owners from fines.
@@chlorhex6785 it's called playing the system. and who's to say the cats don't provide emotional support for the people who shop there, knowing their food hasn't been stepped and pee'd on by vermin.
@@chlorhex6785 I agree with this toolman fella, the system will fuck you, so hit that rubber glue. Stop thinking so black & white home-skilly, especially concerning massive monolithic entities like the United States government bureaucracy
County health inspector here. I was recently looking into ADA and our own regulations to answer a question for one of our food facility operators asking about service animals for employees; legitimate in this case as it would be a seeing-eye dog. The ADA does specify that service animals must be allowed in customer areas so long as they do not create a hazard or interfere with the fundamental nature of the service being provided by the business.
ADA does not override state or local regulations that exclude animals from areas for safety reasons. In this case, animals are excluded from “food areas” (prep, cooking, service, etc.) for the purpose of food safety and the ADA does not change that. For a store that sells only pre-packaged foods with no on-site food prep, that is kind of a great area. A service animal might arguably be allowed in that case.
Edit: point being that the ADA is not the end-all be-all that allows animals everywhere. It specifically carves out cases where animals may be excluded for safety reasons, and food safety is the health department’s concern. So a health department may exclude animals from certain areas of a facility and that is not a violation of ADA.
"I'm between the breads" 😺
Bro I want a bodega cat I don’t even live in nyc
I live in the UK and I'd love to have a bodega cat!
Bodega cats are part of NYC's culture. :]
aww this was such a cute vid
Those are purely beautiful felines! Cute dependable nice kitties! 🐆🐈🐈🐈useful
Bodega cat
Duuuude same thing at my dep (queb word for bodega) that cat was part of the store experience then one day gone, owner told me someone complained + an inspector came and... No more cat :(
😪
😭
Small business NYC = shoveling the money out the door as fast as you can get hold of it = $400 for the cat!!
I been paris and the only clean restaurant by river there was the one they got a cat! All others bunch of rats going coming as they where home
so like
adopt the cat
wash the fuckin' thing
clean out rat carcases and cat poop
what's the problem, governor
The fines ought to be for having rats not cats. And the allergy thing is ludicrous. In a smaller space where exposure to cat dander or saliva might be a real concern being around cats might be a problem. But get real -- how much time does one spend shopping in a Bodega? If it's a real problem shop somewhere else.
Pest control companies must have good lobbyists.
Ahhh ... hadn't that of that, you're probably right.
In minnesota everyone that lives on a farm or right on the edge of town near a field has cats. Mice like to hide in fields and barns because they get free grain in there. We call them barn cats and farmers actively go out and look for new barn cats/ adopt cats just to let them live on their property so they can patrol the barn for rodents and keep them out of homes. Cats play a huge part in the health and safety of livestock on the farm because rodents can bring disease into your herd or home! let the kittys stay! theyre doing exactly what theyre suppose to do!
Support bodega cat!
Cats are invisible and blend in while boosting sales simply by attracting more customers. Petting cats is a great distraction that can jog a customer's mind in what else they should buy. Most of all the world is enriched by cats!! 😺🇺🇲🌍💞
So the city health team would rather have rats? Yeah, rats are less unsanitary. This country is so backwards. City needs to get it together and update those codes
So tge inspectors fine thd Bodega owners $600 when they walk through the door?
I'm gonna get a Male bodega cat and a female bodega cat do my litter will be the ultimate bodega cat
Cybercat 2077
The Store owner is Gold, what a nice man. All this nonsense just to get to the business man's money. A stupid law, to have rats and mice in stores, is that better?
Require they be neutered. That will help control stray cat population. Then make neutering low cost.
They could get hypoallergenic cats
Cats attract customers. Rats do not.
They already argued about it your late like 2 years ago lol they are good to go
No, I googled: are bodega cats illegal in nyc . They're still illegal. Multiple hits.
