I'm a former professional, certified travel guide and have lived in Iceland for more than 40 yrs. This was a useful and well-done video, but what has confused Joel somewhat about camping prices is that Iceland, like most of Europe, uses a period instead of a comma to separate thousands. Although he gets the exchange rate correct into USD, when he says, "4 krona" it's really 4 thousand. Also, most self-serve fuel stops DO INDEED take credit cards, as long as your credit card has a PIN number. Many US banks will provide a PIN for credit cards, but remember to have this number in a safe place and don't forget it. Excellent point about Diesel pumps being black in color, NOT green!!!

@@freddieshermanpuff hello, my trip was epic and it is something I will never forget. I was vancamping but felt really safe along the way. My tip for you is pay attention to the weather alert. The only time I felt scared was when I did not pay attention to the blizzard alert in the NE part and kept driving anyways. It was my fault for not thinking more about it since I have no idea was blizzard conditions are really about. And in Iceland, its no joke. I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip. I will definitely go back.
Good video. Just got back from renting a camper van for a week. When I did the math you could rent a car and stay in AirBNBs for less than the camper van. If we were to ever go again I would do that instead of the camper van. However, I don't think we'll go back.
I think you are right. But the van gave us more flexibility and room to explore, and change our itinerary as needed. We got to see the volacano erupting, but would have had to skip it if we had to get somewhere for a reservation.

Very helpful video. Did you have any issues with the van return? in terms of scratches, gravel marks and so forth that are not covered in the basic insurence? The camptercan prices are not cheap and when you add the full waiver it gets very high...
Hi...we had no issues on the return. And just had basic insurance. A little risky, but the insurance add ons are sky high. Still, the van is not a cheap vacation or much cheaper than renting rooms, but way more fun.

Did you say you brought or bought the portable power station inverter thing? I have one I’ve used camping in the states but I believe the maximum battery you can fly with is 100 wh. Mine is 177 wh. Just wondering if you flew with yours or purchased it in Iceland. Thanks!!!

I am curious about a few things we are traveling there in September of this year and are curious about several things it looks like your trip was about 14 days which is what ours is as well. We are doing the Ring Road and veering off occasionally on different side roads to see different things but not visiting the western fjords this year. I see that you brought a blowup mattress I am curious why were you afraid that the bedding was not going to be comfortable enough. I to have a CPAP and saw that you brought a back up battery as opposed to using the battery in the camper. Did you find that was helpful or would you been all right without having to have brought it?
To answer your questions, we’ve use those air mattresses for backpacking and find them very comfortable. We already owned them and they don’t weigh much so we brought them along. We just wanted to be comfortable. We were glad we brought them. The battery in the van could not be used unless the van was running, I suspect about the case for most vans so I had to have that battery back up.
Regarding the CPAP - all/most camp-sites offer electricity hookup as an extra charge. Averages at about USD10 per day. If you have a humidifier the local tap-water is perfectly fine. Since you are traveling in September the electric hookup might be neccessary to run an electric heater overnight.

Could you please tell the cost for showering and using toilets at the campground?
Toilets come with the cost of the campground which is around $15 US pp. Showers run around $2-$3 mostly using coins.

What about ventilation inside the van? Sleeping and expiring, then the fumes when cooking with that stove. Is there any ventilation?
I don’t believe they had a fan in there. But we would open the door or open the window when we’re cooking.
