  • On Monday, 10 July 2023, at 16:40, a new eruption started in Iceland.
    The initial eruption started as a 900-meter (2,953-foot) long crack by Litli-Hrútur mountain (Fagradalsfjall area) on Reykjanes peninsula, which is about 19 miles (30km) from Iceland's capital, Reykjavik.
    Visitors can safely park about 8-10 km away from the eruption viewing point and hike the rest of the way on a dirt road.
    Search and rescue teams are constantly monitoring the situation and visitors.
    In this video, I'll show you and tell you all there is to know about visiting the active volcano in Iceland and how to reach the 2023 volcano eruption site.
    I have a very detailed blog about how to get to the eruption site on my blog: juliasomething.com/iceland-vo...
    After filming this video, I visited the volcano eruption site once more. You can find all the details in the blog!

    Thanks for showing what it really is like to make the hike and see the volcano. Our visit to Iceland starts next Tuesday, and I had a hard time convincing the family that it's not a dangerous disaster zone if you don't do anything stupid. You video has convinced them, so thanks!

      Glad that this was helpful. Make sure to check the latest news from authorities on the day of the hike, they are constantly monitoring the situation and close the trail when the visibility isn’t good or it’s too windy (the wind can push the smoke on the direction of the trail).
      I wanted to go now again, but it’s close. I’ll wait until morning when they will reassess the situation. Please do the same when visiting!

    Great video with lots of info how to get from the parking to the volcano. Wow, a long hike of 20 km's over gravel.. You will feel your feet.

      @juliasomething  11 месяцев назад

      Yes indeed, my feet hurt after this. The good thing is that after the first km or so, it was more of a dirt road. But now please take Trail A which starts from P1. It’s close to this one, quite similar, but it takes you close to the volcano, which is now less active than when I was there

    A fun watch. Amazing how long the lava stays hot. Regarding your Rode Wireless Go II, they sell a stick ("interview-go") that you can insert the transmitter into making it into a handheld mic (includes a windscreen). This might be more convenience than holding the transmitter body. Great audio quality, especially for such windy conditions. We were in Iceland a month ago (beautiful country), so we missed the excitement of the new eruption. Enjoy!

      Thank you. I was holding the mic to make sure it captures the sound (I tried a bunch of solutions and this works well in windy situations). We didn’t expect to see the eruption and it was truly amazing. We did another hike 3 days after this one and will edit the video soon. It will be even better 😍

      @@juliasomething Yes I get why you were holding the transmitter. I mention the stick ("interview-go") as it might be more convenience. Looking forward to your new content.

    really useful video. We'll be there this wednesday (26th July). Hope we get to see the erupting lava. But just to clarify, did you take the path E hiking trail?

    • @juliasomething
      @juliasomething  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, this is the E trail, but you might want to consider trail A too, which starts from P1. It’s longer but depending on the wind direction, might be worth it.

      @@juliasomething Isn't trail A closed?

    • @juliasomething
      @juliasomething  11 месяцев назад

      @@nielsdijkstra2703 no. Lately, more and more people follow trail A bc it offers a much better view of the volcano. But it’s longer, more challenging and if the wind blows South, you’ll get to inhale it, so a smoke mask is required

    Amazing!!! Would you recommend going over there next week? Also, when would be the best time to visit a volcano once it erupts?

    • @juliasomething
      @juliasomething  11 месяцев назад

      Go when you can, but hurry. The volcano seems to be erupting less these days. Take trail A from P1, not this one shown in the video, and start your hike before 6pm (when they close the trail, according to latest news). The best views of the volcano are usually in the evening

      Can I stay in Reykjavik (more lodging options) and go to the volcano site from there? If you know of any affordable lodging option I would really appreciate it!! Awesome video!

      @@Bruno2352 yes. It’s only 1h drive from Reykjavik

    So maybe odd question but, do they have bathroom facilities at the trailhead? Also along the trail? It’s such a long hike along such a exposed trail.

    • @juliasomething
      @juliasomething  11 месяцев назад

      No, there was a portable WC at P2, but other than that there aren't any facilities, so plan accordingly. Trail A is now recommended, which starts from P1, very similar to this one, but on the other side of the mountain and lava field. It's longer, but gets you a better view, given that now there's limited volcano activity (lava isn't flowing and dancing around like you see in this video.) Here's a guide I wrote about hiking to see the 2023 volcano juliasomething.com/iceland-volcano-eruption-2023/
