    I went with Scaler. I grew up playing brass (classical and jazz). My ears know what works, but my fingers have no idea how to create those sounds on a keyboard. I appreciate the way Scaler ramps the process of discovery.

    I feel like the whole of the production community on youtube should thank you for these videos... I know the pride of a lot of content creators won't allow them to thank you for these gems so I'm thanking you on behalf of everyone that didn't know this before. Thank you, man!

    I want to say thank you for making this (even though I'm watching it over two and a half years after the fact). I was curious on the differences between Captain and Scalar, and this video definitely helped me determine that Scalar is perfect for how I do things. Will grab the demo tonight after I'm done with work, but if this pans out like the Kilohearts demo did, I'll probably be pulling the trigger tonight as well.
    Again, thanks!

      huge subscriber to the synchronicity theory existing.. going to spend rest of day till kickoff of SB digging into your channel. i use logic, but am able to watch and learn from you as you teach it in a way that makes DAW irrelevant. most tutorials don't do that, and i don't watch any that aren't in Logic. • @chosenonebeats
    @chosenonebeats 6 лет назад +3

    Great job reviewing these, both of these companies owe you some💰For me Scaler seems to be the go to as it firmly address the help I need with in understanding music theory better & creating chord progressions. Captain Chords seems to be too restricted while Scaler can guide you with exotic modes if needed.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      DJ Chosen One captain considers "flow" that's all, its big on diatonic progressions...which are smoother. Scaler will let you go out of key, like you said, allows for more exotic happenings

  • @RoneySmithseedoflife
    @RoneySmithseedoflife 6 лет назад +1

    The cool workaround to test drive Captain Plugins (CP) is the iOS app Odesi by Mixed In Key and it is priced low enough for usage by anyone who may not have internet access at some unexpected point in time.
    It is impossible to not add the other possible plugin choice at some point in time! To anyone on the fence, add both as soon as it feels comfortable to you!
    Mixed In Key is offering the desktop version of Odesi with CP for only $20 more ($99 total).
    Odesi Chords on iOS and CP ARE NOT THE SAME THING but Odesi Chords on iOS does offer a bank of interchangeable chord progressions, basslines, and drums! It also does offer a midi export feature!
    I only bought Scaler first before CP because I saw it on Plugin Boutique first:)
    When I recognized that Mixed In Key actually developed CP and I was already a customer of theirs AND CP ACTUALLY OFFERS OUT OF SCALE ENHARMONIC CHORDS, it was a done deal on becoming a repeat customer!
    There is another iOS app that I have been using just for the acceleration of my music theory understanding and it breaks down the music theory to permanently understand what is going on at all times musically.
    The genius is Gregory Moody and his company is Creative Music Ventures.
    The iOS app is Piano Guitar Harmony MIDI Studio Pro! He has videos here on RUclips and hardcopy courses beyond the PDFs within the app.
    I have bought all the courses within the app even though I never bought the MIDI export or THE RUN MACHINE features.
    Moody teaches how to find multiple suitable chords for any given melody and bass note combination!
    The key to remember is that there are bridges between smartphones, DAWs, and plugins! Exclude none of them and combine as many as your budget will allow:)
    Keep it simple!
    Thanks MG for another great video and you are pushing my secret buttons to go as deep as I can into learning more about modes than I expected to!

  • @degagedela8554
    @degagedela8554 6 лет назад +14

    You have to be online to create chords ??? Captain chord is definitely the LOSER of this duel with this restriction and should rather be compared to the online chord generators. Thank you for this very helpful comparison.

    • @degagedela8554
      @degagedela8554 6 лет назад +3

      Yes I understand this security measure but they must also understand that they will lose a good half of mobile users who often create with a laptop away from the world :)
      I just noticed after using the Scaler demo that it does not propose any chord progression, but rather the available chords in the scale defined or detected in the order: 1,2,3,4,5,6 , 7, with variations for each chord. it is very similar to Cthulhu with a simpler interface, less arpeggio and no possibility of defining his own chords.
      I also regret the no possibility to lock the scale and key.
      it is still an excellent tool to harmonize quickly, it can be compared to the excellent Synelor Harmony Improvisator which is much more rich, more complex and much harder to master.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +2

      I got a new video coming - which will clear a lot of that up. Scaler "proposed" progressions are simply the Song & Artist Packs ...whereas captain lends to "I-IV-V" style. When you load a artist song...you will see those variables on the chords themselves...horizontally in order. So its all good. Also, sites like Hooktheory and Chordify will provide endless amounts of progressions via Key & Degree....you can just make them and save them in Scaler as you go.
      For me, Im just using both to my best abilities..which will be realized in my new upload.

    • @degagedela8554
      @degagedela8554 6 лет назад +1

      Yes it's true that we can already do pretty well with the chord progression proposed in "Artist" and "Song".
      it's been two days that I have fun with and I find it very intuitive, ostensibly, it offers nothing new compared to others, however it is so well organized and easy to use that it inspires more than others. This is currently one of my favorite chordbuilder.
      Apart from the online sites you mentioned, the only effective softs / vst that I know at the moment and that offer chords progression according to your personal melody are Biab and in another way, EZkeys.
      There is also the top of the top : Cognitone, but that's another world and especially another budget :)
      I'm waiting for your video, thank you for sharing and good music!

    Good evening MG I been watching you for a while.. You have amazing tips and information about music theory and some..... I so cant wait to see the video on Scaler with Reason 10 using the functions to play any other VST sound in Scaler besides the default piano sound that comes with it Thanks

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      It will require an update. The Pluginboutique website lists all the apps that support "Midi Routing". Right now ableton is king in terms of support. Reason is listed...so thats a good sign that it may be worked on next. I think reason itself, needs VST 3.4 support -which will solve a lot of 3rd party VST issues. Or simply support AU instead on MAC. Either OR...we wait. But don't sleep on drag and drop.

    The comparison at 12:50 is (unintentionally) misleading. Scaler is playing a bass note on piano. If you get Captain Deep to play a bass note on piano alongside Captain Chords and set complexity and inversions properly you can get the same vibe with minimal differences. If required you can also add *another* instance of Captain Deep (e.g. to play bass guitar).

    • @MGTheFuture

    Scaler has more chord substitution choices. Also didn't see the clever detection ability in Captain Chords. That can be huge for the theory challenged if you bang out a couple chords and a couple melody notes and want some help on possible directions to go, the scale/mode selector from detected content makes it truly unique.
    I'd stick that arepeggiation you added at 26:00 instead on a copy of the chords with a Bass VST!

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      Yeah the Detector is a BIG Deal. I have a few "exotic" ideas for it - since it wants to be all helpful and all.

  • @mrconcept

    I would spend a lot more time with Scaler if they made the progression builder at the bottom syncable to the daw and add some rhythm / Swing options. An Arpeggiator would be nice as well.

    Awesome tutorial MG! I've always had a problem when I drag and drop midi progressions from EZY Keys into FL Studio, in that I can only drag once - it replaces but does not add to the progression. For eg, if I have already dragged/dropped 4 bars of verses into my piano roll, I cannot add another four bars later if I worked on a new part. I could do that in Garageband but not in fl studio 20. I am wondering whether this limitation also applies to Captain Chords or Scaler. The reason I ask is because so far, your tutorials only involve four chords and 4 bars so you only need to drag/drop once. Is that a limitation for you as well? I work in spurts. I may add want to a bridge later but the drag/drop function replaces my original stuff inside piano roll of fl studio, instead of adding new bars. Hope I'm making sense. Any help is deeply appreciated.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      In FL studio, I’m not sure if there is a limit, but if there is I would create another pattern to continue and then play it via song mode.
      I use short progressions for the kind of music I make. At max I’ll use 3 patterns, if I’m doing bridges and turn arounds.

    • @GODLIMIT

      Think of it this way, your skill set allows you to work faster and more intuitively. This still requires trial and error to make something "good". Let alone a myriad of hacks (as seen on my IG) to get to a level where you can sample it. It's not a magic key...or if it is...people still gotta find the door. This allows people who could never figure it out...start to figure it out. And in time...people will take the training wheels off. In the meantime...the music starts to get better. This leads to better songs. This leads to a healthier market place ...all wins. Perspective 🙏

    Nice and informative review bro. Thanx!!
    for me I like captains chord's interface more. but scaler ir more usefull. Just waiting for a vst that mimic Cubase's chord track here.

    • @eztutor823
      @eztutor823 6 лет назад +1

      yeah íve seen it.
      I've seen most of them actually. EZkeys is also a good one.
      but still Cubase's Chord track is superior to them all (in my opinion)

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      Perhaps....what I'm using with scaler and captain does everything I need. Hit one key and Gerate all bass, melodies, and counter melodies with no issue ...for less than 99$ ...or....cubase

    • @werzeldamage4014

      It's a different approach...more for physically playing than the theory end of things, so perfect for someone who wants to try things without having to learn chords. I dunno, hard to describe. It maps out chords to your keyboard so that you can play a chord with one finger. One of those things where you'd have to try it to know. I watched a few vids on it and while demo-ing it things just felt more experimentally open than I thought it would be while watching. ( As a plus - the guy who created it answers questions in the forum himself. I always like that. )

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      Captain Play does something similar with the qwerty. Fixes voicing as you play it. Very cool feature. I'll watch something about the Xfer one.

    Thanks for this video. I now produce 2 years of EDM (Deephouse / techhouse). Now I am looking for a plugin that can help me with making melodies / chords. I work with FL studio and came across the plugin Scaler and plugin Cthulhu (Xfer), are they not nearly the same? And I read on the website that Captain Chords does not go well with Fl studio?

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  5 лет назад

      Yeah I've had smoother results with ableton or studio one

    • @MGTheFuture

      Will Sacks unfortunately. That's what makes fl great all these years. The other daws are catching on slowly. Ableton 10 seems to address it

  • @brianmi40
    @brianmi40 6 лет назад +1

    Help us get Reason to use MIDI EFFECTS so that we can run Scaler *inside* Reason! There's just no reason to Reason not supporting MIDI effects. So besides Scaler, we can't use:
    - Microtonic (yes it has sounds, but will just output the midi patterns)
    - Xronomorph (free)
    - Kirnu Cream
    - Cthulhu
    and on and on and on!
    Reason needs to get out of the 90s and become a full featured sequencer.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      I'm sure with the amount of new attention and progress Propellerhead made with 10, that they are motivated to continue to move. Im certain "finance" is a big reason for a lot of delays. Remember a lot of this stuff is pirated - which leads to companies making "lefT" decisions. From Captain to Propellerhead. This year seems to be the first year I see the "general" conversation be about support and buying what we use. As such...time and money...we will see things improve. Until then - Drag and Drop & Utilities won't slow us down until.

    I bought Odesi by Mixed in Key maybe 8 ago
    months you can use the presets or make your own
    chords,melodies,basslines and drums all in odesi seems like mixed keys just took those 3 features thats in obesi and made 3 new seperat vst's .I would just by odesi it works on Pc & Mac ..

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      A couple of things, captain is indeed a modular version of odesi. Which is great because it allows you to keep your native DAW workflow. Also, it's coming to PC, that was their priority one as of this video. Also, for the price...it could of just been one module and been crazy. But this 4 modules (captain play just dropped) will soon be 8 or more. So...it's a good investment either way.

      MG The Future No problem man. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of music production.
      I have a challenge for you. Can you do a tutorial on how we can use Cthulhu in Maschine or Reason with Scaler or Captain plugins?

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      Maschine? That's a good one to use it In, but I don't use any NI products. As far as Reason - check out my "players" video on my Reason playlist. It's the best way, imo, to do music theory tasks in Reason. I think reasons modular approach is better than some of the plugins. For instance, captain requires me to edit with piano roll...which is perfect in FL. Reason kinda makes you play along...which is dope if you got a nice midi controller.

    Cant you load the midi or chord structure from scaler into captain chords and let it talk to melody...WHO TF WANTS A SYNTH MAKING THEIR HIPHOP BASSLINES???

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      Just Music And lyrics in a strict sense, the captain Plugins only talk to each other. But you can use both to achieve the same thing...by telling them to play the same thing.

    Little heads up: the Windows version came out, but only C-Chords and C-Player. They will probably add the rest later. Anyhow, the Internet-Access thing is something i won't support so i am not getting it. I have Scaler, instaChords and EzKeys. Scaler is super usable and EzKeys seems to beat Captian on all levels as it has more scales. The one and only gripe about EzKeys is the tiny UI if you run 1440p and up. Thanks for the video!

      MG The Future they are still taking suggestion for new features over in their forums. There might even be a new plugin called captain arp lol
      Soon we will be able to scales our midi keyboard to the scale of our chords and come up with our own rhythm. We can do it now but only using the computer keyboard.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      That's Next Level For Real. I'm interested in Captain Hook? I wonder what that means...is it different than melody? etc - Captain ARP would be ridiculous. They might end up short stopping the middle man (FL Piano Roll) for a lot of programs. In fact - yeah, add ARP and Captain STRUM...and its done. You can just use any DAW that has Ghost channels at that point. Gonna be crazy.
