That volcano looks surreal. This Iceland series rocks.
Thank you! In our next video we will be renting a camper van for 2 weeks on the ring road. Stay tuned
Do you have to pay anything?
@@TheAwkwardTourists do you have to pcr test coming back to america?
Thank you so much for posting not only your flight and entry experiences but the volcano!!! I have been wondering about booking a trip to Iceland but worried about the process! I will be watching every video to see your adventures. Thanks for your detailed chronicle of this trip. I am truly jealous and excited to see more.
Thanks so much. We will be putting out one video a week while traveling, and then hopefully two per week once we are back home
Agreed, finding this super useful!
More changes coming after June 15 regarding travel restrictions and rules. It’s fairly simple now, and will get even easier within the next few weeks. Go to COVID.is for the latest info.
Great content. The volcano was amazing. Incredible.
Beautiful imagery, the lava flow in the dimmer light was amazing but the "splashing" impacts from it hitting the ground after being blown in the air was so cool! Would love to see that in person and watch the landscape get recreated right before my eyes!
It's changing fast too. Volcanos are crazy
Heck yeah!
The views of that volcano was amazing
What a spectacle. Very lucky to see it with your own eyes and we are lucky to see it through your eyes. The river of lava in the dark reminded me of the red tail lights in LA traffic😄
Haha, Kind of like being stuck on the 405!
I think I went up there a week after you guys. When I reached the top where you could first see it, lava had flowed maybe 100ft from the trail and it was like a week or so after I had been there that the hill you could sit on and watch it got cut off by lava. It’ll be years and years before it’s safe to go back on that hill! Crazy!!!!
Yeah! so nuts how the landscape changes so quickly. And now, with the latest eruption the area is really changing. I wonder how it looks now......
Great video! I just read that the last 500 meters of trail A is now closed because of the encroaching lava. Hopefully a new path will be forged soon as it appears that’s where you had your best views!
Yeah we saw that, crazy! I think it might cross the road soon
This is awesome! I leave for Iceland tomorrow!
Nice! Be sure to check out our other video about flying to Iceland
Going in October, hopefully not too crowded. It's amazing, can't wait.
Yeah, fingers crossed! It already looks completely different now, so I wonder what it will look like in October!
@@TheAwkwardTourists colder for sure, hopefully less people. That's my guess.
This is about the most informative and captivating video about visiting the volcano in Iceland, What you shared is the bases of guidelines I’ll follow when I visit Iceland this July 😊 new subscriber, I pressed the liked button and have the notification bell on, looking forward towards your next episode 👍🏻😊
Thanks so much, We will be posting a lot more videos from this trip in the next few weeks
Super cool footage guys. We love how each volcano have a personality. This one is totally different than the active one we camped by, but equally as awesome. They're just amazing.
So true! Did you camp by one in Iceland?
I like that you captured your reaction to just standing there before it. I really failed to do that when I was there. It is hard to explain what a powerful experience it is to witness such a thing. I spent a lot of time just gawking and not filming at all.
Windy. Yep. Dressing well is everything if you want to be able to stay there once you get there.
We definitely spent a lot of time gawking too. We packed food, but forgot to eat it, because we were so mesmerized.
Thank you so much for posting your adventure in Iceland. Will follow you with all of your postings. wish you safe and fun time at Iceland.
Thanks for watching! We have a lot more Iceland Videos coming in the next few weeks!
6/2/21 looking back at the footage you took of the volcanos and you did a great job with capturing everything!
Thank you. It changes so quickly
Great timing for this! I'm heading to Iceland in a week to see the volcano also. Thanks for the info about arriving in Iceland. I didn't know about pre-registration or the C19 app.
Awesome! You'll have a great time. Be sure to check up to date conditions though, l think the lava flow broke through a new valley and might cross a road soon....
David, I'm so jealous, have a blast!
@@kathyrussell9490 I can hardly wait!!
Thank you for sharing this! My wife and I are going to Iceland in 2 weeks and I didn't know if there were trails and a parking lot at the volcano.
Have a great trip! Be sure to check Safetravels.is before your hike. They are really good about up to date conditions at the site
This was indeed so incredible, impressive and enchanting dear The Awkward Tourists! Volcanoes are always a source of excitement and thrill that is for sure! Well, these kind of eruptions are quite harmless, they can be visited without being seriously endangered, in contrast with the explosive ones which can flatten many square miles of area! Loved the idea of making grilled marshmellows at the frozen but still hot lava flow! Thanks for sharing this awesome and detailed experience with us! We joined your impressive channel! With warm greetings and kind wishes, Alex and Alexandra
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video good info on traveling to Iceland. I'll be heading there in September
Nice! Glad you found it useful. We have lots more videos coming out from this trip
Your video is awesome. The views are so cool. You know what is as good, is both of your expressions. I love your narratives and talks. I just love watching you two. So glad I found your videos. This is the last one I watched viewing your parts 1-5 first. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much! We try to film how we feel in the moment, kind of like a video journal. Great memories for us, and hopefully others can be inspired too
Love your videos. Heading to Iceland in August and *not so patiently* waiting for the next Iceland video.
Thanks for watching! We'll have our next one up tomorrow, we had some export trouble today unfortunately
Super helpful! And wow. We are going in 17 days and really hope it will still be spewing molten lava. Also the marshmallow idea is 💯
Nice! yeah hopefully it will still be going off. Things change really quickly up there
I just hiked to the volcano on Sunday. I might had teared up a little. So mesmerizing.
Right? Nature is so incredible and we feel really lucky to have seen that
I was there on Sunday, too! We really lucked out with the weather. Windy, but lots of sunshine and clear views. Can’t wait to go back later this year.
@@fuzzmuscle69 I'm ready to go back too! I was only there for 48 hours and still lots of things I want to see.
hey guys this is incredible!!! did look super windy hahaha!! that lava is just spectacular i beat you were even more gob smashed in person so many good shots!! hahaha you need a few hours up there once in a liftime viewing probably!! hearing the roar must be so strange but so cool!! loved watching this!
It was an intense experience all around. The wind, the sound, the cold, the gas, and when the wind blew the right way you could feel the heat from the volcano!
looks incredible .
It sure was. Looks a lot different now, over a year later, I want to go back and see how the lava fields have changed
Amazing timing! I hear they closed the trail the day after you went. What a privilege to see it so close. thanks for sharing your wonderful journey! Hope you've warmed up :)
Things are changing so quickly now. We filmed this about a month ago and the lava field is a lot bigger now!
We’ve watched this Volcano 🌋 (Volcanoes actually) since March 20 th & have seen probably, every RUclipsr’s videos. I can honestly say, your shots, your editing is even better than Icelanders’ who have the advantage of going to the eruption daily & filming it over & over. I remember this phase of eruption ; it was spectacular. This Volcano has altered its flow on a daily basis. You guys captured its essence. So COOL 🥶 …. And yet…So 🥵 . Excellent!
Thank you so much. I agree, It is crazy how fast things have been changing up there. It looks so much different now
So cool! My husband and I are going in August!
You'll have the best time!
We would LOVE to go there but unfortunately, during our time period in Iceland grindavik is closed due to eruption AND to make that worse, the road 1 from Vik to Skaftárhreppur is close due to glacier burst and then flooding the road AND the campsite Pakgil that we were going to be staying in is also closed due to the flood so NOW we have to start the ring road from the north and hopefully get to Vik when it’s August 1 😢😢😢😡
Ah that's crazy! It's definitely an ever-changing landscape
Those shots from the drone were totally insane. Nice catch.
Thanks! It was pretty sketchy flying conditions, but I had to try
Great timing that you got there before the best viewing point was closed off.
Really want to get to see it (geology degree) but travel from my EU home is still not permitted until next month.
Yeah, we saw that. The lava field wasn't anywhere near the path when we were there. Crazy how fast the landscape can change. I heard that they are worried about it coming down to the road too
@@TheAwkwardTourists Oh , no question that's it gonna hot the road.
They have already starting laying a new fibre optic cable deeper than the current one.
WOW, just incredible! Can’t wait to see the rest of your trip!!
Thanks for watching. Our next video will be out this weekend
Do enjoy fallowing you guys, reasons being you are tourists fallowing guidelines and regulations, respectful of our nature and enjoying yourself.
Thanks for the support!
Wow absolutely amazing!
Thanks for watching!
You must have been there about the same time I visited. I went up three times; 4/30, 5/1 and 5/4. On the last day, the volcano looked distinctly different..
I believe we went up on May 1. I'm glad we went when we did!
@@TheAwkwardTourists Well, we could have run into each other. On Saturday, May 1 it was very crowded and cold. I was freezing my tootsies off. My very awkward, newbie video is at: ruclips.net/video/x5UezV6ZVy0/видео.html. Cheers
You should definitely hit the volcano again before leaving Iceland. The landscape up there changes daily.
We definitely thought about it, but decided to leave it to the one experience
Dang, a marshmellow. I so want to see someone pop some popping corn on the lava.
Great job guys, I enjoyed your video and experience immensely..
That would be good! I didn't see popcorn, but I did see lots of Hot dogs and some people with baked potatoes
thank you for this video, i want to visit Iceland, this is really helpful, I love your videos guys
Thanks so much!
What a great video! Very envious! We'll be going next July. Hopefully it'll still be erupting and they'll be a good spot to view from.
This may be a little indelicate, but being there for long periods of time, no trees and all those people where do you use the restroom? I'm mostly concerned for my wife's tiny blatter.
It was tough. There was a port-a-potty at the start of the trail, and then a time when I was around the lava rock and no one else was so I had an opportunity. I didn't drink much water, which isn't the best but it helped
If you are near the airport, check out the bridge between the continents (it won't compare to the volcano but it was still cool when I went there (no volcano in 2016))
We missed it this trip! We will have to check it out next time. Looked awesome though
Wow, wow, wow
Insane experience
I'm going in July and I hope it's still erupting and there's still a decent viewing point!
Yeah, who knows what it will be like then, It changes so quickly. We will keep our fingers crossed for you!
Oh My God are you kidding me! That was amazing! Great Video! Thank you!! I am officially subscribed!
Thanks so much!
GJ guys. First vid I've come across of yours.
Thanks so much
Like your version of Steppenwolf!
Haha, I'm glad you caught that
They did make new better and shorter trails, Which Now have been destroyed by lava, And the road you guys drove to get there is expected to be overrun with lava in the next few days. The flow of lava doubled after you guys left. i think you guys might have missed the period were lava shoot up 3-400 meters high every few minutes like a geysir
We have been following the progression. It's crazy. I think it was 1 or 2 days after our visit when it stopped continuously erupting and started really putting out lava. Can't believe how fast it changes
Awesome😱👍
Thanks 🤗
You 2 are great ! You better hit Skógarfoss before you leave. My favorite. See ya on you-tube !
Thanks. We posted a video today from Skogafoss!
Thanks a bunch !
😮😍 Is this volcano still active!? Looking for an experience like this near Reykjavik (for July 2024)
Also, this is such a great recap of your Grindavik adventure!! 👏💯🌋 nicely done
Thank you so much for watching! This particular section of the volcano is no longer active, although parts of it are still erupting. I'm not sure how much of it is accessible to tourists at the moment, though.
I didn't realize you could get that close when it's active
This was pretty early in the eruption, As the lava field grew it became harder to get close to it safely.
Very nice!!
Thanks!
Hey guys, amazing video! Thank you for sharing! Which path did you guys take? Was it path A or path C?
I think it was path A, but everything has changed an the lava field is much closer to the road now
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thank you 😊 I read that they've made an alternative path A because of the lava
hi, what is the name of volcano? Thanks
@@trumantang3871 it's called Fagradalsfjall 😊 Are you heading there too?
Fantastic - so envious :) the volcano is beautiful
I am curious as to why you rented both a car AND a campervan? Why not just the campervan? I am planning a trip and wondering if there was an advantage to doing the combo. Also, was 2 weeks in the van about right? Just found your channel searching for Iceland info. Will subscribe. Thanks!
We arrived a couple of days earlier than our camper rental reservation was for, so we bridged the gap with a car
I have seen a couple RUclips vlogs that don't show as much of the volcano as you guys do. Can you reply about which trails to use, because the others do not get as close as you?
This was filmed 3 months ago, it's no longer possible to get as close as we did. The trails have been overtaken by the lava
Ha! You are brilliant to bring marshmallows. Awesome video and informative. What kind of cameras do you use? Great footage!
We shoot with a canon 6dmii, dji mavic pro drone (for this video) gopro hero9 black, and canon g7xmii
Hi, great video and thanks for your information. We are going to Iceland next month with a tour and planning to go to see the Volcano after the tour. Do you know is there any public transportation from reykjavik to the Volcano? We will be staying in Hilton in downtown. Thanks!
At the time that we went, I read something about a Bus, but it was more expensive than renting a car for a day, So we went the rental car route instead
@@TheAwkwardTourists what do you need to rent a car in Iceland? We're going in Oct and we were wondering if it's better to book a tour or rent a car to go see the Volcano
Great video
Thanks!
Wow I’m speechless I want to witness the volcano in person
It was insane. So much power and we were able to get suprisingly close
@@TheAwkwardTourists I’m flying out to Iceland 🇮🇸 next Saturday and I’m flying from California, I’ll be in Europe for 2 months I’m so excited
What an incredible experience!
We wont forget it any time soon!
Well done, and very helpful! We're hoping to hike to the volcano in early July and follow your itinerary around the Ring Road, so add me to your list of subscribers!
Awesome! We have about a half dozen videos coming up from our journey around the ring road. Stay tuned!
Great video! I am traveling from the US to Iceland in July. I'm a little nervous about the process of getting back into the United States. I read that you have to have a negative COVID test and that you have to print it out as proof. I'm not sure how that works. Do you think you could make a video explaining the process of returning home? Thank you!! :))
Getting back to US has been pretty easy, just a rapid test within three days, and it can be digital. We didn't have to print it. Always double check of course though
Like Lost Among Locals said, It is pretty easy, however haha we did have some issues with the results but I think that was just a one off situation. We did make a video about that process. It will be coming out in a few more weeks
Hihi I'm from Iceland. You will take a test at the airport when you arrive Iceland + vaccine. You have to take PCR before you go to US.
Everything just in your phone.
We are using all tecknic.
Thanks so much for this video! Planning on making the hike up soon - how long did the hike take you ultimately round trip? And how much time do you recommend spending up there?
I could tell you all this but the hike and terrain are completely different now as lava has closed off the trails that we took and the views are totally different! I have no idea what it's like up there now, although I expect different paths have been made. We were up there for 8 hours!
Amaiziiiiing, well done, great channel
Loving your Iceland travel series!! I just booked my tickets to Iceland and I've been literally taking notes of places and Covid processes by looking at your videos.. So informative and helpful!!! Is the volcano hike recommended with a 4 year old? The hike in the video didn't seem too long or anything.. Thanks for the information, you guys are amazing!!!
Thanks so much. We have more videos coming so stay tuned. We saw a lot of kids hiking, I don't know if we saw any kids that young though. Since we visited the volcano a lot has changed and the lava is coming out at a much faster rate now. The lava flow actually breached the steep part of the hike we took, so you can get a lot closer to the lava flow now, but not as close to the volcano. Be sure to check safetravels.is before your hike. They are really good at keeping up to date info on the hike and safety of the area.
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thanks a lot!! Just saw your video on west ring road and I continue to take notes!!!
Did you need to take a COVID test prior to returning back to the United States? If so, how much was it and was it in Reykjavik? I'm heading there in 2 weeks
Yes, at the time we returned home we did need a test. But thinks may change before now and the time we lost that video, so I would always recommend checking right before travel. We paid 7000 ISK for a test in Reykjavik, and we'll cover that in our 'leaving Iceland' video
Thanks for sharing this awesome trip with viewers! A quick question! When you guys return to the US, are you guys required to have a negative COVID-19 test result before getting on board a flight? Passengers who are fully vaccinated are exempted from that?
At this time, you need a negative Covid test to enter the US
@@TheAwkwardTourists Gotcha! Any idea where you guys will get tested for COVID-19 in Iceland before returning to the US? I wonder if there is a place in Reykjavik or near the airport where returning passengers to the US can get tested to have a negative COVID-19 test result…
@@byoungkeolchoi2840 we got tested in Reykjavik. You can make an appointment at travel.covid.is There's a place in Keflavik too but I don't know how to make an appointment
thank you for making this video!
Thank you for posting this I just bought my plane ticket. I’m a beginner photographer- wondering what length lense you used to get those shots from the top of the hill?
The close up shots were done with a 100-400mm lens
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you!!!
Going to iceland at the end of July! Your videos have definitely been helpful and informative! Did you pay for a guided tour for the volcano hike or was it free to visit?
It was free and easy, there were like a million other people to follow haha
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you so much! The car I rented said it won't be able to drive on the F roads. Do you think it would still be accessible for us to drive to the beginning of the hiking trail?
Hi, I would like to learn which route you followed (A B or C). Thanks for the amazing video!!
I think we hiked the A route, but I'm not sure about that. Since our visit, the lava has traveled much closer to the road and the lava field is much larger. I think the path that we took was cut off partially by the flow
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thanks a lot for the answer!!
Nice video!
Thanks for watching!
What an awesome video! Thank you for all the information! I am waiting in anticipation for each and every video that you post! So appreciated! One question, when I clicked on the link to see what type of drone you used it took me to Amazon but not to any particular product. I am researching Drones because we want to buy one before we go. Can you help me figure what Drone you used?
We actually bought a new drone in Iceland (more on that in our next video) DJI Air2s is the one we just purchased and it's awesome
Thank you! I am pretty techy the bf not so much. Do you talk about the converter/ adapter products you used in any of your videos? I am researching that also. Thank you again for your help and allowing us to see Iceland through your eyes!
Might I ask when you went to see the volcano?
We visited in Early May
I made it halfway up that volcano and quit and came back down and went to the Blue Lagoon for 5 hours...lol
It was definitely a hike, but worth it for us
Was there a fee to see the volcano? I'm going in June and want to see it also.
The volcano is no longer erupting, I'm afraid
Where you are going to get a Covid test before coming back to the US? Is it free? What app are they using for the results? We are flying at the end of July.
We will be making a video about that too, it will be out in a few more weeks. We tested at the testing site on Suðurlandsbraut in Reykjavik. It was $55 USD per person and we received an email with the results
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thank you. Also, I remember you mentioned that a shuttle was not there at the airport to get you to the rental car place. I know that they running every 15 min... what happened?
@@hughferguson9142 covid happened lol
We need to visit Iceland
There is so much to see in that country. Beautiful place
How far away from the volcano were you when sitting on the hill?
I would guess about a mile from the cone...maybe a half mile from the lava flow. If the wind blew in the right direction you could feel the heat....
Hi, can we see something else asides Iceland’s “nature” I am an international student coming over to Iceland in August and it’s sooo difficult to find a youtuber that explores Iceland’s daily life rather than their “nature”

This was a great and informative video, thanks so much. I'm going in August and am really concerned about the need to pee during a 6-8 hour trip. Do you have any recommendations?
There was a port o potty at the beginning of the trail head, but unfortunately that was the only toilet option when we were there
@@TheAwkwardTourists thanks for the info. Enjoy your travels.
Did you need to schedule a tour or you can just go whenever to the volcano? Also is there a fee to access it?
No fee, no tour... Just nature's show
Great thanks I will be going next week, so this is pretty helpful! Are there any other volcanoes you recommend?
Hi!! How long did it take to hike up & down? 😍
I’m going to Iceland in November and was wondering what hiking shoes you would reccomend?
In November you might encounter snow, so something that is waterproof and above the ankle for sure. Kelly is working on a blog post of all the gear that we used on our trip. Stay tuned!
Do you need to pay to get in or it’s free? We are going in 20 days! Wondering if we need to arrange a tour or just explore on our own
We did not take a tour. We hiked it on our own and it was free
I plan on doing this tour. Is this volcano quite active? Is there a good chance that I'll be able to see the lava there?
It just became active again after almost a year being dormant. Now is a great time to visit!
@@TheAwkwardTourists I plan on seeing it September 11th, this year. Hopefully I'll see some volcanic action.
would this trip be okay for someone with a fear of heights. mostly the hike to the volcano is what i am worried about.
The lava flow has completely changed over the last year, so it looks a lot different now, But I think you can still access some parts. I wouldn't worry about a fear of heights as long as you are ok hiking up some big hills you should be fine
Haha nice video but... are zombies humans?
Haha, Glad you caught that
What is the difficulty of this hike
I would call it moderate. It was about an hour to get to the site, and half of it was flat, the other half was pretty steep. But keep in mind, this was filmed in May 2021, and the volcano has been erupting since then, so the lava field is much much bigger now and the trail has changed course since the path we took in now under a lava flow
Hi! Do you have clothing recommendations/links to dress appropriately for the weather in Iceland?
Layers are key! The Weather can change at any moment so having extra layers is a really great way to be prepared. Also, be sure to pack some rain/ wind gear
did you have any issues with your drone and high winds? heat?
Yes, Mainly with the wind. landing was especially difficult as it kept getting blown around, not so many problems from the heat, but I made sure that I didn't get too close and didn't hover in one spot too long
Hey do we need to register certain time for pcr test before returning to US?? Or can we just select a date and go for screening at any time of that day??
When we went, we had to make an appointment for a certain time
@@TheAwkwardTourists Got it so we can do the test atleast 72 to 48 hours before rite??
what is the place called for the volcano?
The Fagradalsfjall volcano is on the Reykjanes peninsula. It is about 30km from Reykjavik
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thanks for your quick reply , much appreciated. I lost my driving license. Is there any bus service to go there? I am coming from UK tomorrow to Reykjavik
@@TheAwkwardTourists I took golden circle tour and asked them for discount by phone, lady gave me 10 % discount code, thanks for that, it costed 7190 isk, took another tour for northern light and saw northern light very beautiful
Hello, I would like to know the address of the starting point of the trail on Google Maps pls.
Unfortunately, this whole area has changed now due to lava flows, I don't think any of the places we went are accessible anymore
Just one more question guys~ how do you guys stay connected with friends and families in the US during your trip in Iceland? Did you have to buy a SIM card with a local phone service provider upon arrival at the airport? Or did you activate a global roaming service once arrived in Iceland? Thank you for the information in advance…
We used our global data plan for a few days but we also had a 4g wifi hub that we got with our camper rental. I'm sure you can buy a SIM card pretty easily
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you for the info! I just found out the huge duty free shop where you guys bought some alcohol beverages also sell some SIM cards as well. I will try to buy there when I arrive at the airport in Iceland. Thanks and have a safe travel!
Can we go there with a taxi ? If I can’t drive what are my others options please ?
The Volcano isn't erupting anymore, but if you want to see the lava flow, you can take a bus
Hi we are going to Iceland end of jul and are vaccinated Can you please let me know if you have to still get covid test from ny to Iceland and vice versa.
This is from travel.covid.is :
Travellers who present a valid certificate of full vaccination or previous infection:
Do not need to present a negative PCR-test upon arrival.
Do not need to undergo a screening test for COVID-19 at the border and are exempt from quarantine.
However, I believe you still need a negative covid test to return to the USA, even if you are vaccinated
How was the wind when u flew the drone???
Pretty bad to be honest. There was also a lot of air traffic and weak GPS signal, so definitely not the best conditions, but I had to do it. When do you get an opportunity like that? I figured even if the drone never came back it would be worth it.
@@TheAwkwardTourists hahahah glad ur drone came back
👍🏻
What trail did you guys use to go up?
I think we took the A route, but since we have been there, the lava flow took out one of the paths, so I'm not sure what it looks like now
