I love the varieties you got! Im growing all my dwarf sized dahlias from seed this year because I can’t be bothered with fussy tubers anymore + they can get expensive😅. The seeds germinated so quickly and I can’t wait to plant them in my garden containers sometime in May.
Yes you totally should😇! I’m growing a series called “Fresco”, and it’s a mix of different colours. There is another series called “Figaro” which are also short and compact. They usually don’t require staking because they only reach 10-12” in height.
Skyfall Flowers is located in Grayslake, Illinois. I have ordered dahlia tubers from them before when they were in Maine and order each year. Tania wakes up the tubers and when I get them in early April, in Wisconsin, I pot them up inside. They are not a clump but a strong individual tuber and I have had great success. Skyfall Flowers also sell beautiful bouquets all summer in Chicago suburbs. Good luck with your dahlias!
I got excited when I read your comment. I grew up in Gurnee Illinois...went to St. Andrews church in Graylake and moved to Wisconsin later in life. I will check out Skyfall.
I'm going to try growing them this year...very excited. You mentioned that you want to place taller flowers in the back of your deck. Remember that you can always raise the flowers higher by placing them on small long tables or even upside down pots.
Dahlias have become one of my favorites and they do multiple each year. My go to is Longfield Gardens, Swan Lake Dahlia’s and then a local flower farmer down the road. I pretty much follow the same process pre-sprout in April and then overwinter. My all time favorites are Maarn, Crème de Cassie and of course Cafe au lait dinner plate.
Just watched your previous video, planting in the pots…have you considered starting the tubers in smaller pots to sprout them? Might be a bit easier and less space than in the final containers. That one penhill was huge, would probably have to divide something like that to fit in a starter pot.
Oh dear…now I must go find dahlia tubers. It’s a first for me and will plant in containers here in zone 8. Will a 10 gallon grow bag suffice for a tuber? Can’t wait to try!
I have started my Dahlias in the pot, and will transplant into garden after our last frost. I hate Otto’s Thrill, Melina Fluer, Penhill, cafe au lait, Mikayla Miranda, crème de cassis, wizard of oz and a three more I can’t remember the names. I’m excited they are all sprouting I think it is going to look amazing! My tulips came up beautifully, hopefully that a sign that the dahlias will follow suit!! 😂I’m excited to see your garden waking up!
You were probably right about mosaic virus on your previous dahlias. Always discard if diseased. Most of the dahlias come from Netherlands with surprisingly high levels of mosaic virus and leafy/crown gall. I had lots of issues last year. Definitely clean tools throughly when cutting flowers/tubers between varieties and keep dahlia tubers/soil separate to stop gall spreading. Then you don’t have to worry about spreading anything. You might already know, but I didn’t last year so might be helpful.
Does the package say dinner plate dahlia? When over winter in garage, is your garage heated? What is the beautiful plant on your wall, it is gorgepus. Thank you
The first time I ordered Dahlias, I bought 11 and 6 were not what I ordered, that was Swan Island. What's worse is, you don't even know it for months. I didn't lift mine last winter, we've had so much rain, I won't be surprised if they don't come back.
It's my first year so I bought some 5-6$ tubers so I won't be heart broken if I mess up the over wintering. That's 35 tubers to plant into grow bags. I might be insane lol
In my experience, that brand carried at Gethsemane is the most reliable in terms of the labelled variety matching the tubers in the bag. Costco and Lowes are almost as good. Home Depot and Walmart are the least reliable. And even when labelled correctly, dahlia blooms are just too profoundly beautiful to have their images perfectly replicated on the packaging. Online image searches on varieties available for purchase can be helpful but not 100%. I've considered, but have yet to try, starting the tubers in-ground with the wall-of-water type of insulated growth protectors.
@leonardsfriend5821 oh, that's good to know! Thank you! I bought dahlia tubers for the first time ever, from Costco. Since then I've read that buying from places like Costco is a no-no, etc. All the bulbs I've bought from Costco over the years have given excellent results and I refuse to be a garden snob, plus Costco reimburses. I'm not too worried, especially after watching these videos 😊 My problem is that I bought 2 packages and that's 14 tubers! I'm bonkers 😂
Can't wait to watch your video when you're planting your Dahlias.
It’s going to happen soon!!

Which dwarf varieties are you growing? I might need to add some to my garden!

Yay! more Dahlia this year!

Thank you!! I’m adding them to my places to visit.
I am in Chicagoland also. Last year I hung one grow light in my unheated garage to save space under my indoor grow lights. Worked for my dahlias!
That’s such a good idea!! I need to see if I can do that.
Can't go wrong with Swan Island Dahlias.

I definitely should do that! I’m going to be impatient waiting for them to get as tall as I want them on their own 😆
The dahlia and zinnia border will look very nice 🌸🌸🌸👍
I can’t wait to see how it turns out!!

Swan Lake has been recommended a few times so I definitely need to check them out!

That’s such a good idea and would make things a lot easier!
These are all so pretty! I’m trying dahlias for the first time this year so I just got one
You’ll have to let me know how they do for you!
Excellent

10 gallon will work great!

That is good to know! I need to make sure I’m better about cleaning my tools between pruning this year.

It does! Except for the one that’s a decorative variety. Our garage is heated, so it kicks on to keep it at 40 degrees.

Yes! I was surprised when what was supposed to be a light purple dahlia turned out to be bright red 😆
My dahlia tubers just arrived! I've Omega, Ferncliff Illusion, and Breakout.
That’s so exciting!! Which varieties are you growing?

Omg I’m so excited to know how this goes for you!!
Haven't tried them yet. But interested. Did buy some but returned them. Limited space.
Totally understand. I already have more plants than I can’t fit so I’m going to have to make some cuts 😆
😊nice video
Thank you!

I never even thought about Costco having dahlia tubers! I’ll have to check that out next time.
@@ChicagoGardenerCostco bulbs and bare root perennials are supplied through Longfield, usually pretty good quality. But, they sell out quickly!

Yeah I had zero luck….broken necks, dehydrated tubers….disappointing for sure. American in alberta(
Oh no!! We those ones you purchased or overwintered?
