Its Spooky Season so lets get into some grim dark horror! In this video were going to dive into one of the best warhammer horror tails ever released! The watcher in the rain!
I don't think it's possible to put into words just how truly horrific and terrifying the universe of Warhammer 40K truly is. It is a realm, full of sadistic monsters, heretical cults, and dark Eldritch gods. It is a galaxy where the human race fights a millions of battles across the stars every single day, not in the hopes of making any form of advancement towards our glorious destiny, as that was the hopeful dream of a young species that was crushed long ago. Instead we fight on, only to cling on to existence for but a few more centuries.
The void of space, The dark places between stars. These are the hunting grounds of the aliens and mutants and heretics those who lurk in every shadow, and desire only to consume the flesh of the Emperor's faithful. The universe is brutal, un forgiving and uncaring. And it is rife with material to write some truly spectacular spooky stories.
unfortunately most of the time these tails are told from the perspective of 8 ft tall demigods clad and ceramite power armor. So it's a little difficult to put ourselves in their shoes. And really feel fear for our main characters.
The watcher in the rain was one of the early entries into the Warhammer horror line. A project that was introduced by the black library a few years ago. That sought to shed some figurative light on the darkest corners of this universe, the smaller more macrob stories that often get overshadowed by The Never Ending War that plagues the galaxy.
The story sees an unlikely pair being forced to rely on one another for survival as they attempt to escape a drowning world. All the while, someone or something is stalking them in the darkness, something so evil and terrible that to look upon. It is to risk losing yourself to the darkness forever.
It's an excellent story, one I think doesn't get nearly as much credit as it deserves. One with an absolutely perfect ending. So gather on my friends and blitz dive in to the chilling tail of The watcher in the rain.

Think about it you are a guard about to get murdered by a chaos marine, this guy will tell the marine to turn around and eat him, then gets up waves good bye and feeds off more marines. You meanwhile will be left alone since your innocent and not a good snack, a rare good warp entity.

I mean, the Watcher pretty much mindrapes anyone that acknowledged it into madness. While it's true the Interrogator did awful shit, the thing that caused him to go insane was the Watcher, and nothing else, since he was already brainwashed and trained not to feel anything about it. It would be like saying the One Ring didn't do anything, the people that carried it simply wanted it for themselves from the get go.
So, the Watcher took an active role. It just didn't rip people apart with its claws or anything, abd just fuck with their heads, which is pretty much spot on how most Daemon corruption works. Unless its Nurgle, then you just get physically ill.

It is not uncommon in real life for people who have done terrible things to reflect on them at a later point in their lives and feel bad about it. Some people can live in delusion, can refuse to look at the evil of their own actions, as with the scribe. But the larger point was that even if you refuse to acknowledge your own evil, it can still catch up to you in the end. When we externalize evil, when we cannot acknowledge it as originating within ourselves, that is when we are truly lost.

@@alcid4268 Kind of? The idea was to starve the chaos gods. They are only 'gods' because they are in fact so powerful. Lets take Khorne for example. God of strife and conflict. Every form of strife and conflict feeds him. A drunken brawl that starts because of a football game? He gets a drop of power. You butcher 1000 people praising his name, he gets a bucket of power.
Big E knows you cant outright destroy the chaos gods, but he can make them wither on the vine to the point they are ineffectual. Imagine if khorne couldn't manifest in any way in the galaxy; he can't summon bloodletters, can't whisper in people ear encouraging them to fight, can't affect anything even on a small scale. He's too weak and too atrophied to affect the world in any way. Sure, the god 'exists' but so what? He's effectively harmless.
That was the emperors plan. Weaken them to the point they are powerless to interfere. And how do you stop them from giving power to the chaos gods, either directly or even unconciously? They can't do it if they don't know they exist. If they know the gods exist then on some level they know "Huh, that monster I just butcher just made khorne a bit stronger." And that means khorne got more than just the bare minimum sliver of power from it. His plan was just to reduce their gains in power to the absolute bare minimum by denying even the knowledge they existed in the first place, thus in turn making them so weak they can't make their existence known and appear with a sign over their head saying "Hi, we exist, notice me!"

There are 2 unnamed and almost entirely unknown warp entities that the Imperium simply knows about because people from warring factions believe in them. That’s about it.
One is the Warp manifestation of the Tau Empire’s philosophy of the Greater Good given form. However, since the original Tau Xenos responsible for creating the Greater Good philosophy has virtually no understanding of the Warp, this Warp Entity was brought into existence by the conquered and absorbed Xenos, including some humans, that do understand the warp.

It wasn't at all surprising that she was, in fact, doing it on purpose.
Also, the narrative demanded a darker twist in that exact moment. Whether it be her gloating confession or her being attacked by the watcher, something needed to pump the tension. If you have a moment of respite at the end of a horror story, often it's only there to make the next bad event bite more deeply.

But things like the Watcher are PERFECT examples of things from the warp that are truely eldritch. We understand so little of what it is, what it wants, and that's honestly what the warp and the entities within it should be.
Its weird how rarely we see the "Horror" aspect of the warp or indeed ANY part 40k that could be horror stories in their own right. I'd love to see some stories from the human perspective about the Red Terror. What a poetic twist of fate. The interrogator admits his mistakes and accepts what he is, only to be betrayed in that moment, while the administrator who has already accepted what she is, has unmade her fate through her own actions.

I always liked the idea of Event Horizion actually being an unofficial spinoff of the Hellraiser franchise. It almost fits even better than 40k would, especially if you consider Dr.Weir to be a sort of Cenobyte (a sadistic, vaguely demonic entity from a hell-like dimension of the hellraiser franchise.)

Wow, I just had this come up randomly in a watchlist, but I was not expecting such a riveting story. Even outside of the 40k-verse, this was one of the best short pieces of horror fiction I've read/heard in some time. But the 40k aspects just made it sooooo much more horrifying. Thanks algorithm, for this one.
Loved how the actual horror elements were all non-supernatural. No chaos forces, etc. Just primal, human evil, and mostly the results of the broken Imperium and it's hypocritical nature. All of The Watcher stuff could easily be explained as guilt-driven, and well I guess having a warp surge nearby, probably also means the watcher was a physical manifestation they could actually see. I'll have to look up other work by this author.
