    I never heard or even thought of "that" purpose for music in these videos! Very smart move. Generally, I dislike a lot of distracting background "noise" that interferes with my diminished hearing, but as long as it's not too loud, and captions are available, I'm fine with it. Also, cutting boards. I have plastic ones, most common are wooden ones, my parents have a glass one. The blade WILL rub on that when you cut in a frequent matter. Does this play into losing sharpness?

    • @CrimeVid
      @CrimeVid 25 дней назад +2

      @@MarioStoilov93 Never use a hard cutting board, it'll turn the edge over as fast as you can say knife.

    • @MemeScreen
      @MemeScreen 25 дней назад

      @@CrimeVid I would say the cutting board material depends on the hardness of your knives. Japanese knives are usually harder and do fine on some harder wooden cutting boards. Western knives tend to be softer and need a softer wood. It about the balance of buying a board that won't damage your knives but also making sure the board is hard enough to take minimal damage from the knife.

    • @CrimeVid
      @CrimeVid 25 дней назад

      @@MemeScreen A silly thing to say, Hard is hard, the glass cutting board mentioned, will be way harder than the edge of a kitchen knife, wood is not, although wood with a lot of silicates might not be a good idea. I have not heard of anybody using ironwood to make cutting boards.

    Every single time anything is reviewed positively by a beloved outlet, one of two things happens: the price increases, or the quality goes down within 1 year. I have seen it again and again with channels like America's Test Kitchen and Project Farm. So many products either increase in price, or if you look a year or two after, you will find newer reviews saying that the product they're selling now is different (cheaper) than what was previously sold in some way.

    • @OUTDOORS55
      @OUTDOORS55  26 дней назад +5

      Great point. I agree. Its ever evolving👍

    • @AySz88
      @AySz88 26 дней назад +1

      I think it was this channel (?) that had something like "If the price rises, it's worth it until $x, when this other one gets more competitive" and I really appreciate that.
      But yeah, unfortunately simply any rise in demand makes it very natural for the manufacturer to do one of two things, each corresponding to what you mentioned. Either they just push up the price per unit because the new demand puts max profit at a higher price, or they can try to increase production volume. And you'll always get growing pains with the latter (new people, new methods, etc), causing quality to decline.

    • @godminnette2
      @godminnette2 25 дней назад +1

      @@AySz88 I think that it goes beyond simple increasing of production volume. Some of these downgrades are dramatic. I think they see an opportunity to achieve larger margins on a product that is moving well and act quickly to swap out the product. For example, there's a tape measure Project Farm really liked, the Craftsman PROREACH, that about a year after the video was replaced at the same listing with one made in a different country (Thailand instead of USA, despite the product page and the casing of the tape measure still proudly proclaiming it was made in the USA) and with an entirely different (and far worse) tape than the original one. Their Amazon page is still like this now; it says made in the USA and has pictures with the old tape, but you can find reviews showing that it's made in Thailand and with the inferior tape.
      Part of me thinks that some of these must be coincidences; that plans to change production had already been made regardless of the units being sold. Certainly if changes happen only within weeks or a few months this would have to be the case. But it happens so often that I can't help but think it's intentional at least some of the time.

    • @dekjet
      @dekjet 25 дней назад

      It's a normal process. When a review creates extra demand the price naturally goes up (for a while). Some companies then try and add production capacity in a hurry. Maybe they hire a new factory, use bigger/different machines or start sourcing material form a different supplier. All great in theory when it's done well and thoroughly. Unfortunately, it's not always the case and that is when quality goes to shit.

    • @godminnette2
      @godminnette2 25 дней назад

      @@dekjet Yeah, but it makes things a constant back and forth game between companies, reviewers, and consumers. No good product at a good price can ever exist; when one is found, it doesn't just go back to equilibrium on the price/quality scale, it usually becomes far more expensive than it is actually worth, or the review is immediately outdated and misleading because the product quality goes to shit to increase margins. I am really sick and tired of it.

    I saw a clip of an interview recently given by Tom Hanks about the dire straits that Hollywood has found itself in after COVID, the strikes, etc. He called out RUclips as giving the film industry a run for its money. Part of that is the cost structure, but what I think is more important is the relationship that develops between so many creators and their subs. I'm so happy to hear how much encouragement you have received, and how it has positively impacted your health. Also love your transparency. Absolutely I completely agree! The COMMUNITY is what's missing from the mainstream. Thats the most important part. Also remember mainstream was forced entertainment for so long. RUclips is chosen. So the audience is much more valuable in my opinion. Again thats the community aspect that makes it so powerful. Thanks for the comment my friend 👍

    This is really the only channel that I trust when it comes to recommendations. There are a bunch of channels who get knives shipped to them from the manufacturer/importer and they do unboxings. I don't watch those channels. They're generally tedious as hell anyway. It's like watching QVC for knife nerds.
    I'm curious as to where the haters hang out. I've never seen anything but praise for your channel.

Just FYI, I ordered (through your link) the 2-sided Sharpal stone you recommended. It arrived yesterday, and I am impressed already. This thing is a beast! Thanks for the honest review!

    Amazon prices fluctuate all the time, and I can imagine a company who sees their product recommended on a popular RUclips channel would try to get out ahead of the increased demand.
    I had the opposite experience, though. I went to buy a sharpening stone you recommended last year and saw that the price had actually dropped a bit. Pleasant surprise!

    Health issues suck! In 2017 I was diagnosed with MS. It took 9 doctors to get that diagnosis, though. Most of them were VA doctors, though. My balance went to hell, my coordination went too, I couldn't walk and talk at the same time, my legs went mostly numb, and I would sleep for 10 hours, wake up, and an hour later feel like I hadn't slept in days! It was really awful not knowing what was going on! I feel for you, and hope you get there!

    I wanted to buy sharpening stones for about a decade and couldn't decide how to start. Your videos finished the decade long stuck state. I got the two-sided Sharpal diamond stone and a strop with diamond compound. Sharpening starts tonight. :) Thank you. I'm grateful for you doing the thinking for me and recommending a simple system instead of water stones.
    I checked the Sharpal diamond stone under my workplace Zeiss microscope. Wow, the uniformity is unbelievable.

    I bought the sharpal stone based on your recommendation and i have to say its a very nice product. I have water stones and the worksharp travel sharpener. I definitely feel like ill never have to buy another stone again unless i lose one. The worksharp is amazing value for the $ but its small and can be somewhat dangerous to sharpen larger knives. The sharpal makes it stupidly easy to sharpen large knives. I will finish them off after the sharpal on the worksharp and i get a very sharp and honed knive that will shave slice and chop just about anything i need.

      The 156N double sided diamond stone? I ordered one a week ago and it got delayed. Can't hardly wait. They were on sale for $45 vs 67. Had to get that. And with the leftover cash I got a Sharpal strop and a 5-micron diamond goo syringe. My knife block is giving me nervous looks.
      I also got a magnetic spirit level thingy that has terrible accuracy but is super easy to set accurately with the Sharpal angle pyramid widget that came with the strop, so together they should make keeping an angle a lot easier.

    You are the only one which i personally really like. Keep it up man!
    Because of searching for a diagnosis from your illness. I have been trying to get a diagnosis for over 10 years now. With genetic testing and so on. It looks like mine is so rare that it's really difficult to find. So telling the world what it is, if ever found, is really important i think. Maybe it will help someone. If it helps only one, it's a big thing!!

      It's the automation that's cool. The music copyright protection business is so big you can just piggyback on the web-spidering and recognition systems that were created to chase down violators for billion-dollar artists. I feel like that should be almost trivial to repurpose for any recorded content including podcasts and videos without music. But RUclips ain't that smart.
